Narratives not only represent reality, but constitute reality by"accentuating, undermining or modifying aspects of the narrative(s) encoded in the source text or utterance"(Baker, 2006:5) in a way to intensify or weaken international political conflict, and in doing so participate in shaping social reality. The narrative account on translation raised up by Mona Baker"may constitute yet another turning point in translation studies"(Fan, 2009: 57), because she reveals that translation not only closely connects politics, but also creates politics(Baker, 2011:6). This provides a theoretical basis for us to discuss how translation shapes political speeches from the perspective of narration.Framing is what makes narratives takes into effective. The thesis will interpret translation of President Xi's diplomatic speeches from Baker's narrative account by the following framing means: labeling and repositioning of participants. It analyzes how President Xi's diplomatic speeches serves for enhancing consensus and reducing conflicts. It is hoped that the thesis will offer some suggestions on building a narrative system with Chinese characteristics and establishing more effective and skilled strategies for international communication.展开更多

Meanwhile, as an indispensable part of soft power, national image receives more and more attention on the political stage. Since Chinese President Xi Jinping’s speeches have unique features and greatly reflect positive national images of China, many scholars start to analyze them from diversified perspectives. Based on Du Bois’ theory of “the Stance Triangle” and the Indexicality Principle, taking President Xi Jinping’s speech at the opening ceremony of the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation for example, this paper expounds how President Xi achieves the evaluation, position, and alignment between the subject and object by means of overt labeling, implicature and presupposition, covert evaluation statement, and ideology-laden linguistic structure, in order to establish China’s national image. Through the analysis, the author intends to figure out how national leaders use various persuasive methods to achieve their political purpose. And the author hopes this thesis can provide a new perspective for further analysis on national leaders’ speeches.展开更多

Genre analysis is a recent trend in discourse analysis. It combines socio-cultural and psycholinguistic aspect of text construction and interpretation. This analysis aims to show what extent surface linguistic forms align with given standardized communicative events. To construct a text, a speaker should master its schematic structure. The schematic structure consists of organizing the rhetoric. It covers the macro-stages which can be classified into introductory stage, body stage, and concluding stage. The rhetorical organization/structure (micro moves) of a speech genre includes "opening marker", "gambit", "narration", and "marker" in the introductory stage; "claim", "confutation", "confirmation", and "concession" in the body stage; "marker", "appeal/recommendation", and a closing in the body stage. By studying the schematic structure, it can be recognized how the students construct the genre, whether they follow the linear pattern offered or their construction of speech is influenced by their native cultural way of thinking. In sequencing the micro moves, the students followed the sequence offered in the framework of speech genre. Although there was a slight difference in sequencing the moves, in general the students have conformed to the proposed sequence. The variety of sequencing the moves was prompted by the native language and cultural background (Javanese and Chinese). Since rhetorical organization varies from culture to culotte, it can be tolerated that the students have a variety in sequencing the moves.展开更多

It is obvious that the speech to actuate should be more inspired and motive than the speech to convince. So the language of the speech to actuate should have some special features. Personal pronoun is one of the basic elements of language. It is widely used in our daily speaking, and for a speaker, it is also an effective way to control the emotion of listeners. Different personal pronouns have different effects in a speech, and this thesis has analyzed the effects of personal pronouns in the speech to actuate respectively with the examples of “I Have a Dream” made by Martin Luther King and “My Education, My Future” made by Barack Hussein Obama Jr., the president of America. From the analysis, we can see the concrete role every pronoun played in the speeches of different styles, and how it impacts the success of a speech. Such an analysis and probe leads to a better understanding on the art of English speaking, which can help the learners of English make these skills in their charge.展开更多

Firstly the Wrapped Discrete Fourier Transform (WDFT) is used to decompose the harmonic spectra of the mixed speeches. Then the individual speech is reconstructed by using the sinusoidal speech model. By taking advantage of the non-uniform frequency resolution of WDFT, harmonic spectra parameters can be estimated and separated accurately. Experimental results on mixed vowels separation show that the proposed method can recover the original speeches effectively.展开更多
