BACKGROUND Traditional paper-based preoperative patient education is a struggle for new nurses and requires extensive training. In this situation, virtual reality technology can help the new nurses.Despite its potential benefits, there are studies on patient satisfaction but there is limited information on the usability of virtual reality(VR)technology for new nurses in giving preoperative education to patients.AIM To investigate the impact on satisfaction, usability, and burnout of a system using VR technology in preoperative patient education.METHODS The study involved 20 nurses from the plastic surgery ward and 80 patients admitted between April and May 2019.Each nurse taught four patients:Two using traditional verbal education and two using virtual reality. The System Usability Scale,After-Scenario Questionnaire, and Maslach Burnout Inventory(MBI)were employed to evaluate the impact of these education methods.RESULTS The VR education groups showed a statistically higher satisfaction than the traditional verbal education groups.Among the three subscales of the MBI,emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment improved statistically significantly.VR was also better in terms of usability.CONCLUSION This study suggests VR enhances usability and reduces burnout in nurses, but further research is needed to assess its impact on depersonalization and objective measures like stress and heart rate. 展开更多

The study maintained that healthcare organizations lag behind in the race to address burnout because they focus more on dealing with the already-existing burnout other than focusing on the source. Aims: To assess burnout, resilience and its association to safety culture in nurses working in mental health institutions with psychiatric patients in Jazan, Saudi Arabia. Method: The study design was a cross sectional survey using convenience sampling, and 119 participants from Al-Amal and psychiatric hospital in Jazan in the period between June and August 2018. A self-administered questionnaire was used to assess burnout, resilience and its association to safety culture. Results: A large percentage of nurses feel that the appropriate information about performance is not presented to them. They feel that they are deprived of a great working day and environment and plan to leave their current workplaces to get better opportunities where their career opportunities are more appreciated. Findings: A significant percentage of nurses feel that appropriate feedback about performance is not offered to them. They feel their careers are unappreciated and are burned out on a typical workday and plan to leave their current workplaces for better opportunities. Conclusion: This study supported the adoption of healthcare mechanisms to address the source of nurse’s burnout than addressing this issue when it emerges. The focus on the source can prove effective in building resilience and supporting safety culture. 展开更多

Precursors of burnout such as time pressure need further study for better understanding. In Jordan literature, studies regarding time pressure and burnout among Jordanian nurses are scarce. This study aimed to 1) evaluate the relationship between time pressure and burnout, and 2) identify participants’ characteristics that may have relationship with time pressure and burnout. A descriptive correlational design was utilized using a self-reported cross-sectional survey to collect data from 175 Jordanian nurses. Participants reported high level of time pressure (24.8 out of 126) and burnout (72.9 out of 126). Time pressure was correlated with emotional exhaustion and depersonalization (r = 0.561, 0.491, P < 0.01, respectively). Burnout was highest on the emotional exhaustion (72%) compared to 53.9% for depersonalization and 49.2% for personal achievement. Depersonalization showed the most frequent correlation with participants’ characteristics. Burnout was found to be common among Jordanian nurses, and time pressure is a precursor of this phenomenon, giving rise to the consequences on both patients’ and nurses’ health. Healthcare administrators have to modify the nursing work environment to be less stressful and more appealing to overcome the causes of nurses’ burnout. 展开更多

Background: Burnout is a mental condition defined as a result of continuous and long-term stress exposure, particularly related to psychosocial factors at work. This paper aims to examine the psychometric properties of the Maslach Burnout Questionnaire (MBI-HSS) for validation of use in Lebanon, and to describe burnout and associated factors amongst nurses in Lebanon especially the gender and employment sector. Methods: The psychometric properties of the Arabic version of MBI-HSS were studied amongst a sample of 200 nurses. In this descriptive study, survey data were collected from private and public hospitals. The data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis. Results: The results indicated satisfactory reliability through internal consistency for all three scales of the MBI-HSS. The factor analysis was quite satisfactory. Most of staff had scores which indicated they were burnt out. Nearly three quarters (77.5%) reported emotional exhaustion, 36.0% reported depersonalization while almost one third (33.0%) experienced reduced personal accomplishment. Burnout increases for 30-39 years age groups. Married nurses had significantly higher emotional exhaustion. Depersonalization was highest among nurses in private sector, and personal accomplishment was highest among nurses in public sector. Depersonalization proved to be higher in night and rotating shift nurses. Depression, backache, and headache were predictors of burnout. Conclusion: Findings indicate that the main psychometric properties of reliability and validity of the Arabic version of MBI-HSS appear to be satisfactory. Burnout is particularly prominent and severe in the nurses working population. The implications of these findings for interventions that reduce burnout and promote nursing mental health are therefore in the interest of employers, governments and policy makers. 展开更多

The recent global economic recession has affected nursing working conditions in terms of salary reductions, increased workload and staff shortages. Poor nursing working conditions are associated with higher levels of burnout. However in Greece this association has not yet been studied. The aim of this study was to explore financial crisis related changes in nurses’ working conditions and their associations with burnout. A cross-sectional quantitative survey was conducted and data were collected through self-reported questionnaires from 299 Greek nurses from two Public Hospitals in 2012. Multiple linear regression analyses were used in order to find independent factors associated with burnout. The results showed that Greek nurses had high levels of burnout. Satisfaction from the job, quality of care and feeling equivalent with other professionals were independent predictors of lower emotional exhaustion. Workload increase and willingness to change career and work department were independent predictors of higher emotional exhaustion. Job satisfaction and satisfaction from care quality were independent predictors of lower depersonalization. Changes in working relationships and willingness to change career were independent predictors of higher depersonalization. Higher personal accomplishments were independently associated with more years in nursing, satisfaction from the salary prior to reductions, better quality of care, feeling suitable for the job and being anxious about future career. Influence on nurse efficiency by income reduction was an independent predictor of lower personal accomplishments. In conclusion, Greek nurses were suffering from high levels of burnout which was independently associated with crisis related working conditions. Interventions are needed in order to reduce the burden of burnout among Greek nurses. 展开更多

Objective:This paper aims to clarify the concept of occupational burnout(OB)as well as develop appropriate methods to relieve or prevent OB in the nursing profession. Methods:Walker and Avant's eight-step approach of concept analysis was applied. Results:OB was defined as a chronic form of work-related stress.Accurately,it was characterized by emotional exhaustion,depersonalization/cynicism,and reduced personal accomplishment/inefficacy.Antecedents of burnout included(a)demographic characteristics;(b)chronic exposure to work-related stressors;(c)quantitative and qualitative job demands;(d)lack of job resources;and(e)personality traits.Consequences involved(a)individual’s unfavorable quality of life;(b)negative impact on the organization;and(c)poor services quality.Although the Maslach Burnout Inventory(MBI)is perceived as an ideal tool to measure burnout and hence,it is used worldwide, whether this instrument fits to measure this concept for nurses has still not yet been verified and thus further research is needed. Conclusions:By proposing a comprehensive definition of the concept, this analysis contributes to recognition of the process of OB of nurses. All nurses are vulnerable to OB.Hence, burnout in nursing needs to be recognized as a critical factor in the delivery of safe patient care.It proposes that the prevention of OB would be achieved through team communication training, mindfulness group, education, etc. 展开更多

In recent years, significant focus has been placed on resilience, with ongoing studies aiming to identify strategies for reducing the negative effects of job stress and protecting nurses from negative psychosocial outcomes.Nevertheless,as far as this topic is concerned,no research has yet been conducted in the context of Saudi psychiatric nurses. The aim of this research, therefore,is to determine how Saudi Arabian psychiatric nurses’professional quality of life and psychological resilience relate to one another. To this aim,a cross-sectional study has been performed in Saudi Arabia incorporating a population of 167(a 66.4%response rate)mental health nurses taken from the largest psychiatric hospital in the capital city Riyadh.Data collection was performed using the popular Arabic version of the Connor–Davidson Resilience and the Arabic version of the Professional Quality of Life Scales. To assess the variables related to both Professional Quality of Life and psychological resilience levels, statistical analyses such as Pearson correlation,ANOVA,t-tests,and linear regression were utilized. The findings show compassion satisfaction and burnout to have a moderate inverse relationship(r=−0.502),while compassion satisfaction(CS)and resilience have a moderate positive correlation(r=0.594).Compared to their morning-shift counterparts, nurses working night shifts reported higher mean scores for resilience(72.70),CS(40.20),burnout(24.52),and compassion fatigue(CF)(28.11).Participants with less than five years’experience in a psychiatric clinic had the highest mean resilience score(72.96).Finally,a positive relationship between resilience and compassion satisfaction(CS)was revealed using linear regression analysis(β=0.536,t=7.080,p=0.000).The study reveals significant differences in the scores assigned to resilience and work-life quality based on educational qualifications,shift-work type, and experiences.Burnout and compassion satisfaction(CS)are found to be significantly correlated,as are compassion satisfaction(CS)and resilience, and burnout and compassion fatigue(CF). 展开更多

Objective: The associations between social support and burnout were explored in ICU nurses of Shanghai. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study of 356 ICU nurses by applying random cluster sampling. Data were collected using self-reported questionnaires under the instruction of trained investigators. Data on emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and feelings of low personal accomplishment etc. were collected, calculated and analyzed. Results: The participants had a mean age of 26.96 years (SD 4.07). The mean value (M) and stand- ard deviation (SD) of emotional exhaustion was M=31.85, SD=8.38, those of depersonalisation was M= 11.69, SD= 5.54 and those of feelings of low personal accomplishment was M= 19. 79, SD = 7.02. The high degree of emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalisation (DP), and lack of personal accomplishment (PA) were revealed to be 76.4%, 39.6%, and 94.9%, respectively. The major influencing factors of emotional exhaustion included support from co-workers(b=0. 343, t = 1.98, P=0. 049), taking leave(b=-1. 182, t=-3. 747, P=0. 001), requisition of work(b=-l. 41, t=-2. 369, P=0. 018), and supervisor support(b=-0. 524, t=-3. 926, P=0. 001). The major influencing factors of depersonalisation were support from the supervisor(b=-0. 333, t=-4. 146, P=0.001), age(b=-0. 89, t=-2. 272, P= 0. 024) and requisition of work(b=-0. 148, t=-2. 124, P=0. 034). There was a positive co-relationship between personal accomplishment and supervisor support. Conclusions: Supervisor support, age, and requisition of work were the major influencing factors of depersonalisation. In addition, supervisor support plays an important role in low personal accomplishment. Further research should focus on supervisor support, co-worker support, time on leave, and requisition of work associated with emotional exhaustion. 展开更多

Objectives To develop a more specific understanding of psychological mechanisms in the development of burnout in long-term care as a basis for potential new intervention strategies aiming at improving nurses’mental health. Methods Two qualitative studies with thematic analysis were conducted. In Study 1,we conducted eight group interviews with 110 nurses from May–July 2019 in the context of workshops at eight nursing homes in Germany. In Study 2,we supplemented these with semi-structured interviews with 14 executives at German nursing homes in December 2019.Results The thematic analysis in Study 1 identified three main themes:causes of challenges, employees’opportunities for change, and organisational opportunities for change.Thematic analysis in Study 2 identified three main themes:job motives, reasons for filling in for others, and employee self-care.Further,our results show that the need to stand in for colleagues,in particular,is one of the greatest challenges for geriatric caregivers. In dealing with these challenges we found that self-endangering behaviour—a diminished ability to say no when asked to fill in or to do work overtime—was an important antecedent of nurses’burnout.Further, high levels of altruistic motivation and identification with the team or organisation were associated with self-endangering behaviour in the presence of adverse working conditions.Low levels of self-worth are a further risk factor for self-endangering.Conclusions Our findings are at odds with some core tenets of classic models of job demands and burnout that construe motivation and identification as resources. Our results show the need of a holistic intervention program in nursing including individual coaching,team-based interventions and organisational development processes.Employees themselves should be sensitized to this issue and supported in the long term, and politicians should create structures that do not encourage this behaviour any further. 展开更多

It is the subject of many works in Morocco and in the world. Our work focuses on the study of stress resistance among nurses and physicians working in services at Ibn Sina Hospital in Rabat, Morocco. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between resistance status, burnout and level of psychological distress. A self-questionnaire is provided to all respondents. It includes questions about socio-demographic and professional, clinical, also neuropsychological tests such as the stress resistance test (CTRS), the burnout scale (MBI) and the general health questionnaire (GHQ12). This study shows that 42% of nurses and physicians have a high level of emotional exhaustion, high level of depersonalization affects 49% of nurses and physicians and subjects with low professional achievement account for 67% and 54% of nurses and physicians suffer from psychological distress. The stress test reveals that 88% of subjects have a low or moderate level of stress resistance and only 12% have good resistance. Thus, our study sheds new light on the understanding of stress at work by using new measurement and evaluation methods such as TRS, with the aim of reducing or eliminating the impact of occupational stress in hospitals. 展开更多

The migration of healthcare professionals, including nurses,is a global phenomenon. It is driven by various factors, including the pursuit of better opportunities, living conditions, and professional development,as well as political instability or conflict in their home countries. The World Health Organization(WHO)has noted that high-income countries often rely on foreign-trained nurses to fill gaps in their healthcare systems[1].For instance,as of 2021,over 40%(52 million)of all nurses in the United States(US)were expatriates[2].In the United Kingdom(UK),the percentage of expatriate nurses was even higher, reaching approximately 18%in 2021[3].Owing to globalization and migration, healthcare providers must possess cultural competence to deliver improved care[4,5].Culturally responsive teaching(CRT)is rooted in the idea that culture plays a vital role in shaping people’s behaviors, beliefs, values, and communication styles[6].Furthermore,these cultural factors influence patients’perspectives on health, illness, healing, and their preferences for care and communication[7].By recognizing and embracing these cultural differences, nurses can provide more effective and compassionate care to their diverse patient population[8]. 展开更多

Introduction: Pakistan has a large number of professional nurses but a higher rate of turnover contributes towards the shortage of nurses which is intensified by nurses’ immigration, lack of recruitment of new nurses and retirement of senior nurses. Aim: The study aimed at examining the factors that increase retention of nurses. Research Method: The study is descriptive cross sectional with a sample of 150 nurses including both the genders, from 3 private hospitals located in Pakistan. A convenient sampling technique was used. The data collection was done through close ended questionnaires based on 20 questions. Data collection was done quantitatively and then data was entered in SPSS. Correlation and regression tests were performed. Findings: The analysis revealed that 91.3% nurses are loyal to their hospitals but, 8.7%nurses can switch the hospital for different reasons. It was also found that the idea of leaving the job based on the intention of moving to abroad and public sector was higher than the retirement and other causes. Resultantly, enhancements in nurses’ work environments have the ability to decrease nurses’ job burnout and turnover and increase patients’ satisfaction. Recommendations: Hospital leaders should implement effective strategies to encourage nurses to continue their job by motivation, strengthening management skills within the hospital and improving a positive work environment by promoting teamwork, continuous learning, trust, respect and flexible arrangements which can lead towards achieving better results. However, further studies quantitatively and qualitatively can explore more factors related to dissatisfaction of nurses. Health systems policy makers should lead by developing related strategies for the retention of nurses. 展开更多

Background: Nursing records play an important role in multidisciplinary collaborations in delirium care. This study aims to develop a self-rated nursing record frequency scale for delirium care among nurses in acute care hospitals (NRDC-Acute). Methods: A draft of the scale was developed after a literature review and meeting with researchers with experience in delirium care, and a master’s or doctoral degree in nursing. We identified 25 items on a 5-point Likert scale. Subsequently, an anonymous self-administered questionnaire survey was administered to 520 nurses from 41 acute care hospitals in Japan, and the reliability and validity of the scale were examined. Results: There were 232 (44.6%) respondents and 218 (41.9%) valid responses. The mean duration of clinical experience was 15.2 years (SD = 8.8). Exploratory factor analysis extracted 4 factors and 13 items for this scale. The model fit indices were GFI = 0.991, AGFI = 0.986, and SRMR = 0.046. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for the entire scale was .888. The four factors were named “Record of Pharmacological Delirium Care on Pro Re Nata (PRN)”, “Record of Non-Pharmacological Delirium Care”, “Record of Pharmacological Delirium Care on Regular Medication”, and “Record of Collaboration for Delirium Care”. Conclusion: The scale was relatively reliable and valid. Nurses in acute care hospitals can use this scale to identify and address issues related to the documentation of nursing records for delirium care. 展开更多
