However, little research has been done on why these athletes do not meet their daily needs. The aim was to research the barriers and motivators of young Dutch elite athletes to optimize their nutritional intake. Quantitative and qualitative research was conducted among 8 handball and 4 volleyball players at the Dutch National Sports Center (17.2 ± 0.8 years). First, the nutritional intake was tracked through food diaries and analyzed in Nutritics. Thereupon, five semi-structured interviews based on the COM-B model were carried out. The interviews were transcribed and coded. The athletes had a reduced intake of energy, carbohydrates, vitamins A, C, E, D, calcium, potassium, zinc, and iron compared to their requirements. Seven themes for optimizing their nutritional intake emerged in the interviews: needs assessment, practical translation, portion size, lack of time, involvement, individuality, and food distribution. Barriers that the athletes experienced were that they did not know what their total daily nutritional needs were and how this translates into practice. In addition, the portion size at dinner was too small. They also had little time to eat a full meal due to time pressure from training and school. On the other hand, motivators were receiving meal options to translate their needs into practice with a distribution of moments when they need to eat. Covering these topics in nutritional workshops where athletes actively participate with more individual focus, could contribute to the optimization of their nutritional intake. 展开更多

Pancreatic cancer is usually associated with a poor prognosis.Surgery is the main curative treatment but pancreatic operations are aggressive and new tools that help clinicians to predict surgical and prognostic outcomes are necessary.Lu et al recently published a retrospective, single centre cohort study evaluating the impact of seven nutritional and inflammatory markers in pancreatic cancer surgical patients:The albumin-to-globulin ratio, prognostic nutritional index(PNI),systemic immune-inflammation index(SII),neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio(NLR),platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio(PLR),nutritional risk index, and the geriatric nutritional risk index.A significant correlation was found between the PNI,SII,NLR,and PLR and a hospital discharge of less than 15 days.In a univariable analysis,PNI,SII,NLR and PLR were significantly related to recurrence-free survival and,in a multivariable analysis PNI was associated with overall survival.Various meta-analyses corroborate the results in terms of prognosis but individual studies are discordant on their usefulness.Besides, the cut-off values for these markers vary significantly between studies and there are no clinical trials comparing them to identify the most relevant ones. These are limitations when implementing nutritional and inflammatory biomarkers into clinical practice and further studies are needed in order to answer these questions. 展开更多

AIM: To investigate the influences of enteral, parenteral nutrition and probiotics delivered by gut on intestinal microecology, epithelial tight junctions, immune and barrier function of rats with abdominal infection. METHODS: Rat abdominal infection models established with cecal ligation and perforation method, were divided into three groups: parenteral nutrition (PN group, n = 7), PN+enteral nutrition (EN group, n = 7) and PN + EN + probiotics (probiotics group, n = 7) via the needle jejunostomy and neck vein for five days. The total nutritional supplement of the three groups was isonitrogenic and isocaloric. Probiotics was delivered by jejunostomy 10 mL/d (1 x 10^8 cfu/mL). The rats were killed on the sixth day. The feces in the cecum were cultured for anaerobic bacterial growth and analyzed with bacterial group DNA fingerprint profile with random amplified polymorphic DNA. The transmembrane binding proteins (occludin) and IgA level in plasma cells of intestine epithelium in colon and terminal ileum were measured by an immunohistochemistry method. The ultrastructure of intestinal epithelial tight junctions in colon and small intestine was observed by electronmicroscopy. Vena cava blood and the homogenated tissue of liver, lung and mesenteric lymph nodes were cultured to determine the bacterial translocations, and endotoxin in the blood from portal vein was detected. RESULTS: (1) The amount of bacteria of gut species in EN group and probiotic group was higher than that in PN group. The DNA-proflles in EN group and probiotic group were similar to that of normal rats. The number of DNAprofiles in probiotics group was much more than that in PN group and EN group. Moreover, there were strange stripes in PN group. (2) The expression of occludin and IgA in the small and large intestine in EN group (2.309 ± 0.336, 15.440 ± 2.383) and probiotic group (2.938 ± 0.515, 16.230 ± 3.183) was improved as compared with PN group (1.207 ± 0.587, P 〈 0.05, 11.189 ± 2.108, P 〈 0.01). The expression of occludin in probiotic group (intestine: 2.93 ± 0.515; cecum: 3.40 ± 0.617) was higher than that in EN group (intestine: 2.309 ± 0.336; cecum: 2.076 ± 0.670; P 〈 0.05). The expression of IgA, especially in EN group (intestine: 15.440 ± 2.383) and probiotic EN group (large intestine: 12.516 ± 1.542) significantly increased as compared with PN group (intestine: 11.189 ± 2.108; cecum: 10.160 ± 1.643; P 〈 0.01). The intestinal epithelial tight junctions and microvilli of the probiotic group were more intact than those in the PN group. (3) The bacterial translocations in blood, liver, lung and mesenteric lymph nodes, and the levels of endotoxin were significantly reduced in probiotic (0.082 ± 0.029) and EN (0.125 ± 0.040) groups as compared with PN group (0.403 ± 0.181, P 〈 0.05). CONCLUSION: Application of EN combined with probiotics could improve the expression of transmembrane binding proteins (occludin) and IgA, correct the intestinal flora disturbance, maintain gut barrier functions and tight junctions, and reduce the occurrence of gut bacterial translocation. 展开更多

Objective: To evaluate the effect of early intrajejunalnutrition in attenuating bacterial and/or endotoxintranslocation and improving gut barrier function ofsevere acute pancreatitis (SAP) in dogs. Methods: 15 dogs were divided into parenteral nutrition(PN) group(7 dogs)and early intrajejunal nutrition(EIN) group(8). EIN was delivered nutrients via a nee-dle jejunostomy catheter feeding at 48h after operation.SAP model was induced by injecting 1 ml/kg of com-bined solution of 5% sodium taurocholate and 8000-10000 BAEE units trypsin/ml into the pancreas via thepancreatic duct. Systemic blood samples were ob-tained before and 1, 3, 5, 7 d following SAP, and culturedby aerobic as well as anaerobic bacterial growth. Systemicplasma and portal vein endotoxin levels were quantifiedby the chromogenic limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL)technique. Portal vein blood and specimens of tissuefrom the mesenteriolum and mesocolon lymph nodes, lung, pulmonary portal lymph nodes, pancreatitis tissueand periopancreas tissue were adopted before the experi-ment was finished. Aliquots of the homogenata were cul-tured as blood mentioned above to determine the magnitudeof the bacteria DNA, protein and the villi, the thickness ofmucosa, and the whole bowel wall of the ileum and trans-verse colon were measured. Results: The study showed that the levels of systemicplasma endotoxin and the magnitude of bacterialtranslocation to the portal and systemic blood and dis-tant organ were reduced significantly in the EINgroup as compared with the TPN group. The contentsof protein and DNA, the height of villi, the thicknessof mucosa and whole bowel wall of the ileum andtransverse colon in the EIN group were higher thanthose in the PN group. Conclusion: Our results suggested that EIN is safe andeffective to be adopted by intrajejunal delivery of nu-trients in SAP, decreases the occurrence of gut bacterialtranslocation, and improves the gut barrier function. 展开更多

While some reports show that physical characteristics of the baru fruits (Dipteryx alata Vog.) differ within and among the Brazilian Savanna regions, a study shows that there are differences in the nutritional composition of baru almonds from different trees from the same Savanna area. It is unknown, however, whether the Savanna’s region influences the nutritional quality of this native almond. Thus, we evaluated the influence of East, Southeast and West regions of the Brazilian Savanna on physical characteristics, nutrient composition and protein quality of the baru almond. Chemical composition and amino acid profile were analyzed, and Amino Acid Score (AAS), Net Protein Ratio (NPR), and Protein Digestibility–Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS) were estimated. The physical characteristics significantly differed within but not among regions. The protein (310 g kg-1), lipid (410 g·kg-1), fiber (120 g·kg-1) and calcium (1,300 mg·kg-1) contents of baru almonds were high, with significant differences among regions for insoluble fiber content (94.3 - 128.3 g·kg-1) and amino acid profile (AAS = 77% - 89%). The relative NPR (RNPR) values were similar among regions (mean value of RNPR = 71%), and the PDCAAS values ranged from 65 to 73%. The region of the Brazilian Savanna influences the fiber and amino acid profiles, but not the total content of nutrients, the protein quality and the physical characteristics of the native baru almonds. The baru almond is a potential food as source of complementary protein for healthy diets and as a nutritious raw material for various food systems. 展开更多

This comprehensive review explores the intricate relationship between nutrition, the gut microbiome, steroid hormones, and Parkinson's disease within the context of the gut-brain axis. The gut-brain axis plays a pivotal role in neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's disease, encompassing diverse components such as the gut microbiota, immune system, metabolism, and neural pathways. The gut microbiome, profoundly influenced by dietary factors, emerges as a key player.Nutrition during the first 1000 days of life shapes the gut microbiota composition, influencing immune responses and impacting both child development and adult health.High-fat,high-sugar diets can disrupt this delicate balance, contributing to inflammation and immune dysfunction.Exploring nutritional strategies, the Mediterranean diet's anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties show promise in reducing Parkinson's disease risk.Microbiome-targeted dietary approaches and the ketogenic diet hold the potential in improving brain disorders.Beyond nutrition, emerging research uncovers potential interactions between steroid hormones, nutrition, and Parkinson's disease.Progesterone, with its anti-inflammatory properties and presence in the nervous system, offers a novel option for Parkinson's disease therapy. Its ability to enhance neuroprotection within the enteric nervous system presents exciting prospects. The review addresses the hypothesis thatα-synuclein aggregates originate from the gut and may enter the brain via the vagus nerve.Gastrointestinal symptoms preceding motor symptoms support this hypothesis.Dysfunctional gut-brain signaling during gut dysbiosis contributes to inflammation and neurotransmitter imbalances, emphasizing the potential of microbiota-based interventions. In summary, this review uncovers the complex web of interactions between nutrition, the gut microbiome, steroid hormones, and Parkinson's disease within the gut-brain axis framework.Understanding these connections not only offers novel therapeutic insights but also illuminates the origins of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease. 展开更多

The Rural Minimum Living Standard Guarantee(Rural Dibao)is an important unconditional cash transfer program to alleviate poverty in rural China.Despite the importance of children’s nutrition in breaking poverty cycles, little is known about the impact of Rural Dibao on child nutrition outcomes.Using China Family Panel Studies(CFPS),this paper examines the effects of Rural Dibao on child nutrition outcomes and investigates potential pathways and heterogeneous effects. We exploit propensity score matching and difference-in-differences techniques to evaluate the effects of the Rural Dibao program on child nutrition outcomes. Our results suggest that Rural Dibao significantly impacts the nutrition outcomes of children up to 15 years of age.Specifically, our results suggest that Rural Dibao improves child height-to-age z-scores by 1.05 standard deviations and lowers the probability of stunting by 11.9 percentage points.Additional analyses suggest that increased protein intake is the main pathway through which Rural Dibao participation contributes to better nutrition outcomes. We also find that the effect of the program is more pronounced among girls, children who are non-left-behind or live with highly educated mothers, and those from low-income families and poor areas. Our findings suggest that Rural Dibao participation helps improve child nutrition outcomes through improving diet quality. 展开更多

This paper examines the nutrition impacts of using non-solid cooking fuel on under-five children in developing countries. We draw on data from more than 1.12 million children in 62 developing countries from the Demographic and Health Surveys(DHS).Results from both fixed effects(FE)and instrumental variable(IV)estimates show that using non-solid cooking fuel significantly improves the nutrition outcomes of under-five children.Compared with their peers from households mainly using solid fuel, children from households mainly using non-solid fuel exhibit a lower probability of experiencing stunting(by 5.9 percentage points)and being underweight(by 1.2 percentage points). Our further investigation provides evidence for several underlying mechanisms, such as improved indoor air quality, induced reduction in children’s respiratory symptoms, benefits on maternal health, and reduction in maternal time spent on fuel collection or cooking.Heterogenous analyses suggest that the nutrition benefits of using non-solid cooking fuel are more prominent among boys, children above three years old,and those from households of lower socioeconomic status, rural areas, and Southeast Asia. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Systemic inflammation and nutrition play pivotal roles in cancer progression and can increase the risk of delayed recovery after surgical procedures.AIM To assess the significance of inflammatory and nutritional indicators for the prognosis and postoperative recovery of patients with pancreatic cancer(PC).METHODS Patients who were diagnosed with PC and underwent surgical resection at our hospital between January 1,2019,and July 31,2023,were enrolled in this retrospective observational cohort study. All the data were collected from the electronic medical record system.Seven biomarkers-the albumin-to-globulin ratio, prognostic nutritional index(PNI),systemic immune–inflammation index(SII),neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio(NLR),platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio(PLR),nutritional risk index(NRI),and geriatric NRI were assessed.RESULTS A total of 446 patients with PC met the inclusion criteria and were subsequently enrolled.Patients with early postoperative discharge tended to have higher PNI values and lower SII,NLR,and PLR values(all P<0.05).Through multivariable logistic regression analysis, the SII value emerged as an independent risk factor influencing early recovery after surgery.Additionally, both univariable and multivariable Cox regression analyses revealed that the PNI value was the strongest prognostic marker for overall survival(OS;P=0.028)and recurrence-free survival(RFS;P<0.001).The optimal cutoff PNI value was established at 47.30 using X-tile software.Patients in the PNI-high group had longer OS(P<0.001)and RFS(P=0.0028)times than those in the PNI-low group.CONCLUSION Preoperative systemic inflammatory-nutritional biomarkers may be capable of predicting short-term recovery after surgery as well as long-term patient outcomes. 展开更多

Cirrhosis is considered a growing cause of morbidity and mortality, which represents a significant public health problem.Currently, there is no effective treatment to reverse cirrhosis.Treatment primarily centers on addressing the underlying liver condition, monitoring, and managing portal hypertension-related complications, and evaluating the potential for liver transplantation in cases of decompensated cirrhosis, marked by rapid progression and the emer-gence of complications like variceal bleeding, hepatic encephalopathy, ascites, malnutrition, and more.Malnutrition,a prevalent complication across all disease stages,is often underdiagnosed in cirrhosis due to the complexities of nutritional assessment in patients with fluid retention and/or obesity, despite its crucial impact on prognosis.Increasing emphasis has been placed on the collaboration of nutritionists within hepatology and Liver transplant teams to deliver compre-hensive care,a practice that has shown to improve outcomes. This review covers appropriate screening and assessment methods for evaluating the nutritional status of this population, diagnostic approaches for malnutrition, and context-specific nutrition treatments. It also discusses evidence-based recommendations for supplementation and physical exercise, both essential elements of the standard care provided to cirrhotic patients. 展开更多

Yellow mealworm larvae(YML;Tenebrio molitor) are considered as a valuable insect species for animal feed due to their high nutritional values and ability to grow under different substrates and rearing conditions. Advances in the understanding of entomophagy and animal nutrition over the past decades have propelled research areas toward testing multiple aspects of YML to exploit them better as animal feed sources. This review aims to summarize various approaches that could be exploited to maximize the nutritional values of YML as an animal feed ingredient. In addition, YML has the potential to be used as an antimicrobial or bioactive agent to improve animal health and immune function in production animals. The dynamics of the nutritional profile of YML can be influenced by multiple factors and should be taken into account when attempting to optimize the nutrient contents of YML as an animal feed ingredient. Specifically, the use of novel land-based and aquatic feeding resources, probiotics, and the exploitation of larval gut microbiomes as novel strategies can assist to maximize the nutritional potential of YML. Selection of relevant feed supplies, optimization of ambient conditions, the introduction of novel genetic selection procedures, and implementation of effective post-harvest processing may be required in the future to commercialize mealworm production. Furthermore, the use of appropriate agricultural practices and technological improvements within the mealworm production sector should be aimed at achieving both economic and environmental sustainability. The issues highlighted in this review could pave the way for future approaches to improve the nutritional value of YML. 展开更多

Pearl millet(Pennisetum glaucum)is one of the major millets with high nutritional properties. This crop exhibits exceptional resilience to drought and high temperatures. However, the processing of pearl millet poses a significant challenge due to its high lipid content, enzyme activity, and presence of antinutrients.Consequently,it becomes imperative to enhance the quality and prolong the shelf life of pearl millet flour by employing suitable technologies.Hydrothermal treatment in the food industry has long been seen as promising due to its potential to reduce microbial load, inactivate enzymes, and improve nutrient retention. This study aims to investigate the effects of hydrothermal treatment on the quality characteristics of pearl millet. The independent variables of the study were soaking temperature(35,45,55℃),soaking time(2,3,4 h),and steaming time(5,10,15 min).Treatment conditions had a statistically significant effect on nutrient retention.Major antinutrients like tannins and phytates were reduced by 0.99% to 5.94% and 0.36% to 6.00%,respectively,after the treatment.Lipase activity decreased significantly up to 10% with the treatment conditions. The findings of this study could potentially encourage the use of pearl millet flour in the production of various food items and promote the application of hydrothermal treatment in the field of food processing. 展开更多

BACKGROUND The controlling nutritional status(CONUT)score effectively reflects a patient’s nutritional status, which is closely related to cancer prognosis. This study invest-igated the relationship between the CONUT score and prognosis after radical surgery for colorectal cancer, and compared the predictive ability of the CONUT score with other indexes.AIM To analyze the predictive performance of the CONUT score for the survival rate of colorectal cancer patients who underwent potentially curative resection.METHODS This retrospective analysis included 217 patients with newly diagnosed colorectal. The CONUT score was calculated based on the serum albumin level, total lymphocyte count, and total cholesterol level. The cutoff value of the CONUT score for predicting prognosis was 4 according to the Youden Index by the receiver operating characteristic curve. The associations between the CONUT score and the prognosis were performed using Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression analysis.RESULTS Using the cutoff value of the CONUT score, patients were stratified into CONUT low(n=189)and CONUT high groups(n=28).The CONUT high group had worse overall survival(OS)(P=0.013)and relapse-free survival(RFS)(P=0.015).The predictive performance of CONUT was superior to the modified Glasgow prognostic score, the prognostic nutritional index, and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio.Meanwhile, the predictive performances of CONUT+tumor node metastasis(TNM)stage for 3-year OS[area under the receiver operating characteristics curve(AUC)=0.803]and 3-year RFS(AUC=0.752)were no less than skeletal muscle mass index(SMI)+TNM stage. The CONUT score was negatively correlated with SMI(P<0.01).CONCLUSION As a nutritional indicator, the CONUT score could predict long-term outcomes after radical surgery for colorectal cancer, and its predictive ability was superior to other indexes. The correlation between the CONUT score and skeletal muscle may be one of the factors that play a predictive role. 展开更多

The safty, rationality and the practicality of enteral nutrition (EN) support in the postoperative patients with damaged hepatic function were investigated and the protective effect of EN on the gut barrier and the clinical implication studied. Seventy six adult patients whose hepatic function were in Child B or C grade were randomly assigned in EN group (30 cases), total parenteral nutrition (TPN) group (26 cases) and control group (CON, 20 cases). The patients received different nutritional sopport. The signs of nutritional condition and hepatic function were massured at 1 day before, 5 days and 10 days after the surgical operation respectively. The changes in the urine lactulose (L) and mannitol (M) contents and L/M ratio were observed by using pulsed electrochemical detection (HPLC PED) to acquire the defferent effects among the different nutritional support performence. The results showed that the patients in the EN group and TPN group had no worse hepatic function damage after operation. The patients in the EN group reached the positive nitrogen balance earlier, had a less weight loss than in the TPN group with the difference being significant ( P <0 05). There was no obvious change in L/M ratio in the postoperative patients in the EN group ( P >0.05), but there was significant difference in L/M between TPN group and CON group ( P <0.05). It was concluded that EN was a rational, safe, effective and practical nutrition support mathod in the patients with damaged hepatic function patients after surgical operation and EN can effectively protect the structure and function of gut barrier from sever infection. 展开更多

Two flavoured extruded products were developed by co-extruding yam grits (750 μm) obtained from white yam (Dioscorea rotundata) and bambara groundnut flour (250 μm) in 160:40 respectively obtained from white bambara groundnut with added flavouring agents of salt (1% - 3%) and sugar (4% - 6%) in the feed blends at screw speed of 70 rpm, 17.5%, feed moisture and at the barrel temperature of 145℃. The extruded products were packaged in low density polyethylene bag (0.02 μm gauge size) and stored at room temperature (28℃ ± 2℃) and at refrigeration temperature (9℃ ± 2℃) for a period of twenty weeks. The microbiological changes in the extruded products as determined by the total plate under both storage conditions showed that maximum total plate counts were 0.5 × 104 and 5.4 × 104 cfu/g at 9℃ ± 2℃ and 28℃ ± 2℃ respectively. Nutritional evaluation studies of extrudates were comparable (p ≥ 0.05) with standard casein diet with minimum crude protein content of 13.51% providing 1707.2 KJ energy per 100gof diet and supported weight gain and growth of laboratory animals. 展开更多
