Rats (n = 12) treated with cocaine hydrochloride 20 mg/kg/ml, i.p. (COC group) were confined individually to the white chamber on days 1, 3, 5 and 7. On alternate days, they were given 1 ml saline vehicle, i.p. and confined to the black chamber. Control rats (SAL group, n = 12) received only vehicle on all 8 days and were confined on alternate days to the white or black chamber. Positive place preference was confirmed for COC rats, which subsequently received 6 increasing daily doses of cocaine. CPP performances of both COC and SAL rats were recorded following an acute 3-day withdrawal period. All animals were then randomly assigned to rats fed either chow reconstituted with the nutritional supplement (COC-S and SAL-S) or standard rat chow (COC-N and SAL-N) for 8 weeks, followed by final CPP performances. Results: Following supplementation, COC-S rats made significantly less entries and time spent in the white chamber (p < 0.05) compared with COC-N rats. COC-S rats exhibited significant place aversion to the white chamber similar to drug-naive animals;whereas COC-N continued to show positive place preference. Conclusion: Drug-seeking behavior that persisted during cocaine withdrawal was significantly diminished in the nutritionally supplemented.展开更多

Methods: Fifty-two cases of drug-induced superficial phlebitis after peripheral parenteral nutrition (PPN) were selected, which were randomly divided into experimental group and control group in accordance with the phlebitis grading. In the experimental group, Ji Desheng snake pills were crushed to make a paste with 50% glucose solution, which was then applied to the affected area of phlebitis, the surface was covered with clean gauze, and properly fixed with tape or bandage. The drug was replaced once a day. In the control group, the gauze soaked with 50% magnesium sulfate solution was used, which was applied to the affected part three times a day in wet, and the efficacy was observed respectively on the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th days after applying the drug. Results: On the 1st and 3rd days after treatment, the observed effective rate of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group (42.31% vs. 15.38% and 76.92% vs. 46.15%, respectively). The difference was statistically significant (p th and 7th days after treatment, there was no statistical significance with respect to the efficacy between the experimental group and the control group (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The significant efficacy could be found in early stage after drug-induced superficial phlebitis was treated by Ji Desheng snake pills combined with hypertonic glucose external application, which was superior to that of the traditional treatment of wet application by using gauze soaked in 50% magnesium sulfate solution.展开更多

A hospital-based interdisciplinary protocol was approved in which physically incompatible drugs could be converted from the IV (intravenous) or oral formulation to an enteral formulation and administered during a "no tube-feed" interval. Eligible patients included those receiving continuous TF (tube feed formulas) and enterally administered medications for at least 2 days while receiving a physically incompatible target drug from the protocol. The primary outcome was the percentage of physically incompatible target drugs successfully converted to the appropriate enteral formulation and administration time. The secondary outcomes were the cost savings of all enteral target drugs converted during each quarter based on a 7 day review and the total cost savings of each target drug converted during the entire study. The primary outcome of successful drug conversions to the appropriate enteral administration was 100% for 5 of the 6 quarters and 81 percent for one quarter. The secondary outcome of cost savings of all enteral drug conversions averaged $975 per quarter. Also, the cost savings of each of the enteral target drug conversions for the entire study was between $3,376 for the most costly drug and $26 for least costly drug. The study shows that an interdisciplinary protocol with "no tube-feed" intervals is a feasible and cost effective method to successfully optimize the absorption of physically incompatible drugs with enteral formulas during continuous tube feedings.展开更多
