Oil blending is the method of choice used worldwide to improve oxidative stability and nutritional value.There is no such edible oil/fat that meets all the recommendations from the health point of view.The fatty acid composition of vegetable oils decides the fate of the oil.Pure single oil is unable to provide a balanced amount of fatty acids(FAs)required/recommended on a daily intake basis.Blending oils/fats is an appropriate procedure of physically mixing multiple oils in suitable proportions which may provide functional lipids with improved antioxidant potential and desirable physical and chemical properties.This review piled up the accessible data on the blending of diverse oils/fats in the combination of binary,ternary,quaternary,or other types of oils into a single blended oil.Blending can be found very convincing towards appropriate FA profile,enhancement in physicochemical characteristics,and augmented stability for the period of storage or when used as cooking/frying processes which could ultimately serve as an effectual dietary intervention towards the health protectiveness. 展开更多

Most motor oils are made from mineral oils derived from petroleum, the reserves of which are limited and exhaustible. The aim of this study is to produce and characterize motor oil formulations based on mixtures of rubber latex cup bottom oil (RLCBO) and used frying oil (UFO). The results show that these formulations have a density between 0.91 and 0.92. These densities evolve linearly with the proportion of cup bottom oil and temperature. Similarly, the kinematic viscosity of the blends follows an exponential relationship with temperature. By plotting the logarithm of these kinematic viscosities against the inverse of the temperature, we were able to determine the activation energy of the various blends and deduce that the formulations behave Newtonian. 展开更多

Refineries often need to find similar crude oil to replace the scarce crude oil for stabilizing the feedstock property. We introduced the method for calculation of crude blended properties firstly, and then created a crude oil selection and blending optimization model based on the data of crude oil property. The model is a mixed-integer nonlinear programming(MINLP) with constraints, and the target is to maximize the similarity between the blended crude oil and the objective crude oil. Furthermore, the model takes into account the selection of crude oils and their blending ratios simultaneously, and transforms the problem of looking for similar crude oil into the crude oil selection and blending optimization problem. We applied the Improved Cuckoo Search(ICS) algorithm to solving the model. Through the simulations, ICS was compared with the genetic algorithm, the particle swarm optimization algorithm and the CPLEX solver. The results show that ICS has very good optimization efficiency. The blending solution can provide a reference for refineries to find the similar crude oil. And the method proposed can also give some references to selection and blending optimization of other materials. 展开更多

In this paper, a novel scheduling strategy is proposed for a practical crude oil blending process. The objective is to keep the property of feedstock, mainly described by the true boiling point (TBP) data, consistent and suitable. Firstly, the mathematical model is established. Then, a heuristically initialized hybrid iterative (HIHI) algorithm based on a two-level optimization structure, in which tabu search (TS) and differential evolution (DE) are used for upper-level and lower-level optimization, respectively, is proposed to get the model solution. Finally, the effectiveness and efficiency of the scheduling strategy is validated via real data from a certain refinery. 展开更多

Nowadays, people are busier and busier for working and living, and suffer a lot of pressure on their body or mind. Therefore, people are prone to have fatigue activity and decrease their working efficiency and happiness. It was reported that fatigue is a common symptom in the community, with up to half of the general population complaining of fatigue. More and more researchers devoted themselves to studying natural active ingredients in organism as the anti-fatigue drugs to release fatigue symptom. However, these natural ingredients were difficult to obtain from plants, animals and microorganisms by separating and purifying. In addition, some active substances have many side effects. In our study, we employed tea seed oil as main ingredients blended with bis-(carboxyethylgermanium) sesquioxide (Ge-132) to investigate the effects of anti-fatigue on mice by administrating mice with low dose, intermediate dose and high dose of tea seed oil complex for 0, 2 or 4 weeks. The specific tests of studying effects of anti-fatigue were body weight, weight-loaded force swimming, blood urea nitrogen, blood lactic acid and hepaticglycogen. And the results showed that appropriate level of tea seed oil complex could decrease the body weight and prolong the weight-loaded swimming time, and had an active effect on the bloodurea nitrogen, hepatic glycogen and blood lactic acid level mice, which significantly embodied the anti-fatigue activity of tea seed oil complex. 展开更多

The climate change and limitation of natural resources becomes main obstacle for the global economical development. So, the Vietnamese Government is very much concerned with reduction of harmful gas discharging from the inland-water way ships. To overcome the problems, there are many counter-measures proposed such as: renovation of machinery and equipment, using re-creative energy and so on. The author's idea is to find a suitable method which can be applied on board of the inland-water ships to reduce discharging toxic gas by using blended palm oil as alternative fuel for marine diesel engines. Due to some disadvantages of the bended palm oil in comparison with traditional DO (diesel oil), such as: low freezing point, high viscosity, low stability of blended fue, therefore somehow, the blended palm oil must be made a ship directly on board. With this idea, the author has designed and made agitate mixing equipment working on-line with fuel supply system of a diesel engine. The mixing equipment, then, has been tested at shore-side laboratory as well as on board ships. The research results showed that the fuel mixture (palm oil-DO) made by this mixing equipment is fully usable to replace traditional DO for marine diesel engines installed on board ships of inland water way in Vietnam. The Vietnamese Government accepted the research results as prerequisite to devise specific and practical action plans to reduce the pollution from the inland water way ships in coming years. 展开更多

Blended oils have many uses when compared with single oils,due to presence of high Omega9 levels.They help in brain development and reduce the risk of heart diseases.This investigation of blended oils was chosen taking into consideration the regular use of coconut oil(CO),palm oil(PAO),peanut oil(PO),and groundnut oil(GO),and using these blends three popular South Indian snacks were prepared.The oil blending was in the proportion of 50:50 using four different oils.This study includes the physicochemical properties of blended oils such as their p H,colour,nutritional assessment,and changes in the parameters of mixed oils.Additionally,these oil mixes were utilized for preparing different types of gram flour snacks including potato fries,pakoda,and karasev.The shelf life of the snacks was studied,considering the changes in their synthetic and tangible attributes.The changes seen in the oil separated from the fried items were very close to that of the control.Tangible assessment of the prepared fritters showed that they were synthetically safe to eat for up to two weeks.Six oil blends(CO:PO,CO:PAO,CO:GO,PO:GO,PO:PAO,and GO:PAO)were prepared successfully.Among the blended oils,coconut oil with peanut oil showed the highest spread ability,while groundnut oil with palm oil showed the lowest spread ability.The coconut and groundnut oil blend showed the highest ratio(58.8%)of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids.Polyunsaturated linoleic acid(18:2;24.3%),α-linoleic acid(18:2;5%),oleic acid(18:1;25%),capric acid(2.8%),lauric acid(1.8%),myristic acid(1.6%),palmitic acid(16:0;14.5%),and steric acid(18:0;9.2%)were seen in the coconut and groundnut oil blend.The palm and peanut oil blend showed the least ratio(51.4%)for unsaturated and saturated oils,with oleic acid(21%),lauric acid(1.9%),andα-linoleic acid(2%).Among all the blended oils,coconut oil mixed with groundnut oil showed the highest level of acceptability for gram flour products.The content of free fatty acids was very high in the combination of palm and peanut oil.The three gram flour products prepared using blends of coconut oil and groundnut oil showed good appearance(8%),flavour of the product prepared with combinations of groundnut(refined)oil has high acceptability,good texture(8%),high acceptability(8%)in taste and overall acceptability of sensory evaluation.These blends in the future may develop good quality oils giving a high shelf life to food products. 展开更多

Effect of Blended Rice Bran and Olive Oil on Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Hyperlipidemic Patients

The present study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of blended rice bran and olive oil on hyperlipidemic subjects. A total of 60 moderately hyperlipidemic patients (Total Cholesterol (TC) >200 mg/dl and/or Triglycerides (TG) >150 mg/dl) with an age range of 45 - 60 were selected from Mediciti Hospital of Ludhiana and were divided into two groups: Group A and Group B containing 30 subjects each. The subjects of Group B were given blended rice bran and olive oil for a time period of 45 days and were asked to continue with their routine eating and physical activity pattern. The subjects of Group A were kept on their regular cooking oil. The serum lipid values were assessed before and after the study. Additional parameters assessed included anthropometry, dietary fat intake and physical activity pattern. The results showed that there was an insignificant change in the average body mass index (BMI) of the subjects of Group B before (27.0 kg/m2) and after (26.9 kg/m2) the study respectively. Also, there was an insignificant change in the lipid levels of the subjects of Group B after the study. The levels of TC and LDL cholesterol decreased by 3.7 and 9.0 percent respectively. Whereas, the levels of TG and VLDL cholesterol increased by 9.5 percent in the subjects of Group B after the feeding trials. Further, systolic and diastolic blood pressure of the subjects of Group B reduced by 2.9 and 2.3 percent respectively. An insignificant change was observed in all the parameters of selected subjects. So, the present study recommends carrying out more long duration research studies to evaluate the effectiveness of this blended oil. 展开更多

To Blend or Not to Blend? Anxiety Buffering Effects of Essential Oil Aromas

Essential oils of pure lavender and lavender blends have been employed as potential anxiolytic aromas in aromatherapy, but a direct comparison of their effectiveness is lacking. The current study investigated the effects of aroma on induced anxiety in non-clinical adults, comparing pure lavender, a commercially available blend and a no aroma control. An experimental, quantitative, mixed factorial design with an opportunity sample of 60 participants was employed. Participants were randomly allocated to three equal groups, one tested in a room infused with lavender aroma, the second with the doTerra Peace<sup>®</sup> blend, and the third free from any aroma. Participants’ state anxiety scores were measured before and after a novel video-based anxiety induction procedure. Data analysis revealed that the anxiety induction was successful and that both aromas delivered small to medium-sized buffering effects compared to no aroma. The findings add to a small body of research in an area where the practice is global yet has limited scientific evaluation. Future studies utilising brain imaging and blood serum analysis to investigate the anxiolytic mechanism of aromas would be beneficial to further our understanding. 展开更多

This work focuses on blending Jatropha oil with diesel fuel and heptane to improve its physico-chemical characteristics for production of blends and their use as fuel in a diesel engine. The influence of the heptane content was evaluated by comparing the results obtained from the engine (performance and combustion parameters) with those of the diesel fuel and straight Jatropha oil. The results obtained show an improvement in engine performance especially at low loads. Specifically, a reduction in the specific fuel consumption of the engine is obtained when the heptane content in the mixture is around 10% compared to that obtained with pure Jatropha oil. The best results were obtained with the blend containing 70% Jatropha oil, 20% diesel fuel and 10% heptane (J70G20H10). Overall engine efficiency and exhaust gas temperatures are comparable for all fuels tested. Engine combustion parameters are improved with J70G20H10. The results obtained with J70G20H10 are close to those of the engine operating on diesel fuel. The cyclic dispersion is low with coefficients of variation of the indicated mean effective pressure (COV<sub>IMEP</sub>) whose values are less than 10%. The lowest values of the COV<sub>IMEP</sub> are obtained with the blend J70G20H10. 展开更多

Oxidative degradation of sunflower oil blended with roasted sesame oil during heating at frying temperature

The efficacy of roasted sesame oil(SO)on the oxidation deterioration of sunflower oil(SFO)during heating was investigated.The concentrations of SO in the SFO were 0,10%,20%,and 30%by volume.The oxidation profile of oil samples was monitored by evaluating the generation of oxidation products and chemical alterations in the oils'composition during heating at frying temperature(180℃).The results showed that the oxidation parameters(free fatty acid,peroxide value,p-anisidine value,total oxidation status,thiobarbituric acid value,and color index)increased significantly in SFO compared to blends or SO during thermal treatment.During heating,the concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFA)was reduced with increased level of saturated fatty acids;these results were observed more in SFO than those of SO or blend oils.However,the presence of SO in SFO reduced the decomposition of PUFA.In Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy,the peak intensities were significantly altered in SFO compared to the blend oils during heating.Based on the most analytical data,it may be agreed that the heating at frying temperature led to the generation of relatively higher contents of oxidative products in SFO compared to blend oils,showing a lower degree of oxidation occurred in blends.The best frying performance for the SFO was achieved by using 30%SO extracted from the roasted sesame seed.This study showed the proper blending of high polyunsaturated oil with SO can produce oil blends with high nutritional values and enhanced stability for daily cooking and deep-frying applications. 展开更多

Oil depots along products pipelines are important components of the pipeline transportation system and down-stream markets.The operating costs of oil depots account for a large proportion of the total system’s operating costs.Meanwhile,oil depots and pipelines form an entire system,and each operation in a single oil depot may have influence on others.It is a tough job to make a scheduling plan when considering the factors of delivering contaminated oil and batches migration.So far,studies simultaneously considering operating constraints and contaminated oil issues are rare.Aiming at making a scheduling plan with the lowest operating costs,the paper establishes a mixed-integer linear programming model,considering a sequence of operations,such as delivery, export, blending,fractionating and exchanging operations,and batch property differences of the same oil as well as influence of batch migration on contaminated volume.Moreover,the paper verifies the linear relationship between oil concentration and blending capability by mathematical deduction.Finally,the model is successfully applied to one of the product pipelines in China and proved to be practical. 展开更多

In this study, sesamin was selected as marker of sesame oil to verify authentication of blended oil with sesame oil on label. A simple method based on liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) combined with solid-phase extraction (SPE) was used to detect sesamin. It has high sensitivity with low limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) being 20 ng/mL and 70 ng/mL respectively. Recoveries from 80.16% to 102.50% in 4 different oils indicated it’s reliable to quantify sesamin in edible oil. Four blended oils were used as validation samples and results showed this method could effectively detect whether sesame oil exists. In this study, a simple method was proposed for sesamin determination by LC-MS/MS and SPE in edible oils for the first time and provided an effective guide to identify authenticity of blended oils. 展开更多

Blending of polymers has gained much interest due to the fact that, it can be used to produce new polymeric materials with specific properties suitable for some special applications. The blends from acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), chloroprene rubber (CR) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has been designed for products working in contact with oils. The characteristics of the designed blends either binary blends (NBR/PVC or PVC/CR) or ternary blends (NBR/ PVC/CR) were investigated by rheological properties, mechanical analysis and swelling in oil and toluene. It was found that the incorporation of PVC in the blend compositions leads to the decrease in degree of swelling, the penetration rate and the average diffusion coefficient. On the other hand the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), the hardness and strain energy were increased. This was attributed to the plastic nature of PVC, beside its additional behavior as filler. The crosslinking density in the blend vulcanizates under investigations was determined by Flory-Rehner and Mooney-Rivlin [Stress/Strain] equations. The higher values of crosslinking density determined by Mooney-Rivlin can be attributed to the additional physical crosslinks (e.g. entanglements etc), beside the chemical crosslinks determined by swelling in toluene. This study showed that NBR/PVC blends are characterized with high performance oil resistant, which can be recommended to automotive industry. 展开更多

A one-step method was developed to extract oil from a mixture of soybeans,peanuts,linseeds,and tea seeds using an aqueous enzymatic method.The proportion of the four seeds was targeted in accordance with a fatty acid ratio of 0.27(SFA,saturated fatty acid(s))∶1(MUFA,monounsaturated fatty acid(s))∶1(PUFA,polyunsaturated fatty acid(s)),and the oil extraction yield was maximized by applying the simplex-centroid mixture design method.Three models were developed for describing the relationship between the proportion of the individual seeds in the mixture,the fatty acid ratio in the extracted oil,and the oil extraction yield,respectively.The developed models were then analyzed using an ANOVA and were found to fit the data quite well,with R2 values of 0.98,0.93,and 0.93,respectively.The three models were validated experimentally.The results indicated that the ratio of fatty acids in the oil ranged between 0.98 and 1.12(MUFA∶PUFA)and between 0.26 and 0.28(SFA∶MUFA),which were quite close to the target values of 1 and 0.27,respectively.The oil extraction yield of 62.13%was slightly higher than the predicted value(60.32%). 展开更多

结合脂肪酸组成和化学计量学方法,对大豆油、菜籽油及其不同比例的二元调和油的识别进行基础研究,并分析不同比例调和油中脂肪酸含量的变化。结果表明在大豆油和菜籽油中,共检出脂肪酸组分17种,主要以油酸、亚油酸、棕榈酸和亚麻酸为主... 结合脂肪酸组成和化学计量学方法,对大豆油、菜籽油及其不同比例的二元调和油的识别进行基础研究,并分析不同比例调和油中脂肪酸含量的变化。结果表明在大豆油和菜籽油中,共检出脂肪酸组分17种,主要以油酸、亚油酸、棕榈酸和亚麻酸为主。在以不同比例低芥酸菜籽油和大豆油调配的调和油中,脂肪酸含量随调和比例的改变而呈现一定趋势的增加或减小。结合脂肪酸组成,对所有的139个样品进行了主成分分析(PCA),结果表明大豆油和菜籽油可以互相实现区分,不同比例的调和油样品分布在调配的溯源样品之间,基本按照比例关系分布成一条直线。研究通过对菜籽油、大豆油及其不同比例调配的调和油的脂肪酸组成进行了定量分析,分析了它们之间脂肪酸组成的变化,并结合化学计量学手段进行一些识别分析,为规范调和油的生产和保障公平有序的调和油市场提供参考。 展开更多

Effect of Waste Oil-Cracking Catalyst Incorporation on Durability of Mortars

This paper presents research on transport properties and alkali-silica reaction (ASR) susceptibility of mortars containing a pozzolanic waste generated in the fluid catalytic cracking (wFCC) unit by the Portuguese oil-refinery. For this purpose, two series of mortars were prepared by partially replacing cement with 5%, 10% and 15% of wFCC catalyst. The main difference between the two series of mortars is the sand reactivity used in their composition. The results revealed that wFCC catalyst blended cement mortars exhibit an increased resistance against capillary water absorption and chloride migration, as well as a considerable inhibition effect on deleterious ASR expansion. However, under the adopted experimental conditions the incorporation of wFCC catalyst in mortars decreases their carbonation resistance. 展开更多
