Background:During the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in China, social interactions shifted to online spaces due to lockdowns and social distancing measures. As a result, the impact of online social networking on users’emotional status has become stronger than ever. This study examines the association between online social networking and Internet users’emotional status and how offline reality affects this relationship. Methods:The study utilizes cross-sectional online survey data(n=3004)and Baidu Migration big data from the first 3 months of the pandemic. Two dimensions of online networking are measured:social support and information sources. Results:First, individuals’online social support(β=0.16,p<0.05)and information sources(β=0.08,p<0.01)are both positively associated to their emotional status during the epidemic.Second, these positive associations are moderated by social status and provincial pandemic control interventions. With regards to the moderation effect of social status, the constructive impact of information sources on emotional well-being is more pronounced among individuals from vulnerable groups compared to those who are not. With regard to the moderation effect of provincial interventions, online social support has the potential to alleviate the adverse repercussions of high rates of confirmed COVID-19 cases and strict lockdown measures while simultaneously augmenting the favorable effects of recovery. Conclusion:The various dimensions of social networking exert distinct effects on emotional status through diverse mechanisms, all of which must be taken into account when designing and adapting pandemic-control interventions. 展开更多

The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of 4-day of cold and crowding stressors and social status on pig immune responsiveness to these stressors. Three unfamiliar white crossbred female pigs were mixed and assigned to ambient temperatures of either 8°C (COLD) or 22°C (control;TN) and floor-space of either 0.26 m2/pig (reduced, CROWD) or 0.45 m2/pig (adequate, CONT) over six blocks (n = 72). Pigs were identified as dominant (DOM), intermediate (INT), or submissive (SUB) based on aggressive encounters that occurred during the first 24-h post-mixing. There were no interactive effects of temperature × floor-space on immune indices. There was social status × stressor for body weight, natural killer (NK) cell cytotoxicity and phagocytosis (P < 0.05). DOM pigs that were COLD or CROWD gained the least amount of body weight compared to either INT or SUB pigs (P < 0.01). INT and SUB pigs subjected to CROWD stress gained more weight compared to their counterparts subjected to COLD temperature or CONT floor-space (P < 0.05). NK cytotoxicity was greater among CROWD-INT pigs and phagocytosis was greater among COLD- and CROWD-SUB pigs. Also, INT pigs had lower T and B cell proliferation regardless of the stressor. COLD stress significantly reduced NK cytotoxicity, total Immunoglobulin-G, and B-cell proliferation and enhanced total WBC counts and T-cell proliferation. These data imply that various immune indices were either enhanced or suppressed by COLD stress, but concurrent exposure to CROWD stressor did not exacerbate these effects. Moreover, social status played a role in determining a pig’s immune responsiveness as it modulated differential homeostatic stress response as the pig attempted to cope with stress. 展开更多

Health checks are key features of primary and secondary disease prevention. The aim of this study was to examine the sex- and age-specific association of social status and health-related behaviors with health check attendance in eligible persons. Data were derived from the Kanazawa Study 2011 (n = 12,781), a cross-sectional study which investigated all the residents in model areas of Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. We selected participants aged 23 years or older with National Health Insurance (n = 4920). Attendance at health checks was the outcome. We used social status and health-related behaviors as predictor variables. We analyzed them by sex and applied stratified analyses by age groups for each sex. The bivariate analyses were conducted by means of cross-tabs. We calculated health check attendance rates by each variable. We used Pearson’s χ2-test to examine statistically significant differences. We fitted logistic regression models to estimate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) of attendance in the past one year. We computed ORs in a logistic regression model containing all variables described above. Workingmen and women aged 23 to 39 years and aged 40 to 64 years had significantly increased ORs for health check attendance compared with non-working persons. Men, men aged 23 to 39 years and men aged 65 years or older with more physical activity had significantly increased ORs for health check attendance. Male ex-smokers, female ex- and non-smokers, male ex-smokers aged 65 years or older, and female non-smokers aged 40 to 64 years had significantly increased ORs. The findings suggest that population groups with lower social status or increased risks of adverse health effects are less likely to attend health checks than those with higher social status or decreased risks in particular sex and age groups. It indicates that diverse approaches are required to realize the full benefit of health checks. 展开更多

The research was conducted in order to determine differences in the social status structure of male and female performers of folk dances. For the purpose of determining the social status structure of male and female dancers, 103 male and 145 female dancers aged 18-28 actively engaged in folk dancing were tested. For the assessment of social status, only one model that allows for true scientific approach to studying the structure of stratification dimensions has been made so far. The model was constructed by Saksida and later served as a basis for many studies conducted by other authors as well (Saksida, Caserman, Petrovic, Momirovic, and Hosek). Designed as a phenomenological model, it has undergone several changes over time, but it is still suitable for studying social change. The INST2 questionnaire modified by Boli, Popovic, Hosek, Momirovic, and Savic (SSMIN) was applied in this study. All the data obtained in this research were processed at the Multidisciplinary Research Center of the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education, University of Pristina, through the system of data processing programs designed by D. Popovic and K Momirovic. To determine differences between the groups, a method of discriminant analysis was applied. 展开更多

Africa faces significant challenges in terms of material and personnel resources for oncology interventions. This is particularly evident in South Africa, where resources are divided into high- and low-resource settings. High-resource settings cater to those with financial means to access private oncology facilities. However, many breast cancer patients receive care in South Africa’s low-resource settings, such as public hospital oncology clinics. Unfortunately, these settings have limited service providers and fail to offer comprehensive interventions, resulting in poor outcomes. However, recent research has highlighted the significance of socially supportive relationships in promoting healing and overall individual well-being, and spirituality has been identified as a source of positive outcomes in cancer patients. This systematic review paper explores the feasibility of implementing support group cancer care and interventions that incorporate social support networks available in community settings, and spiritual practices facilitated by traditional healers, and religious/spiritual leaders. These interventions can be provided within low-resource settings to women diagnosed with breast cancer. Inclusive participation of spouses, children, and extended family in the support group cancer care can facilitate healing for the entire system. Focusing on the strengths and resources within communities and incorporating these complementary services, can enhance the well-being and quality of life for Black African women diagnosed with breast cancer, despite low-resource settings. This approach acknowledges the potential of community-based support networks and encourages collaboration between various stakeholders, including community health educators, nurses, lay counselors, and community volunteers, to address the complex needs of these patients. 展开更多

Sociologists Rex and Moore first raised the housing class theory in 19671,stating that people can be grouped into different classes according to their housing conditions.Defining classes by housing standards seems too simple, though, which is why this theory is controversial. In order to avoid the same confusion of social class, this paper employs the concept of "housing status group." Like economic status, people's housing status is normally relatively stable and unlikely to significantly change in a short time span. But China is an exception as the past 30 years have witnessed tremendous institutional reform, particularly in the housing system.Almost overnight, public housing became privatized and the real estate market developed. This transformation also meant an abrupt change in the status of social groups in relation to housing-for the better or worse. From the social stratification perspective, this has also been an important period of reshaping social status. Thus,it is of great signif icance to study "housing status groups" during the transitional period to shed light on a myriad of social ills. 展开更多

Migration continues to serve as platform for financial and social empowerment in many countries including Ghana. There are many constraints associated with the life of migrants;however, the quest to be socially acknowledged enables them to adopt certain survival strategies.Using qualitative methodology, this paper examines Ghanaians migration to the Netherlands using the concept of“burger”.This research work highlights that some Ghanaian migrants travel with the goal of earning money to meet their personal and family needs, and so engage in any available job to build and maintain their new burger status. As burgers, they have to obtain enough money to maintain their elevated social status but need to ensure that relatives and friends in Ghana do not know how this money is obtained. To maintain the new“privilege”social status often ascribed to Ghanaians living abroad, migrants are compelled to juggle their work, income, and lifestyle in the Netherlands and(mis)-representation of themselves in Ghana. 展开更多

Background: Many studies examined and reported oral and general health inequalities in clinical health, SROH and SRH. Objectives: The study aims to explore the social influences, gradients and predictors of self-rated oral health (SROH) and self-rated health (SRH) and wellbeing in Greek adults. Methods: Cross-sectional study, of men and women, aged 65 years and over (N = 743) in Greece. Descriptive and statistical analyses were performed for dentate and edentulous participants. For the association between socioeconomic exposures and binary outcomes, logistic regression was performed to estimate Odds Ratios and 95% Confidence Intervals (OR, 95% CI);levels of association and Cramer’s V were applied to calculate associations and p-values. Results: The objective socioeconomic measures, such as household income, education level and last main occupation were significant predictors and determinants of both SROH and self-rated health (SRH). For Satisfaction with life (SWL), there was a diversity in the results analogous to the dental status of the participants. Household income and SSS were predictors of SWL in dentate participants. In the total sample Household income, occupation and SSS, were predictors of SWL, while in edentulous participants only occupation and SSS were statistically significant (<em>p</em> < 0.05). Subjective social status was statistically significant for SROH, SRH and SWL (<em>p</em> < 0.01). More men than women reported their SROH and SRH as good. Household income and SSS were predictors of SWL, in dentate participants, thus the better the income and the higher the relative social status, the higher feeling of SWL was recorded. Place of residence had significant associations only with SWL. Household income, education, occupation and SSS had significant levels of association with SROH and SRH in dentate participants (<em>p</em> < 0.05). Conclusion: There are socioeconomic gradient inequalities in SROH and SRH in Greek adults living in Attica area. Subjective social status is a predictor of SROH, SRH and SWL. The need to prioritize interventions to eliminate disparities and inequalities in oral and general health and wellbeing of elders is evident. 展开更多

Poor socioeconomic status and inappropriate management services in developing countries lead to various complications despite the fact that most of these diseases are self-limiting. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and pattern of ear diseases in school children of high and low socioeconomic status in Yola, Nigeria. <strong>Methods:</strong> This study was conducted in March 2017 in two primary schools (private and public) in Yola among 6 - 8 years old pupils. Approval for the study was obtained from Federal Medical Centre, Yola and consent was obtained from the parents/guardians and the school authorities. Using a health questionnaire, a brief ENT history was obtained from children in years 1 and 2 of each school. Otoscopic examination, audiometry and tympanometry were then carried out. Data collected was analysed using SPSS version 20. <strong>Results:</strong> One hundred and three children were studied. The age range was 6 - 8 with mean age of 6.8 ± 0.9 and 53 (51.5%) boys. Fifty-two (50.5%) were from public school (low socio-economic class) and 51 (49.5%) from private (high social class). Wax was the most common ear condition encountered affecting 37 (35.9%) children, and the number was similar in both groups. Otitis media with effusion (OME) was encountered in seven children evenly split between the two groups showing a point incidence of 6.8%. There was hearing loss in 13 (12.6%) children, and this was also similar in the two groups. <strong>Conclusion:</strong> Wax impaction was the commonest otologic disease encountered. Our study also showed a point incidence of 6.8% for OME, but there was no statistical difference between the two groups, and neither was there any statistically significant difference between the two groups in any of the other diseases encountered. 展开更多

This paper investigates the social networks usage by students in Abidjan city, C&ocirc;te d’Ivoire. We focus on a descriptive or quantitative analysis to understand the motivations and how students make use of internet and social networks. More than six hundred forms were distributed to persons we have deemed as students. In return, we received more than 93% of the forms that have been processed. The study highlights the materials and the digital platforms that students used the most. The majority of the respondents reported to have access to the social networks in their mobile phones, with WhatsApp leading this application ranking, followed by Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Tik Tok. The survey shows that two third of our respondents are aged from 19 to 25 years old and almost half of the respondents spend daily 2 to 5 hours on digital platforms. The investigation also reveals that the main online activities are the e-commerce, chatting, information, and entertainment. The paper addresses also the online harassment of the students and it shows that more than one tenth of them have been victims of cyber-bullying. This study might be useful for governments, institutions, academia, individuals and professionals in order to communicate efficiently with a given population for a better use of social networks and to prevent students from harassment. 展开更多
