Registrations based on the manual placement of spherical targets are still being employed by many professionals in the industry. However, the placement of those targets usually relies solely on personal experience without scientific evidence supported by numerical analysis. This paper presents a comprehensive investigation, based on Monte Carlo simulation, into determining the optimal number and positions for efficient target placement in typical scenes consisting of a pair of facades. It demonstrates new check-up statistical rules and geometrical constraints that can effectively extract and analyze massive simulations of unregistered point clouds and their corresponding registrations.More than 6×10^(7) sets of the registrations were simulated, whereas more than IOO registrations with real data were used to verify the results of simulation. The results indicated that using five spherical targets is the best choice for the registration of a large typical registration site consisting of two vertical facades and a ground, when there is only a box set of spherical targets available. As a result, the users can avoid placing extra targets to achieve insignificant improvements in registration accuracy. The results also suggest that the higher registration accuracy can be obtained when the ratio between the facade-to-target distance and target-to-scanner distance is approximately 3:2.Therefore,the targets should be placed closer to the scanner rather than in the middle between the facades and the scanner, contradicting to the traditional thought. Besides, the results reveal that the accuracy can be increased by setting the largest projected triangular area of the targets to be large. 展开更多

To study the anti-explosion protection effect of polyurea coating on reinforced concrete box girder, two segmental girder specimens were made at a scale of 1:3,numbered as G(without polyurea coating)and PCG(with polyurea coating). The failure characteristics and dynamic responses of the specimens were compared through conducting explosion tests. The reliability of the numerical simulation using LS-DYNA software was verified by the test results. The effects of different scaled distances, reinforcement ratios, concrete strengths, coating thicknesses and ranges of polyurea were studied. The results show that the polyurea coating can effectively enhance the anti-explosion performance of the girder. The top plate of middle chamber in specimen G forms an elliptical penetrating hole, while that in specimen PCG only shows a very slight local dent. The peak vertical displacement and residual displacement of PCG decrease by 74.8% and 73.7%,respectively,compared with those of specimen G.For the TNT explosion with small equivalent, the polyurea coating has a more significant protective effect on reducing the size of fracture. With the increase of TNT equivalent, the protective effect of polyurea on reducing girder displacement becomes more significant. The optimal reinforcement ratio, concrete strength, thickness and range of polyurea coating were also drawn. 展开更多

The widespread utilisation of tunnel boring machines(TBMs)in underground construction engineering requires a detailed investigation of the cutter-rock interaction. In this paper,we conduct a series of largescale standing rotary cutting tests on granite in conjunction with high-fidelity numerical simulations based on a particle-type discrete element method(DEM)to explore the effects of key cutting parameters on the TBM cutter performance and the distribution of cutter-rock contact stresses. The assessment results of cutter performance obtained from the cutting tests and numerical simulations reveal similar dependencies on the key cutting parameters.More specifically, the normal and rolling forces exhibit a positive correlation with penetration but are slightly influenced by the cutting radius. In contrast, the side force decreases as the cutting radius increases.Additionally, the side force shows a positive relationship with the penetration for smaller cutting radii but tends to become negative as the cutting radius increases. The cutter's relative effectiveness in rock breaking is significantly impacted by the penetration but shows little dependency on the cutting radius.Consequently,an optimal penetration is identified, leading to a low boreability index and specific energy.A combined Hertz-Weibull function is developed to fit the cutter-rock contact stress distribution obtained in DEM simulations, whereby an improved CSM(Colorado School of Mines)model is proposed by replacing the original monotonic cutting force distribution with this combined Hertz-Weibull model. The proposed model outperforms the original CSM model as demonstrated by a comparison of the estimated cutting forces with those from the tests/simulations.The findings from this work that advance our understanding of TBM cutter performance have important implications for improving the efficiency and reliability of TBM tunnelling in granite. 展开更多

Based on numerical simulations, this study highlights the sedimentation and erosion problems around a sand barrier through the relationship between the shear stress of the surface around the sand barrier and the critical shear stress of sand grains. The numerical simulation results were verified using data measured by the wind tunnel test. The results showed that when the porosity was the same, the size and position of the vortex on the leeward side of the sand barrier were related to the inlet wind speed. As the wind speed increased, the vortex volume increased and the positions of the separation and reattachment points moved toward the leeward side. When the porosity of the sand barrier was 30%,the strength of the acceleration zone above the sand barrier was the highest, and the strength of the acceleration zone was negatively correlated with the porosity.Sand erosion and sedimentation distance were related to wind speed. With an increase in wind speed, the sand grain forward erosion or reverse erosion areas on the leeward side of the sand barrier gradually replaced the sedimentation area. With an increase in porosity, the sand sedimentation distance on the leeward side of the sand barrier gradually shortened, and the sand erosion area gradually disappeared. The sand sedimentation distance on the leeward side of the sand barrier with 30%porosity was the longest. The numerical simulation results were in good agreement with the wind tunnel test results.Based on the sand erosion and sedimentation results of the numerical simulation and wind tunnel test, when the porosity was 30%,the protection effect of the High Density Polyethylene(HDPE)board sand barrier was best. 展开更多

Fracture propagation is affected by multi-metal-veins formed by geological diagenesis in shale during the hydraulic fracturing. However, the influence of multi-metal-veins on fractures propagation remains unclear. To solve the problem, based on the semi-circle bending(SCB)test and the extended finite element(XFEM)theory, the interaction between multi-metal-veins and fractures is investigated. The experimental results reveal that the fractures usually deflect at the upper or lower interfaces between metal veins and rocks(e.g.the specimen S-2),which is different from the propagation behavior of fractures in calcite veins.Meanwhile, the fracture toughness of the specimen S-1 is 24.40%higher than that of the specimen S-2,indicating that the increasing of total thickness of multiple metal veins in-creases the resistance to the fracture vertical propagation. The simulation results show that the increasing of the number, total thickness of veins, the modulus difference between veins and rock, the approach angle and the notch angle all increase the resistance of the fracture passing through metal veins. The maximum deviation distance(Dmax)of the fracture decreases with the number of veins, while thickness combination types of metal veins do not affect Dmax. The reduction of the notch angle leads to the more tortuous fracture propagation path. Finally,we propose a new comprehensive fracture network pattern.Fracture networks are divided into two categories, including orthogonal fracture networks and sub-orthogonal fracture networks, and then divided into six sub-categories further. The research results will provide reference for hydraulic fracturing of shale reservoirs containing multi-metal-veins. 展开更多

Shake table testing was performed to investigate the dynamic stability of a mid-dip bedding rock slope under frequent earthquakes. Then, numerical modelling was established to further study the slope dynamic stability under purely microseisms and the influence of five factors, including seismic amplitude, slope height, slope angle, strata inclination and strata thickness, were considered. The experimental results show that the natural frequency of the slope decreases and damping ratio increases as the earthquake loading times increase. The dynamic strength reduction method is adopted for the stability evaluation of the bedding rock slope in numerical simulation, and the slope stability decreases with the increase of seismic amplitude, increase of slope height, reduction of strata thickness and increase of slope angle. The failure mode of a mid-dip bedding rock slope in the shaking table test is integral slipping along the bedding surface with dipping tensile cracks at the slope rear edge going through the bedding surfaces. In the numerical simulation, the long-term stability of a mid-dip bedding slope is worst under frequent microseisms and the slope is at risk of integral sliding instability, whereas the slope rock mass is more broken than shown in the shaking table test. The research results are of practical significance to better understand the formation mechanism of reservoir landslides and prevent future landslide disasters. 展开更多

The seismic safety of the reinforcement dam slope is studied through shaking table test and numerical simulation. The dynamic characteristics of dam slopes, failure mechanism, seismic stability,as well as the effect of reinforcement during earthquakes are discussed. An elasto-plastic analysis method (FLAC) is used to simulate the dynamic failure process of the reinforcement dam slope. The change law of permanent displacement of dam slope is studied. The effect of the length and the space of reinforcement on the depth of slip surface and the slope stability are investigated.Good agreement is obtained between the numerical results and those from shaking table tests. The results show that the dynamic failure is a gradual process not at a particular time. With the increase of the reinforcement length or the decreasing reinforcement spacing, the slip surface becomes deeper and thus the slope stability is improved. The reinforcement can obviously enhance the overall stability of slope dam.It can also effectively control the shallow sliding of slope. These researches provide basic data for reinforcement measures design of earth-rockfill dam. 展开更多

During the process of archaeological excavation in the regions of Southeast China, collapse of test square usually occurs due to poor site-specific conditions. In this paper, the fast Lagrangian analysis of continua in three dimensions(FLAC3D) is employed to reveal the behaviors of test square. Taking the archaeological works in Liangzhu prehistoric earthen sites as the research background, the paper first introduces the geological setting, excavation procedure and monitoring scheme of the studied test square. Then, the deformation of four sides of the test square is modeled using FLAC3D. By comparison, it shows that the numerical results are consistent with the results from field monitoring. The result suggests that the numerical simulation can be effectively applied to representing the actual behaviors of the test square, which is helpful for determination of excavation scheme and stability evaluation of the test square during archaeological excavation. 展开更多

Modulated high frequency (HF) heating of the ionosphere provides a feasible means of artificially generating ex- tremely low frequency (ELF)/very low frequency (VLF) whistler waves, which can leak into the inner magnetosphere and contribute to resonant interactions with high energy electrons. Combining the ray tracing method and test particle simulations, we evaluate the effects of energetic electron resonant scattering driven by the discrete, multi-frequency arti- ficially generated ELF/VLF waves. The simulation results indicate a stochastic behavior of electrons and a linear profile of pitch angle and kinetic energy variations averaged over all test electrons. These features are similar to those associated with single-frequency waves. The computed local diffusion coefficients show that, although the momentum diffusion of relativistic electrons due to artificial ELF/VLF whistlers with a nominal amplitude of ~ 1 pT is minor, the pitch angle scattering can be notably efficient at low pitch angles near the loss cone, which supports the feasibility of artificial triggering of multi-frequency ELF/VLF whistler waves for the removal of high energy electrons from the magnetosphere. We also investigate the dependences of diffusion coefficients on the frequency interval (△f) of the discrete, multi-frequency waves. We find that there is a threshold value of Af for which the net diffusion coefficient of multi-frequency whistlers is inversely proportional to △f (proportional to the frequency components Nw) when △f is below the threshold value but it remains unchanged with increasing Af when △f is larger than the threshold value. This is explained as being due to the fact that the resonant scattering effect of broadband waves is the sum of the effects of each frequency in the 'effective frequency band'. Our results suggest that the modulation frequency of HF heating of the ionosphere can be appropriately selected with reasonable frequency intervals so that better performance of controlled precipitation of high energy electrons in the plasmasphere by artificial ELF/VLF whistler waves can be achieved. 展开更多

Using the test particle simulation method, we investigate the stochastic motion of electrons with energy of 300 keV in a monochromatic magnetosonic(MS) wave field. This study is motivated by the violation of the quasi-linear theory assumption, when strong MS waves(amplitude up to ~1 nT) are present in the Earth's magnetosphere. First, electron motion can become stochastic when the wave amplitude exceeds a certain threshold. If an electron initially resonates with the MS wave via bounce resonance, as the bounce resonance order increases, the amplitude threshold of electron stochastic motion increases until it reaches the peak at about the 11 th order in our study, then the amplitude threshold slowly declines. Further, we find that the coexistence of bounce and Landau resonances between electrons and MS waves will significantly reduce the amplitude threshold. In some cases, the electron motion can become stochastic in the field of an MS wave with amplitudes below 1 nT. Regardless, if neither the bounce nor Landau resonance condition is satisfied initially, then the amplitude threshold of stochastic motion shows an increasing trend for lower frequencies and a decreasing trend for higher frequencies, even though the amplitude threshold is always very large(> 5 nT). Our study suggests that electron stochastic motion should also be considered when modeling electron dynamics regulated by intense MS waves in the Earth's magnetosphere. 展开更多

The geometry of joints has a significant influence on the mechanical properties of rocks. To simplify the curved joint shapes in rocks, the joint shape is usually treated as straight lines or planes in most laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. In this study, the computerized tomography (CT) scanning and photogrammetry were employed to obtain the internal and surface joint structures of a limestone sample, respectively. To describe the joint geometry, the edge detection algorithms and a three-dimensional (3D) matrix mapping method were applied to reconstruct CT-based and photogrammetry-based jointed rock models. For comparison tests, the numerical uniaxial compression tests were conducted on an intact rock sample and a sample with a joint simplified to a plane using the parallel computing method. The results indicate that the mechanical characteristics and failure process of jointed rocks are significantly affected by the geometry of joints. The presence of joints reduces the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS),elastic modulus, and released acoustic emission (AE) energy of rocks by 37%–67%,21%–24%,and 52%–90%,respectively.Compared to the simplified joint sample, the proposed photogrammetry-based numerical model makes the most of the limited geometry information of joints. The UCS,accumulative released AE energy, and elastic modulus of the photogrammetry-based sample were found to be very close to those of the CT-based sample. The UCS value of the simplified joint sample (i.e.38.5 MPa) is much lower than that of the CT-based sample (i.e.72.3 MPa).Additionally,the accumulative released AE energy observed in the simplified joint sample is 3.899 times lower than that observed in the CT-based sample.CT scanning provides a reliable means to visualize the joints in rocks, which can be used to verify the reliability of photogrammetry techniques. The application of the photogrammetry-based sample enables detailed analysis for estimating the mechanical properties of jointed rocks. 展开更多

The deformation, failure mechanisms and life are analyzed by three reasonable models. The following five factors have been considered simultaneously: creep property of the particle, creep property of the matrix, the shape of the particle, the volume fraction of the particle and the size (relative size to the particle) of the indentation indenter. For all the cases, the power law respecting to the applied stress can be used to model the steady indentation creep depth rate of the indenter, and the detail expressions have been presented. The computer simulation precision is analyzed by the two-phase model and the three-phase model. Two places of the stress concentration are found in the composites. One is ahead of the indentation indenter, where the high stress state is deduced by the edge of the indenter and will decrease rapidly near to a steady value with the creep time. The other one is at the interface, where the high stress state is deduced by the misfit of material properties between the particles and matrix. It has been found that the creep dissipation energy density other than a stress parameter can be used to be the criterion to model the debonding of the interfaces. With the criterion of the critical creep dissipation energy density, a power law to the applied stress with negative exponent can be used to model the failure life deduced by the debonding of interfaces. The influences of the shape of the particles and the matching of creep properties of particle and matrix can be discussed for the failure. With a crack model, the further growth of interface crack is analyzed, and some important experimental phenomena can be predicted. The failure mechanism which the particle will be punched into matrix has been also discussed. The critical differences between the creep properties of the particles and matrix have been calculated, after a parameter has been defined. In the view of competition of failure mechanisms, the best matching of the creep properties of the two phases and the best shape of the particles are discussed for the composite design. 展开更多

Introduction: This work investigates whether to conduct a medical study from the point of view of the expected net benefit taking into account statistical power, time and cost. The hypothesis of this paper is that the expected net benefit is equal to zero. Methods: Information were obtained from a pilot medical study that investigates the effects of two diagnostic modalities, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computerized axial tomography scanner (CT), on patients with acute stroke. Statistical procedure was applied for planning and contrasting equivalence, non-inferiority and inequality hypotheses of the study for the effectiveness, health benefits and costs. A statistical simulation model was applied to test the hypothesis that conducting the study would or not result in overall net benefits. If the null hypothesis not rejected, no benefits would occurred and therefore the two arms-patterns of diagnostic and treatment are of equal net benefits. If the null hypothesis is rejected, net benefits would occur if patients are diagnosed with the more favourable diagnostic modality. Results: For any hypothesis design, the expected net benefits are in the range of 366 to 1796 per patient at 80% of statistical power if conducting the study. The power depends on the monetary value available for a unit of health improvement. Conclusion: The statistical simulations suggest that diagnosing patients with CT will provide more favourable health outcomes showing statistically significant expected net benefits in comparison with MRI. 展开更多

Damage and threats to hydraulic and submarine structures by underwater explosions(UNDEXs)have raised much attention. The centrifuge model test, compared to prototype test,is a more promising way to examine the problem while reducing cost and satisfying the similitude requirements of both Mach and Froude numbers simultaneously. This study used a systematic approach employing centrifuge model tests and numerical simulations to investigate the effects of UNDEXs on an air-backed steel plate.Nineteen methodical centrifuge tests of UNDEXs were conducted. The shock wave pressure, bubble oscillation pressure, acceleration and the strain of the air-backed steel plate were recorded and compared with numerical studies using the finite element analysis(FEA)commercial software ABAQUS.By implementing empirically derived and physically measured pressures into the numerical models, the effects of the shock wave and bubble oscillation on the steel plate were investigated.Generally, the numerical results were in agreement with the experimental results. These results showed that the peak pressure of an UNDEX has a significant effect on the peak acceleration of the steel plate and that the impulse of the UNDEX pressure governs the peak strain of the steel plate. 展开更多

This paper describes the model test and the virtual simulation respectively for the VLCC class FPSO hookup, as well as addresses their different applications to the mating operation between the FPSO and the soft yoke mooring system (SYMS) in extremely shallow water. The scope of the model test and the virtual simulation covers various installation stages including a series of positioning trials, positioning keeping and temporary mooring to the pre-installed SYMS mooring tower, pendulum mating, and yoke ballasting to storm-safe. The model test is to accurately verify bollard pull capacity to keep the FPSO in position and assess motion responses and mooring loads for the FPSO and installation vessels during various installation stages. The virtual simulation is to provide a virtual-reality environment, thus realistically replicating the hookup operation at the Simulation Test Center (STC) facility and identifying any deficiencies in key installation personnel, execution plan, or operation procedures. The methodologies of the model test and the virtual simulation addressed here can be easily extended to the deepwater applications such as positioning and installation operations of various floating systems. 展开更多

For the further design of the particular gearbox components, the alternating cycles of the respective application mean an often insufficient knowledge of the actual loads occuring in use. Especially for the application within lifting units, such dynamic load cycles are very difficult to pre-estimate. The so-called slack rope test represents the most critical point in the load cycle and provides a special challenge for the gearbox design. Because of this missing expert knowledge, a test bench of such an application is installed and applied to practical movement cycles. Besides the test bench, a multi-body simulation model of the whole system is mapped within the MBS (multi-body simulation) environment SIMPACK. To verify this simulation model, the results are compared with the respective measurements of the test bench. These comparisons show very good agreements. Thus, one of the major advantages of using such simulation tools is the possibility to re-evaluate the internal and external loads during the whole design process. Finally, these simulations serve as a clarification of the load spectrum of the different drivetrain components. Gearbox series or different modifications of the design can now be analyzed prospectively without extensive testing. 展开更多

The law governing the movement of particles in the centrifugal pump channel is complicated; thus, it is difficult to examine the solid-liquid two-phase turbulent flow in the pump. Consequently, the solid-liquid two-phase pump is designed based only on the unary theory. However, the obvious variety of centrifugal-pump internal flow appears because of the existence of solid phase, thus changing pump performance. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the flow characteristics of the solid-liquid two-phase pump. In the current paper, two-phase numerical simulation and centrifugal pump performance tests are carried out using different solid-particle diameters and two-phase mixture concentration conditions. Inner flow features are revealed by comparing the simulated and experimental results. The comparing results indicate that the influence of the solid-phase characteristics on centrifugal-pump performance is small when the flow rate is low, specifically when it is less than 2 m3/h. The maximum efficiency declines, and the best efficiency point tends toward the low flow-rate direction along with increasing solid-particle diameter and volume fraction, leading to reduced pump steady efficient range. The variation tendency of the pump head is basically consistent with that of the efficiency. The efficiency and head values of the two-phase mixture transportation are even larger than those of pure-water transportation under smaller particle diameter and volume fraction conditions at the low-flow-rate region. The change of the particle volume fraction has a greater effect on the pump performance than the change in the particle diameter. The experimental values are totally smaller than the simulated values. This research provides the theoretical foundation for the optimal design of centrifugal pump. 展开更多
