In this study oil palm trunk juice and Lactobacillus rhamnosus TISTR 108 (ATTC 10863) were utilized for lactic acid production. Additional nutrients including peptone, yeast extract and mixed salts were tested. Response surface methodology involving Box Behkhen Design (BBD) was applied to examine the optimal condition. Prediction of optimization was performed using full quadratic regression equation. The predicted maximum lactic acid concentration was obtained at 64.05 g·l-1 within a period of 48 h under an optimal condition of 10 g·l-1 peptone with mixed salts containing 0.4 g·l-1 MgSO4·7H2O, 0.1 g·l-1 MnSO4·4H2O, 3 g·l-1 K2HPO4, 3 g·l-1 KH2PO4 and 3 g·l-1 CH3COONa·3H2O in 250 ml shake flask using CaCO3 as a titrant. Verification of optimization condition was performed in 2 l fermenter using Ca(OH)2 as neutralizing agent. Increase in lactic acid fermentation was achieved at 92.81 g·l-1 at 48 h cultivation. The lactic acid yield and volumetric productivity were 0.94 g·g-1 and 1.91 g l-1·h-1, respectively. This suggests that OPT juice is potentially used as carbon and nutrient sources for lactic acid production.展开更多

The OPT chips were refined in the MDF pilot plant by using four refining pressures (2, 4, 6 and 8 bar) and four different preheating time (100, 200, 300 and 400 seconds). The refined fibres were blended with 10% of urea formaldehyde with a board target density of 720 kg/m3. MDF boards were evaluated based on European Standard EN 622-5:2006 for thickness swelling (TS), internal bonding (IB), modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze the significance of the factors. The results from this study indicated that refining pressure and preheating time are significant factors for all MDF properties. Low refining pressure and preheating time produced higher TS, lower MOR and MOE with poor bonding than those boards prepared from fibres refined at higher refining pressure and longer preheating time. OPT fibre treated with 8 bar produced good swelling resistance but detrimental on mechanical properties of the finish board. 6 bar steam pressure offered the highest value of mechanical properties (MOE, MOR and IB). Boards from intermediate refining condition (6 bar and 300 seconds) were found the better board properties having 14.58%, 0.73 N/mm2, 38 N/mm2 and 3597 N/mm2 for TS, IB, MOR and MOE respectively.展开更多

The Gompertz equation Y=71.296 1exp (-3.874 4exp (-0.006 4t)) was the most optimal equation to simulate the accumulative growth rate of basal trunk disc. This equation could be used to estimate the age of oil-tea camellia trees that grow under similar environmental conditions. The Korf equation Y=576.900 1exp (-4.153 0x -0.314 2 ) was the best equation to describe the relation between the age and growth rate of different secondary trunks. With the adjustment coefficient and average growth of different secondary trunk discs, it is possible to predict the age of ancient oil-tea camellia trees that grow under similar environmental conditions. In addition, taking three or more discs from the same diameter group and calculating their average growth rate could lead to more accurate results. For trees that grow in different areas, environmental conditions should be carefully considered when using the above two equations to predict the age of ancient oil-tea camellia trees.展开更多
