Open clusters are the basic building blocks that serve as a laboratory for the study of young stellar populations in the Milky Way.Variable stars in open clusters provide a unique way to accurately probe the internal structure, temporal and dynamical evolutionary stages of individual stars and the host cluster. The most powerful tool for such studies is time-domain photometric observations. This paper follows the route of our previous work, concentrating on a photometric search for variable stars in NGC 884.The target cluster is the companion of NGC869,forming the well-known double cluster system that is gravitationally bound. From the observation run in 2016 November,a total of 9247 B-band CCD images and 8218Ⅴ-band CCD images were obtained. We detected a total of 15 stars with variability in visual brightness, including five Be stars, three eclipsing binaries, and seven of unknown types. Two new variable stars were discovered in this work.We also compared the variable star content of NGC 884 with its companion NGC 869. 展开更多

From photographic plate data of Shanghai Astronomical Observatory with a time baseline of 87 years, proper motions and membership probabilities of 364 stars in the open cluster NGC 6530 region are reduced. On the basis of membership determination, luminosity function and segregation effect of the cluster are discussed with details. Spatial mass segregation is obviously present in NGC 6530 while there is no clear evidence for a velocity-mass (or velocity-luminosity)dependence. The observed spatial mass segregation for NGC 6530 might be due to a combination of initial conditions and relaxation process. 展开更多

This work presents the charge-coupled device(CCD)photometric survey of the old open cluster NGC 188.Timeseries V-band photometric observations were conducted for ten nights in 2017 January using the Nanshan Onemeter Wide-field Telescope to search for variable stars in the field of the cluster.A total of 25 variable stars, including one new variable star, were detected in the target field.Among the detected variables,16 are cluster member stars, and the others are identified as field stars. The periods, radial velocities, effective temperatures, and classifications of the detected variables are discussed in this work. Most of the stars’effective temperatures are between 4200 and 6600 K,indicating their spectral types are G or K.The newly discovered variable is probably a W UMa system. In this study,a known cluster variable star(V21=V0769 Cep)is classified as an EA-type variable star based on the presence of an 0.5 mag eclipse in its light curve. 展开更多

In this paper we study some van den Bergh open clusters combining photometry and astrometry. A model which analyses the proper motion distribution and the stellar density is applied to find the kinematic parameters and stellar membership in the region of the open clusters vdB92, vdB146 (NGC 7129) and vdB150. The astrometric data are obtained from UCAC4 catalogue. The centre coordinates, the components of mean proper motion, the angular diameter and the astrometric members are reported, taking the following values: for vdB92: α=105.97281°±0.13113°, δ=−11.57814°±0.10575°,?μαcosδ=−3.46±0.19mas/yr,μδ=1.27±0.19mas/yr, 34', 60 members;for vdB146: α=325.78423°±0.15297°, δ=66.13575°±0.02907°, μαcosδ=−2.71±0.25mas/yr, μδ=−3.32±0.25mas/yr, 9', 5 members;and for vdB150: α=332.22519°±0.06074°, δ=73.40232°±0.0.07789°, μαcosδ=3.07±0.90mas/yr, μδ=4.65±0.90mas/yr, 15', 7 members. The incidence of the proper motion errors in the determination of the cluster parameters and of the stellar membership is analysed and it is found that they do not significantly change. We finally compare the astrometric members with the photometric ones given in the literature. 展开更多

This work presents a time-series photometric variability survey of the young open cluster NGC 869.More than 13000 CCD frames in the BV filters were collected on 19 nights between 2014 November 6 and 2014 December 24.In a 20’×20’field centered on the cluster,we detected a total of 28 stars showing photometric variability,12 of which are new discoveries. The classifications and memberships of the variable stars are discussed according to the behaviors and periods of the light curves as well as their positions on the H-R diagram. These results conclude that 22 variable stars are probable members of the cluster while six other stars belong to the field star population. They are categorized as 18 pulsating variable stars(fourβCep,seven SPB,oneβCep/SPB,four Be stars, and twoδSct/γDor candidates),seven eclipsing binaries(five EA and two EB)and three unknown type stars. 展开更多

We present the first CCD photometric observations of open cluster NGC 744, as part of the 50 BiN Open Cluster Survey. The color-magnitude diagrams of this cluster were derived from absolute BV RI photometry on a good photometric night. A brief isochrone fitting gives a distance modulus of(m-M)V= 11.58±0.2 and a reddening of E(B-V) = 0.35±0.05 with an age of log t = 8.30±0.05.By carefully examining the BV time-series data, we discovered four new variable stars in a 20′×20′field around the cluster. We classified them as three eclipsing binary stars and one δ Scuti pulsating star, mainly based on the light-curve shape, the detected periods and the positions on the color-magnitude diagrams. 展开更多

High-precision proper motions and radial velocities of 1046 stars are used to determine member stars using three-dimensional (3D) kinematics for open clus- ter NGC 188 based on the density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) clustering algorithm. By implementing this algorithm, 472 member stars in the cluster are obtained with 3D kinematics. The color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the 472 member stars using 3D kinematics shows a well-defined main sequence and a red giant branch, which indicate that the DBSCAN clustering algorithm is very effective for membership determination. The DBSCAN clustering algorithm can ef- fectively select probable member stars in 3D kinematic space without any assumption about the distribution of the cluster or field stars. Analysis results show that the CMD of member stars is significantly clearer than the one based on 2D kinematics, which al- lows us to better constrain the cluster members and estimate their physical parameters. Using the 472 member stars, the average absolute proper motion and radial velocity are determined to be (PMα, PMδ) = (-2.58 ± 0.22, +0.17 ± 0.18) mas yr-1 and Vr = -42.35 ± 0.05 km s-1, respectively. Our values are in good agreement with values derived by other authors. 展开更多

We report the results of a search for variable stars in the open cluster NGC 2141. Ten variable stars are detected, among which nine are new variable stars and they are classified as three short-period W UMa-type eclipsing binaries, two EA- type eclipsing binaries, one EB-type eclipsing binary, one very short-period RS CVn- type eclipsing binary, one d-type RR Lyrae variable star, and one unknown type of variable star. The membership and physical properties are discussed, based on their light curves, positions in the color magnitude diagrams, spatial locations and periods. A known EB-type eclipsing binary is also identified as a blue straggler candidate in the cluster. Furthermore, we find that all eclipsing contact binaries have prominent asymmetric eclipses and display the O'Connell effect, which increases with a decrease in orbital periods. This suggests that the O'Connell effect is probably related to the evolution of the orbital period in short period eclipsing binary systems. 展开更多

We present metallicities and radial velocities for five old open clusters (NGC 6791, NGC 2420, NGC 2682, NGC 2158, and NGC 7789) using data from the seventh public data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), which includes the directed stellar program SEGUE: Sloan Extension For Galactic Understanding and Exploration. The radial velocities are used to calculate cluster membership probabilities for stars in each cluster region. NGC 6791, NGC 2420, NGC 2682, NGC 2158 and NGC 7789 are found to have mean metallicities [Fe/H]= +0.08 ± 0.09, -0.38± 0.11, -0.08±0.05, -0.41 ±0.13 and -0.19 ± 0.13 dex (s.d.), respectively. The mean radial velocities for NGC 6791, NGC 2420, NGC 2682, NGC 2158 and NGC 7789 are Vr = -45.9 ± 0.2, +76.1 ± 0.2, +35.0 ± 0.2, +26.9 ± 0.2 and -48.2± 0.2 km s^-1(s.e.m.), respectively. We have compared our results with the values from literatures, and found that our metallicity of NGC 6791 is significantly underestimated (by about 0.3 dex) and our radial velocities of the open clusters agree well with the values derived using high-resolution spectroscopy. 展开更多

This paper presents a preliminary test of the k-th nearest neighbor distance (KNND) method for detecting nearby open clusters based on Gaia-DR1. We select 38 386 nearby stars (〈 100 pc) from the Gaia-DR1 catalog, and then use the KNND method to detect overdense regions in three-dimensional space. We find two overdense regions (the Hyades and Coma Berenices (Coma Ber) open clusters), and obtain 57 reliable cluster members. Based on these cluster members, the distances to the Hyades and Coma Ber clusters are determined to be 46.0±0.2 and 83.5±0.3 pc, respectively. Our results demonstrate that the KNND method can be used to detect open clusters based on a large volume of astrometry data. 展开更多

We used the Nanshan 1 m telescope of Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory to investigate variable stars in the region of NGC 1245. We detected 55 variable stars in the field of view, 42 of them are newly discovered: six binaries, 22 pulsating stars, 14 unclassified variables. We discussed the physical properties and classifications of the variable stars through their light curves. The cross-matching with the members catalog of NGC 1245 suggests that 10 variable stars are identified as probable cluster members, which including one EW type binary, eight δ Scuti stars, and an unknown type variable star. Since the difference of the members catalog of the cluster and the limitations of the instrument, there are some huge differences in the variable list of NGC 1245 compared with the previous work. 展开更多

The Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) is one of the payloads on the first Indian multiwavelength satellite ASTROSAT, which is expected to be launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in the year 2015. We have per- formed simulations of UV studies of old open clusters for the UVIT. The colour mag- nitude diagrams (CMDs) and spatial appearances have been created using 10 filters associated with the FUV channel (130-180 nm) and NUV channel (200-300 nm) that are available for observations on the UVIT, for the three old open clusters M67, NGC 188 and NGC 6791. The CMDs are simulated for different filter combinations, and they are used to identify the loci of various evolutionary sequences, white dwarfs, blue stragglers, red giants, subgiants, turn off stars and the main sequence of the clus- ters. The present work helps in identifying a potential area of study in the case of these three old open clusters by considering the availability of filters and the detection limits of the instrument. We also recommend filter combinations, which can be used to detect and study the above mentioned evolutionary stages. The simulations and the results presented here are essential for the optimal use of the UVIT for studies of old open clusters. 展开更多

In this work,we studied the variable stars in the open cluster NGC 1912 based on the photometric observations and Gaia DR2 data.More than 3600 CCD frames in B,V,R filters were reduced, and we obtained the light curves that span about 63 hours.By analyzing these light curves,we detected 24 variable stars, including 16 periodic variable stars, seven eclipsing binaries and one star whose type is unclear.Among these 24 variable stars,11 are newly discovered, which are classified as sixγDoradus stars, oneδScuti star, three detached binaries and one contact binary. We also confirmed 13 previously known variable stars.Based on cluster members identified by Cantat-Gaudin et al.(2018),we inferred cluster memberships for these detected variable stars.Using Gaia DR2 data,we plotted a new color-magnitude diagram for NGC1912,and showed the nature of variable cluster members in kinematical properties and heliocentric distance.Among the 24 variable stars, seven variables are probable cluster members, which show homogeneity in kinematic characters and space position with the established cluster members.Four of the seven variable cluster members are the previously discovered stars, consisting of twoγDor stars and twoδSct stars. The remaining three variable cluster members, which are allγDor stars, are firstly detected in this work. The main physical parameters of these variable cluster members estimated from the color-magnitude diagram are log(age/yr)=8.75,[Fe/H]=-0.1,m-M=10.03 mag,and E(B-V)=0.307. 展开更多

The physical nature of a series of 20 new open clusters is confirmed employing existing data on putative star members, mainly from the second Gaia Data Release(DR2).The clusters were discovered as overdensities of stars by visual inspection of either photographic DSS plates or proper motion plots of random source fields. The reported objects are not present in the most comprehensive or recent catalogs of stellar clusters and associations. For all of them, clumps of comoving stars are revealed in the proper motion space. The parallaxes of the clumped stars are compatible with the real existence of open clusters over narrow ranges of distances.Surface density calculations, free of most noise from non-member sources, allow differentiating a cluster core and an extended cluster corona in some instances.Color-magnitude diagrams generally show a definite main sequence that allows confirmation of the physical existence of the clusters and some of their characteristics. Two of the new clusters seem to form a double system with a common origin.Several of the new clusters challenge the claim of near completeness of the known OC population in the distance range from 1.0 to 1.8 kpc from the Sun(Kharchenko et al.). 展开更多

In order to obtain clean members of the open cluster NGC 6819, the proper motions and radial velocities of 1691 stars are used to construct a three-dimensional (3D) velocity space. Based on the DBSCAN clustering algorithm, 537 3D cluster members are obtained. From the 537 3D cluster members, the average radial velocity and absolute proper motion of the cluster are Vr = +2.30 ±0.04 km s-1 and (PMRA, PMDec) = (-2.5 ±0.5, -4.3 ± 0.5) mas yr-1, respectively. The proper motions, radial velocities, spatial positions and color-magnitude diagram of the 537 3D members indicate that our membership determination is effective. Among the 537 3D cluster members, 15 red clump giants can be easily identified by eye and are used as reliable standard candles for the distance estimate of the cluster. The distance modulus of the cluster is determined to be (m - M)0 -- 11.86 ± 0.05 mag (2355 ±54 pc), which is quite consistent with published values. The uncertainty of our distance mod- ulus is dominated by the intrinsic dispersion in the luminosities of red clump giants (--0.04 mag). 展开更多

We report the results of a time-series CCD photometric survey of variable stars in the field of open cluster NGC 2126. In about a one square degree field covering the cluster, a total of 21 variable candidates are detected during this survey, of which 16 are newly found. The periods, classifications and spectral types of 14 newly discovered variables are discussed, which consist of six eclipsing binary systems, three pulsating variable stars, three long period variables, one RS CVn star, and one W UMa or δ Scuff star. In addition, there are two variable candidates, the properties of which cannot be determined. By a method based on fitting observed spectral energy distributions of stars with theoretical ones, the membership probabilities and the fundamental parameters of this cluster are determined. As a result, five variables are probably members of NGC 2126. The fundamental parameters of this cluster are determined as: metallicity to be 0.008 Z, age log(t) = 8.95, distance modulus (m - M)0 = 10.34 and reddening value E(B - V) = 0.55 mag. 展开更多

COIN-Gaia 13 is a newly discovered open cluster revealed by Gaia DR2 data.It is a nearby open cluster with a distance of about 513 pc.Combined with the five-dimensional astrometric data of Gaia EDR3 with higher accuracy,we use the membership assignment algorithm(pyUPMASK)to determine the membership of COINGaia 13 in a large extended spatial region. The cluster has 478 identified candidate members. After obtaining reliable cluster members,we further study its basic properties and spatial distribution. Our results show that there is an obvious extended structure of the cluster in the X-Y plane. This elongated structure is distributed along the spiral arm,and the whole length is about 270 pc.The cluster age is 250 Myr,the total mass is about 439 M_(⊙) and the tidal radius of the cluster is about 11 pc.Since more than half of member stars(352 stars)are located outside twice the tidal radius,it is suspected that this cluster is undergoing the dynamic dissolution process.Furthermore, the spatial distribution and kinematic analysis indicate that the extended structure in COIN-Gaia 13 is more likely to be caused by differential rotation of the Galaxy. 展开更多
