According to this method, the aluminum pow-der is mixed with a powder foaming agent (TiH_2). Subsequent to mixing, the powderblend is hot compacted to obtain a dense semi--finished product. Upon heating to tem-peratures within the range of the melting point, the foaming agent decomposes to evolvegas and the semi--finished product expands into a porous cellular aluminum. Foamingprocess is the key in this method. Based on experiments, the foaming characteris-tics were mainly analyzed and discussed. In this study, an algorithm, named spherical core stratification algorithm, for three-dimensional modeling of spherical aluminum foam was proposed, and by using this algorithm, a three-dimensional model for sphere aluminum foam with random pores has been successfully constructed. The constructed model not only has a high similarity with the real structure of spherical open cell aluminum foam, but also can match its pore size and thickness by adjusting the size and number of holes in the random pore. In order to verify the feasibility of the modeling method, firstly, the three-dimensional model of the cylindrical spherical aluminum foam with a size of Φ35 mm × 20 mm and pore diameter of 5 mm has been generated by using the new algorithm. Secondly, taking the influence of relative density and shape function on the compressive properties of spherical open cell aluminum foams into consideration, a quasi-static constitutive model suitable for the material has been established based on the Sherwood-Frost classical compression constitutive model, which provides material parameters for quasi-static compression simulation. The comparison results show that the established constitutive equation has a good fit with the experiment, with a fitting correlation coefficient of above 0.99. Different values of deposition voltages and times were considered to vary the amount of deposited Cu. The surface morphology of the coating was observed by SEM and the compressive properties were evaluated by MTS. The results show that the coating is more homogeneous and compact with increasing voltage in a certain range, and beyond which, the coating quality decreases apparently. The reason is dedicated to the discharge rate of Cu2+ and nucleus formed in unit time. The compression results show three experienced stages: elastic deformation stage, collapse deformation stage and densification stage. After the electro-deposition of Cu, the elasticity modulus is increased obviously and the platform stress is also increased. Under the same strain, the stress of the aluminum foam with coating is reinforced comparing with the aluminum foam without coating. Furthermore, the platform area is widened apparently. In addition, Cu-SiC nanocomposite coatings are electrodeposited in alumium foams for further improving the mechanical characterization.展开更多

The experimental results indicate that the deformation of the aluminum foams goes through three stages: elastic deforming, plastic deforming and densification stage, during both the quasi-static and dynamic compressions. The aluminum foams with small average cell size or low porosity have high yield strength. An increase in strain rate can lead to an increase of yield strength. The yield strength of the aluminum foams under the dynamic loading condition is much greater than that under the quasi-static loading condition. Dynamic compressive tests show that a higher strain rate can give rise to a higher energy absorption capacity, which demonstrates that the aluminum foams have remarkable strain rate sensitivity on the loading rate.展开更多

The impact energy of a striker was applied on the fixed aluminum foam having a thickness of 25 mm while increasing its impact by 2 J at each strike from 6 J to 16 J. The results show that the impact energies from 6 J to 12 J could not penetrate aluminum foam. However, the aluminum foam applied with the impact energy of 12 J incurred severe damages on its lower part. Finally, the aluminum foam applied with the impact energy of 14 J was penetrated. The striker having the impact energy of 6 J could penetrate aluminum foam around 10 mm. At this moment, aluminum foam could absorb the impact energy of around 9 J. When the impact energy of 14 J was applied on the aluminum foam, the aluminum foam was penetrated and it absorbed the impact energy of around 17.2 J. It is possible to create the safer structure against impact using the results of this work. The simulation results for the verification of the experimental results imply that the results for all the experiments in this work are reliable. The properties and the mechanism of compressive deformation that occur in closed-cell aluminum foam were measured and discussed. The results show that the cell size of foam with density of 0.37 mg/m^3 is distributed in the range of 0.5 4.0 mm. The cell size of foam with density of 0.33 mg/m^3 is distributed in the range of 0.55.0 mm. The cell wall thickness of both types is 0.10.3 mm. The closed-cell aluminum foam almost belongs to isotropic one, with a variation of ±15% in elastic modulus and yield strength in longitudinal and transverse direction. Under compressive loading, foam materials show inhomogeneous macroscopic deformation. The site of the onset of local plastic deformation depends on the cell structure. The shape of cell is more important than size in determining the yielding susceptibility of the cells. At early stage of deformation, the deformation is localized in narrow bands having width of one cells diameter, and outside the bands the cell still remains the original shape. The cells within bands experience large permanent deformation. The band normals are usually within 20° of the loading axis.展开更多

The quasi-static and dynamic compressive tests were carried out on MTS 810 system and SHPB(split Hopkinson pressure bar) respectively. It is found that the elastic moduli and compressive strengths of the studied aluminum foam are not only dependent on the relative density but also dependent on the cell size of the foam under both quasi-static loading and dynamic loading. The foams studied show a significant strain rate sensitivity, the flow strength can be improved as much as 112%, and the cell size also has a sound influence on the strain rate sensitivity of the foams. The foams of middle cell size exhibit the highest elastic modulus, the highest flow strength and the most significant strain rate sensitivity.展开更多

The band normals are usually within 20° of the loading axis.
文摘This paper presents an infiltration casting technique for manufacturing big size open-cell aluminum foam boards. The principle and key technologies of infiltration casting are also analyzed.Based on the previous practice of the small size aluminum foam production, the die for preparing big size aluminum foam boards is designed and manufactured. The experiments on aluminum boards of 300 mm×300 mm×(20-75)mm,with the pore size ranging from 1.0 to 3.2 mm and average porosity of 60%,have been performed. The experimental results show that a reliable infiltration process depends critically on the pouring temperature of the molten Al-alloy,the preheated temperature of the mould and salt particles and vacuum.Current research explores the possibility of large-scale manufacturing and application of the aluminum foams.

文摘The effects of cell size on the quasi-static and dynamic compressive properties of open cell aluminum foams produced by infiltrating process were studied experimentally. The foams of middle cell size exhibit the highest elastic modulus, the highest flow strength and the most significant strain rate sensitivity.

文摘Al-Si closed-cell aluminum foam bare boards of 1 240 mm×1 100 mm with different densities and thicknesses wereprepared by molten body transitional foaming process. The sound reduction index(R)of Al-Si closed-cell aluminum foam bareboards was investigated experimentally under different frequencies(100-4 000 Hz).It is found that sound reduction index(R)issmall under low frequencies, large under high frequencies and is controlled by different mechanisms. The sound insulation propertybasically conforms with the monolayer board sound insulation theory. The sound reduction index(R)increases with the even growthof thickness and density, but its rising trend is tempered. The single number sound reduction indexes(RW)of specimen with thicknessof 20 cm and density of 0.51 g/cm3are 30.8 dB and 33 dB respectively, which demonstrates good sound insulation property forlightmass materials.
