The viscoelastic behavior is describe...In order to investigate the mechanical response of reflective cracking in asphalt concrete pavement under dynamic vehicle loading, a finite element model is established in ABAQUS. The viscoelastic behavior is described by a prony series which is calculated through nonlinear fitting to the creep test data obtained in the laboratory. Based on the viscoelastic theory, the time-temperature equivalence principle, fracture mechanics and the dynamic finite element method, both the Jintegral and the mix-mode stress intensity factor are utilized as fracture evaluation parameters, and a half-sine dynamic loading is used to simulate the vehicle loading. Finally, the mechanical response of the pavement reflective cracking is analyzed under different vehicle speeds, different environmental conditions and various damping factors. The results indicate that increasing either the vehicle speed or the structure damping factor decreases the maximum values of fracture parameters, while the structure temperature has little effect on the fracture parameters. Due to the fact that the vehicle speed can be enhanced by improving the road traffic conditions, and the pavement damping factor can become greater by modifying the components of materials, the development of reflective cracking can be delayed and the asphalt pavement service life can be effectively extended through both of these ways.展开更多
In order to compare the impact of thickness of different layers on fatigue lives of different semi-rigid asphalt pavement structures, the mechanical results from finite element models in ABAQUS are incorporated with t...In order to compare the impact of thickness of different layers on fatigue lives of different semi-rigid asphalt pavement structures, the mechanical results from finite element models in ABAQUS are incorporated with the fatigue results from fatigue models in FE-SAFE to calculate the mechanical response and fatigue lives of semi-rigid pavement structures under heavy traffic loads. Then the influences on fatigue lives caused by the changes in the thickness of layers in pavement structures are also evaluated. The numerical simulation results show that the aggregated base and the large stone porous mixture (LSPM) base have better anti-cracking performance than the conventional semi-rigid base. The appropriate thickness range for the aggregated layer in the aggregated base is 15 to 18 cm. The thickness of the LSPM layer in the LSPM base is recommended to be less than 15 cm.展开更多

The analytical solution of reflection and transmission coefficients for a semi-infinite crack is obtained. The power reflection and transmission ratios depend on both the frequency and the position of the crack. Numerical results show the conservation of power transport. The objectives of this experiment was to investigate the effects of grid stiffness, tensile strength, coating type, amount of tack coat, overlay thickness, crack width and stiffnesses of asphalt overlay and existing asphalt concrete on propagation of the reflection cracking. Results indicate that the stiffnesses of cracked layer and overlay are the main significant factors that can directly improve the service life of an overlay against the reflection cracking. Generally, glass grid is more effective in reinforced overlay than polyester grid. Effect of crack width of the existing layer is significant when its magnitude increases from 6 to 9 mm.展开更多
Crack dynamic propagation and arrest behaviors have received extensive attention over the years.However,there still remain many questions,e.g.under what conditions will a running crack come to arrest?In this paper,dro...Crack dynamic propagation and arrest behaviors have received extensive attention over the years.However,there still remain many questions,e.g.under what conditions will a running crack come to arrest?In this paper,drop weight impact(DWI)tests were conducted to investigate crack arrest mechanism using single cleavage triangle(SCT)rock specimens.Green sandstone was selected to prepare the SCT specimens.Dynamic stress intensity factors(DSIFs)were calculated by ABAQUS code,and the critical DSIFs were determined by crack propagation speeds and fracture time measured by crack propagation gauges(CPGs).The test results show that the critical DSIF at propagation decreases with crack propagation speed.Numerical simulation for SCT specimens under different loading waves was performed using AUTODYN code.The reflected compressive wave from the incident and transmitted plates can induce crack arrests during propagation,and the number of arrest times increases with the wave length.In order to eliminate the effect of the incident and transmitted plates,models consisting of only one SCT specimen without incident and transmitted plates were established,and the same trapezoid-shaped loading wave was applied to the SCT specimen.The results show that for the SCT specimen with transmitted boundary(analogous to an infinite plate),the trapezoid-shaped loading wave cannot induce crack arrest anymore.The numerical results can well describe the occurrence of crack arrest in the experiments.展开更多
An aim of current study is to analyze the contribution of reflected longitudinal waves to wave-induced fluid flow(WIFF) in the cracked porous solid.Initially,we investigate the time harmonic plane waves in cracked por...An aim of current study is to analyze the contribution of reflected longitudinal waves to wave-induced fluid flow(WIFF) in the cracked porous solid.Initially,we investigate the time harmonic plane waves in cracked porous solid by employing the mathematical model proposed by Zhang et al.(2019).The solution is obtained in form of the Christoffel equations.The solution of the Christoffel equations indicates that there exist four(three dilatational and one shear) waves.These waves are attenuated in nature due to their complex and frequency-dependent velocities.The reflection coefficients are calculated at the sealed pore stress-free surface of cracked porous solid for the incidence of P1 and SV waves.It is found that three longitudinal waves contribute to WIFF and the contribution of these waves to the induced fluid in the cracked porous solid is analyzed using the reflection coefficients of these longitudinal waves.We analytically show that the fluid flow induced by these longitudinal waves is linked directly to their respective reflection coefficients.Finally,a specific numerical example is considered to discuss and to depict the impact of various parameters on the characteristics of propagation like phase velocity/attenuation,reflection coefficients and WIFF of longitudinal waves.展开更多
