With consideration of the modulation frequency of the input lightwave itself, we present a new model to calculate the quantum efficiency of RCE p-i-n photodetectors (PD) by superimposition of multiple reflected lightwaves. For the first time, the optical delay, another important factor limiting the electrical bandwidth of RCE p-i-n PD excluding the transit time of the carriers and RCd response of the photodetector, is analyzed and discussed in detail. The optical delay dominates the bandwidth of RCE p-i-n PD when its active layer is thinner than several 10 nm. These three limiting factors must be considered exactly for design of ultra-high-speed RCE p-i-n PD. 展开更多

This paper comprehensively investigates the properties of self phase modulation based optical delay systems consisting of dispersion compensation fibre and highly nonlinear fibres. It researches into the impacts of power level launched into highly nonlinear fibres, conversion wavelength, dispersion slope, modulation format and optical filter bandwidth on the overall performance of optical delay systems. The results reveal that, if the power launched into highly nonlinear fibres is fixed, the time delay generally varies linearly with the conversion wavelength, but jumps intermittently at some conversion wavelengths. However, the time delay varies semi-periodically with the power launched into highly nonlinear fibres. The dispersion slope of highly nonlinear fibres has significant influence on the time delay, especially for the negative dispersion slope. The time delay differs with modulation formats due to the different combined interaction of nonlinearity and dispersion in fibres. The bandwidth of the optical filters also greatly affects the time delay because it determines the bandwidth of the passed signal in the self phase modulation based time delay systems. The output signal quality of the overall time delay systems depends on the conversion wavelength and input power level. The optimisation of the power level and conversion wavelength to provide the best output signal quality is made at the end of this paper. 展开更多

Tunable hexagonal boron nitride topological optical delay line in the visible region

Tunability,ultracompact design,high group index,low loss,and broad bandwidth are desired properties for integrated optical delay lines(ODLs).However,those properties are challenging to achieve simultaneously in the visible region.This paper proposes a tunable hexagonal boron nitride topological optical delay line(ODL)in the visible region based on valley photonic crystals.The topological edge state from the beard-type boundary allows the achievement of an ultralow group velocity close to zero,which results in a large group index of 629 at 645 nm.Moreover,we demonstrate tuning of the slow-light wavelength and optical delay times with electrically tunable liquid crystals by applying external voltage.The device has an ultracompact size of 5μm×2.7μm with an optical delay distance of 25a(a is the lattice constant)and a delay time of 12 ps.Our design can provide a new possibility for designing ODLs working in the visible region for optical communication and quantum computing systems. 展开更多

Optical delay lines(ODLs) are one of the key enabling components in photonic integrated circuits and systems.They are widely used in time-division multiplexing, optical signal synchronization and buffering, microwav... Optical delay lines(ODLs) are one of the key enabling components in photonic integrated circuits and systems.They are widely used in time-division multiplexing, optical signal synchronization and buffering, microwave signal processing, beam forming and steering, etc. The development of integrated photonics pushes forward the miniaturization of ODLs, offering improved performances in terms of stability, tuning speed, and power consumption. The integrated ODLs can be implemented using various structures, such as single or coupled resonators, gratings, photonic crystals, multi-path switchable structures, and recirculating loop structures.The delay tuning in ODLs is enabled by either changing the group refractive index of the waveguide or changing the length of the optical path. This paper reviews the recent development of integrated ODLs with a focus on their abundant applications and flexible implementations. The challenges and potentials of each type of ODLs are pointed out. 展开更多

Investigation on performance of all optical buffer with large dynamical delay time based on cascaded double loop optical buffers

Optical buffers are critical for optical signal processing in future optical packet-switched networks. In this paper, a theoretical study as well as an experimental demonstration on a new optical buffer with large dynamical delay time is carried out based on cascaded double loop optical buffers (I:)LOBs). It is found that pulse distortion can be restrained by a negative optical control mode when the optical packet is in the loop. Noise analysis indicates that it is feasible to realise a large variable delay range by cascaded DLOBs. These conclusions are validated by the experiment system with 4-stage cascaded DLOBs. Both the theoretical simulations and the experimental results indicate that a large delay range of 1-9999 times the basic delay unit and a fine granularity of 25 ns can be achieved by the cascaded DLOBs. The performance of the cascaded DLOBs is suitable for the all optical networks. 展开更多

We demonstrate a triple-pass scheme for coherent transfer of optical frequency and the delay effect on the fiber phase noise compensation. It is theoretically proved that the delay effect consists of both fiber delay and servo delay. The delay effect confines the servo bandwidth within 1/8 and induces a residual fiber phase noise after noise compensation. For a 25-km-long fiber, the servo bandwidth is found to be around 1 k Hz, and the fiber phase noise is suppressed approaching to the theoretical limitation. The triple-pass scheme enables the simultaneous transfer of optical frequency to multiple remote users. The performance of noise compensator in the triple-pass scheme can achieve a similar level result compared with that in the double-pass scheme. 展开更多

Mechanism of delayed conduction of fellow eyes in patients with optic neuritis

To test the hypothesis that latency delay in the fellow eyes of optic neuritis(ON) patients and to compensate for delayed transmission of visual information, latency change of multi-focal visual evoked potential(mf VEP) traces in fellow eyes of 15 ON patients were analyzed. Patients with low risk(LR) for developing multiple sclerosis(MS) were examined separately from MS patients to isolate effect of cortical plasticity from potential pathological changes in disseminated disease. The small increase in latency in fellow eyes of LR group was statistically not significant. In MS patients, the latency was significantly delayed(P〈0.02). The magnitude of the latency change in the fellow eyes did not correlate with the severity of latency delay in the affected eyes(R^2〈0.02, P=0.3). The differences between ON patients with and without MS, reported here, suggest that the presence of disseminated disease plays critical role in latency delay of the fellow eye. 展开更多

We propose and experimentally validate an optical true time delay beamforming scheme with straightforward integration into hybrid optical/millimeter(mm)-wave access networks. In the proposed approach, the most complex functions, including the beamforming network, are implemented in a central office, reducing the complexity and cost of remote antenna units. Different cores in a multi-core fiber are used to distribute the modulated signals to high-speed photodetectors acting as heterodyne mixers. The mm-wave carrier frequency is fixed to 50 GHz(VBand), thereby imposing a progressive delay between antenna elements of a few picoseconds. That true time delay is achieved with an accuracy lower than 1 ps and low phase noise. 展开更多

A new fi ber optic sensor based on the oxidation of 2,4-dichlorophenol(DCP) catalyzed by iron(II) phthalocyanine(Fe(II)Pc) was developed for the determination of DCP. The optical oxygen sensing fi lm containing fl uorescence indicator Ru(bpy)3Cl2 was used to detect the consumption of oxygen in solution. Moreover, a lock-in amplifier was used to determine the lifetime of the sensor head by detecting its phase delay change. The results reveal that the sensor has a linear detection range of 1.0×10^-6- 9.0×10^-5 mol/L and a response time of 5 min. The sensor also has high selectivity, good repeatability and stability. It can be used effectively to determine DCP concentration in real samples. 展开更多

It also features estimated setup and explicit release (ESXR) signaling protocol. The MDE scheme can minimize the delay at the edge nodes for data packets, and improve the end-to-end latency performance for OBS networks. Time-resolution enhanced multi-path OTD measurement using an adaptive filter based incoherent OFDR

High accuracy and time resolution optical transfer delay(OTD)measurement is highly desired in many multi-path applications,such as optical true-time-delay-based array systems and distributed optical sensors.However,the time resolution is usually limited by the frequency range of the probe signal in frequency-multiplexed OTD measurement techniques.Here,we proposed a time-resolution enhanced OTD measurement method based on incoherent optical frequency domain reflectometry(I-OFDR),where an adaptive filter is designed to suppress the spectral leakage from other paths to break the resolution limitation.A weighted least square(WLS)cost function is first established,and then an iteration approach is used to minimize the cost function.Finally,the appropriate filter parameter is obtained according to the convergence results.In a proof-of-concept experiment,the time-domain response of two optical links with a length difference of 900 ps is successfully estimated by applying a probe signal with a bandwidth of 400 MHz.The time resolution is improved by 2.78times compared to the theoretical resolution limit of the inverse discrete Fourier transform(iDFT)algorithm.In addition,the OTD measurement error is below±0.8 ps.The proposed algorithm provides a novel way to improve the measurement resolution without applying a probe signal with a large bandwidth,avoiding measurement errors induced by the dispersion effect. 展开更多

We provide an overview of our recent work on developing wavelength selective SWG waveguide filters based on Bragg gratings and ring resonators, as well as optical delay lines.
