Most studies of the synthetic aperture radar remote sensing of ocean internal waves are based on the solitary wave solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, and the dissipative term in the KdV equation is not taken into account. However, the dissipative term is very important, both in the synthetic aperture radar images and in ocean models. In this paper, the traveling-wave structure to characterize the ocean internal wave phenomenon is modeled, the results of numerical experiments are advanced, and a theoretical hypothesis of the traveling wave to retrieve the ocean internal wave parameters in the synthetic aperture radar images is introduced. 展开更多

Proposed Wave Momentum Source for Generating the 22-Year Solar Cycle

For the 22-year solar cycle oscillation there is no external time dependent source. A nonlinear oscillation, the solar cycle must be generated internally, and Babcock-Leighton models apply an artificial nonlinear source term that can simulate the observations—which leaves open the question of the actual source mechanism for the solar cycle. Addressing this question, we propose to take guidance from the wave mechanism that generates the 2-year Quasi-biennial Oscillation (QBO) in the Earth atmosphere. Upward propagating gravity waves, eastward and westward, deposit momentum to generate the observed zonal wind oscillation. On the Sun, helioseismology has provided a thorough understanding of the acoustic p-waves, which propagate down into the convective envelope guided by the increasing temperature and related propagation velocity. Near the tachocline with low turbulent viscosity, the waves propagating eastward and westward can produce an axisymmetric 22-year oscillation of the zonal flow velocities that can generate the magnetic solar dynamo. Following the Earth model, waves in opposite directions can generate in the Sun wind and magnetic field oscillations in opposite directions, the proposition of a potential solar cycle mechanism. 展开更多

An oscillating buoy wave power device (OD) is a device extracting wave power by an oscillating buoy. Being excited by waves, the buoy heaves up and down to convert wave energy into electricity by means of a mechanical or hydraulic device. Compared with an Oscillating Water Column (OWC) wave power device, the OD has the same capture width ratio as the OWC does, but much higher secondary conversion efficiency. Moreover, the chamber of the OWC, which is the most expensive and difficult part to be built, is not necessary for the OD, so it is easier to construct an OD. In this paper, a numerical calculation is conducted for an optimal design of the OD firstly, then a model of the device is built and, a model test is carried out in a wave tank. The results show that the total efficiency of the OD is much higher than that of the OWC and that the OD is a promising wave power device. 展开更多

The hydrodynamic behaviour of an oscillating wave surge converter(OWSC) in large motion excited by nonlinear waves is investigated. The mechanism through which the wave energy is absorbed in the nonlinear system is analysed. The mathematical model used is based on the velocity potential theory together with the fully nonlinear boundary conditions on the moving body surface and deforming free surface. The problem is solved by the boundary element method. Numerical results are obtained to show how to adjust the mechanical properties of the OWSC to achieve the best efficiency in a given wave, together with the nonlinear effect of the wave height. Numerical results are also provided to show the behaviour of a given OWSC in waves of different frequencies and different heights. 展开更多

Coastal wave energy resources have enormous exploitation potential due to shorter weather window,closer installation distance and lower maintenance cost.However,impact loads generated by depth variation from offshore to nearshore and wave-current interaction,may lead to a catastrophic damage or complete destruction to wave energy converters(WECs).This objective of this paper is to investigate slamming response of a coastal oscillating wave surge converter(OWSC)entering or leaving water freely.Based on fully nonlinear potential flow theory,a time-domain wave-current-structure interaction model combined with higher-order boundary element method(HOBEM),is developed to analyze the coupled hydrodynamic problem.The variable-depth seabed is considered in the model to illustrate the shallow water effect on impact loads and free surface profiles in coastal zone.A domain decomposition approach is utilized to simulate the overlapping phenomenon generated by a jet falling into water under gravity effect.Through a series of Lagrangian interpolation methods,the meshes on boundaries are rearranged to avoid the mismatch between element size on free surface and body surface.The present model is validated against the existing experimental and numerical results.Simulations are also provided for the effects of wave-current interaction and uneven local seabed on the slamming responses.It is found that the length of the splash jet increases for a following current and decreases for an opposing current,and that the slamming response of the OWSC device is sensitive to the geometric features of the uneven seabed. 展开更多

In this study, using the ECMWF reanalysis data, the possible linkage between the Pacific-North American teleconnection pattern (PNA) and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) during boreal winter (December- February) is investigated. The PNA and the NAO pattern are obtained by performing Rotated Empirical Orthogonal Function (REOF) analysis on an anomalous daily mean 300-hPa geopotential height field. The composite daily NAO indices show that the NAO indices are prone to be negative (positive) when the contemporary PNA indices are extremely positive (negative). The correlation coefficients between the daily PNA and NAO indices also confirm that, indeed, there is a significant anti-correlation between the PNA and NAO indices. The correlation peaks at a lag of 0 days (meaning contemporary correlation), and its value is 0.202. Analyses of a newly defined Rossby wave breaking index and diagnostics of the stream function tendency equation indicate that the anti-correlation between PNA and NAO may be caused by the anomalous Rossby wave breaking events associated with the PNA pattern. 展开更多

However, the 2011 tsunami in Japan was a harsh reminder of the ferocity of the ocean. It is known that tsunamis are nearly undetectable in the open ocean but as the wave approaches the shore its energy is compressed, creating large destructive waves. The question posed here is whether an oscillating wave surge converter (OWSC) could withstand the force of an incoming tsunami. Several tools are used to provide an answer: an analytical 3D model developed within the framework of linear theory, a numerical model based on the non-linear shallow water equations and empirical formulas. In this paper, the basic equations of beam-wave interaction for designing the 220 GHz folded waveguide (FW) backward wave oscillator (BWO) are described. On the whole, these equations are mainly classified into small signal model (SSM), large signal model (LSM), and simplified small signal model (SSSM). Using these linear and nonlinear one-dimensional (1D) models, the oscillation characteristics of the FW BWO of a given configuration of slow wave struc- ture (SWS) can be calculated by numerical iteration algorithm, which is more time efficient than three-dimensional (3D) particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. The SSSM expressed by analytical formulas is innovatively derived for determining the initial values of the FW SWS conveniently. The dispersion characteristics of the FW are obtained by equivalent circuit analysis. The space charge effect, the end reflection effect, the lossy wall effect, and the relativistic effect are all considered in our models to offer more accurate results. The design process of the FW BWO tube with output power of watt scale in a frequency range between 215 GHz and 225 GHz based on these 1D models is demonstrated. The 3D PIC method is adopted to verify the theoretical design results, which shows that they are in good agreement with each other. 展开更多

Firstly, the dispersion curve of the sine waveguide is calculated, then, the oscillation frequency and operating voltage of the device are predicted and the circuit transmission loss is calculated. Finally, the particle-in-cell simulation method is used to forecast its radiation performance. The results show that this novel backward wave oscillator can produce over 1-W continuous wave power output in a frequency range from 210 GHz to 230 GHz. Therefore, it will be considered as a very promising high-power millimeter-wave to terahertz-wave radiation source. 展开更多

Simulations by CHIPIC code show that the inner-feedback-style traveling wave tube oscillator having 100W of power, about 10% of electron efficiency and a tunable band of 73.35-73.91 GHz may be achieved. Compared with Backward Wave Oscillators (BWOs), the new devices have similar ability for tuning, and have much higher electron efficiency, suggesting much more potential as a Terahertz source. 展开更多

A megawatt-level subterahertz surface wave oscillator (SWO) is proposed to obtain high conversion efficiency by using separated overmoded slow wave structures (SWSs). Aiming at the repetitive operation and practical applications, the device driven by electron beam with modest energy and current is theoretically analyzed and verified. Then, the functions of the two SWS sections and the effect of the drift tube are investigated by using a particle-in-cell code to reveal how the proposed device achieves high efficiency. The mode analysis of the beam-wave interaction region in the device is also carded out, and the results indicate that multi-modes participate in the premodulation of the electron beam in the first SWS section, while the TM01 mode surface wave is successfully and dominantly excited and amplified in the second SWS section. Finally, a typical simulation result demonstrates that at a beam energy of 313 keV, beam current of 1.13 kA, and guiding magnetic field of above 3.5 T, a high-power subterahertz wave is obtained with an output power of about 70 MW at frequency 146.3 GHz, corresponding to the conversion efficiency of 20%. Compared with the results of the previous subterahertz overmoded SWOs with integral SWS and similar beam parameters, the efficiency increases almost 50% in the proposed device. 展开更多

The research for the shock oscillation used to adopt empirical or semiempirical methods because the phenomenon is very complex. In this paper a theoretical solution on shock oscillating frequency due to turbulent shear layer fluctuations has been obtained from basic conservation equations. Moreover, we have attained the regularity of the frequency of oscillating shock varying with incoming flow Much numbers M and turning angle . We investigate the evolutions of two prominences (P1, P2) and two bundles of coronal loops (L1, L2), observed with SDO/AIA near the east solar limb on 2012 September 22. It is found that there were large-amplitude oscillations in P1 and L1 but no detectable motions in P2 and L2. These transverse oscillations were triggered by a large-scale coronal wave, originating from a large flare in a remote active region behind the solar limb. By carefully comparing the locations and heights of these oscillating and non-oscillating structures, we conclude that the propagating height of the wave is between 50 Mm and 130 Mm. The wave energy deposited in the oscillating prominence and coronal loops is at least of the order of 10-8 erg. Furthermore, local magnetic field strength and Alfv6n speeds are derived from the oscillating periods and damping time scales, which are extracted from the time series of the oscillations. It is demon- strated that oscillations can be used in not only coronal seismology, but also to reveal the properties of the wave. 展开更多

The propagation of disturbances excited by low-frequency oscillations in the tropics is investigated by applying the theory of wave packet dynamics. For simplicity, a linearized barotropic model is adopted and the zonal circulation is taken as basic current. Suppose that the disturbances or waves are superimposed on jet-like westerly basic cur-rent and excited by the forcing in the tropics. We have (1) only the eastward propagating (m>0, n>0 and σ>0) low-frequency disturbances and the stationary (σ = 0) waves can propagate into the middle and high latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere; the others, such as the westward propagating low-frequency wave (m>0, n<0, σ<0) and the high-frequency waves, are restricted only in the vicinity of source region; (2) a stationary wave (σ = 0) reaches a given latitude even more quickly than some low-frequency ones (σ>0) due to the fact that the group velocity of stationary wave is larger; (3) there is a whole wave train excited by the forcing in the tropics and extended into the middle and high latitudes, if the amplitude of the source is independent on time, especially, the low-frequency wave (σ > 0) is of travelling type propagating along the ray; (4) if the source lasts only for an interval of time, namely, its amplitude also has the character of low-frequency oscillation, the excited wave train is not always a whole one, but is restricted in the vicinity of source region in the beginning, extended from the source region to the middle and high latitudes in its saturated stage, after that it gradually becomes weaker and weaker and is detectable only in some area at high latitude, and eventually disappears. This paper introduces the refrigeration cycle process of the gas wave oscillation tube(GWOT).Aiming at the problem that the strong reverse compression waves generated during the refrigeration process affect the performance,this paper proposes a variable-section GWOT that weakens the reverse compression waves and a variable-section structure designed using a numerical method.Results showed that the variable-section structure could reduce the intensity of the incident shock wave by approximately 7%and the total entropy production in the refrigeration cycle by approximately 8%under the design condition.Moreover,the variable-section structure can effectively weaken the strength of the reverse compression waves and improve the refrigeration efficiency by approximately 4%under the same working conditions.The variable-section structure can also widen the highperformance working range of the GWOT.The experimental results reveal that the high-performance working range can be expanded by more than two times under the design condition.The research can guide the subsequent development of gas wave refrigeration technology and a reference for other wave rotor application technologies. 展开更多

In the present study seismic wave propagation in heterogeneous media is numerically simulated by using the pseudospectral method with the staggered grid RFFT differentiation in order to clarify the cause for the complicated distribution characteristics of strong ground motion in regions with basin structure. The results show that the maximum amplitudes of simulated ground acceleration waveforms are closely related to the basin structure. Interference of seismic waves in the basin strongly affects the distribution of maximum seismic waveforms, which may result in peak disasters during earthquakes. Peak disasters might be away from basin boundaries or earthquake faults. Seismic energy transmitted into the basin from the bedrock can hardly penetrate the bottom of the basin and then travel back into the bedrock region. The seismic energy is absorbed by basin media, and transferred into the kinematical energy of seismic waves with great amplitude in the basin. Seismic waves between basins may result in serious damage to buildings over the basin. This is significant for aseismatic research. Geological surveys in and around urban areas would benefit aseismatic research and mitigation of seismic disasters of a city. Such geological surveys should involve seismic velocity structure in the media above the bedrock besides such subjects as active faults and geological structure. 展开更多

In the measurement of damping material's dynamic mechanical performance(DMP) using flexural resonating cantilever beam method,the specimen's adhesive characteristic influences the test precision and accuracy. Taking its effect into account,the improved measurement equations based on the resonance method are presented. The simulated results show that,for the sake of weakening the adhesive's influence on the measured results,the adhesive should be spreaded as thin as possible when specimen is prepared,the adhesive's density and loss factor should be selected as small as possible also,and its Young's modulus should be selected according to the damping material being measured;the same adhesion condition effects differently on the test results of different damping materials,i.e. the error due to the adhesive is more inconspicuous if the damping layer has bigger thickness,modulus,loss factor and a certain density according to the damping material being measured. These conclusions provide theoretical basis for selecting adhesive,improving adhesion technology,and designing specimen. 展开更多
