Wave packets propagated from t...The propagation of wave packets and its relationship with the subtropical jet was investigated for the period 26 29 January 2008 over southern China using ECMWF Interim re-analysis data. Wave packets propagated from the north to the south side of an upper front with eastward development along the upper front during this period. Due to the eastward development of propagation, the acceleration of geostrophic westerly winds shifted eastward along the front. There were two primary sources of the propagation of wave packets at around 30°N. The first was the temperature inversion layer below 500 hPa, and the second was baroclinic zones located along the polarward flank of the subtropical jet in the middle and upper troposphere. Most wave packets propagated horizontally from the baroclinic zones and then converged on the zero meridional gradients of zonal winds.展开更多
In the paper,we propose a framework to investigate how to effectively perform traffic flow splitting in heterogeneous wireless networks from a queue point.The average packet delay in heterogeneous wireless networks is...In the paper,we propose a framework to investigate how to effectively perform traffic flow splitting in heterogeneous wireless networks from a queue point.The average packet delay in heterogeneous wireless networks is derived in a probabilistic manner.The basic idea can be understood via treating the integrated heterogeneous wireless networks as different coupled and parallel queuing systems.The integrated network performance can approach that of one queue with maximal the multiplexing gain.For the purpose of illustrating the effectively of our proposed model,the Cellular/WLAN interworking is exploited.To minimize the average delay,a heuristic search algorithm is used to get the optimal probability of splitting traffic flow.Further,a Markov process is applied to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme and compare with that of selecting the best network to access in terms of packet mean delay and blocking probability.Numerical results illustrate our proposed framework is effective and the flow splitting transmission can obtain more performance gain in heterogeneous wireless networks.展开更多

Packet delay and throughput are commonly employed as assessment criteri...IEEE 802.11 WLAN cannot guarantee the QoS of applications, thus admission control has been proposed as an essen-tial solution to enhance the QoS. Packet delay and throughput are commonly employed as assessment criterions to determine whether a new connection can be admitted into the WLAN. Considering the real network condition, the analytical model is presented in this paper, which is aimed to evaluate the packet delay and throughput performance of IEEE 802.11 WLAN in nonsaturated conditions, taking into account diverse transmission rates and diverse traffic flows (i.e. flows with different packet sizes and arrival rates) simultaneously. This model is based on Markov chain and the theoretical predictions are verified by simulation in OPNET 14.5. We also analyze the influences of transmission rate diversity and traffic flow diversity on throughput performance. It is observed that, the presence of even one station with lower transmission rate can cause a considerable degradation in throughput performance of all the stations when they have the same packet size and arrival rate. Higher system throughput can be achieved if lower transmission rate stations transmit packets with smaller size or arrival rate.展开更多
