The methanol extract of grains of paradise (GP), the seed of Aframomum melegueta, which is distributed throughout West Africa, was administered during an animal breeding test. The extract suppressed body weight gain and decreased the weight of adipose tissues in breeding mice, with a greater effect on mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) than on those fed a normal diet (ND). Other significant effects of GP intake included increased serum triglyceride (TG) concentration and reduced hepatic total cholesterol (TC) and TG concentrations. GP intake markedly prevented fat accumulation and improved hepatic lipid metabolism in HFD-fed mice. In addition, GP extract at a dosage of 5 mg/kg body weight decreased sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) in brown adipose tissue (BAT), while capsaicin, a major component of chili pepper, activated BAT SNA. This suggested that GP exerts a potential anti-obesity effect by a different mechanism from that of capsaicin. 展开更多

In Milton's Paradise Lost, Satan is conspicuously depicted as the "mighty chief" (I 566) and "the dread commander" (I 589) of the rebel army. True to the Hebrew meaning of his name, Satan poses appropriately as a grand "Adversary" (I 629; II 282) to "wage by force or guile eternal war" (I 121) against God. The poet has deliberately built up a parallel between Satan and Christ the Son, who is the commander-in-chief of the angelic army. With "Almighty arms / Gird on, and Sword upon [his] puissant Thigh" (VI 713-14), the Son certainly makes an impressive figure of warrior-general. Satan's stance as the "idol of majesty divine" is really extraordinary. During the War in Heaven, he does show superhuman courage and strength; his ability to change his bodily form has no doubt increased his potential as a warrior. Furthermore, he commands a highly disciplined army, surpassing by far the best troops in human history. All this seems to indicate Satan as a great hero. Even before God proclaims the Son to be raised "by merit" to the position of"second omnipotence" (III 309), Milton has already made it clear to the reader that Satan, too, is "by merit rais'd / To that bad eminence" (II 5-6). This ambivalent merit of Satan has incurred heated controversy among the critics. The present paper will set out to analyze the encounter between Satan and the Son in Paradise Lost, in an effort to determine the true meaning of heroism. 展开更多

Homology of drama and architecture in the early development stage decides the close relationship between both, drama stage design and architectural structural design always apply different approaches but achieve equally satisfactory results.Stage layout and structural design often use architectural symbols, and application of architectural symbols in drama is a common approach of stage art design. But the designer of Jiuzhai Paradise International Conference and Resort Center-the project won Lu Ban Award did exactly the opposite by taking drama elements such as time, figures, location and plot to the "stage" of architecture, and telling visitors a story between traditional Tibetan,Qiang culture and primitive forest life over one thousand years,he indeed created a unique classic architecture using the concept of drama stage design. 展开更多

Deeply influenced by Christian Humanism, Milton fully shows his free will defense in Paradise Lost. Based on the text of Paradise Lost, this paper mainly analyzes the causes of Milton's free will defense, his pursuit for free will shown in the two falls in the work: Satan's fall and Adam and Eve's fall. This paper also discusses the practical meaning of free will defense in Paradise Lost: it reveals his grief and anger of the failure of England revolution and shows the idea that people don't have the freedom to interfere or destroy other people's free will. 展开更多

"Paradise Garden" concept has given rise to the application of several spiritual and aesthetic meaning that helped raise the efficiency of the therapeutic environment. The hypothesis revolves around the idea that the technological development increased the interest in the functional side rather than the aesthetic side in the current therapeutic buildings. This had a negative effect on the efficiency of the functional environment and thus exceeded the negative impact on the satisfaction and comfort of the building users. This hypothesis has been tested through two types of studies: first, analytical study of four hospitals by analyzing the horizontal projections to measure the effects of the natural lighting and ventilation; second, questionnaires were distributed to both the patients and the staff in the therapeutic buildings to measure the therapeutic environment efficiency and the extent of satisfaction of users of the building. It was concluded that the natural lighting and ventilation drive up healing rate in the therapeutic environment. The correctness of this idea is revealed by the conclusion that the technological advances in the medical field helped to raise the level of functional performance and thus it replaced a large part of the role of the natural lighting and ventilation. 展开更多

"We Are the Furrow of His Brow" is the graffiti altered from "Beware of the Furrow of His Brow" or "The Furrow of His Brow" on the hood of an oven in a separated black town Ruby. Young people of Ruby change the words because they feel regretted contriving to shoot an assumed guilty woman living in the nearby convent. However, whether the woman Consolata and the other four women at the convent are dead remains mysterious. There are some descriptions of magics in Paradise in which the most magical abilities are Connie's "bat vision" and "stepping in". This paper demonstrates the ways that Morrison manifests magic realism in Paradise including multiple narrative timelines, ambiguous writing, reconstituted marginal figures and naturally blended reality. Primarily in thefour ways Morrison presents how she utilizes magic realism genre to depict the changeable world penetrating through the appearance. 展开更多

Korean "picture brides" who migrated to Hawaii a century ago are reborn in stories through literary works produced in 21 st-century Korea and the USA. The literary value of picture bride stories is an important starting point for raising awareness of the reality of Korean migration to the US a century ago and for understanding the status of the 20th-century Korean diaspora beyond national borders and cultural boundaries. This study aimed to investigate the historical background of picture brides in Hawaii in the early 20th century so as to research that the life of Korean picture brides was much harder than those of other Asian picture brides. The stories of picture brides, gleaned from various oral narratives, news articles, poems, plays, and novels, not only represent in great detail the patriarchal and nationalistic discourse prevalent in the period in the US on Korean and Asian picture brides, but also provide important details on these women's daily living, independent efforts to make new lives in Hawaii, and the transboundary hybrid culture that emerged as a result. The comparative-literary approach of the study also captures the value of the transnationalist thread in the literary works under study. 展开更多

Sula is Toni Morrison’s second novel. The fundamental difference between this novel and her other novels lies in which the heroine of this novel,Sula,is a typical rebellious woman.Morrison often borrows traditional mythology modes to tell the stories in her works, and Sula is no exception. To have a better understanding of this novel, this paper explores the heroine Sula’s image by means of myth-archetypal criticism.Through elaborate interpretation and analysis,a conclusion can be drawn that Sula’s rebel image is presented on the basis of the rebel archetype of Satan in Paradise Lost, which can show the charm of Toni Morrison’s narrative style, and also reveals the hardships and courage of black women in the process of self-actualization. 展开更多

Paradise Lost tells the stories of men,God and Devil in three geographical spaces:the Heaven, the Hell and the garden of Eden.By sorting out the traces of“things”in the epic, this study holds that Milton presents the readers with the lives of men,God and Devil in three different material dwellings.Combined with the“animism materialism”proposed by John Milton when he respondes to the philosophical controversy of early modern“spirit and matter”,this study observes and appreciates the daily life of the three material dwellings in Paradise Lost from new materialism criticism. Thus,Heaven,Eden and Hell in the epic are not empty imaginations of the poet, but spaces with secular things that we can recognize.Milton uses secular things and three material dwellings full of things to show his understanding of a real Paradise. 展开更多
