The strength of sandstone decreases significantly with higher water content attributing to softening effects.This scenario can pose a severe threat to the stability of reservoirs of pumped storage power stations devel...The strength of sandstone decreases significantly with higher water content attributing to softening effects.This scenario can pose a severe threat to the stability of reservoirs of pumped storage power stations developed from abandoned mines,especially when subjected to the cyclic loading condition caused by the repeated drainage and storage of water(fatigue damage).Based on this,it is essential to focus on the fatigue failure characteristics.In this study,the mineral composition of the used sandstone of Ruineng coal mine in Shanxi Province,China,was first tested to elucidate the rock softening mechanism after absorbing water.Next,a numerical model for replicating the mechanical behavior of water-bearing sandstone was established using twodimensional particle flow code(PFC2D)with a novel contact model.Then,16 uniaxial cyclic loading simulations with distinct loading parameters related to reservoir conditions(loading frequency,amplitude level,and maximum stress level)and different water contents were conducted.The numerical results show that all these three loading parameters affect the failure characteristics of sandstone,including irreversible strain,damage evolution,strain behavior,and fatigue life.The influence degree of these three parameters on failure behavior increases in the order of maximum stress level,loading frequency,and amplitude level.However,for the samples with different water contents,their failure characteristics are similar under the same loading conditions.Furthermore,the failure mode is almost unaffected by the loading parameters,while the water content plays a significant role and causing the transformation from the tensile splitting with low water content to the shear failure with higher water content.展开更多
A simple constitutive model,called semi-implicit model,for cyclic loading is proposed for steel materials used for structures such as building frames in civil engineering.The constitutive model is implemented in the E...A simple constitutive model,called semi-implicit model,for cyclic loading is proposed for steel materials used for structures such as building frames in civil engineering.The constitutive model is implemented in the E-Simulator,which is a software package for large-scale seismic response analysis.The constitutive relation is defined in an algorithmic manner based on the piecewise linear combined isotropic-kinematic hardening.Different rules are used for the first and subsequent loading states to incorporate characteristics such as yield plateau and Bauschinger effect of rolled mild steel materials.An optimization method is also presented for parameter identification from the results of cyclic and monotonic loading tests.Therefore,the proposed model is readily applicable to practical elastoplastic analysis of building frames.Accuracy of the model is demonstrated in an example of a cantilever subjected to various types of cyclic loading.展开更多
Triaxial cyclic loading tests have been performed to assess the influence of plastic deformation on inelastic deformational properties of anisotropic argillite with bedding planes which is regarded as a kind of transv...Triaxial cyclic loading tests have been performed to assess the influence of plastic deformation on inelastic deformational properties of anisotropic argillite with bedding planes which is regarded as a kind of transversely isotropic media.Considering argillite's anisotropy and inelastic deformational properties,theoretical formulae for calculating oriented elastic parameters were deduced by the unloading curves,which can be better fitted for the description of its elasticity than loading curves.Test results indicate that with the growth of accumulated plastic,strain,the apparent elastic modulus of argillite decreases in a form of exponential decay function,whereas the apparent Poisson ratio increase in a form of power equation.A ratio of unloading recoverable strain to the total strain increment occurred during a loading cycle is defined to illustrate the characteristic relations between anisotropic coupled elasto-plastic deformation and plastic strain.It is significant to observe that high stress level and plastic history have an inhibiting effect on argillite anisotropy.展开更多
