Objectives:This study aimed to identify facilitators and barriers to parent-child communication in pediatric palliative care, providing insights for medical professionals developing targeted interventions to enhance parent-child communication and improve its effectiveness. Methods:Whittemore and Knafl’s integrative review method was employed to guide a systematic search for literature in six databases(Medline,Embase,CINAHL Complete,PsycINFO,Web of Science, and Cochrane Library).Peer-reviewer articles published in the English language from inception to December 2023.All of the identified studies were screened, extracted, and analyzed independently by two researchers.Results:Twenty-four articles were included.Thefindings of the relevant studies were analyzed using thematic analysis.Four themes were identified as facilitators:legacy-making,resilience training programs, guidance from the healthcare team, and positive communication.Seven themes were identified as barriers:denial, being unprepared and evasive, mutual protection, being overwhelmed by painful emotions and overloaded with information, incorrect views of medical professionals and parents, negative communication, and cultural context. Conclusions:Parents and professionals should avoid myths about protecting the child and encourage open communication that respects the child’s wishes. The specialized pediatric palliative care team should carefully monitor parent-child communication, determine if any obstacles exist, and design more interventions to enhance it. 展开更多

Chinese core values are very different from those of people in English speaking countries, and this makes communication styles very different. When Chinese communicate with people from other cultures, cultural awareness sometimes helps make the communication easier and more effective. When people are in a bi-cultural or even multi-cultural situation, they need to be aware of the cultural differences. On the other hand, for various reasons, cultural barriers may arise. This can occur when the people concerned speak entirely different languages or hold entirely different values and communication styles. This essay examines how native Chinese speakers communicate with or without words and how the effectiveness of what people say can be helped or hindered by the various messages their language and bodies send. Only when communicators are aware of their own communicative styles and those of others can they avoid communication conflicts. Observing and respecting other people's communication styles during the adjustment of one's own communication behaviors should be an on-going task in the intercultural communication. 展开更多

Objective To analyze the status of parent-child communication on sexual matters and its relationship to the sexual behaviors of adolescents. Methods The data were obtained from a study which was conducted in Changchun city of China in 2001, Unmarried adolescents aged 15-19 years old(322 males and 360females) were selected for this analysis. Results Ten percent of adolescents reported having experience of sexual intercourse (16% of male and 5% of female). The percentages of adolescents communicating with peers, mothers and fathers were 35%, 30% and 17%, respectively, Males were more likely to talk about sexual issues with peer, while females were more likely to talk with mothers. Significant difference was also noted between the ratio of communication on sexual matters and having a girl/boyfriend with peers and with parents, There was a statistically significant relationship between sexual experience and communication with fathers among male adolescents', Despite the fact that parents are the most closest care providers, adolescents obtained most of the sex information from "reading materials" and from "teachers", but not from their parents. There was an age difference in the main source of obtaining sexual information. Younger adolescents obtained sexual information mainly from teachers while older adolescents mainly from reading materials. Conclusion In addition to schools and reading materials, parents should serve as an important source of information on sexual education as well. 展开更多

The literature on disasters mainly focuses on natural disasters and looks at their coverage by the media. The paper argues that armed conflicts are also disasters and that Western relief agencies intervening in natural disasters and conflict are also proactive communicators. Taking a different approach from much of the available research, it explores agencies' communication work in these two types of crises and analyses the differences, challenges and dilemmas that they face in communicating their humanitarianism. It outlines the distinguished inherent characteristics of natural disasters and conflicts, and examines their impact on the understanding of the crises, the perception of affected populations, and the implementation of agencies' actions. It also investigates how, in turn, all these features influence agencies' communication practices that in natural disasters emergencies and conflict-related crises perform a different role and show different parameters. In this sense, the paper distinguishes between "humanitarian communication" to refer to the former, and "humanitarian advocacy" to refer to the latter. The paper briefly explores the operational challenges engendered by the contested interpretations of humanitarian advocacy, shows that the use of the parameters of humanitarian communication in conflict-related crises to overcome these problems caused additional concern, and presents two forms of humanitarian advocacy engendering less challenges and dilemmas. 展开更多

Cultural differences are permeating in any form of language, including some idioms related with animals.Cross-cultur al communication, which is the ultimate goal of the foreign language studying, has been more and more popular in the life of the people from different countries, yet people do so with a little or no awareness of cultural differences.Though people may feel comfortable with standard literary speech, they will probably find themselves in hot water when confronted with idiomatic ex pressions.Idiomatic expressions are a mirror of a distinct cultural connotation is of vital importance. The thesis confines the idiomatic expression only to the animals, for most of the animals are relatively familiar to human be ings and the idiomatic expressions are rich in both Chinese and English. These idiomatic expressions reflect cultural differences more than cultural similarities for each of them has its own origins and shows its own national coloring. The cultural differences can be mainly divided into three categories:cultural conflict, cultural adaptation, and cultural vacancy.Only by acquainting with and awareness of these cultural differences, can people use such idiomatic expressions appropriately and understand them correctly. As a matter of fact, culture and language are interdependent. The awareness of cultural backgrounds is essential for cross-cul tural communication.I hope that every learner will realize the great importance of cultural awareness, and every learner's good intention will receive pleasing responses. 展开更多

Marx and Engels foresaw the approach of globalization and world history, and addressed the issue of cultural conflicts in a globalized era quite a long time ago. From the perspective of Marxist philosophy of culture, globalization, as the integration, interconnection and interdependence of human societies, will exert a twofold impact on culture. Contradictions between globalism and nationalism, idealism and utilitarianism, elitism and populism lie at the heart of the conflict between globalization and localization. It is the right strategy and stance in a globalized era to give full consideration to the role of cultural communication and understanding. 展开更多

Background:Non-pharmaceutical interventions(NPIs)are a crucial suite of measures to prevent and control infectious disease outbreaks.Despite being particularly important for crisis-affected populations and those living in informal settlements, who typically reside in overcrowded and resource limited settings with inadequate access to healthcare, guidance on NPI implementation rarely takes the specific needs of such populations into account. We therefore conducted a systematic scoping review of the published evidence to describe the landscape of research and identify evidence gaps concerning the acceptability, feasibility, and effectiveness of NPIs among crisis-affected populations and informal settlements. Methods:We systematically reviewed peer-reviewed articles published between 1970 and 2020 to collate available evidence on the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of NPIs in crisis-affected populations and informal settlements. We performed quality assessments of each study using a standardised questionnaire. We analysed the data to produce descriptive summaries according to a number of categories:date of publication;geographical region of intervention;typology of crisis, shelter, modes of transmission,NPI,research design;study design;and study quality. Results:Our review included 158 studies published in 85 peer-reviewed articles. Most research used low quality study designs. The acceptability, feasibility, and effectiveness of NPIs was highly context dependent. In general, simple and cost-effective interventions such as community-level environmental cleaning and provision of water, sanitation and hygiene services, and distribution of items for personal protection such as insecticide-treated nets, were both highly feasible and acceptable.Logistical, financial, and human resource constraints affected both the implementation and sustainability of measures.Community engagement emerged as a strong factor contributing to the effectiveness of NPIs.Conversely, measures that involve potential restriction on personal liberty such as case isolation and patient care and burial restrictions were found to be less acceptable, despite apparent effectiveness. Conclusions:Overall, the evidence base was variable, with substantial knowledge gaps which varied between settings and pathogens.Based on the current landscape, robust evidence-based guidance is not possible, and a research agenda is urgently required that focusses on these specific vulnerable populations.Although implementation of NPIs presents unique practical challenges in these settings,it is critical that such an agenda is put in place, and that the lessons learned from historical and present experiences are documented to build a firm evidence base. 展开更多

Female mate choice based on pheromone content may inhibit reproductive isolation between distinct populations of Iberian wall lizards 被引量:1

The Iberian wall lizard Podarcis hispanica forms part of a species complex with several morphologically and geneti- cally distinct types and populations, which may or may not be reproductively isolated. We analyzed whether female mate choice based on males' chemical signals may contribute to a current pre-mating reproductive isolation between two distinct populations of P. hispanica from central Spain. We experimentally examined whether females choose to establish territories on areas scent-marked by males of their own population, versus areas marked by males of the other population. Results showed that fe- males did not prefer scent-marks of males from their own population. In contrast, females seemed to attend mostly to among-individual variation in males' pheromones that did not differ between populations. Finally, to test for strong premating re- productive isolation, we staged intersexual encounters between males and females. The population of origin of males and females did not affect the probability nor the duration of copulations. We suggest that the different environmental conditions in each population might be selecting for different morphologies and different chemical signals of males that maximize efficiency of communication in each environment. However, females in both populations based mate choice on a similar condition-dependent signal of males. Thus, male signals and female mate choice criteria could be precluding premating reproductive isolation between these phenotypically "distinct" populations [Current Zoology 59 (2): 210-220, 2013]. 展开更多
