To help learners become more effective readers, it is crucial to develop relevant reading strategies in the light of their needs. This essay is intended to exploit how to help learners improve their second or foreign language reading strategies on the basis of a general understanding of the relevant literature. Holding the belief that the strategies chosen for the learners to be developed in the classroom should suit their needs, this essay mainly focuses on developing the learners’ top-down reading strategies such as predicting topics, which seems particularly relevant to the group of learners that I am familiar with.
