The Faculty of Lifelong Learning at South East Technological University’s Carlow campus is one of the largest providers of part-time,adult learning in the Irish HE sector.Therefore,the perspectives of our part-time l...The Faculty of Lifelong Learning at South East Technological University’s Carlow campus is one of the largest providers of part-time,adult learning in the Irish HE sector.Therefore,the perspectives of our part-time learners offer us valuable insights into adult learner experiences in the Irish HE sector.The outbreak of Covid 19 saw us pivot our provision to an emergency remote teaching(ERT)model in the first wave of the epidemic.The faculty undertook an extensive study of its learners in 2021 to examine the impacts of ERT on learners,and this article takes a qualitative approach to the findings of this study,looking specifically at learners’comments about success,and the barriers to success,which ERT posed.Our study provided an opportunity to learn about our learners’conceptions of student identity,and how they interpret success as part-time learners.展开更多
Background Functional mapping, despite its proven efficiency, suffers from a “chicken or egg” scenario, in that, poor spatial features lead to inadequate spectral alignment and vice versa during training, often resu...Background Functional mapping, despite its proven efficiency, suffers from a “chicken or egg” scenario, in that, poor spatial features lead to inadequate spectral alignment and vice versa during training, often resulting in slow convergence, high computational costs, and learning failures, particularly when small datasets are used. Methods A novel method is presented for dense-shape correspondence, whereby the spatial information transformed by neural networks is combined with the projections onto spectral maps to overcome the “chicken or egg” challenge by selectively sampling only points with high confidence in their alignment. These points then contribute to the alignment and spectral loss terms, boosting training, and accelerating convergence by a factor of five. To ensure full unsupervised learning, the Gromov–Hausdorff distance metric was used to select the points with the maximal alignment score displaying most confidence. Results The effectiveness of the proposed approach was demonstrated on several benchmark datasets, whereby results were reported as superior to those of spectral and spatial-based methods. Conclusions The proposed method provides a promising new approach to dense-shape correspondence, addressing the key challenges in the field and offering significant advantages over the current methods, including faster convergence, improved accuracy, and reduced computational costs.展开更多
Although data-independent acquisition (DIA) shows powerful potential in achieving comprehensive peptide information acquisition, the difficulty in determining the precursor m/z and distinguishing fragment ions has pos...Although data-independent acquisition (DIA) shows powerful potential in achieving comprehensive peptide information acquisition, the difficulty in determining the precursor m/z and distinguishing fragment ions has posed challenges in DIA data analysis. To address this challenge, a common approach is to recover the correspondence between precursor ions and fragment ions, followed by peptide identification using traditional data-dependent acquisition (DDA) database searching. In this study, we propose a cosine similarity-based deconvolution method that rapidly establishes the correspondence between chromatographic profiles of precursor ions and fragment ions through matrix calculations. Experimental results demonstrate that our method, referred to as CosDIA, yields a peptide identification count close to that of DIA-umpire. However, compared to DIA-umpire, we can establish the correspondence between original MS/MS spectra and pseudo-MS/MS spectra. Furthermore, compared to the CorrDIA method, our approach achieves higher efficiency in terms of time, reducing the time cost of the analysis process. These results highlight the potential advantages of the CosDIA method in DIA data analysis, providing a powerful tool and method for large-scale proteomics research.展开更多
The future aeronautical network will be based on IPv6 and the services over the aeronautical network will be classified into 3 domains: Air Traffic Services (ATS), Airline Operational Services (AOS) and Passenger Info...The future aeronautical network will be based on IPv6 and the services over the aeronautical network will be classified into 3 domains: Air Traffic Services (ATS), Airline Operational Services (AOS) and Passenger Information and Entertainment Services (PIES), among which the ATS and AOS domains are important for aircraft safety and airline business operation. Some schemes have been proposed to provide IP mobility support for aeronautical network, and Network Mobility (NEMO) scheme is the most promising one. However, using NEMO technology will lead to sub-optimal routing, so route optimization technology is highly desired for NEMO. A route optimization scheme is proposed for the ATS and AOS domains, which introduces the Correspondent Routers to realize the optimal routing and employs an improved procedure to reduce the handoff delay. The route optimization for the PIES domain is also discussed to provide better performance for some special scenarios.展开更多

We propose an elementary research method for corresponding prime number, proved that the conjecture of twin prime numbers and obtain the corresponding prime distribution equation. According to the distribution rate of corresponding prime numbers, the distribution pattern of twin prime numbers was proved the distribution rate theorem. This is the distribution rate of prime numbers corresponding to composite numbers, which approaches the distribution rate of prime numbers corresponding to integers. Based on the corresponding prime distribution equation, obtain the twin prime inequality function. Then, the formula for calculating twin prime numbers was discussed. There is also the Hardy Littlewood conjecture. This provides a practical and feasible approach for studying the distribution of twin prime numbers.展开更多
The purpose of this study was to test and refine a model of part-time nurse faculty intent to remain employed in the academic organization. Cross-sectional survey methods were used. A total of 282 part-time nurse facu...The purpose of this study was to test and refine a model of part-time nurse faculty intent to remain employed in the academic organization. Cross-sectional survey methods were used. A total of 282 part-time nurse faculty working in colleges or universities in Ontario, Canada were invited to participate. Survey instruments and items measured demographic, workplace, nurse responses to the workplace, and external variables. Correlation, multiple regression, and mediation analyses were conducted using data from 119 participants (47.6% response rate). Of the 19 variables hypothesized to affect intent to remain employed in the academic organization, seven influenced intent to remain. The resulting model indicated that the older the part-time nurse faculty member, the lower the level of intent to remain and the more years worked in the organization, the higher the level of intent to remain. The more opportunities perceived to exist outside of the employing organization, the higher the level of intent to remain. Additionally, the more satisfied part-time nurse faculty were with their job overall, the higher their level of intent to remain. In the workplace, the more support from the leader, the more formal or informal recognition received, and the more fair work procedures were perceived to be, the higher levels of part-time nurse faculty intent to remain employed in the academic organization, mediated by job satisfaction. Although age, organizational tenure, and external career opportunities are non-modifiable variables, deans and directors can encourage part-time nurse faculty to remain employed in their academic job by focusing on enhancing overall job satisfaction. Effective strategies may include formal or informal acknowledgement of good performance, consistent verbal and behavioural support, and implementation of procedural practices, such as performance evaluations and pay raises in a fair manner.展开更多

As a bildungsroman, the novel honestly depicts the real life in reservation as well as protagonist Arnold's personal development in misfortune. The novel addresses various themes. Through close reading of the novel and with the help of some theories from postcolonial criticism, the present paper tries to analyze the bleak reality of reservation life and protagonist Arnold's struggle for social success, thus interpreting the themes of othering, alienation, unhomeliness, double consciousness, and hope presented in the novel展开更多
Strengthening the team construction of part-time teachers is required by the transformation and development of the universities,the realization of their goals of being developed into an application-oriented universiti...Strengthening the team construction of part-time teachers is required by the transformation and development of the universities,the realization of their goals of being developed into an application-oriented universities and their talent cultivation and long-term development.The existing problem regarding the part-time teachers in current application-oriented universities are the low proportion of part-time teachers,a shortage of high level parttime teachers,the absence of relevant laws and regulations,a lack of systematic policies or financial support for part-time teachers as well as the unsound management mechanism with insufficient scientific and reasonable employment scheme for part-time teachers.To strengthen the team construction of the part-time teachers in application-oriented universities,firstly we should improve the existing laws,regulations and policies and broaden the financial support channels.Secondly,we should develop the recruitment channels for part-time teachers and pay attention to introducing high-tech and highly-skilled talents.Thirdly,we should improve the management over part-time teachers and promote their value.Fourthly,it should adopt a people-oriented management concept and establish an effective evaluation and incentive mechanism for part-time teachers.展开更多
