Furtherance and Shaping:On the Media-Making of Hankow in the“Foreign Newspaper Era”(1866-1900)

“The Era of Foreign Newspapers”refers to the period from the emergence of the first modern newspaper in Hankow in 1866 to 1900 when Wuhan’s newspaper industry was dominated by foreign newspapers.The well-known foreign newspapers in Wuhan during this period mainly included Hankow Times,The New Edition of Tan Dao,and Han Bao.The subjective purpose of foreigners’early endeavors of running newspapers in Wuhan was mainly to use newspapers to convey business information,spread religion,or influence public opinion in order to safeguard their own interests in China.However,foreign newspapers in this period played a constructive role in the development of Wuhan’s local society:It gave birth to the emergence and development of the first private and official newspapers in Wuhan and shaped the local social,cultural,and political changes in Wuhan in the late Qing Dynasty.Sorting out and explaining the constructive influence of Hankow’s foreign newspaper in this period has certain significance for restoring the social and political landscape of Wuhan at that time and better understanding the context of historical development.

Topic Models to Analyze Disaster-Related Newspaper Articles: Focusing on COVID-19

Major media outlets have run many articles on the COVID-19 pandemic.Since the public suffers cognitive and emotional effects related to COVID-19 from such reports,we analyzed and reviewed the topics of news reports.We searched newspaper articles with the term‘COVID-19’term in four Korean daily newspapers from January 20,2020,when thefirst patient in Korea was found,to June 15,2020.Topic modeling analysis was conducted through text mining using R.Five themes were found:“Changes in people’s everyday life,”“Socio-economic shock,”“Trends in infection,”“Role of the government and business,”and“Increased psychological anxiety,”which all showed sharp increases in articles from mid-February to early March and then decreased.Despite the increased psychological anxiety people suffered from the COVID-19 pandemic,this topic showed the fewest articles.“Changes in people’s everyday life”showed the most,focusing attention on stimulating lifestyle articles of general interest.Since the COVID-19 pandemic can lead to mental health problems due to severe changes and isolation in everyday life,a comprehensive response to the news focusing on the impact on the mental health of the population around the world should be made.

English newspapers and magazines and the teaching of College English

Reading English newspapers and magazines is an effective way to help the students get the latest information worldwide and improve English levels. The present article first analyzes the features of the English newspapers and magazines and then proposes making good use of them through such classroom activities as discussing the hot issue and role-playing to provide more authentic situations in which the students can have chances to practice four English skills, achieving the ideal teaching result.

The System of Reference and Lexical Cohesion in Newspaper-An Example of Analyzing "Beijing and Shanghai in Race to Attract Top Foreign Talents"

Discourse analysis is gaining its prominence in teaching reading. The paper presents an example of analyzing the system of reference and lexical cohesion of a news report. It demonstrates how to involve discourse analysis into the teaching of newspaper reading in order to make students get a clear framework of reference and lexical cohesion in a functional-grammar-conscious manner.

Analysis of Ambiguity in Newspaper Headlines from a Cognitive Perspective

Ambiguity in newspaper headlines have been studied by many people, which mostly focuses upon the traditional linguistics perspective: lexical, grammatical and syntactical. In this paper, the author intends to study the ambiguity in newspaper headlines from the cognitive perspective in order to find how people perceive the ambiguous headlines. To support the analysis, many examples of ambiguous headlines are collected to investigate into way people perceive them. Finally, the author concluded that in the cognitive perspective, people are prone to accept one of the two or more interpretations about the ambiguous headlines according to the following factors: their back ground knowledge, the common sense, the social-cultural environment as well as their personal altitudes, which are drawn upon from the image schema theory.

On the Hong Kong Newspaper's Role in the Democratic Revolution

Since the Cession of Hong Kong for the British since the news of speech terms is strictly limited, long-term Hong Kong residents can not participate in local politics. But to allow discussion of political affairs in China outside Hong Kong. An Automatic Method to Identify Citations to Journals in News Stories: A Case Study of UK Newspapers Citing Web of Science Journals

Purpose: Communicating scientific results to the public is essential to inspire future researchers and ensure that discoveries are exploited. News stories about research are a key communication pathway for this and have been manually monitored to assess the extent of press coverage of scholarship.Design/methodology/Approach: To make larger scale studies practical, this paper introduces an automatic method to extract citations from newspaper stories to large sets of academic journals. Curated ProQuest queries were used to search for citations to 9,639 Science and3,412 Social Science Web of Science(WoS) journals from eight UK daily newspapers during2006–2015. False matches were automatically filtered out by a new program, with 94% of the remaining stories meaningfully citing research.Findings: Most Science(95%) and Social Science(94%) journals were never cited by these newspapers. Half of the cited Science journals covered medical or health-related topics,whereas 43% of the Social Sciences journals were related to psychiatry or psychology. From the citing news stories, 60% described research extensively and 53% used multiple sources,but few commented on research quality.Research Limitations: The method has only been tested in English and from the ProQuest Newspapers database.Practical implications: Others can use the new method to systematically harvest press coverage of research.Originality/value: An automatic method was introduced and tested to extract citations from newspaper stories to large sets of academic journals.

Implications of NIE Project to Development of Newspapers about Agriculture,Countryside and Farmers

Through analyzing current situations of newspapers about agriculture,countryside and farmers and problems impairing development of these newspapers,this paper presents constructive recommendations for combination with NIE project at operational level.In China,NIE project should not copy foreign experience,but should proceed from rural realities,expend its intension and enrich its extension,and extend coverage of newspaper to all levels in rural areas.In addition,it is recommended to explore new approaches and find a new development road of newspapers about agriculture,countryside and farmers through transforming the publishing mode.

Suicide in Nigeria:observations from the content analysis of newspapers

Background Suicide is a global public health problem and Nigeria is one of the epicentres of suicide in the world.However,there is a dearth of research exploring the epidemiological aspects of suicide in Nigeria.Aim To examine the demographic information and precipitating events for suicides in Nigeria by analysing the contents of newspaper reports of suicide.Methods We searched,collected,and analysed published news reports about suicide from 10 English newspapers in Nigeria.A total of 350 suicide reports were assessed between January 2010 and December 2019 after screening and sorting.Results The mean(SD)age of the reported cases was 36.33(15.48)years.Majority of the reported cases were male(80.6%),married(51.8%),students(33.6%),living in a semi-urban area(40.3%)and among the age group of 25-34(25.3%).Hanging(48.6%)and poisoning(32.2%)were the most commonly reported methods of suicide.Financial constraints and marital conflicts were most commonly assumed precipitating factors.Conclusion This study suggests that being male,married,or living in semi-urban areas are associated with suicide in Nigeria.Further community-based studies are warranted to generalise the findings and adopt appropriate preventive strategies.

Recognition of newspaper printed in Gurumukhi script

In this work,a system for recognition of newspaper printed in Gurumukhi script is presented.Four feature extraction techniques,namely,zoning features,diagonal features,parabola curve fitting based features,and power curve fitting based features are considered for extracting the statistical properties of the characters printed in the newspaper.Different combinations of these features are also applied to improve the recognition accuracy.For recognition,four classification techniques,namely,k-NN,linear-SVM,decision tree,and random forest are used.A database for the experiments is collected from three major Gurumukhi script newspapers which are Ajit,Jagbani and Punjabi Tribune.Using 5-fold cross validation and random forest classifier,a recognition accuracy of 96.19%with a combination of zoning features,diagonal features and parabola curve fitting based features has been reported.A recognition accuracy of 95.21%with a partitioning strategy of data set(70%data as training data and remaining 30%data as testing data)has been achieved.

Impact of Gaokao on education at the societal level:Evidence from newspaper data

过去三十年间,考试影响已经被认为是考试效度验证中后果方面的重要证据,在语言测评领域引起了越来越多的关注。此方面现有研究多关注于测试对课堂内教学的影响(通常称之为"反拨效应"),而对测试在课堂之外的个体、政策及实践等社会层面的影响研究甚少。为此,本文研究了2011年至2017年间两种国家级报纸的数据,以此分析高考对于中国教育社会层面的影响。文献分析的结果显示了高考在诸多方面的巨大影响,包括考试内容、施考、利益相关方承受的压力、学校教学实践、教育政策等方面,特别是举国瞩目的现行高考改革。我们的分析显示考试内容设计需更多关注农村考生群体,考试需系统地提供更具包容性的施考程序,以及高考改革的成功需有课程及教法的配套改革支持。

Newspaper Visibility of Members of Parliament in Kenya

This research investigates variables that predicted news coverage of 212 members of parliament （MPs） in Kenya by four national newspapers in 2009. The 10 variables examined are： ordinary MP, cabinet minister, powerful ministry, parliamentary committee chairmanship, seniority, big tribe identity, major party affiliation, presidential ambition, commenting on contentious issues, and criticizing government. Findings indicate that commenting on contentious issues, criticizing government, cabinet minister, ordinary MP, powerful ministry, and seniority significantly predicted visibility of the parliamentarians in newspaper news. However, a multiple regression analysis shows that the strongest predictors are commenting on contentious issues, cabinet minister, criticizing government, and big tribe identity. While commenting on controversial issues was the strongest predictor, major party identification and committee leadership were found not to predict MPs＇ visibility.

Opportunities and Threats for Chinese Newspaper Media in the Omnimedia Era

Chinese Newspaper Media in the Omnimedia Era are faced with opportunities and threats brought by media ecological reconstruction.However.Newspaper media still have the advantages of circulation and readership.Through combing the basic situation and the main advantage of newspaper media development,this paper summarizes communication practice and future development of newspaper media.It is found that newspaper media should build a series of self-controlled new media platforms and integrate superiorities.What’s more,based on newspaper-oriented,newspaper media should strengthen the core feature of media and maintain the influence and communication value.

The Historical Value of Newspaper Directory of China

As a prominent journalist and entrepreneur living in Shanghai from 1911 to 1937,the“China Hand”Carl Crow(1884-1945)wrote a lot of works on Chinese newspapers,business,religion and culture.His advertising agency Carl Crow,Inc.published four editions of Newspaper Directory of China in the year of 1921,1931,1932 and 1935 respectively,and the most popular was the edition of 1935,which had a positive impact on the commercialization and development of the China’s newspaper industry.

When Newspapers Go Mobile： Utilizing the Third Screen to Make a Profit

This paper examines the effect of adding the third screen to current newspaper business models. Newspapers have begun to employ such technologies to bolster audience numbers and to attract more advertisers. The comparison of the old revenue model of newspapers with a new emerging business model utilizing newer technologies allows a framework of a possibly new model to be applied to older models. Media are desperate to gain audiences lost in the past decade and trying to reformulate their current business models to reflect new technology. The way media are framing the third screen as a possible savior to their current business model shows that the media realize the old model of revenue through advertising and subscriptions is antiquated. This paper presents a new business model for media by embracing new technologies and adds to current scholarship of media management in a new technologically inclined world.

Opportunities and Challenges:Chinese Newspapers in Transition

Chinese newspaper industry has entered into a new historical period;the prospect of newspaper is becoming an important topic of academic and industrial.Facing the media ecological reconstruction brought by media convergence,mobile circumstance,and internet plus,the norm of newspaper media in the past has been broken,facing new adjustment.Newspaper explored with hard since it confronted both opportunities and challenges.This article summarizes the basic situation and main advantages of newspaper media development.By analyzing newspaper transformation practice,this paper tries to discuss the future direction and what newspaper media can achieve in view of the current main difficulties.The analysis of the essence and effect of newspaper transformation,as well as the rationalization proposals,will be beneficial for newspaper media to recognize the situation,find the correct position,and create expression,so as to meet both opportunities and challenges.

Maintaining Power by Guarding the Gates： Journalists＇ Perceptions of Audience Participation in Online Newspapers

Focus on audience participation in online news media has increased rapidly in recent years. Online newspapers offer their audience several opportunities to participate, for example, by submitting comments on articles or uploading pictures/videos. Audience participation has also emerged as a fast growing research field： The motives for focusing on audience participation have been analyzed and the kind of participatory opportunities that news media offer the audience have been mapped. Also, questions on whether audience participation should be regarded as an advantage or disadvantage to professional journalism have been discussed. This study relates to the latter perspective as it examines media practitioners＇ perceptions of audience participation. By focusing on the case of Swedish newspaper journalists, this study analyzes how audience participation is perceived to affect journalistic work and to what extent such participation is believed to benefit journalism. Based on a representative survey of Swedish journalists, conducted in 2011-2012, and a survey of journalists working at three local morning papers in Sweden, conducted in 2009, the analyses reveal a rather ambivalence attitude to audience participation among the journalistic corps.
