Design/methodology/approach: We realize that patentevaluation and influence on a company's profits is a complicated issue requiring different perspectives. For this reason we design two types of structural h-indices, derived from the International Patent Classification (IPC). In a case study we apply not only basic statistics but also a nested case-control methodology. Findings: The resulting indicator values based on a large dataset (19,080 patents in total) from the pharmaceutical industry show that the new structural indices are significantly correlated with a firm's profits. Research limitations: The new structural index and the synthetic structural index have just been applied in one case study in the pharmaceutical industry. Practical implications: Our study suggests useful implications for patentometric studies and leads to suggestions for different sized firms to include a healthy research and development (R&D) policy management. The structural h-index can be used to gauge the profits resulting from the innovative performance of a firm's patent portfolio. Originality/value: Traditionally, the breadth and depth of patents of a firm and their citations are considered separately. This approach, however, does not provide an integrated insight in the major characteristics of a firm's patents. The Sh(Y) index, proposed in our investigation, can reflect a firm's innovation activities, its technological breadth, and its influence in an integrated way.展开更多

Findings from the analysis show a continual increase of carbon fibers patents since 1969,and the growth rate began even faster after the year of 2005. Five countries( Japan,China,US,Germany and Korea) took dominant positions in global carbon fibers R&D,and the sum of patents applied in these five countries accounted for 80% of the total patents in the world. Corporations do play an active role in global carbon fibers R&D,and over 60% of patents were applied by corporations. Among them, the top 3 corporations were all from Japan, which had much more patents than the other patent assignees. Furthermore, most corporations were not active in cooperation with others, except Toyota Motor Corp. Global carbon fibers R&D focused on sheet manufacture cloth, core wire layer, heat connect provide and filter activated draw. And there is big difference between Japan and China in the R&D focus. China's corporations have exhibited rapid growth in the number of patent applications in recent years, but there is still a large gap between China and foreign countries in view of global patent layout and influence. By providing the insight into the evolution of global carbon fibers industrial and technological development through the perspective of patent analysis, this study hopes to provide an objective statistic reference for future policy directions and academic researches.展开更多

In this paper, we show that firms' technological impact patterns cannot be captured by the state-of-the-art dynamical models for the evolution of scientists' research impact, such as the Q model. Therefore, we propose a time-varying returns model which integrates the empiricallyobserved relation between patent order and technological impact into the Q model. The proposed model can reproduce the timing pattern of firms' highest-impact patents accurately. Our results shed light on modeling the differences behind the impact dynamics of researchers and firms.展开更多

Patents also serve as a strategic data source that can be mined to discover state-of-the-art technical development and subsequently help guide R&D investments. This research incorporates an ontology schema to extract and represent patent concepts. A clustering algorithm with non-exhaustive overlaps is proposed to overcome deficiencies with exhaustive clustering methods used in patent mining and technology discovery. The non-exhaustive clustering approach allows for the clustering of patent documents with overlapping technical findings and claims, a feature that enables the grouping of patents that define related key innovations. Legal advisors can use this approach to study potential cases of patent infringement or devise strategies to avoid litigation. The case study demonstrates the use of non-exhaustive overlaps algorithm by clustering US and Japan radio frequency identification (RFID) patents and by analyzing the legal implications of automated discovery of patent infringement.展开更多

Identifying trends...Advancing portable electronics and electric vehicles is heavily dependent on the cutting-edge lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery technology, which is closely linked to the properties of cathode materials. Identifying trends and prospects of cathode materials based on patent analysis is considered a kernel to optimize and refine battery related markets. In this paper, a patent analysis is performed on 6 popular cathode materials by comprehensively considering performance comparison, development trend, annual installed capacity, technology life cycle, and distribution among regions and patent assignees. In the technology life cycle, the cathode materials majorly used in electric vehicle have entered maturity stage, while the lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) cathode that is widely used in portable electronics is still in the growth stage. In global patent distributions, China holds more than 50% of total patents. In the top 10 patent assignees of 6 cathode materials, 2 institutes are from China with the rest being Japan (6) and Republic of Korea (2), indicating that the technology of cathode materials in China is relatively scattered while cathode research is highly concentrated in Japan and Republic of Korea. Moreover, the patent distribution has to consider practical issues as well as the impacts of core patents. For example, the high cost discourages the intention of applying international patents. This paper is expected to stimulate battery research, understand technical layout of various countries, and probably forecast innovative technology breakthroughs.展开更多

文摘Recent studies in complexity science have uncovered temporal regularities in the dynamics of impact along scientific and other creative careers, but they did not extend the obtained insights to firms. Our results shed light on modeling the differences behind the impact dynamics of researchers and firms.
文摘The performance and reliability of structural components are greatly influenced by the presence of any abnormality in them.To this purpose, structural health monitoring(SHM)is recognized as a necessary tool to ensure the safety precautions and efficiency of both mechanical and civil infrastructures.Till now, most of the previous work has emphasized the functioning of several SHM techniques and systematic changes in SHM execution. However, there exist insufficient data in the literature regarding the patent-based technological developments in the SHM research domain which might be a useful source of detailed information for worldwide research institutes. To address this research gap,a method based on the Co-Operative Patent Classification(CPC)codes is proposed in the current study. The proposed method includes the patent analysis of SHM in terms of its global publication trend and technology-based applications. This analysis is performed using patent database search tools, namely,IncoPat and Espacenet. The period ranging from 2005 to 2019 is selected to retrieve the required patent documents.A new approach termed as Patents’value is utilized to investigate the technological impact of a patent in the form of forward citations, technical stability, and scope of protection. The identification of emerging SHM techniques and forecasting of vacant technology is also part of current research work. The research results have revealed the increasing trend in the number of published patents each year related to various SHM technologies. In this regard,China, the United States, and South Korea are notified as to the major depositor countries, respectively.Hence, mapping of patent data in this research is an effort to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method to demonstrate the development trends and dynamic inventions over the time in SHM research domain to achieve the optimal damage inspections of various mechanical components.

文摘Patent documents are unique external sources of information that reveal the core technology underlying new inventions. The case study demonstrates the use of non-exhaustive overlaps algorithm by clustering US and Japan radio frequency identification (RFID) patents and by analyzing the legal implications of automated discovery of patent infringement.
文摘Coronavirus causes significant damage to human health and the global economy. In this paper,we undertake patent analysis and data mining to systematically analyze the trend in patent applications for coronavirus detection, prevention, and treatment technologies. Our goals are to determine the correlation between typical coronavirus outbreaks and changes in patent technology applications, and to compare the research and development(R&D)progress, patent layout, and characteristics of major institutions in various countries experiencing coronavirus outbreaks. We find that the United States commenced coronavirus detection and vaccine technology R&D earlier than other countries,as it attached importance to the R&D for treatment technologies from the time of the SARS outbreak and initiated the trend of multi-party R&D,with full technology chain coverage by the government, enterprises, universities, and research institutions.China’s patent applications have grown rapidly in recent years, mainly based on the R&D of research institutions and universities, although it has formed full technology chain coverage. However, the patent quality and technology global layout still need to be improved. This paper reviews the patent development trends of important coronavirus technologies, and proposes that policymakers should establish a long-term mechanism for R&D,pay attention to intellectual property protection, and deepen international technical cooperation to provide a reference for the development and application of coronavirus detection technology, vaccine technology, and treatment technology.

文摘Advancing portable electronics and electric vehicles is heavily dependent on the cutting-edge lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery technology, which is closely linked to the properties of cathode materials. This paper is expected to stimulate battery research, understand technical layout of various countries, and probably forecast innovative technology breakthroughs.
