One potential solution is to develop personalized medicine approaches based on strategies that target the most prevalent cellular events that are perturbed in patients. Here, we focus on alsin and spastin, two proteins that are identified as “causative” for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and hereditary spastic paraplegia, respectively, when mutated. Our review analyzes the protein interactome for alsin and spastin, the canonical pathways that are primarily important for each protein domain, as well as compounds that are either Food and Drug Administration–approved or are in active clinical trials concerning the affected cellular pathways. This line of research begins to pave the way for personalized medicine approaches that are desperately needed for rare neurodegenerative diseases that are complex and heterogeneous.展开更多

Previous researches have presented associations among personality traits, medication beliefs and adherence to long-term medication treatment in individuals with different chronic diseases. However, there is limited knowledge about associations among personality traits, medication belief and adherence to diabetic treatment in Africa. It was on this basis that this study was undertaken to assess the personality traits and personal beliefs of patients on medication for Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and to also assess adherence to treatment. Methodology: This study was a descriptive cross sectional study. Using a systematic random sampling technique, 223 patients attending the diabetic clinic of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Lagos were selected over a period of 12 weeks. Patients were interviewed using the Big Five-factor Personality Inventory, Medication Belief Questionnaire and the Medication Adherence Report Scale. Data were statistically analyzed using descriptive statistics, Student’s t-tests, Chi Square Tests and Pearson’s correlations analysis. Results: Non-adherence was estimated to be 40.8%. Non-adherent respondents had lower mean score of neuroticism personality traits compared to adherent respondents. Pearson’s correlation analysis showed a weak negative relationship between neuroticism personality trait and adherence behaviour (P < 0.05). There was also a statistically significant weak correlation (r = 0.1) between specific concern medication belief and adherence to medication among respondents in the study (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Personality traits of diabetic patients can influence their adherence to treatment. Patients with neuroticism personality trait and specific concern medication belief tend to be non-adherent to medication. Healthcare providers should therefore pay more attention to the personality traits and medication beliefs of patients in providing effective management for diabetic patients.展开更多

文摘Although employers believe that encouraging and supporting physical exercise activities by purchasing fitness equipment and building sports venues can improve employees’well-being,the utilization rate is rather low.Since most of the evidence of the well-being promotion in the workplace concentrated on the perspectives of organizational factors and psychosocial factors and focused on the reduction of the negative affect of well-being,it is still an open question whether physical exercise has benefits on both negative and positive affect of well-being and who benefits more from physical exercise. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of physical exercise on occupational well-being(job burnout and work engagement)and examine whether effectiveness depends on personality traits.Online questionnaires were distributed. The sample included 671 participants from different enterprises in China. Results showed that the effectiveness of physical exercise was also applicable to well-being in the workplace.Physical exercise was negatively correlated with job burnout and positively correlated with work engagement. The effectiveness was different among employees with different personality traits.Contrary to our expectation, individuals with neuroticism were more likely to improve their work engagement through physical exercise.Extroversion and conscientiousness weakened the benefits of physical exercise. Therefore, differences of effectiveness among different personality traits emphasize the need for a more personalized strategy in physical exercise interventions.

文摘Biometrics, which has become integrated with our daily lives, could fall prey to falsification attacks, leading to security concerns. In our paper,we use Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions(TEOAE)that are generated by the human cochlea in response to an external sound stimulus,as a biometric modality.TEOAE are robust to falsification attacks,as the uniqueness of an individual’s inner ear cannot be impersonated. In this study,we use both the raw 1D TEOAE signals,as well as the 2D time-frequency representation of the signal using Continuous Wavelet Transform(CWT).We use 1D and 2D Convolutional Neural Networks(CNN)for the former and latter, respectively,to derive the feature maps. The corresponding lower-dimensional feature maps are obtained using principal component analysis, which is then used as features to build classifiers using machine learning techniques for the task of person identification.T-SNE plots of these feature maps show that they discriminate well among the subjects.Among the various architectures explored,we achieve a best-performing accuracy of 98.95%and 100%using the feature maps of the 1D-CNN and 2D-CNN,respectively,with the latter performance being an improvement over all the earlier works. This performance makes the TEOAE based person identification systems deployable in real-world situations, along with the added advantage of robustness to falsification attacks.
文摘Background: This study explored nursing personality traits (Big Five Inventory BFI), emotional intelligence (EI), and thinking styles (Rational, RS, and Experiential, ES) together with demographic data to see how they could relate and the implication of this on nurses and patient safety. Design: A cross-sectional study. Methods: Nursing sample (n = 435). Participants completed a self-report online survey, which included demographic information, followed by questionnaires to measure personality traits, thinking styles, and emotional intelligence. Results: Spearman’s rank correlation was computed to assess the relationship between EI and Extraversion;there was a moderate positive correlation between the two variables, r = 0.487, p r = 0.731, p r = 0.723, p r = -0.666, p r = 0.467, p Conclusion: Different studies consolidated each other, and all converge and channel into the concept of characterization of healthcare providers for better support to them and safer patient care. EI correlated with all BFI components, and both positively impacted all desirable behaviors. Therefore, it would be valuable if organizations invested in increasing EI in their providers as it might highlight areas for improvement and equip providers with appropriate and advantageous coping strategies.
文摘Background: Non-adherence to drug therapy is an important cause of treatment failure among patients with chronic conditions like diabetes. Healthcare providers should therefore pay more attention to the personality traits and medication beliefs of patients in providing effective management for diabetic patients.
文摘Purpose: This study aimed to clarify the relationship between respiratory muscle strength and balance in older people requiring support or nursing care. Methods: Thirty-seven older subjects aged 65 years or older who were certified as requiring nursing care or support were included in the study. Maximal inspiratory pressure (PIMAX), maximal expiratory pressure (PEMAX), and one-leg standing time were measured. Additionally, the Functional Reach Test (FRT) was performed. Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression analyses were performed. Results: One-leg standing time was positively correlated with PEMAX, and was particularly correlated with PIMAX, while FRT score was not correlated with respiratory muscle strength. Multiple regression analysis with one-leg standing time as the dependent variable and PIMAX and PEMAX as independent variables showed that only PIMAX was significantly correlated with one-leg standing time. Conclusion: Focusing on expiratory and inspiratory muscle strength is important for improving one-leg standing ability and thus preventing falls in older people.

文摘Personality rights are basic rights related to human dignity in the concept of human rights protection, and respect for personality rights is the basic prerequisite for safeguarding other human rights.Human rights protection exerts a profound impact on the value of legislation and enforcement practices of private international laws in the field of cross-border personality rights infringement in various countries, which is mainly manifested in the integration of substantive justice and the humanistic care concept of protecting the rights of vulnerable groups into formal justice, and expands the development space of human rights protection ideas in cross-border personality rights and tort conflict laws.the diversity of human rights protection values determines that cross-border personality rights infringement may lead to conflicts between personality rights and other basic rights, such as freedom of speech.to reconcile such conflicts,a workable method is to prioritize personality rights protection in accordance with the hierarchy of rights theory in the value judgment of public order reservation or to clarify the limits of the right holder’s tolerance obligation through the limited application of the principle of proportionality.China’s current cross-border personality rights and tort conflict law can optimize the protection of the rights of vulnerable groups by diversifying the options of available legal methods, and establish a balancing mechanism between personality rights and freedom of speech,so as to improve China’s legal protection system for human rights in the field of foreign-related civil and commercial affairs.

文摘Personality recognition plays a pivotal role when developing user-centric solutions such as recommender systems or decision support systems across various domains, including education,e-commerce,or human resources.Tra-ditional machine learning techniques have been broadly employed for personality trait identification;nevertheless, the development of new technologies based on deep learning has led to new opportunities to improve their performance. This study focuses on the capabilities of pre-trained language models such as BERT,RoBERTa,ALBERT,ELECTRA,ERNIE,or XLNet,to deal with the task of personality recognition. These models are able to capture structural features from textual content and comprehend a multitude of language facets and complex features such as hierarchical relationships or long-term dependencies. This makes them suitable to classify multi-label personality traits from reviews while mitigating computational costs. The focus of this approach centers on developing an architecture based on different layers able to capture the semantic context and structural features from texts. Moreover,it is able to fine-tune the previous models using the MyPersonality dataset, which comprises 9,917 status updates contributed by 250 Facebook users. These status updates are categorized according to the well-known Big Five personality model, setting the stage for a comprehensive exploration of personality traits. To test the proposal,a set of experiments have been performed using different metrics such as the exact match ratio, hamming loss,zero-one-loss,precision,recall,F1-score,and weighted averages. The results reveal ERNIE is the top-performing model, achieving an exact match ratio of 72.32%,an accuracy rate of 87.17%,and 84.41%of F1-score.The findings demonstrate that the tested models substantially outperform other state-of-the-art studies, enhancing the accuracy by at least 3%and confirming them as powerful tools for personality recognition. These findings represent substantial advancements in personality recognition, making them appropriate for the development of user-centric applications.

文摘Moisture-enabled electricity(ME)is a method of converting the potential energy of water in the external environment into electrical energy through the interaction of functional materials with water molecules and can be directly applied to energy harvesting and signal expression. However,ME can be unreliable in numerous applications due to its sluggish response to moisture, thus sacrificing the value of fast energy harvesting and highly accurate information representation. Here,by constructing a moisture-electric-moisture-sensitive(ME-MS)heterostructure,we develop an efficient ME generator with ultra-fast electric response to moisture achieved by triggering Grotthuss protons hopping in the sensitized ZnO,which modulates the heterostructure built-in interfacial potential, enables quick response(0.435 s),an unprecedented ultra-fast response rate of 972.4 mV s^(−1),and a durable electrical signal output for 8 h without any attenuation. Our research provides an efficient way to generate electricity and important insight for a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of moisture-generated carrier migration in ME generator, which has a more comprehensive working scene and can serve as a typical model for human health monitoring and smart medical electronics design.
文摘In this editorial,we comment on the article by Zhang et al entitled Development of a machine learning-based model for predicting the risk of early postoperative recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma.Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),which is characterized by high incidence and mortality rates, remains a major global health challenge primarily due to the critical issue of postoperative recurrence.Early recurrence, defined as recurrence that occurs within 2 years posttreatment,is linked to the hidden spread of the primary tumor and significantly impacts patient survival.Traditional predictive factors, including both patient-and treatment-related factors, have limited predictive ability with respect to HCC recurrence. The integration of machine learning algorithms is fueled by the exponential growth of computational power and has revolutionized HCC research. The study by Zhang et al demonstrated the use of a groundbreaking preoperative prediction model for early postoperative HCC recurrence.Challenges persist, including sample size constraints, issues with handling data, and the need for further validation and interpretability. This study emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts, multicenter studies and comparative analyses to validate and refine the model.Overcoming these challenges and exploring innovative approaches, such as multi-omics integration, will enhance personalized oncology care. This study marks a significant stride toward precise, efficient, and personalized oncology practices, thus offering hope for improved patient outcomes in the field of HCC treatment.
