Investigating the Relationships among Leisure, Coping, and Personal Growth among People with Physical Disabilities

Little information exists with regard to the relationship between leisure and coping mechanisms among people with physical disabilities.The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships among leisure,coping,and personal growth among people with physical disabilities living in the U.S.Using a purposive sampling strategy,121 participants completed all 3 instruments:assessment of leisure and recreation involvement,coping strategy indicator,and personal growth.Frequency,descriptive analysis,Pearson correlations,and path analysis were utilized to test the relationship between leisure involvement,coping strategies,and personal growth.There were statistically significant direct effects of leisure involvement and avoidance-withdrawal coping strategies on personal growth.The effects of social support seeking coping strategies and problem-solving coping strategies on personal growth were not statistically significant.Results also indicated that leisure involvement had significant direct effects on social support seeking,avoidance-withdrawal,and problem-solving coping strategies.The results demonstrated that leisure engagement was associated with coping strategies and personal growth.In particular,leisure engagement had direct effects on problem-solving coping,social seeking coping,and avoidance/withdrawal coping as well as a direct effect on personal growth.

An Analysis of Amir in The Kite Runner from the Perspective of Personal Growth

Since its first publication of The Kite Runner in 2003, it has drawn considerable publicity and received praises from the critics all over the world. Up till now, many scholars have studied the novel in such aspects as religious disputes, racial discrimination, the images of kite, portrait of Hassan, betrayal and redemption and narrative strategies, etc. However, this paper chooses to analyze such features as the plot pattern, contents and set of characters reflected in the novel to explore how the novel describes the characterization of Amir from the perspective of personal growth.

Be Called and Be Healthier:How Does Calling Influence Employees’Anxiety and Depression in the Workplace?

Despite limited studies have found the negative relationships between calling and mental health symptoms,its underlying mechanism is still unknown.Drawing on the conservation of resources theory(COR),this study developed the resources model that explains the relationships between career calling,anxiety and depression,and the underlying mechanism.With a sample of 628 employees from the two-wave survey,the theorized model was tested.The results showed that career calling was able to decrease the levels of employees’anxiety and depression,and two important resources(i.e.,personal growth,and meaningful work)provided explanatory mechanisms for the relationships.The findings highlight the importance of spirituality in the workplace.Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Benefi ts of Internationalization to Students Cosmopolitan Competency

Higher education institutions across the world are responding to globalization through internationalization.However,there is limited research that focuses on the benefits of both internationalization-at-home and cross-border internationalization to students’cosmopolitan competency from the perspective of students.Therefore,this qualitative case study explored the benefits of internationalization to students from the perspectives of both domestic and international undergraduate and graduate students at two U.S universities.Purposeful and snowball sampling strategies were adopted to identify sixteen students.Data were garnered via interviews,institutions’websites,and documents.Constant comparative method was employed to analyze the data.Findings from this study revealed that students acquired bilingual or multilingual abilities,fi rsthand cultural knowledge,global knowledge,cultural nuances critical to showing respect to people from different cultures and geographical backgrounds,friendship and networking,personal growth,high tendency to develop empathy through university internationalization,and opportunity to taste food from different parts of the world.The study recommends that,institutions of higher education should provide opportunities such as foreign language courses,Rosetta Stones,language laboratories,foreign language conversation hour sessions,English as a Second Language(ESL)or Intensive English Language program for students.Also,administrators and faculty are encouraged to provide a platform for study abroad returnees to share their experiences with their colleagues.Higher education institutions should continue to recruit more international students to enrich students’experiences and global learning.
