The Effect of Organ Temperature on Total Yield of Transplanted and Direct-Seeded Rice(Oryza sativa L.)

The canopy temperature of rice is an important index that directly reflects the growth and physiological state of rice,and affects the yield of rice plants to a great extent.The correlation between the temperatures of different rice organs and canopy in different growth stages and the grain yield is complex.The stability and universality of these correlations must be verified.We conducted a pot experiment using two rice varieties and two temperature treatments(high temperature treatment was carried out at the beginning of heading stage for 10 days).We measured rice organ temperature during seven stages of growth using a high-precision infrared thermal imager.Results showed that the optimal observation period for the rice canopy temperature was 13:00.Although the rice variety did not significantly impact the canopy or organ temperature(p>0.05),the different organs and canopy exhibited significantly different temperatures(p<0.05).The correlations between the leaf,stem,panicle,canopy–air temperature differences and seed setting rate,theoretical and actual yields were the strongest during the milk stage.Among them,the correlation coefficient betweenΔT_(s) and theoretical and actual yields was the highest,the relationship between theoretical yield(Y)andΔT_(s)(X)was Y=−5.6965X+27.778,R^(2)=0.9155.Compared withΔT_(l),ΔT_(p) andΔTc,ΔT_(s) was closely related to the main traits of plants.ΔT_(s) could better reflect the growth characteristics of rice thanΔT_(c),such as dry matter accumulation(r=−0.931),SPAD(r=0.699),N concentration(r=0.714),transpiration rate(r=−0.722).In conclusion,stem temperature was more important indicator than canopy temperature.Stem temperature is a better screening index for rice breeding and cultivation management in the future. 展开更多

Soybeans specially the widely planted cultivars have been dramatically improved in agronomic performance and is well adapted to local planting environments after long-time domestication and breeding.Uncovering the unique genomic features of popular cultivars will help to understand how soybean genomes have been modified through breeding.We re-sequenced 134 soybean cultivars that were released and most widely planted over the last century in China.Phylogenetic analyses established that these cultivars comprise two geographically distinct sub-populations:Northeast China (NE) versus the HuangHuai-Hai River Valley and South China (HS).A total of 309 selective regions were identified as being impacted by geographical origins.The HS sub-population exhibited higher genetic diversity and linkage disequilibrium decayed more rapidly compared to the NE sub-population.To study the association between phenotypic differences and geographical origins,we recorded the vegetative period under different growing conditions for two years,and found that clustering based on the phenotypic data was closely correlated with cultivar geographical origin.By iteratively calculating accumulated genetic diversity,we established a platform panel of cultivars and have proposed a novel breeding strategy named "Potalaization"for selecting and utilizing the platform cultivars that represent the most genetically diversity and the highest available agronomic performance as the "plateau"for accumulating elite loci and traits,breeding novel widely adapted cultivars,and upgrading breeding technology.In addition to providing new genomic information for the soybean research community,the "Potalaization"strategy that we devised will also be practical for integrating the conventional and molecular breeding programs of crops in the post-genomic era. 展开更多

With increasingly intensifying degradation of natural grasslands and rapidly increasing demand of high quality forages, natural grasslands in China have been converted into planted grasslands at an unprecedented rate and the magnitude of the conversion in Inner Mongolia is among the national highest where the areal extent of planted grasslands ranks the second in China. Such land-use changes(i.e., converting natural grasslands into planted grasslands) can significantly affect carbon stocks and carbon emissions in grassland ecosystems. In this study, we analyzed the effects of converting natural grasslands into planted grasslands(including Medicago sativa, Elymus cylindricus, and M. sativa+E. cylindricus) on ecosystem respiration(F(eco)) in Inner Mongolia of China. Diurnal F(eco) and its components(i.e., total soil respiration(F(ts)), soil heterotrophic respiration(F(sh)) and vegetation autotrophic respiration(F(va))) were measured in 2012(27 July to 5 August) and 2013(18 July to 25 July) in the natural and planted grasslands. Meteorological data, aboveground vegetation data and soil data were simultaneously collected to analyze the relationships between respiration fluxes and environmental factors in those grasslands. In 2012, the daily mean F(eco) in the M. sativa grassland was higher than that in the natural grassland, and the daily mean F(va) was higher in all planted grasslands(i.e., M. sativa, E. cylindricus, and M. sativa+E. cylindricus) than in the natural grassland. In contrast, the daily mean F(ts) and F(sh) were lower in all planted grasslands than in the natural grassland. In 2013, the daily mean F(eco), F(ts) and F(va) in all planted grasslands were higher than those in the natural grassland, and the daily mean F(sh) in the M. sativa+E. cylindricus grassland was higher than that in the natural grassland. The two-year experimental results suggested that the conversion of natural grasslands into planted grasslands can generally increase the F(eco) and the increase in F(eco) is more pronounced when the plantation becomes more mature. The results also indicated that F(sh) contributed more to F(eco) in the natural grassland whereas F(va) contributed more to F(eco) in the planted grasslands. The regression analyses show that climate factors(air temperature and relative humidity) and soil properties(soil organic matter, soil temperature, and soil moisture) strongly affected respiration fluxes in all grasslands. However, our observation period was admittedly too short. To fully understand the effects of such land-use changes(i.e., converting natural grasslands into planted grasslands) on respiration fluxes, longer-term observations are badly needed. 展开更多

MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) is a key instrument aboard the Terra (EOS AM) and Aqua (EOS PM) satellites. Linear spectral mixture models are applied to MOIDS data for the sub-pixel classification of land covers. Shaoxing county of Zhejiang Province in China was chosen to be the study site and early rice was selected as the study crop. The derived proportions of land covers from MODIS pixel using linear spectral mixture models were compared with unsupervised classification derived from TM data acquired on the same day, which implies that MODIS data could be used as satellite data source for rice cultivation area estimation, possibly rice growth monitoring and yield forecasting on the regional scale. 展开更多

We determined a suitable amount of fertilizer for konara oak(Quercus serrata) and Japanese zelkova(Zelkova serrata) planted in a harvested pitch pine(Pinus rigida) plantation. Two-year-old bare-root seedlings of konara oak and one-year-old containerized seedlings of Japanese zelkova were planted in April 2011. Three plots were established for each tree species to evaluate each of three fertilization applications. Solid compound fertilizer(N:P:K = 3:4:1) was applied yearly in three amounts(control: no fertilization, F1: 180 kg ha-1, and F2:360 kg ha-1), every May from 2011 to 2013. We measured the root collar diameter and height, and analyzed the compartmental N and P concentrations. Compartmental N concentrations of konara oak and Japanese zelkova were not consistent based on amount of fertilization. However,the compartmental P concentrations of konara oak and Japanese zelkova were significantly different in the order of F2, F1, and control. Although the differences in growth of konara oak appeared after 3 years of fertilization,Japanese zelkova showed differences after only 2 years of fertilization owing to differences in seedling type. Growth of konara oak was affected by fertilization at F1 and F2 in2013. However, growth of Japanese zelkova was affected only at F2. Nutrient demand of Japanese zelkova appeard to be higher than that of konara oak, at least during the early growing period. Results from this study could be practically used in harvested pitch pine plantations to determine appropriate fertilization regimes. 展开更多

Management of wastewater is a concern of developing countries. In Burkina Faso, an on-site septic system installed on the property is predominant and those systems product high quantities of faecal sludge which are not treated adequately before discharge. Our country is mainly fed by surface water, while water is the main vector of many diseases. So it is very important to manage efficiently wastewater and faeces. The treatment of faecal sludge by planted beds can use local persistent emergent plants like Andropogon gayanus (LPA) and Cymbopogon nardus (LPN). Those planted beds are compared to a non-planted bed (sludge drying bed) (LT). Treating raw sludge (BB) we got the yield over 90% concerning the biological oxygen demand (BOD<sub>5</sub>) for the LPA while the two others gave performances of 75% and 76% respectively. Regarding the chemical oxygen demand (COD), LPN gave better yields with 77% of removal against 71% and 69% for LPA and LT respectively. Overall, the pilots assured removal of orthophosphates varying between 77% and 79%, while the Kjeldahl nitrogen is removed by the various beds with respective fields of 94%, 96.5% and 97.5% for LPN, LPA and LT. The microbiological pollution abatement is in the order of 1 log unit on average for all beds. 展开更多

Based on the variationpattern of these parameters, the prediction equations were established. Wood quality prediction can be realizedby these equations. Founder parents have contributed significantly to the improvement of wheat breeding and production. In order to investigate the genetic characteristics of founder parents and widely planted cultivars, Mazhamai(M), Biyumai(B) and six sibling lines(BM1–6) derived from the cross M×B were phenotyped for eight yield-related traits over multiple years and locations and genotyped using the the wheat 90 K single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP) assay. BM4 has been used as a founder parent, and BM1 has been widely planted, whereas BM2, 3, 5, and 6 have not been used extensively for breeding or planting in China. Phenotypic comparisons revealed that BM4 and BM1 displayed a better overall performance than the other sibling lines. BM1 showed higher thousand-grain weight than BM4, whereas BM4 exhibited lower coefficient of variation for most of the yield-related traits across different years and locations, indicating that BM4 was widely adaptable and more stable in different environments. SNP analysis revealed that BM4 and BM1 inherited similar proportions of the M genome but are dissimilar to BM2, 3, 5, and 6. Both BM1 and BM4 have specific alleles that differ from the other BM lines, and most of these alleles are concentrated in specific chromosomal regions that are found to associate with favorable QTLs, these SNPs and their surrounding regions may carry the genetic determinants important for the superior performance of the two lines. But BM4 has more genetic diversity than BM1 with more specific alleles and pleiotropic regions, indicating that the genome of BM4 may be more complex than the other sibling lines and has more favorable gene resources. Our results provide valuable information that can be used to select elite parents for wheat and self-pollinating crop breeding. 展开更多

Korean pine(Pinus koraiensis) and broadleaved mixed forest in Northeast China has been changed regressively into secondary forest with almost no conifers.Planting Korean pine trees under the canopy of secondary forest is a feasible approach for recovering Korean pine and broadleaved mixed forest.For establishing an effective growth promotion method for under-canopy planted young Korean pine trees,two stands were selected as the experiment plots,Stand A(planted in 1989) and Stand B(planted in 1982),and an experiment of microenvironment regulation was conducted relying mainly on Opening degree(K=1,K=1.5,K=2,CK) in 2004.The results were shown that the adjustment had promoted growth of diameter and height of Korean pine planted in Stand A and Stand B,and had a significant influence on the growth rate of basal diameter,diameter at breast height and height in the two growth stands.The four years periodic increment of mean diameter and height of Korean pine planted in 1989 and in 1982 after regulation in K=1 level were 63.4%(D0) and 82.7%(H),64.8%(D1.3) and 69.7%(H) higher than that of control respectively.Quantitative regulation had significant influence on specific leaf area of Korean pine planted in 1989,and the current year specific leaf area(SLA) was lager than perennial year SLA.Quality indexes of natural pruning capacity,normal form quotient and crown size was not significantly changed but shown a positive tendency.The regulation scheme of Opening degree K=1 might be proper for adjusting the microenvironment of Korean pine trees planted under the canopy of secondary forest when the Korean pine trees were in the growth period of 15 to 26 years old in the experiment region. 展开更多

The under-forest economy has received increased attention in China.However,little is known about the effects of co-composted biochar on soil and plant biomass in under-forest planting systems.In this study,plant biomass,soil nutrient levels,and bacterial communities were evaluated after application of biochar-based organic fertilizer(BOF,derived from co-composted biochar-compost)at varying rates to soils supporting Tetrastigma hemsleyanum Diels&Gilg planted under a Moso bamboo(Phyllostachys edulis)forest.BOF treatment increased the biomass of T.hemsleyanum.Compared with the control,BOF application significantly increased soil pH and organic carbon(SOC).The high-throughput sequencing results showed significant differences in the Bacteroidetes,Verrucomicrobia,Chlorofexi,and OD1 phyla among all groups.At the genus level,the control group was characterized by a preponderance of Conexibacter.Rhodanobacter was enriched in soils with a 3%BOF application and Steroidobacter and Spirochaeta were the most prominent phyla in the 5%BOF group.There was no biomarker selected in the 1%BOF group at the genus level.In conclusion,BOF application increased the biomass of T.hemsleyanum when intercropped under a Moso bamboo forest;this effect may be due to changes in the soil physicochemical properties and microbial communities after BOF application. 展开更多

The objectives of this study were to evaluate growth, yield and nutrients removal of five cassava cultivars planted by different planting methods in late rainy season of northeastern Thailand. A split plot design was used in this study. The planting methods (vertical and horizontal) were assigned as main-plots. Cassava cultivars (Rayong-7, Rayong-11, Rayong-72, Huaybong-80 and E-dum) were assigned as sub-plots with four replications. Results showed that vertical planting gave significantly higher fresh storage root yield than those of horizontal planting, across five cassava cultivars. The cultivar Rayong-7 produced maximum fresh storage root yield across two planting methods, but not significantly different from Rayong 11, Huaybong 80 and Edum cultivars. Irrespective of nutrient removal, N, P and K removed ranges from 2.9 - 3.6, 0.8 - 1.3 and 5.3 - 7.9 kg per ton fresh root weight, respectively depending on cassava cultivar. The cultivar Rayong-7 removed the highest quantities of N, and the cultivar Rayong-11 removed maximum of P and K in the present study. Regardless of nutrient removal at different plant parts;N, P and K removed maximum quantities in leaf, stem and storage root, respectively. Planting method had no significant effect on N and P removal, but significant effect on K removal. The vertical planting removed K higher than those of horizontal planting. 展开更多

[Objectives]This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Vitis heyneana cultivation on rocky hillsides on the variation of soil fertility,so as to provide theoretical support for economic development and the control of rocky desertification in the Dashi mountainous area.[Methods]Taking V.heyneana planting base in Luocheng County,Hechi City,Guangxi Province as the research object,the methods of field investigation,regular sampling and experimental analysis were used to analyze seasonal variations of soil urease,sucrase and soil alkaline phosphatase activity of 15 different sample plots surveyed,and their correlation with soil physical and chemical properties was analyzed.[Results]①In general,sucrase,urease and alkaline phosphatase were lower in summer and autumn,and higher in spring and winter,and the performance of the activity of the three enzymes was inconsistent.Among them,the activity of sucrase was in order of spring>autumn>summer>winter,and the activity of urease and alkaline phosphatase showed an order of winter>spring>summer>autumn.②The seasonal variations of soil fertility in different sample plots were affected by various factors such as human disturbance,climate change,vegetation coverage,topography and landforms,cultivation and management measures,and although the change laws in different sample plots were different,the seasonal differences in soil fertility in the same place were extremely significant.③If the influence of artificial fertilization factors is excluded,the planting of V.heyneana on rocky hillsides will cause a significant decrease in soil enzyme activity,that is,a significant decrease in soil fertility.[Conclusions]Related issues such as the effects of planting V.heyneana on the variation of soil fertility in rocky hillsides should arouse necessary attention of management departments and producers. 展开更多

Marilene Olga dos Santos Silva 1·Marcela Gomes da Silva 1·LTachi-branco(Tachigali vulgaris,L.F.Gomes da Silva&H.C.Lima)is a leguminous tree species native to the Amazon rainforest that has drawn attention for its remarkably fast growth,a required trait for biomass/bioenergy plantations.In evaluations of biomass production and wood properties of T.vulgaris planted in homogeneous plantations at diff erent spacings in the Amazonian state of Pará,Brazil,biomass of 7-year-old trees was quantifi ed for individual trees and the entire population.Wood was also sampled to assess properties relevant to bioenergy applications.The choice for spacing dimension for planting nonclonal T.vulgaris should consider whether the priority is greater productivity per tree,achieved with greater spacings(9.0 m 2 and 12.0 m 2),or productivity per area,achieved with closerina Bufalino 1·Maíra Reis de Assis 2·Delman de Almeida Goncalves 3·Paulo Fernando Trugilho 2·Thiago de Paula Protásio 4 spacings(6.0 m 2 and 7.5 m 2).Genetic variability of the T.vulgaris seed stand and/or high heritability of wood traits overcame the eff ect of diff erent spacing on all morphological,physical,chemical and energetic properties of T.vulgaris wood.This species has moderate basic density when cultivated at spacings larger than 6 m 2 and net heating value above 7.95 MJ/kg,which is suitable for bioenergy purposes.The high variation in wood properties within tree spacing is strongly indicative of great potential for genetic breeding.The fast growth and the suitable moderate wood basic density confi rm the outstanding potential of homogeneous plantations of T.vulgaris for providing wood for bioenergy. 展开更多

Agricultural land has a strategic function as the primary food provider for the people of Indonesia. Various methods of agricultural production estimation, particularly food crops, provide different information. It can be a source of error in decision making. Satellite data, provides information periodically, wide coverage area, can be used as a source of information on the condition of agricultural lands and even remote areas. The advantages of SAR data that does not depend on sunlight and can penetrate of clouds and fog can fill the lack of optical data. ALOS PALSAR data has been used for analysis and ALOS AVNIR-2 is for checking of land cover visually, with acquisition date on 10 May 2007. Sampling of each rice crop growth period used several of rice field conditions in each period, on one scene data. Results showed a possibility to use soil moisture conditions derived from ALOS PALSAR for estimating rice planting area. On a scatter diagram between backscatter of ALOS PALSAR and near infrared of ALOS AVNIR-2 showed a specific pattern for each growing period of paddy. The results of the analysis produce distribution maps of the rice planting area Subang area, West Java Province. However, validation of the method used remains to be done. Remote sensing results of this study are expected to provide better information and can contribute in the planning of higher quality agricultural land. 展开更多

Evapotranspiration of much planted vegetation exceeds precipitation, and this can deplete soil water and cause a deep dry layer in the soil profile, which is a serious obstacle to sustainable land use on the Loess Plateau, China. This study aimed to determine water depletion depth of planted grassland, shrub, and forest in a semiarid area on the Loess Plateau. Soil moisture of five vegetation types was measured to >20 m in depth. The vegetation types were crop, natural grasse, seven-year-old planted alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), 23-year-old planted caragana (Caragana microphylla Lam.) shrub, and 23-year-old planted pine (Pinus tabulaeformis L) forest land. Through comparing moisture of planted alfalfa grass, caragana shrub, and pine forest to crop and natural grassland, the depth and amount of soil water consumed by grassland, caragana brush and pine forest was determined. The depth of soil water depleted by alfalfa, caragana brush, and pine forest reached 15.5, 22.4 and 21.5 m, respectively. 展开更多

Continuous measurement of carbon dioxide exchange using the eddy covariance (EC) technique is made at the Qianyanzhou mid-subtropical planted forest as part of the ChinaFLUX network. Qianyanzhou planted forest is affected by typical subtropical continental monsoon climate. It has plentiful water and heat resource but is in inconsistency of its seasonal distribution in the mid-subtropical region, thus seasonal drought frequently occurs in this planted forest. In this study, seasonal drought effect on ecosystem carbon sequestration was analyzed based on net ecosystem productivity (NEP), ecosystem respiration (RE) and gross ecosystem productivity (GEP) at the month scale in 2003 and 2004. In this drought-stressed planted forest, ecosystem carbon sequestration showed a clear seasonality, with low rates during seasonal drought and in winter. The declining degree of ecosystem carbon sequestration under the seasonal drought condition was determined by the accumulation of soil moisture deficits and a co-occurrence of high temperatures. Different drought effects are expected for RE and GEP. The net effect of ecosystem carbon balance depends on how these two quantities are affected relatively to each other. Summer drought and heat wave are two aspects of weather that likely play an important part in the annual NEP of forest in this region. 展开更多

The current therapeutic drugs for Alzheimer's disease only improve symptoms,they do not delay disease progression.Therefo re,there is an urgent need for new effective drugs.The underlying pathogenic factors of Alzheimer's disease are not clear,but neuroinflammation can link various hypotheses of Alzheimer's disease;hence,targeting neuroinflammation may be a new hope for Alzheimer's disease treatment.Inhibiting inflammation can restore neuronal function,promote neuro regeneration,reduce the pathological burden of Alzheimer's disease,and improve or even reverse symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.This review focuses on the relationship between inflammation and various pathological hypotheses of Alzheimer's disease;reports the mechanisms and characteristics of small-molecule drugs(e.g.,nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs,neurosteroids,and plant extracts);macromolecule drugs(e.g.,peptides,proteins,and gene therapeutics);and nanocarriers(e.g.,lipid-based nanoparticles,polymeric nanoparticles,nanoemulsions,and inorganic nanoparticles)in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.The review also makes recommendations for the prospective development of anti-inflammatory strategies based on nanocarriers for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. 展开更多
