Geomagnetic storms can result in large magnetic field disturbances and intense currents in the magnetosphere and even on the ground.As an important medium of momentum and energy transport among the solar wind,magnetosphere,and ionosphere,field-aligned currents(FACs)can also be strengthened in storm times.This study shows the responses of FACs in the plasma sheet boundary layer(PSBL)observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale(MMS)spacecraft in different phases of a large storm that lasted from May 27,2017,to May 29,2017.Most of the FACs were carried by electrons,and several FACs in the storm time also contained sufficient ion FACs.The FAC magnitudes were larger in the storm than in the quiet period,and those in the main phase were the strongest.In this case,the direction of the FACs in the main phase showed no preference for tailward or earthward,whereas the direction of the FACs in the recovery phase was mostly tailward.The results suggest that the FACs in the PSBL are closely related to the storm and could be driven by activities in the tail region,where the energy transported from the solar wind to the magnetosphere is stored and released as the storm is evolving.Thus,the FACs are an important medium of energy transport between the tail and the ionosphere,and the PSBL is a significant magnetosphere–ionosphere coupling region in the nightside. 展开更多

Using plasma build-up welding technology, Ni60, WC, Cr3C2, and TiC composite powders were clad on the surface of the substrate in a certain proportion according to the metallurgical bonding method to increase the bond strength between the coating and the substrate. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy were used to observe the microstructure of the surfacing layer and the chemical composition of the sample. The hardness and wear resistance of the surfacing layer were tested and analyzed by the HV-1000 hardness tester and the impact wear device. The results showed that in the microstructure, fishbone, spider-web, and floral-like structures appeared in the surfacing layer. When the micro-hardness was tested, the depth of the indentation reflected the hardness of the surfacing layer. When analyzing wear resistance, the amount of wear increases with time. 展开更多

The turbulent boundary layer control on NACA 0012 airfoil with Mach number ranging from 0.3 to 0.5 by a spanwise array of dielectric barrier discharge(DBD)plasma actuators by hot-film sensor technology is investigated.Due to temperature change mainly caused through heat produced along with plasma will lead to measurement error of shear stress measured by hot-film sensor,the correction method that takes account of the change measured by another sensor is used and works well.In order to achieve the value of shear stress change,we combine computational fluid dynamics computation with experiment to calibrate the hot-film sensor.To test the stability of the hot-film sensor,seven repeated measurements of shear stress at Ma=0.3 are conducted and show that confidence interval of hot-film sensor measurement is from−0.18 to 0.18 Pa and the root mean square is 0.11 Pa giving a relative error 0.5%over all Mach numbers in this experiment.The research on the turbulent boundary layer control with DBD plasma actuators demonstrates that the control makes shear stress increase by about 6%over the three Mach numbers,which is thought to be reliable through comparing it with the relative error 0.5%,and the value is hardly affected by burst frequency and excitation voltage. 展开更多

The phenomenon of negative refraction, which arises from the negative refraction angle, can occur when a transverse magnetic wave is incident from air to the lossy plasma layer under certain conditions. The formula of the negative refraction angle is derived, and the dependences of the negative refraction angle on the angle of incidence, frequency of incidence, and lossy plasma layer are analytically investigated. Kinetic Alfvén waves(KAWs),with a strong parallel disturbed electric field,play an important role in energy transport and particle acceleration in the magnetotail.On the basis of high-resolution observations of the Magnetospheric Multiscale(MMS)Mission,we present a detailed description of the acceleration process of electrons by KAWs in the plasma sheet boundary layer(PSBL).The MMS observed strong electromagnetic disturbances carrying a parallel disturbed electric field with an amplitude of up to 8 mV/m.The measured ratio of the electric to magnetic field perturbations was larger than the local Alfvén speed and was enhanced as the frequency increased,consistent with the theoretical predictions for KAWs.This evidence indicates that the electromagnetic disturbances should be identified as KAWs.During the KAWs,the energy flux of electrons at energies above 1 keV in the parallel and anti-parallel directions are significantly enhanced,implying occurrences of electron beams at higher energies.Additionally,the KAWs became more electrostaticlike and filled with high-frequency ion acoustic waves.The energy enhancement of electron beams is in accordance with the derived work done with the observed parallel disturbed electric field of KAWs,indicating electron acceleration caused by KAWs.Therefore,these results provide direct evidence of electron acceleration by KAWs embodying electrostatic ion acoustic waves in the PSBL. 展开更多

Wide-bandgap gallium oxide(Ga_(2)O_(3))is one of the most promising semiconductor materials for solar-blind(200 nm to 280 nm)photodetection.In its amorphous form,amorphous gallium oxide(a-Ga_(2)O_(3))maintains its intrinsic optoelectronic properties while can be prepared at a low growth temperature,thus it is compatible with Si integrated circuits(ICs)technology.Herein,the a-Ga_(2)O_(3) film is directly deposited on pre-fabricated Au interdigital electrodes by plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition(PE-ALD)at a growth temperature of 250°C.The stoichiometric a-Ga_(2)O_(3) thin film with a low defect density is achieved owing to the mild PE-ALD condition.As a result,the fabricated Au/a-Ga_(2)O_(3)/Au photodetector shows a fast time response,high responsivity,and excellent wavelength selectivity for solar-blind photodetection.Furthermore,an ultra-thin MgO layer is deposited by PE-ALD to passivate the Au/a-Ga_(2)O_(3)/Au interface,resulting in the responsivity of 788 A/W(under 254 nm at 10 V),a 250-nm-to-400-nm rejection ratio of 9.2×10^(3),and the rise time and the decay time of 32 ms and 6 ms,respectively.These results demonstrate that the a-Ga_(2)O_(3) film grown by PE-ALD is a promising candidate for high-performance solar-blind photodetection and potentially can be integrated with Si ICs for commercial production. 展开更多

The European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association(EISCAT) Very High Frequency(224 MHz) Radar has been used to investigate the aspect sensitivity of polar mesosphere summer echoes(PMSE) in the period 13–15 July 2010. The aspect sensitivity of PMSE using this radar and at such a high frequency has not been previously reported. Data concerning the aspect sensitivity of PMSE were collected by traversing the antenna beam from the zenith direction, and comparing the received power. Surprisingly, as the intensity received by the oblique beam was often larger than that of the vertical beam, suggesting the presence of tilted dusty plasma layers as a potential cause, a theoretical model was developed to confirm the existence of these layers and their formation process. The experimental results and theoretical model presented help elucidate the structural properties of the possible generation mechanism of strong radar echoes in the polar summer mesosphere region. 展开更多

Theoretical analysis of the electromagnetic field distribution in the focal region of a long metallic parabolic reflector that has its surface covered with a magnetized plasma layer is derived. The incident wave is considered to be with a general oblique incidence for both parallel and perpendicular polarizations. The electromagnetic field intensity expressions along the focal region are obtained accurately using Maslov's method. The effects of plasma thickness on the reflected and transmitted field distributions are investigated. The effects of other physi- cal parameters such as the angle of incidence and the plasma and cyclotron frequencies on the transmitted field- intensity distribution along the focal region are also studied. The results obtained by Maslov's method and Kirchhoff's approximation are found to be in a good agreement. 展开更多

A1GaN/GaN high electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) with 5 nm A1N passivation by plasma en- hanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) were fabricated, covered by 50 nm SiNx which was grown by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). With PEALD A1N passivation, current collapse was suppressed more effectively and the devices show better subthreshold characteristics. Moreover, the insertion of A1N increased the RF transconductance, which lead to a higher cut-off frequency. Temperature dependence of DC characteristics demonstrated that the degradations of drain current and maximum transconductance at elevated temperatures for the A1N/SiNx passivated devices were much smaller compared with the devices with SiNx passivation, indicating that PEALD A1N passivation can improve the high temperature operation of the A1GaN/GaN HEMTs. 展开更多
