Three kinds of cast iron coatings were prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying. During the spraying, the mild steel substrate temperature was controlled to be averagely 50, 180, and 240℃, respectively. Abrasive wear tests were conducted on the coatings under a dry friction condition. It is ibund that the abrasive wear resistance is enhanced with the substrate temperature increasing. SEM observations show that the wear losses of the coatings during the wear tests mainly result from the spalling of the splats. Furthermore, the improved wear resis- tance of the coatings mainly owes to the formation of oxides and the enhancement in the mechanical properties with the substrate temperature increasing. 展开更多

Nanostructured WC-12Co coatings were deposited by high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) spraying with an agglomerated powder. The effect of flame conditions on the microstructure of the nanostructured coatings was investigated. The wear properties of the coatings were characterized using a dry rubber-wheel wear test. The results show that the nanostructured WC-Co coatings consist of WC, W2C, W and an amorphous binder phase. The microstructure of the coating is significantly influenced by the ratio of oxygen flow to fuel flow. Under the lower ratio of oxygen/fuel flow, the nanostructured coating presents a relative dense microstructure and severe decarburization of WC phase occurs during spraying. With increasing ratio of oxygen/fuel flow, the bonding of WC particles in the coating becomes loose resulting from the original structure of feedstock and the decarburization of WC becomes less owing to limited heating to the powder. Both the decarburization of WC particles in spraying and the bonding among WC particles in the coatings affect the wear performance. The examination of the worn surfaces of the nanostructured coatings reveals that the dominant wear mechanisms would be spalling from the interface of WCCo splats when spray particles undergo a limited melting. While the melting state of the spray particles is improved, the dominant wear mechanisms become the plastic deformation and plowing of the matrix and spalling of WC particles from the matrix. 展开更多

Al2O3-r2O03/NiCoCrAIYTa coatings were prepared via atmosphere plasma spraying (APS). The microstructure and phase com- position of the coatings were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), laser confocal scanning microsco- py (LSCM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The dry frictional wear behavior of the coatings at 500℃ in static air was inves- tigated and compared with that of 0Cr25Ni20 steel. The results show that the coatings comprise the slatted layers of oxide phases, unmelted particles, and pores. The hot abrasive resistance of the coatings is enhanced compared to that of 0Cr25Ni20, and their mass loss is approxi- mately one-fifteenth that of 0Cr25Ni20 steel. The main wear failure mechanisms of the coatings are abrasive wear, fatigue wear, and adhe- sive wear. 展开更多

The effects of parameters, in the process of plasma-sprayed ceramic coating, upon the deposition efficiency of alumina-13 wt.% titania composite coatings are reported. The coatings were prepared by the atmospheric plasma spray process. The plasma torch input power, flow rates of primary, secondary and carrier gas, powder feed rate and spraying distance were considered as variables. The results show that the variations in all the selected spraying parameters strongly affect the deposition efficiency. The micro-hardness, as well as erosive and sliding wear rates of the coating are also affected by these parameters. Especially the input power strongly affects the phase and microstructure of the coatings. 展开更多

Aero engine seal coatings can effectively improve the air tightness of aircraft engines and increase fuel efficiency. However, due to the frictional forces between the blades and the coating, the coating often flakes off, resulting in damage to the blades and causing eco-nomic losses. Therefore,it is necessary to analyze the friction between the blades and the coating. In this paper, three ceramic-based high-temperature seal coatings with different polyphenylene ester contents and a pure Yttria-stabilised zirconia coating were prepared by atmo-spheric plasma spraying(APS).The hardness and modulus of elasticity of the coated surfaces were obtained by hardness and modulus of elasticity tests, and the coatings were subjected to high-speed touch abrasion tests. The Hertzian contact model was used to calculate the maximum normal contact load on the coating during the process. The test values were compared with the theoretical values and it was found that the calculated values were always greater than the test values. In order to make the Hertzian contact model more accurate in calculating the touching and abrasion forces, the contact coefficients in the Hertzian contact model were optimized.Substituting the optimized coeffi-cients into the Hertzian contact model, the results show that the calculated results after optimizing the coefficients are much closer to the test values, with deviations from the test values ranging from 1%to 38%. 展开更多

Nanostructured and conventional Al2O3-13wt.%TiO2 ceramic coatings were prepared by plasma spraying with nanostructured agglomerated and conventional powders, respectively. The microstructure and microhardness of the coatings were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and microhardness measurement. Meanwhile, the friction and wear behaviors were analyzed and compared using a ball-on-disk tribometer. The results show that the conventional coating has lamellar stacking characteristic and has some pores. However, the nanostructured coating shows a bimodal microstructure, which is composed of both fully melted regions and partially melted regions. According to the microstructural difference, the partially melted regions can be divided into liquid-phase sintered regions (a three-dimensional net or skeleton-like structure: Al2O3-rich submicron particles embedded in the TiO2-rich matrix) and solid-phase sintered regions (remained nanoparticles). The microstructural characteristics of the liquid-phase sintered region are formed due to the selective melting of TiO2 nanoparticles during plasma spraying. On the other hand, the TiO2 and Al2O3 nanoparticles of the solid-phase sintered regions are all unmelted during plasma spraying. Due to the existence of nanostructured microstructures, the nanostructured coating has a higher microhardness, a lower friction coefficient, and a better wear resistance than the conventional coating. 展开更多

An experimental study has been carried out to investigate the influence of heat treatment at 300 ℃,450 ℃,550 ℃,650 ℃ and 800 ℃ on the microstructure and sliding wear behavior of Fe Al/WC intermetallic composite coatings produced by high velocity arc spraying (HVAS) and cored wires. The result shows, the main phases in both as sprayed and heat treated Fe Al/WC composite coatings are iron aluminide intermetallics (Fe 3Al+FeAl) and α as well as a little oxide (Al 2O 3) and carbides (WC, W 2C, Fe 2W 2C and Fe 6W 6C). After heat treated at 450-650 ℃, dispersion strengthening of Fe 2W 2C and Fe 6W 6C will lead to a rise in microhardness of the coatings. The microhardness is likely to be the most important factor which influences the sliding wear behavior of the coatings. Increasing the microhardness through heat treatment will improve the sliding wear resistance of the Fe Al/WC composite coatings. 展开更多

The sliding wear behaviors of a single layer AI2O3-30 wt pct ZrO2, a double layer AI2O3-30 wt pct ZrO2/Ni-Cr and a single layer AI2O3-13 wt pct TiO2 coating deposited on low carbon steel by plasma spraying were investigated under lubricated conditions with various normal loads. The plastic deformation, detachment and pull out of splats were involved in the wear process of the studied coatings under test conditions. Crack propagation was found in AI2O3-13 wt pct TiO2 under loads of 70 and 100 N and in AI2O3-30 wt pct ZrO2/Ni-Cr under a load of 130 N. While increasing the normal load, the wear rates of AI2O3-30 wt pct ZrO2 and AI2O3-30 wt pct ZrO2/Ni-Cr slightly increased, the wear rate of AI2O3-13 wt pct TiO2 increased rapidly. The results showed that the Ni-Cr bonding layer improved the wear resistance of the coating system even it is relatively thin compared with the outer coating layer. The influence of this bonding layer on wear behavior of the coating increased as increasing the normal load. 展开更多

Al-12.5 wt% Si alloy powder with 15 wt% SiCp was mechanically alloyed (MA) using attrition mill in purified nitrogen atmosphere. The MA processed powder was found to have nano grain size and uniform distribution of SiCp in the AlSi matrix. This MA processed powder was used for atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) for varying distances and currents densities. The coatings obtained were studied by image analyzer, SEM and XRD. Microhardness and wear rate of the coatings were evaluated using Vickers indenter and pin on disk type tribometer, respectively. Adhesion strength of the coatings was measured by interfacial indentation test. The results showed that these coatings have uniform distribution of reinforced SiC particles in the nano crystalline matrix, low porosity (1% - 2%), low wear rates and improved adhe-sion strength. It was also observed that by increasing current density of APS, the adhesive strength increased. 展开更多

Thermally sprayed coatings have been used in various fields of industry for enhancing surface characteristics of materials and extending their service life. The contact surface of some mechanical equipment such as the fine pulverization equipment which is used in the woody biomass production process is required to have wear resistance in the water environment. Thermally sprayed coatings would be a good candidate to improve surface wear resistance under water lubrication. The objective of this study was to evaluate the tribological performance of thermally sprayed coatings under water lubrication. Thermally sprayed coatings which were classified into WC, WB and Ni spraying of three categories were compared with water-lubricated sliding test at a sliding velocity of 0.02 m/s and mean pressure of p0 = 10 MPa with a ring-on-disk apparatus. Thermally sprayed coatings showed comparatively high friction coefficient and well wear resistance under water lubrication. WC contained coatings showed better wear resistance than WB and Ni coatings. Thermally sprayed coatings showed obviously different mechanical properties and tribological behaviors, and the effect of wettability and hardness on tribological characteristics was discussed under water lubrication. Friction coefficient increased as the surface contact angle of thermally sprayed coatings increased. The wear rate decreased as the surface hardness of thermally sprayed coatings increased. Wear resistance of thermally sprayed coatings was excellent under water lubrication. WC contained coatings showed lower wear rate than WB and Ni coatings. WC-14CoCr coating showed the lowest wear rate. 展开更多

In order to understand the tribological behavior of red mud composite coatings, the red mud and composite materials like fly ash, carbon and aluminum are being plasma sprayed. The coatings are investigated to know their morphological behavior and erosion wear characteristics. Plasma spraying is done at different plasma arc current like 200, 250, 300 and 400 amperes. Torch input powers maintained as 6, 9, 12 and 16 KW. The substrates chose are rectangular in shape having a dimension of 50 mm × 25 mm × 2 mm. commercially available aluminum, copper, mild steel and stainless steel being used as substrate. Room temperature solid particle erosion trials are carried out using a compressed air blasting type rig under impact angles of 30o, 60o and 90o. The present investigation uses an erosion apparatus of Sand Blast type. The test is conducted as per ASTMG-76 standards. It is analyzed that initially the cumulative coating mass loss increases rapidly and later on becomes almost stagnant. A transient regime in the erosion process exists, during which the incremental erosion rate decreases monotonically down to a steady state erosion rate. 展开更多

The fretting wear behavior of plasma spraying CoCrW and Cr3C2-NiCr coatings were investigated. The results showed both plasma spraying coatings were inferior to K417 nickel superalloy in the fretting wear resistance. The characterized fatigue delamination of the plasma sprayed coatings was evidently different from that of the homogeneous materials. The lamellar cohesion, oxide inclusions and porosity were critical factors that controlled the fretting wear resistance. The microstructure and wear performance of M203-13% TiO2 coatings prepared by plasma spraying of agglom- erated nanoparticle powders were investigated. SEM analysis showed that the as-sprayed Al2O3-TiO2 coatings comprise of two kinds of typical region: fully melted region and unmelted/partially melted nanostructured region, which is different than the conventional coating with lamellar structure. It is shown that the microhardness of the nanostructured coatings was about 15%-30% higher than that of the conventional coating and the wear resistance is significantly improved, especially under a high wear load. The nanostructured coating sprayed at a lower power shows a lower wear resistance than the coatings produced at a higher power, because of the presence of pores and microstructural defects which are detrimental to the fracture toughness of the coatings. 展开更多

Fe-based and Fe/Mo composite amorphous coatings were deposited on the surface of plain carbon steel substrates by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). With increasing the Mo alloy content, the microstructure of the coatings revealed more dense structure. The porosities of composite coating were all less than those of Fe-based coat- ing due to Mo alloy self-bonding performance. The ML10 friction and wear tester was employed to investigate the wear behaviors of the coatings under dry sliding conditions. It was found that the mass loss of the resultant coatings decreased with increasing Mo-based powders into the feedstock. This was attributed to the reduction of the delamina- tions resulting from improved intersplat bond with Mo addition. 展开更多

The sliding wear behaviors of ZrO2-22 wt pct MgO (MZ) and ZrO2-8 wt pct Y2O3(YZ) coatings deposited on a cast aluminum alloy with bond layer (NiCrCoAlY) by plasma spray were investigated under dry test conditions at room temperature. Under all load conditions, the wear mechanisms of the MZ and YZ coatings were almost the same. The material transfer and pullout were involved in the wear process of the studied coatings under the test conditions. The wear rate of the MZ coating was less than that of the YZ coating. While increasing the normal load, the wear rates of the MZ and YZ coatings increased. SEM was used to examine the worn surfaces and to elucidate likely wear mechanisms. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis of the worn surfaces indicated that material transfer occurred in the direction from the SiC ball to the disk. Fracture toughness had a significant influence on the wear performance of the coatings. It was suggested that the material transfer played an important role in the wear behavior. 展开更多
