A new microscopic approach was proposed, which bridges the order gap between the dislocation theory and the crystalline plasticity based on the quantum field theory of dislocations. The Ginzburg-Landau equation was derived rigorously from the quantized Hamiltonian for a crystal body containing a large number of dislocations, which gives the reaction-diffusion (RD) type differential equations. The RD equation describes periodic patterning shown in PSBs, etc.. relationship between the proposed theory and the concepts appeared in the non-Riemannian plasticity was extensively discussed by introducing the gauge field of dislocations. Plastic size effects in single crystals are investigated by using finite strain and small strain discrete dislocation plasticity to analyse the response of cantilever beam specimens. Crystals with both one and two active slip systems are analysed, as well as specimens with different beam aspect ratios. Over the range of specimen sizes analysed here, the bending stress versus applied tip displacement response has a strong hardening plastic component. This hardening rate increases with decreasing specimen size. The hardening rates are slightly lower when the finite strain discrete dislocation plasticity(DDP) formulation is employed as curving of the slip planes is accounted for in the finite strain formulation. This relaxes the back-stresses in the dislocation pile-ups and thereby reduces the hardening rate. Our calculations show that in line with the pure bending case, the bending stress in cantilever bending displays a plastic size dependence. However, unlike pure bending, the bending flow strength of the larger aspect ratio cantilever beams is appreciably smaller. This is attributed to the fact that for the same applied bending stress, longer beams have lower shear forces acting upon them and this results in a lower density of statistically stored dislocations. 展开更多

Discrete dislocation plasticity(DDP)calculations are carried out to investigate the response of a single crystal contacted by a rigid sinusoidal asperity under sliding loading conditions to look for causes of microstructure change in the dislocation structure. The mechanistic driver is identified as the development of lattice rotations and stored energy in the subsurface, which can be quantitatively correlated to recent tribological experimental observations.Maps of surface slip initiation and substrate permanent deformation obtained from DDP calculations for varying contact size and normal load suggest ways of optimally tailoring the interface and microstructural material properties for various frictional loads. 展开更多

The effects of Cu on stacking fault energy, dislocation slip, mechanical twinning, and strain hardening in Fe–20Mn–1.3C twinning-induced plasticity(TWIP) steels were systematically investigated. The stacking fault energy was raised with an average slope of 2 mJ/m2 per 1 wt% Cu.The Fe–20Mn–1.3C–3Cu steel exhibited superior tensile properties, with the ultimate tensile strength reached at 2.27 GPa and elongation up to 96.9% owing to the high strain hardening that occurred. To examine the mechanism of this high strain hardening, dislocation density determination by XRD was calculated. The dislocation density increased with the increasing strain, and the addition of Cu resulted in a decrease in the dislocation density.A comparison of the strain-hardening behavior of Fe–20Mn–1.3C and Fe–20Mn–1.3C–3Cu TWIP steels was made in terms of modified Crussard–Jaoul(C–J) analysis and microstructural observations.Especially at low strains, the contributions of all the relevant deformation mechanisms—slip, twinning, and dynamic strain aging—were quantitatively evaluated. The analysis revealed that the dislocation storage was the leading factor to the increase of the strain hardening, while dynamic strain aging was a minor contributor to strain hardening.Twinning, which interacted with the matrix, acted as an effective barrier to dislocation motion. 展开更多

A macroscopically nominal flat surface is rough at the nanoscale level and consists of nanoasperities. Therefore, the frictional properties of the macroscale-level rough surface are determined by the mechanical behaviors of nanoasperity contact pairs under shear. In this work,we first used molecular dynamics simulations to study the non-adhesive shear between single contact pairs.Subsequently,to estimate the friction coefficient of rough surfaces,we implemented the frictional behavior of a single contact pair into a Greenwood-Williamson-type statistical model.By employing the present multiscale approach,we used the size, rate, and orientation effects, which originated from nanoscale dislocation plasticity,to determine the dependence of the macroscale friction coefficient on system parameters, such as the surface roughness, separation, loading velocity, and direction. Our model predicts an unconventional dependence of the friction coefficient on the normal contact load, which has been observed in nanoscale frictional tests. Therefore, this model represents one step toward understanding some of the relevant macroscopic phenomena of surface friction at the nanoscale level. 展开更多
