Indices of heart rate variability were recorded using an Actiheart electrocardiogram recorder at 10 minutes before auricular pressing, in the first half of stimulation and in the second half of stimulation. The results revealed that the standard deviation of all normal to normal intervals and the root mean square of standard deviation of normal to normal intervals were significantly increased after stimulation. The heart rate variability triangular index, very-low-frequency power, low-frequency power, and the ratio of low-frequency to high-frequency power were increased to different degrees after stimulation. Compared with normal controls, the root mean square of standard deviation of normal to normal intervals was significantly increased in anxious students following auricular pressing. These results indicated that auricular pressing can elevate heart rate variability, especially the root mean square of standard deviation of normal to normal intervals in students with pre-exam anxiety.展开更多

However, the mechanisms of action remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To validate the effect of acupoint electro-stimulation on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) mRNA expression in the facial nucleus of rabbits with facial nerve injury, with the hypothesis that acupuncture treatment efficacy is related to BDNE DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: Peripheral facial nerve injury, in situ hybridization, and randomized, controlled, animal trial. The experiment was performed at the Laboratory of Anatomy, Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine from March to September 2005. MATERIALS: A total of 120 healthy, adult, Japanese rabbits, with an equal number of males and females were selected. Models of peripheral facial nerve injury were established using the facial nerve pressing method. METHODS: The rabbits were randomly divided into five groups (n = 24): sham operation, an incision to the left facial skin, followed by suture; model, no treatment following facial nerve model establishment; western medicine, 10 mg vitamin B1, 50 ug vitamin B12, and dexamethasone (2 mg/d, reduced to half every 7 days) intramuscular injection starting with the first day following lesion, once per day; traditional acupuncture, acupuncture at Ytfeng, Quanliao, Dicang, Jiache, Sibai, and Yangbai acupoints using a acupuncture needle with needle twirling every 10 minutes, followed by needle retention for 30 minutes, for successive 5 days; electroacupuncture, similar to the traditional acupuncture group, the Yifeng (negative electrode), Jiache (positive electrode), Dicang (negative electrode), and Sibai (positive electrode) points were connected to an universal pulse electro-therapeutic apparatus for 30 minutes per day, with disperse-dense waves for successive 5 days, and resting for 2 days. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Left hemisphere brain stem tissues were harvested on post-operative days 7, 14, 21, and 28 under a dissecting microscope. Neuronal appearance in the facial nucleus was observed following Nissl staining. BDNF mRNA expression in the facial nucleus was determined using in situ hybridization. RESULTS: A total of 120 rabbits were included in the final analysis. In the model group, the nucleolus was asymmetric with cell body swelling, and the number of Nissl bodies decreased. With increasing time, there were more Nissl bodies in the western medicine, traditional acupuncture, and electroacupuncture groups, in particular the electroacupuncture group. However, the number of Nissl bodies remained less than in the sham operation group. The number of BDNF-positive neurons in the facial nucleus was significantly greater in the western medicine, traditional acupuncture, and electroacupuncture groups, compared with the model group (P 〈 0.01). The number of BDNF-positive neurons in the facial nucleus of reached a minimum in the electroacupuncture group on post-surgery day 21, and increased by day 28, but remained less than control levels. CONCLUSION: Electroacupuncture at acupoints increased BDNF expression in the facial nucleus, alleviated neuronal injury in the facial nucleus, and promoted facial nerve regeneration. The effect was superior over traditional acupuncture and western medicine.展开更多

This White Paper is to provide the authoritative information of dry needling versus acupuncture to academic scholars, healthcare professionals, administrators, policymakers, and the general public by providing the authoritative evidence and expertise regarding critical issues of dry needling and reaching a consensus. We conclude that Dr. Travell, Dr. Gunn, Dr. Baldry and others who have promoted dry needling by simply rebranding(1) acupuncture as dry needling and(2) acupuncture points as trigger points(dry needling points). Dry needling simply using English biomedical terms(especially using "fascia" hypothesis) in replace of their equivalent Chinese medical terms. Dry needling is an over-simplified version of acupuncture derived from traditional Chinese acupuncture except for emphasis on biomedical language when treating neuromuscularskeletal pain(dry needling promoters redefined it as "myofascial pain"). Trigger points belong to the category of Ashi acupuncture points in traditional Chinese acupuncture, and they are not a new discovery. By applying acupuncture points, dry needling is actually trigger point acupuncture, an invasive therapy(a surgical procedure) instead of manual therapy. Dr. Travell admitted to the general public that dry needling is acupuncture, and acupuncture professionals practice dry needling as acupuncture therapy and there are several criteria in acupuncture profession to locate trigger points as acupuncture points. Among acupuncture schools, dry needling practitioners emphasize acupuncture's local responses while other acupuncturists pay attention to the responses of both local, distal, and whole body responses. For patients' safety, dry needling practitioners should meet standards required for licensed acupuncturists and physicians.展开更多

文摘The article introduced the application of Tuina at"Simingxue"(four points named after"ming")and pressing therapy at auricular points in treatment of 17 cases of anisometropic amblyopia in children. The methods:pressing and kneading with the thumb at Jingming(睛明BL1),Shangming(上明Extra),Yiming(翳明EX-HN14)and Guangming(光明GB37).Pressing with the finger digital at Yintang(印堂EX-HN3),Cuanzhu(攒竹BL2),Yuyao(鱼腰EX-HN4),Taiyang(太阳EX-HN5),Yingbai(阳白GB14),Sizhukong(丝竹空TE23),Tongziliao(瞳子髎GB1),Qiuhou(球后EX-HN7)and Chengqi(承泣ST1).Scraping the upper and lower orbits, nipping the eyebrows, pushing the orbits, pushing baoping and warming the eyes.Pressing Quchi(曲池LI11),Hegu(合谷LI4),GB37,Zusanli(足三里ST36),Xuehai(血海SP10)and Sanyinjiao(三阴交SP6).Rolling on the bilateral distributions of bladder meridian on the back.Pressing and kneading at Touwei(头维ST8),Qucha(曲差BL4),Baihui(百会GV20),Sishencong(四神聪EX-HN1),Fengchi(风池GB20)and Dazhui(大椎GV14).Grasping five meridians, scattering bilateral temporal regions, grasping and kneading the neck and nape region and holding Jianjing(肩井GB21).Auricular pressing therapy was exerted at Yan(眼eye,LO5),Gan(肝liver,CO12),Shen(肾kidney,CO10),Pi(脾spleen,CO13),Wei(胃stomach,CO4),Pizhixia(皮质下subcortex,AT4),Pingjianqian(屏间前anterior intertragic notch,TG21)and Pingjianhou屏间后(posterior intertragic notch,AT11).The treatment was given 3 times a week,6 treatments made one course and 4 courses of treatment were required.Of 17 patients,2 cases were cured,13 cases cured basically,1 case improved and 1 case failed. The total effective rate was 88.2%.
文摘In the United States and other Western countries, dry needling has been a topic in academic and legal fields. For patients' safety, dry needling practitioners should meet standards required for licensed acupuncturists and physicians.
