Defect engineering in transition metal oxides semiconductors(TMOs)is attracting considerable interest due to its potential to enhance conductivity by intentionally introducing defects that modulate the electronic structures of the materials. However, achieving a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between micro-structures and electromagnetic wave absorption capabilities remains elusive, posing a substantial challenge to the advancement of TMOs absorbers. The current research describes a process for the deposition of a MoO_(3)layer onto SiC nanowires, achieved via electro-deposition followed by high-temperature calcination.Subsequently, intentional creation of oxygen vacancies within the MoO_(3)layer was carried out, facilitating the precise adjustment of electromagnetic properties to enhance the microwave absorption performance of the material.Remarkably, the SiC@MO-t4 sample exhibited an excellent minimum reflection loss of-50.49 dB at a matching thickness of 1.27 mm.Furthermore, the SiC@MO-t6 sample exhibited an effective absorption bandwidth of 8.72 GHz with a thickness of 2.81 mm,comprehensively covering the entire Ku band. These results not only highlight the pivotal role of defect engineering in the nuanced adjustment of electromagnetic properties but also provide valuable insight for the application of defect engineering methods in broadening the spectrum of electromagnetic wave absor ption effectiveness.SiC@MO-t samples with varying concentrations of oxygen vacancies were prepared through in-situ etching of the SiC@MoO_(3)nanocomposite.The presence of oxygen vacancies plays a crucial role in adjusting the band gap and local electron distribution, which in turn enhances conductivity loss and induced polarization loss capacity. This finding reveals a novel strategy for improving the absorption properties of electromagnetic waves through defect engineering. 展开更多

In mineral exploration, the apparent resistivity and apparent frequency (or apparent polarizability) parameters of induced polarization method are commonly utilized to describe the induced polarization anomaly. When the target geology structure is significantly complicated, these parameters would fail to reflect the nature of the anomaly source, and wrong conclusions may be obtained. A wavelet approach and a metal factor method were used to comprehensively interpret the induced polarization anomaly of complex geologic bodies in the Adi Bladia mine. Db5 wavelet basis was used to conduct two-scale decomposition and reconstruction, which effectively suppress the noise interference of greenschist facies regional metamorphism and magma intrusion, making energy concentrated and boundary problem unobservable. On the basis of that, the ore-induced anomaly was effectively extracted by the metal factor method. 展开更多

The conventional finite-element(FE) method often uses a structured mesh, which is designed according to the user’s experience, and it is not sufficiently accurate and flexible to accommodate complex structures such as dipping interfaces and rough topography. We present an adaptive FE method for 2.5D forward modeling of induced polarization(IP). In the presented method, an unstructured triangulation mesh that allows for local mesh refinement and flexible description of arbitrary model geometries is used. Furthermore, the mesh refinement process is guided by dual error estimate weighting to bias the refinement towards elements that affect the solution at the receiver locations. After the final mesh is generated, the Jacobian matrix is used to obtain the IP response on 2D structure models. We validate the adaptive FE algorithm using a vertical contact model. The validation shows that the elements near the receivers are highly refined and the average relative error of the potentials converges to 0.4 % and 1.2 % for the IP response. This suggests that the numerical solution of the adaptive FE algorithm converges to an accurate solution with the refined mesh. Finally, the accuracy and flexibility of the adaptive FE procedure are also validated using more complex models. 展开更多

Traditional two-dimensional(2D) complex resistivity forward modeling is based on Poisson's equation but spectral induced polarization(SIP) data are the coproducts of the induced polarization(IP) and the electromagnetic induction(EMI) effects. This is especially true under high frequencies, where the EMI effect can exceed the IP effect.2D inversion that only considers the IP effect reduces the reliability of the inversion data.In this paper,we derive differential equations using Maxwell's equations. With the introduction of the Cole-Cole model,we use the finite-element method to conduct2 D SIP forward modeling that considers the EMI and IP effects simultaneously. The data-space Occam method,in which different constraints to the model smoothness and parametric boundaries are introduced,is then used to simultaneously obtain the four parameters of the Cole-Cole model using multi-array electric field data. This approach not only improves the stability of the inversion but also significantly reduces the solution ambiguity. To improve the computational efficiency, message passing interface programming was used to accelerate the 2D SIP forward modeling and inversion.Synthetic datasets were tested using both serial and parallel algorithms, and the tests suggest that the proposed parallel algorithm is robust and efficient. 展开更多

Based on an analytical solution for the current point source in an anisotropic half-space,we study the apparent resistivity and apparent chargeability of a transversely isotropic medium with vertical and horizontal axes symmetry, respectively. We then provide a simple derivation of the anisotropy paradoxes in direct current resistivity and time-domain induced polarization methods.Analogous to the mean resistivity,we propose a formulation for deriving the mean polarizability. We also present a three-dimensional finite element algorithm for modeling the direct current resistivity and time-domain induced polarization using an unstructured tetrahedral grid. Finally,we provide the apparent resistivity and apparent chargeability curves of a tilted, transversely isotropic medium with diff erent angles, respectively. The subsequent results illustrate the anisotropy paradoxes of direct current resistivity and time-domain induced polarization. 展开更多

Sulfide minerals are a group of compounds with the presence of sulfur. This group’s most abundant and economically members are pyrites, pyrrhotite, chalcocite, galena, sphalerite, and the group of copper sulfides minerals. Resistivity and Induced Polarization (IP) methods, which play an essential role in mineral exploration, showed great success in sulfide exploration. This paper started on reviewing sulfide formation by giving details which help to understand their genesis better. To make the reader understand the procedures and appropriate mineral exploration methods, we have briefly covered the theory, the basic principles of resistivity and IP methods, and different investigation techniques using one, two, and three-dimensional surveys. Based on many electrical surveys, we discussed with examples of resistivity and IP methods applied to the exploration of sulfide deposits: the data inversion and interpretation of the geophysical signatures of most of the sulfide deposits in various geological environments were analyzed and end by showing both successful surveys and limitations of the methods. 展开更多

Spectral induced polarization(SIP)and bender element(BE)techniques show a high sensitivity to particle size, particle distribution and content of generated hydration products, which essentially govern the efficiency of ground improvement. In this context, both SIP and BE were integrated on a column setup to monitor the processes of lime and cement stabilization.A 5 mmol/L Na2CO3 solution was injected into the sand-lime mixture to produce CaCO3 precipitation, while deionized water was injected into the sandcement mixture to induce the hydration of cement. The average diameters of the precipitated particles or clusters were calculated from the relaxation time, which was a significant parameter of SIP signals, via the Schwarz equation. Two pairs of BE were used to demonstrate the heterogeneity of the product precipitation, which was probably caused by the location of the inflow and outflow on the SIP-BE column.SIP and BE showed the capability of nondestructively monitoring the spatiotemporal chemical evolution processes, which could be helpful for engineering applications. 展开更多

This paper centers on the investigation of the subsurface condition of Bayero University Kano Permanent Site with the aim of understanding the lithology and also mapping out the groundwater patterns within the area. To achieve this, time domain IP (induced polarization) and SP (self-potential) methods were adopted using VES (vertical electrical sounding) technique with 49 stations sounded. The result of the interpreted and analyzed measured data shows that the area is underlain by two to five subsurface layers. These layers are top soil, laterite, weathered basement complex rocks, fractured basement complex rocks and fresh basement complex rocks. The aquiferous zone of the study area occurs in the weathered and fractured basements and its thickness ranges from 1.44 m to 70.157 m while the overburden thickness lies between 1.6 m and 72.104 m. SP values were plotted against depths of investigation in order to identify areas with greater depth of flow in the study area. From the analysis of the overburden thickness, aquifer thickness and SP values, the most favorable regions for groundwater exploitation were found around VES 6, 11, 13, 19, 26, 38, 44 and 48. The investigation also provides information about the subsurface condition with regards to engineering construction and safe place for refuse dumping in order to avoid groundwater contamination. 展开更多

Elliptically polarized light is generated by wave plate placed in the feedback cavity. By analyzing the amplitude and phase of the laser output in the orthogonal direction, some new phenomena are firstly discovered and explained theoretically.Elliptically polarized feedback light is amplified in the gain medium in the resonator, and the direction perpendicular to the original polarization direction is easiest to oscillate. The laser intensity variation in amplitude and phase are related to the amplified mode and the anisotropy of external cavity. The theoretical analysis and experimental results agree well. Because the output characteristic of the laser has a relationship with the anisotropy of the external cavity, the phenomenon also provides a method for measuring birefringence. 展开更多

Determination of rock mechanical parameters is the most important step in rock mass quality evaluation and has significant impacts on geotechnical engineering practice.Rock mass integrity coefficient(KV)is one of the most efficient parameters, which is conventionally determined from boreholes.Such approaches, however, are time-consuming and expensive, offer low data coverage of point measurements, require heavy equipment, and are hardly conducted in steep topographic sites.Hence, borehole approaches cannot assess the subsurface thoroughly for rock mass quality evaluation.Alternatively, use of geophysical methods is non-invasive,rapid and economical. The proposed geophysical approach makes useful empirical correlation between geophysical and geotechnical parameters. We evaluated the rock mass quality via integration between KV measured from the limited boreholes and inverted resistivity obtained from electrical resistivity tomography(ERT).The borehole-ERT correlation provided KV along various geophysical profiles for more detailed 2D/3D(two-/three-dimensional)mapping of rock mass quality. The subsurface was thoroughly evaluated for rock masses with different engineering qualities, including highly weathered rock,semi-weathered rock, and fresh rock.Furthermore,ERT was integrated with induced polarization(IP)to resolve the uncertainty caused by water/clay content. Our results show that the proposed method, compared with the conventional approaches, can reduce the ambiguities caused by inadequate data, and give more accurate insights into the subsurface for rock mass quality evaluation. 展开更多

The investigated study area locates about 72 km from Jeddah City, Makkah District, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The study mainly aimed to define the most significant zones of possible mineralization and outline their subsurface parameters (location and strike) in the southeast of Jabal Al-Qashah. Several geophysical methods have been conducted to carry out the goal, including ground magnetic, self-potential (SP), and induced polarization (IP) methods. Integrating these methods aims to help delineate the possible mineralization in the study area. The magnetic survey was conducted along 17 profiles where these profiles were chosen to be perpendicular to the strike of the quartz shear zone. Self-potential was applied along with five profiles covering the study area. At the same time, induced polarization was used along with one profile located at the western side of the study area corresponding to some magnetic and SP profiles. The most interesting zones of mineralization were successfully determined by comparing the results of residual magnetic profile (3), SP profile (1), and IP profile, where geological structures control some mineralization. 展开更多

In an effort to reduce the shale gas exploration risks and costs, we applied the wide-field electromagnetic method (WFEM), because of its strong anti-interference capability, high resolution, ability to conduct exploration at large depths, and high efficiency, to the Bayan Syncline in the South Huayuan block, Hunan Province. We collected rock samples and analyzed their resistivity and induced polarization (IP) and built A series of two-dimensional models for geological conditions to investigate the applicability of WFEM to different geological structures. We also analyzed the correlation between TOC of shale and the resistivity and IP ratio to determine the threshold for identifying target formations. We used WFEM to identify the underground structures and determine the distribution, depth, and thickness of the target strata. Resistivity, IP, and total organic carbon were used to evaluate the shale gas prospects and select favorable areas (sweet spots) for exploration and development. Subsequently, drilling in these areas proved the applicability of WFEM in shale gas exploration. 展开更多

Due to the induced polarization(IP)eff ect,the sign reversal often occurs in timedomain airborne electromagnetic(AEM)data. The inversions that do not consider IP eff ect cannot recover the true umderground electrical structures. In view of the fact that there are many parameters of airborne induced polarization data in time domain, and the sensitivity diff erence between parameters is large, which brings challenges to the stability and accuracy of the inversion. In this paper,we propose an inversion mehtod for time-domain AEM data with IP effect based on the Pearson correlation constraints. This method uses the Pearson correlation coeffi cient in statistics to characterize the correlation between the resistivity and the chargeability and constructs the Pearson correlation constraints for inverting the objective function to reduce the non uniqueness of inversion. To verify the eff ectiveness of this method,we perform both Occam’s inversion and Pearson correlation constrained inversion on the synthetic data. The experiments show that the Pearson correlation constrained inverison is more accurate and stable than the Occam’s inversion. Finally,we carried out the inversion to a survey dataset with and without IP eff ect.The results show that the data misfit and the continuity of the inverted section are greatly improved when the IP eff ect is considered. 展开更多

The study of induced polarization (IP) information extraction from magnetotelluric (MT) sounding data is of great and practical significance to the exploitation of deep mineral, oil and gas resources. The linear inversion method, which has been given priority in previous research on the IP information extraction method, has three main problems as follows: 1) dependency on the initial model, 2) easily falling into the local minimum, and 3) serious non-uniqueness of solutions. Taking the nonlinearity and nonconvexity of IP information extraction into consideration, a two-stage CO-PSO minimum structure inversion method using compute unified distributed architecture (CUDA) is proposed. On one hand, a novel Cauchy oscillation particle swarm optimization (CO-PSO) algorithm is applied to extract nonlinear IP information from MT sounding data, which is implemented as a parallel algorithm within CUDA computing architecture; on the other hand, the impact of the polarizability on the observation data is strengthened by introducing a second stage inversion process, and the regularization parameter is applied in the fitness function of PSO algorithm to solve the problem of multi-solution in inversion. The inversion simulation results of polarization layers in different strata of various geoelectric models show that the smooth models of resistivity and IP parameters can be obtained by the proposed algorithm, the results of which are relatively stable and accurate. The experiment results added with noise indicate that this method is robust to Gaussian white noise. Compared with the traditional PSO and GA algorithm, the proposed algorithm has more efficiency and better inversion results. 展开更多

Reversible solid oxide cells(SOCs)are very efficient and clean for storage and regeneration of renewable electrical energy by switching between electrolysis and fuel cell modes. One of the most critical factors governing the efficiency and durability of SOCs technology is the stability of the interface between oxygen electrode and electrolyte, which is conventionally formed by sintering at a high temperature of~1000–1250℃,and which suffers from delamination problem, particularly for reversibly operated SOCs.On the other hand, our recent studies have shown that the electrode/electrolyte interface can be in situ formed by a direct assembly approach under the electrochemical polarization conditions at 800℃and lower. The direct assembly approach provides opportunities for significantly simplifying the cell fabrication procedures without the doped ceria barrier layer, enabling the utilization of a variety of high-performance oxygen electrode materials on barrier layer–free yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ)electrolyte. Most importantly, the in situ polarization induced interface shows a promising potential as highly active and durable interface for reversible SOCs.The objective of this progress report is to take an overview of the origin and research progress of in situ fabrication of oxygen electrodes based on the direct assembly approach. The prospect of direct assembly approach in the development of effective SOCs and in the fundamental studies of electrode/electrolyte interface reactions is discussed. 展开更多

A theoretical investigation is presented on the characteristics of the kinetic magnetoelectric effect in laterally boundary-confined ballistic two-dimensional hole gases. It was shown that, though the momentum-dependent effective magnetic fields felt by charge carriers due to the spin-orbit interaction are in-plane orientated in such systems, both in-plane polarized and normal polarized nonequilibrium spin polarization densities could be electrically induced by the kinetic magnetoelectric effect, and the induced nonequilibrium spin polarizations exhibit some interesting characteristics. The characteristics we found indicate that there may be some possible relation between this effect and some recent experimental findings. 展开更多
