The Research on Cross-Cultural Critical Thinking in English Teaching: A Pedagogical Paradigm Within the Ideological and Political Course Framework

The conflation of linguistic competencies with ideological and political educational paradigms presents unique opportunities and challenges for English language teaching(ELT)in our increasingly interconnected world.This research seeks to address the role of cross-cultural critical thinking within the landscape of English pedagogy,framed by the imperatives of ideological and political education.Employing a multi-method approach,including thematic content analysis and action research,the study proposes a pedagogical model designed to integrate transcultural discourse and ideologically reflective practices into the conventional ELT curriculum.This paper argues for a reimagined approach to teaching English that encourages students to engage with diverse cultural perspectives and develop a nuanced understanding of global issues.

A Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis of Lingnan Cultural Promotional Videos on Social Media

In recent years,more and more directors of culture and tourism have taken part in the promotion of local cultural tourism by cross-dressing,talent shows,and pushing their limits on self-media platforms.This study investigates short videos of Lingnan culture promoted by directors general and deputy directors general of the Culture,Radio,Television,Tourism,and Sports Bureau of counties and cities in Guangdong Province on social media by the method of multimodal critical discourse analysis.The analysis of 33 videos shows that Lingnan culture is a domineering and confident culture,historical culture,graceful and elegant culture,and vibrant and active culture.Domineering and confident culture is embedded in the utterances and behaviors of the directors general or deputy directors general in the video.Historical culture is realized through the conversation with historical figures through time travel.Graceful and elegant culture is constructed in the depiction of sceneries and the depiction of characters’manners.Vibrant and active culture is represented in the depiction of the characters’actional process and analytical process.

Discussion about contemporary Chinese cultural criticism and mass culture

Contemporary Chinese cultural criticism is facing traditional three factors. Henry James is one of the most important novelists and critics in British and American literature. He spent much of his youth in plenty of European countries where he studied with tutors and governesses. Since the 1980 s, more and more Western critics have started to use various critical theories such as political sociology, gender identity, and racial discrimination to study his novels.The author attempts to analyze The Turn of the Screw from cultural criticism. Cultural Criticism is not an independent theory. It is often interwoven with social, political, psychological, and historical contexts of a novel. The author first uses political sociology to analyze class division and power structure of the Victorian time. And then use social psychology to analyze the psyche of the governess and proves that it is the governess' sexual hysteria that leads to the fall of the two children.The author argues that Cultural Criticism seems to be a more suitable and effective way to analyze the story.

Chinese Western Cultural Relations＂ A Critical Analysis

This study, within the theoretical framework of Critical Discourse Analysis, aims to explore how culture represents language, causing cultural differences between the East and the West. With a set of questions, a qualitative method is employed to collect the data in this study. By examining the 189 theoretical studies and investigating cultural and linguistic features, this study will show how culture influences culture and language, while the content analysis is completely excluded due to the limited time and space. The data will be analyzed in light of the critical discourse analysis showing how social subjects are constructed in various discourses with their personal terms. A historical change between the East and the West is the return of the ancient Silk Roads at the early 21st century. Social changes can be seen when studying their cultural relations. Language is easily abstracted from culture. Both claim special reality of what they are. This article clearly explains how the discourse in the Chinese Western cultural relations generally reflects the social practice, the ideology, and power relations in social structures in which various discourses were published at the time of reporting. Finally, English and Chinese belong to two different language families representing linguistic differences. This makes learning English a serious challenge for Chinese native speakers.

Is It Really Worth Advocating?—Criticism and Teaching Reflection on Roberto Guzman’s Teaching English without Teaching English

This paper critically analyzes Roberto Guzman’s approach to teaching English, as outlined in his TED talk “Teaching English without Teaching English”. While Guzman focuses on inspirational teaching and open-ended discussion, the analysis highlights some shortcomings of his methods from three perspectives: 1) whether the approach aligns with socio-cultural theories, 2) whether it overlooks the importance of input assumptions, and 3) whether it can effectively improve students’ communicative competence. Through this analysis, the paper sheds light on the potential limitations of Guzman’s approach to teaching English and provides insights into how educators can design more effective language teaching methods.

Cross-Cultural Composition： Seeing Ourselves and Seeing Others

This paper is a description of a writing course that was designed and implemented to provide first year composition students from two cultures and two countries the opportunity to partner together on writing assignments. The purpose is to explore home culture and target culture issues. This qualitative study is based on the premise that assignments which encourage critical thinking and metacognitive analysis about culture enhance cross-cultural understanding, breakdown ethnic stereotypes, and provide opportunities for students to understand the benefits of cultural diversity first hand. Success of breaking down cultural barriers was limited, but promising for future endeavors.

A Variety of Cultures Represented in English Language Textbooks： A Critical Study at Saudi University

Textbooks material is one of the important issues that are worthy to investigate in order to enrich student＇s engagement and interaction in EFL （English as a Foreign Language） classrooms. In this study, the author argues that textbooks materials used in academic institutions may well take a significant part in generating an active environment in EEL classrooms. It is believed that more opportunities will be created for students to be more involved, active, and able to understand the content being addressed more effectively. Yet, by looking at the textbooks being utilised （at a university context where the author teaches）, one can notice that student＇s culture （Eastern） is to a large extent missing in these textbooks, most of these books instead represent dominantly ＂Western＂ culture namely American and British cultures. This can deafly be depicted by topics discussed, pictures, clothing, names, and many other issues portrayed in these textbooks. This study is an attempt to challenge and problematize such domination of Western cultures portrayed in the content of English textbooks used in academic institutions not merely within Saudi Arabia but also extended to other countries and nations in the world.

中国文化“译出”路径下翻译立场的阐释

中国文化外译渐成主流之势,中国文化“译出”路径是一种客观存在。本文基于翻译立场概念特征及其研究现状的考察,以中国文化“译入”“译出”路径下翻译立场的差异为立足点,肯定中国文化“译入”路径对传播中国文化的价值,同时强调中国文化“译出”路径下翻译立场表达的必要性和现实性。在此基础上,从内涵特征和实现途径两方面阐释中国文化“译出”路径下的翻译立场表达。在内涵特征上,体现译者翻译立场与国家翻译立场的共场,以及动态多维的翻译批评新体系的构建;在实现途径上,倡导以“中国译者为主,外语译者为辅”的中西合作译者模式,塑造以“走进去”为导向的翻译价值观,以“异化—归化”连续统策略指导中译外翻译实践。

城市工业废弃地再利用项目的溢出效应评价——基于改进的CRITIC-熵权赋权法

工业废弃地作为阻碍城市绿色发展的关键因素之一,对我国生态环境、土地资源、城市空间肌理等多方面均产生较大程度的破坏与浪费。对工业废弃地再利用项目体现出的各项溢出效应进行科学的分析与评价,有助于管理者正确认识项目的实际质量以及应重点关注的指标因素,有助于推动我国工业废弃地的再利用进程,并为同类项目溢出效应的评价和生态补偿提供参考依据。针对工业废弃地再利用项目的溢出效应评价,本文共识别文化、社会、经济以及生态四类溢出效应以及21项三级指标。为缩小现象性异常评价信息对项目溢出效应评价的影响,设置调节系数对CRITIC-熵权赋权法进行改进,并将其与工业废弃地再利用项目溢出效应评价模型进行融合。结合山东淄博1954陶瓷文化创意园案例,对新构建的溢出效应评价模型进行运用与分析,结果显示:(1)改进后的CRITIC-熵权赋权法可有效消除现象性异常信息对指标赋权的影响;(2)文化、社会以及生态溢出效应之间具有较强的正相关关系,而三者与经济溢出效应之间具有负相关关系;(3)管理者在该类项目的改造与运营中应重点关注公共交通便捷度、传统工艺传承情况以及产品、名人或历史事件对社会的影响程度这三项指标对项目综合溢出效应的影响。

To Write Self and World with Fun——Culture Mode in L2 Writing

The English writing is a fundamental and critical skill for English learners who they perform disatisfactorily in both classrooms and national writing tests. Culture Mode is hereby proposed The mode proposed is consisted of two parts: the compilation of reading materials and the reform of teaching process. An action research is conducted and interview is held to explore the efficacy of it to stimulate the students' interests in writing by reading crossculturally, to develop their writing skills by recording their daily life or their observation of the society, to cultivate their critical thinking by writing responses after each session of practice.

Constructing a New Polish Architecture： Critical Regionalism and Resistance to Globalization after 1989

This paper explores the critical regionalism which could play a role in the continued development of global era Polish architecture, and the advancements achieved by those few contemporary Polish architects who have sought to combine modern tastes and techniques with culturally meaningful designs. The new culture of Poland is very much reflected in the design of many of its new buildings that have been completed since the political and economic changes in 1989. The architecture of Poland appears to have lurched from an inappropriate socialist modernism that was so horridly imposed during the communist era to an equally inappropriate post modernist hegemony in the new enterprise culture. In accordance with Poland, now is rejection of the centrally imposed system of building and architecture, and with the greater emphasis on individual initiative in the new culture, it seems a pity that the country should automatically adopt western modes of architectural expression. This paper suggests that with its newly founded freedom, Poland should be careful that it does not suffer a loss of identity and that, in its architecture, it should seek a way forward through a critical regionalism.
