The steel had undergone 5 passes controlled rolling, then was relaxed lair cooled) to 730 degreesC: and cooled in water. The evolution of microstructure was that, in early stage of tempering, no obvious change was detected by means of optical microscopy while dislocation cells were formed inside bainitic laths. With further tempering, bainitic laths started to coalesce in some regions. Finally, polygonal ferrite was formed while hardness decreased dramatically. Some samples taken from the same primary plate were reheated at 930 degreesC for 0.5 h followed by quenching into water before tempering. Despite their lower original hardness, the reheated samples softened Faster during tempering. Ferrite was quickly formed in the reheated samples. These results indicate that the evolution of microstructures towards equilibrium during tempering of the steel is mainly determined by whether dislocations are pinned rather than the dislocation density.展开更多

In this study, we have gained deeper insights on the mechanism underlying the microstructural evolution during tempering treatment, including the precipitation of carbides and the coarsening of martensite laths, as systematically analyzed by optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron mi- croscopy. The chemical composition of the precipitates was analyzed using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Results indicate the for- mation of M3C (cementite) precipitates under normalized conditions. However, they tend to dissolve within a short time of tempering, owing to their low thermal stability. This phenomenon was substantiated by X-ray diffraction analysis. Besides, we could observe the precipitation of fine carbonitrides (MX) along the dislocations. The mechanism of carbon diffusion controlled growth of M23C6 can be expressed by the Zener's equation. The movement of Y-junctions was determined to be the fundamental mechanism underlying the martensite lath coarsening process. Vickers hardness was estimated to determine their mechanical properties. Based on the comprehensive analysis of both the micro- structural evolution and hardness variation, the process of tempering can be separated into three steps.展开更多

The results show that the microstructure of X80 steel tempered at 550 ℃ and 600 ℃ is bainitic ferrite (BF)+granular bainite (GB), and partial ferrite laths in BF merge and broaden. The interior sub-lath boundary of some GB begins to disappear due to merging, the M/A constituent (a mixture of martensite plus retained austenite) in GB is orbicular. At the two tempering temperatures the tested X80 steel shows a certain degree of tempering stability. After being tempered at 650 ℃, the microstructure of X80 steel is GB+quasi-polygonal ferrite(QF), and the original BF laths have merged to form smaller GB crystal grains. The reason is that the steel shows better match of strength and toughness. After being tempered at 700 ℃ , the microstructure of X80 steel is composed mainly of QF, which can improve the plasticity but decline severely the yield strength of X80, and the M/A constituent assembles and grows up at the grain boundary of QF, resulting in excellent lower low-temperature toughness of X80.展开更多

Both dilatometer tests and TEM observations revealed that DM steel has a higher tempering stability than H21 and H13 steels because of its substantial amount of M_2C(M represents metallic element) carbide precipitations. The activation energies of the M_2C carbide precipitation processes in DM, H21, and H13 steels are 236.4, 212.0, and 228.9 kJ/mol, respectively. Furthermore, the results indicated that vanadium atoms both increase the activation energy and affect the evolution of M_2C carbides, resulting in gradual dissolution rather than over-aging during tempering.展开更多

The steel was quenched at 1150℃ and tempered at 520℃. The phase structures of the steel were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the hardness of specimens was measured. The volume fraction of carbides was counted by Image-Pro Plus software. The typical microstructures were observed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). Stable and meta-stable carbides were deduced by removing the existing phases one by one in the Fe-C equilibrium calculation. It is found that the precipitated carbides are bulk-like MC, long stripe-like M2C, fishbone-like M6C, and daisy-like M7C3 during the tempering process. The stable carbides are MC and M6C, but the meta-stable ones are M2C, M7C3, and M3C.展开更多

文摘The tempering stability of three Fe–Cr–Mo–W–V hot forging die steels(DM, H21, and H13) was investigated through hardness measurements and transmission electron microscopy(TEM) observations. Furthermore, the results indicated that vanadium atoms both increase the activation energy and affect the evolution of M_2C carbides, resulting in gradual dissolution rather than over-aging during tempering.
文摘In order to obtain the desired mechanical properties of quenching and tempering workpieces, as well as reduce the cracking tendency and distortion, a program of controllable quenching was established. Furthermore, a computer-aided quenching system (CAQ) was also developed. The application samples of the CAQ system showed satisfactory results.
文摘In this paper, the kinetics and creeping behavior in the tempering of were experimentally investigated in detail with two kinds of large-forging steel. The martensitic and bainitic transformations were expressed as functions of the tempering parameter. The kinetics of phase transformation of the retained austenite was described by the Avrami equation. Based on the elastoplastic-creeping theory, the constitutive relations for steel tempering process were obtained, and an FEM code was developed. The program was verified with the tempering process of a cylindrical specimen, and the quenching-tempering process of a turbine rotator was analyzed.

文摘A high speed steel (HSS) was studied for rollers in this work. The stable carbides are MC and M6C, but the meta-stable ones are M2C, M7C3, and M3C.
文摘The temper embrittlement of Fe-2%Mn-Sb-Ce structure steels was studied by measurements of the ductile-brittle transition temperature and observations by AES and SEM of the fracture surface of isothermally embrittle steel. It shows that Sb and Mn can produce non-equilibrium co-segregation to grain boundaries and bring about the temper embrittlement of Fe-2%Mn-Sb-Ce structure steels. Cerium may reduce the temper embrittlement of the steels and the segregation of cerium to grain boundaries may play an important part in reducing the temper embrittlement of the steels.
文摘Through the differentiating and integrating process, a mathematical model for tempering time effect on quenched steel was derived based on the attribute of state function and the general equation of Hollomon parameter, which correlates the tempering hardness with the tempering time at different tempering temperature. Using the established model, the linear relationship between the tempering hardness and the tempering time in logarithm was proved theoretically, and the tempering hardness for various tempering time was reduced to the measurement and calculation of a hardness experiment tempered for 1 h at different tempering temperatures. Moreover, the hardness of steel 42CrMo and T8Mn tempered for various times at 200-600℃ was calculated using this method. The predicted results are in good agreement with those of the available experiments.
文摘The effect of different tempering temperatures on the microstructure and mechanical properties of airquenched high boron white cast iron was studied. The results indicate that the high boron white cast iron comprises dendritic matrix and inter-dendritic M 2 B boride;and the matrix comprises martensite and pearlite. After quenching in the air,the matrix is changed into lath martensite;but only 1-μm-size second phase exists in the matrix. After tempering, another second phase of several tens of nanometers is found in the matrix, and the size and quantity increase with an increase in tempering temperature. The two kinds of second precipitation phase with different sizes in the matrix have the same chemical formula, but their forming stages are different. The precipitation phase with larger size forms during the austenitizing process, while the precipitation phase with smaller size forms during the tempering process. When tempered at different temperatures after quenching, the hardness decreases with an increase in the tempering temperature, but it increases a little at 450 ℃ due to the precipitation strengthening effect of the second phase, and it decreases greatly due to the martensite decomposition above 450 ℃.The impact toughness increases a little when tempered below 300 ℃,but it then decreases continuously owing to the increase in size and quantity of the secondary precipitate above 300 ℃.Considered comprehensively, the optimum tempering temperature is suggested at 300 ℃ to obtain a good combination of hardness and toughness.
文摘The structure and properties of high chromium white cast iron in different treatment states were studied. Using X ray diffraction method, observing their metallograph and measuring their microhardness, the phases involved in the iron were determined. The notch toughness, macrohardness and the fractograph of the samples are compared and their performance was determined, which mainly depends on the matrix structure. Relatively good comprehensive properties can be obtained in the tempering state. Improvements have been made on the commonly used tempering standard. Tempering for a short period at low temperature can improve the materials′ service performance obviously.
