Despite great technological advances, our current societies still experience great spatial disparity in urban forest access. Urban Heat Island Effects are measurable phenomenon that are being experienced by the world’s most urbanized areas, including increased summer high temperatures and lower evapotranspiration from having impervious surfaces instead of vegetation and trees. Tree canopy cover is our natural mitigation tool that absorbs sunlight for photosynthesis, protects humans from incoming radiation, and releases cooling moisture into the air. Unfortunately, urban areas typically have low levels of vegetation. Vulnerable urban communities are lower-income areas of inner cities with less access to heat protection like air conditioners. This study uses mean evapotranspiration levels to assess the variability of urban heat island effects across the state of Tennessee. Results show that increased developed land surface cover in Tennessee creates measurable changes in atmospheric evapotranspiration. As a result, the mean evapotranspiration levels in areas with less tree vegetation are significantly lower than the surrounding forested areas. Central areas of urban cities in Tennessee had lower mean evapotranspiration recordings than surrounding areas with less development. This work demonstrates the need for increased tree canopy coverage.展开更多

In this study, the authors put forward a systematic solution for this problem. Databases from the World Stress Map and the Crustal Stress of China, and previous research findings can offer prediction of stress orientations in an engineering area. At the same time, the Andersonian theory can be used to analyze the possible stress orientation of a region. With limited in-situ stress measurements, the Hock-Brown Criterion can be used to estimate the strength of rock mass in an area of interest by utilizing the geotechnical investigation data, and the modified Sheorey's model can subsequently be employed to predict the areas' stress profile, without stress data, by taking the existing in-situ stress measurements as input parameters. In this paper, a case study was used to demonstrate the application of this systematic solution. The planned Kohala hydropower plant is located on the western edge of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Three hydro-fracturing stress measurement campaigns indicated that the stress state of the area is SH - Sh 〉 Sv or SH 〉Sv 〉 Sh. The measured orientation of Sn is NEE (N70.3°-89°E), and the regional orientation of SH from WSM is NE, which implies that the stress orientation of shallow crust may be affected by landforms. The modified Sheorey model was utilized to predict the stress profile along the water sewage tunnel for the plant. Prediction results show that the maximum and minimum horizontal principal stres- ses of the points with the greatest burial depth were up to 56.70 and 40.14 MPa, respectively, and the stresses of areas with a burial depth of greater than 500 m were higher. Based on the predicted stress data, large deformations of the rock mass surrounding water conveyance tunnels were analyzed. Results showed that the large deformations will occur when the burial depth exceeds 300 m. When the burial depth is beyond 800 m, serious squeezing deformations will occur in the surrounding rock masses, thus requiring more attention in the design and construction. Based on the application efficiency in this case study, this prediction method proposed in this paper functions accurately.展开更多

Seismic residual deformations of typical caisson quay walls under different engineering situations are analyzed in detail by the plastic model, and then an index of liquefaction extent is applied to describe the regularity of seismic residual deformation of caisson quay wall top under different engineering situations. Some correlated prediction formulas are derived from the results of regression analysis between seismic residual deformation of quay wall top and extent of liquefaction in the relative safety backfill sand site. Finally, the rationality and the reliability of the prediction methods are validated by test results of a 120 g-centrifuge shaking table, and the comparisons show that some reliable seismic residual deformation of caisson quay can be predicted by appropriate prediction formulas and appropriate index of liquefaction extent.展开更多

The characteristics of the hardened surface depend on the physicochemical properties of the material as well as the heating system parameters. To exploit the benefits presented by the laser hardening process, it is necessary to develop an integrated strategy to control the process parameters in order to produce desired hardened surface attributes without being forced to use the traditional and fastidious trial and error procedures. This study presents a comprehensive modelling approach for predicting the hardened surface physical and geometrical attributes. The laser surface transformation hardening of cylindrical AISI 4340 steel workpieces is modeled using the conventional regression equation method as well as artificial neural network method. The process parameters included in the study are laser power, beam scanning speed, and the workpiece rotational speed. The upper and the lower limits for each parameter are chosen considering the start of the transformation hardening and the maximum hardened zone without surface melting. The resulting models are able to predict the depths representing the maximum hardness zone, the hardness drop zone, and the overheated zone without martensite transformation. Because of its ability to model highly nonlinear problems, the ANN based model presents the best modelling results and can predict the hardness profile with good accuracy.展开更多

However, predictive models presented by initial research are normally based on traditional solid mechanics, and thus cannot predict coating performance accurately. Also, the high computational costs that originate from the exclusive structure of surface coating systems (a big difference in the order of coating and substrate) are not well addressed by these models. To fill the needs for accurate prediction and low computational costs, a multi-axial continuum damage mechanics (CDM)-based constitutive model is introduced for the investigation of the load bearing capacity and fracture properties of coatings. Material parameters within the proposed constitutive model are determined for a typical coating (TIN) and substrate (Cu) system. An efficient numerical subroutine is developed to implement the determined constitutive model into the commercial FE solver, ABAQUS, through the user-defined subroutine, VUMAT. By changing the geometrical sizes of FE models, a series of computations are carried out to investigate (1) loading features, (2) stress distributions, and (3) failure features of the coating system. The results show that there is a critical displacement corresponding to each FE model size, and only if the applied normal loading displacement is smaller than the critical displacement, a reasonable prediction can be achieved. Finally, a 3D map of the critical displacement is generated to provide guidance for users to determine an FE model with suitable geometrical size for surface coating simulations. This paper presents an effective modelling approach for the prediction of mechanical performance of surface coatings.展开更多

The solution scheme of the Lagrange multiplier, which makes the top surface-deformation equation be coupled with that for the bottomsurface of a single weld pool, is given out. Through numerical analysis of weld pool surface-deformation in GTA W, it is found that there is clear correlation between the penetration extent and the Lagrange multiplier, in addition to the relationship between the penetration extent and the maximum depression and hump as well as the depressed volume of the top surface of weld pool. It lays good foundation for top-side sensing based weld penetration control.展开更多

For this purpose the wind field at a level under consideration is taken in the ratio form with that of 850 hPa level and the coefficients of the double Fouricr series are computed. These coefficients are subsequently used to computethe winds which are compared with the actual winds. The results of the double Fourier series technique are comparedwith those of the polynomial surface fitting method developed by Bavadekar and Khaladkar (1 992). The technique isalso applied for the daily wind data of 11. June, 1979 and the validation of the technique is tested for a few radiosondestations of india. The computed winds for these radiosonde stations arc quite close to observed winds.展开更多

Because of its ability to model highly nonlinear problems, the ANN based model presents the best modelling results and can predict the hardness profile with good accuracy.

文摘Tendon force is an essential concept to predict welding distortion such as longitudinal shrinkage and welding induced buckling in thin plate fabrication. In this study, three approaches with experimental, theoretical and computational analysis, are examined to evaluate the magnitude of tendon force. In detail, inherent deformation theory is introduced first, the theoretical analysis to obtain the inherent strain solution is also reviewed; and then analytical solution for tendon force is achieved. Also, the theory of FE analysis for welding is introduced and implemented in a computation to obtain the transient temperature distribution, plastic strain, residual stress and welding distortion in a bead-on-plate welded joint with 2. 28 mm in thickness. The longitudinal displacement is employed to evaluate tendon force directly, and these computed inherent strain and inherent stress can also be employed to evaluate tendon force by integration approach later. All the evaluated magnitudes of tendon force have a good agreement with each other.

文摘An efficient prediction mechanical performance of coating structures has been a constant concern since the dawn of surface engineering. This paper presents an effective modelling approach for the prediction of mechanical performance of surface coatings.

文摘Precision prediction of machined surface roughness is challenging facing the robotic belt grinding of complex blade, since this process is accompanied by significant elastic deformation. The resulting poor prediction accuracy,to a great extent,is attributed to the existing prediction model which less considers the dynamics. In this paper,an improved scallop height model is developed to predict and assess the machined surface roughness by taking into account the elastic deformation and the varying curvature of blade, then robotic belt grinding experiments are carried out to evaluate the proposed model from the perspective of surface roughness. Finally factors that influence the scallop height are analyzed, and the suitable empirical equation of surface roughness is proposed to assess and predict the surface quality from the aspect of blade concave and convex surface by adopting the constant scallop height machining.

文摘To make the dynamic assembly reliability analysis more effective for complex machinery of multi-object multi-discipline(MOMD),distributed collaborative extremum response surface method(DCERSM)was proposed based on extremum response surface method(ERSM).Firstly, the basic theories of the ERSM and DCERSM were investigated, and the strengths of DCERSM were proved theoretically.Secondly, the mathematical model of the DCERSM was established based upon extremum response surface function(ERSF).Finally, this model was applied to the reliability analysis of blade-tip radial running clearance(BTRRC)of an aeroengine high pressure turbine(HPT)to verify its advantages. The results show that the DCERSM can not only reshape the possibility of the reliability analysis for the complex turbo machinery, but also greatly improve the computational speed, save the computational time and improve the computational efficiency while keeping the accuracy. Thus, the DCERSM is verified to be feasible and effective in the dynamic assembly reliability(DAR)analysis of complex machinery. Moreover, this method offers an useful insight for designing and optimizing the dynamic reliability of complex machinery.

文摘The governing equations of surface-deformation in fully-penetrated GTAW weld pool are derived. It lays good foundation for top-side sensing based weld penetration control.

文摘A polycrystalline Voronoi aggregation with a free surface is applied as the representative volume element(RVE)of the nickel-based GH4169 superalloy.Considering the plastic deformation mechanism at the grain level and the Bauschinger effect,a crystal plasticity model reflecting the nonlinear kinematic hardening of crystal slipping system is applied. The microscopic inhomogeneous deformation during cyclic loading is calculated through numerical simulation of crystal plasticity. The deformation inhomogeneity on the free surface of the RVE under cyclic loading is described respectively by using the following parameters:standard deviation of the longitudinal strain in macro tensile direction, statistical average of first principal strains, and standard deviation of longitudinal displacement. The relationship between the fatigue cycle number and the evolution of inhomogeneous deformation of the material’s free surface is investigated. This research finds that:(1)The inhomogeneous deformation of the material free surface is significantly higher than that of the RVE inside;(2)the increases of the characterization parameters of inhomogeneous deformation on the free surface with cycles reflect the local maximum deformation of the RVE growing during cyclic loading;(3)these parameters can be used as criteria to assess and predict the low-cycle fatigue life rationally.
文摘A technique based on the double Fourier series is developed to estimate the winds at different isobaric levels forthe limited area domain, 35°E to 140°E and 30°S to 40°N, using the observed winds at 850 hPa lcvcl for the month ofJune. The computed winds for these radiosonde stations arc quite close to observed winds.
