Numerous engineering cases have demonstrated that the expansive soil channel slope remains susceptible to damage with the implementation of a rigid or closed protective structure. It is common for the protective structure to experience bulging failure due to excessive swelling pressure. To investigate the swelling pressure properties of expansive soil, the constant volume test was employed to study the influence of water content and reserved expansion deformation on the characteristics of swelling pressure in strong expansive soils, and also to explore the evolution mechanism of the swelling pressure. The findings demonstrate that the swelling pressure-time curve can be classified into swelling pressure-time softening and swelling pressure-time stability type. The swelling pressuretime curve of the specimen with low water content is the swelling pressure-time softening type, and the softening level will be weakened with increasing reserved expansion deformation. Besides, the maximum swelling pressure Psmax decreases with increasing water content and reserved expansion deformation, especially for expansion ratio η from 24% to 37%. The reserved deformation has little effect on reducing Psmax when it is beyond 7% of the expansion rate. The specimen with low water content has a more homogeneous structure due to the significant expansion-filling effect, and the fracture and reorganization of the aggregates in the specimens with low water content cause the swelling pressure-time softening behavior. In addition, the proposed swelling pressure-time curve prediction model has a good prediction on the test results. If necessary, a deformation space of about 7% expansion rate is recommended to be reserved in the engineering to reduce the swelling pressure except for keeping a stable water content. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Although the spasm provocation test(SPT)can diagnose coronary spasms,it would be helpful if it could also predict their occurrence.AIM To investigate whether coronary spasms can be predicted using changes in intracoronary artery pressure measured using a pressure wire during the SPT.METHODS Seventy patients underwent SPTs with pressure-wire measurement of intracoronary artery pressure.During each SPT,the pressure wire was advanced into the distal portion of the right coronary artery(RCA)and left anterior descending coronary artery, and the ratio of intracoronary pressure to aortic pressure(Pd/Pa)was monitored.Coronary spasm was defined as an arterial narrowing of>90%in response to the administration of acetylcholine(ACh),with chest symptoms and/or ischemic electrocardiographic changes.ACh was administered to the RCA at low, moderate,or high doses of 20,50,or 80μg,respectively,and to the left coronary artery(LCA)at low, moderate,or high doses of 50,100,or 200μg,respectively.Coronary arteries with coronary spasms at low doses of ACh were defined as group L,and those with coronary spasms at moderate or high doses were defined as group MH.Those who did not occur coronary spasms at any ACh dose were designated as group N.RESULTS Among the 132 coronary arteries assessed using a pressure wire, there were 49 in group N,25 in group L,and 58 in group MH.Baseline Pd/Pa was the lowest in group L(P=0.001).The decrease in the Pd/Pa between baseline to low doses of ACh was lower in group MH than in group N(P<0.001).A receiver-operating characteristics analysis showed that the cutoff baseline Pd/Pa value for predicting group L was 0.95,with a sensitivity of 0.600(15/25)and a specificity of 0.713(76/107)and that the cutoff value of Pd/Pa from baseline to low doses of ACh for predicting group MH was−0.04,with a sensitivity of 0.741(43/58)and a specificity of 0.694(34/49).CONCLUSION These findings suggest that indices of intracoronary pressure during SPT may be useful means for predicting the occurrence of coronary spasms. 展开更多

Landslide is the second largest natural disaster after earthquake. It is of significance to study the evolution laws and failure mechanism of landslides based on its surface 3D deformation information. Based on the rainfall-triggered waste dump instability model test, we studied the failure mechanisms of the waste dump by integrating surface deformation and internal slope stress and proposed novel parameters for identifying landslide stability. We developed a noncontact measurement device, which can obtain millimeter-level 3D deformation data for surface scene in physical model test; Then we developed the similar materials and established a test model for a waste dump. Based on the failure characteristics of slope surface, internal stress of slope body and displacement contours during the whole process, we divided the slope instability process in model test into four stages: rainfall infiltration and surface erosion, shallow sliding, deep sliding, and overall instability. Based on the obtained surface deformation data, we calculated the volume change during slope instability process and compared it with the point displacement on slope surface. The results showed that the volume change can not only reflect the slow-ultra acceleration process of slope failure, but also fully reflect the above four stages and reduce the fluctuations caused by random factors. Finally, this paper proposed two stability identification parameters: the volume change rate above the slip surface and the relative velocity of volume change rate. According to the calculation of these two parameters in model test, they can be used for study the deformation and failure mechanism of slope stability. 展开更多

Buildings are always affected by frost heave and thaw settlement in cold regions, even where saline soil is present. This paper describes the triaxial testing results of frozen silty clay with high salt content and examines the in-fluence of confining pressure and temperature on its mechanical characteristics.Conventional triaxial compression tests were conducted under different confining pressures(0.5–7.0 MPa)and temperatures(-6℃,-8℃,-10℃,and-12℃).The test results show that when the confining pressure is less than 1 MPa,the frozen saline silty clay is dominated by brittle behavior with the X-shaped dilatancy failure mode.As the confining pressure increases, the sample gradually transitions from brittle to plastic behavior. The strength of frozen saline silty clay rises first and then decreases with increasing confining pressure. The improved Duncan-Chang hyperbolic model can describe the stress-strain relationship of frozen saline silty clay. And the parabolic strength criterion can be used to describe the strength evolution of frozen saline silty clay. The function relation of strength parameters with temperature is obtained by fitting, and the results of the parabolic strength criterion are in good agreement with the experimental results, especially when confining pressure is less than 5 MPa.Therefore, the study has important guiding significance for design and construction when considering high salinity soil as an engineering material in cold regions. 展开更多

Existing studies have focused on the behavior of the retaining wall equipped with expanded polystyrene(EPS)geofoam inclusions under semi-infinite surcharge loading rather than limited surcharge loading. In this paper, the failure mode and the earth pressure acting on the rigid retaining wall with EPS geofoam inclusions and granular backfills(henceforth referred to as EPS-wall),under limited surcharge loading are investigated through two-and three-dimensional model tests. The testing results show that different from the sliding of almost all the backfill in the EPS-wall under semi-infinite surcharge loading, only an approximately triangular backfill slides in the wall under limited surcharge loading. The distribution of the lateral earth pressure on the EPS-wall under limited surcharge loading is non-linear,and the distribution changes from the increase of the wall depth to the decrease with the increase of the limited surcharge loading. An approach based on the force equilibrium of a differential element is developed to predict the lateral earth pressure behind the EPS-wall subjected to limited surcharge loading, and its performance was fully validated by the three-dimensional model tests. 展开更多

The casing deformation prevention technology based on the optimization of cement slurry is proposed to reduce the casing deformation of shale oil and gas wells during hydraulic fracturing. In this paper, the fracture mechanism of hollow particles in cement sheath was firstly analyzed by discrete element method, and the effect of hollow particles in cement on casing deformation was investigated by laboratory experiment method. Finally, field test was carried out to verify the improvement effect of the casing deformation based on cement slurry modification. The results show that the formation displacement can be absorbed effectively by hollow particles inside the cement transferring the excessive deformation away from casing. The particles in the uncemented state provide deformation space during formation slipping. The casing with diameter of 139.7 mm could be passed through by bridge plug with the diameter of 99 mm when the mass ratio of particle/cement reaches 1:4. According to the field test feedback, the method based on optimization of cement slurry can effectively reduce the risk of casing deformation, and the recommended range of hollow microbeads content in the cement slurry is between 15% and 25%. 展开更多

Impulse waves that are generated by landslides in narrow reservoir areas threaten the stability of buildings and bank slopes. To discuss the action process and evolution law of the wave pressure on bank slopes,a three-dimensional physical model test that considers impulse waves generated by landslides was performed, and factors including landslide width, thickness, slope angles of the sliding surface, and bank slope angle were considered.Based on wave forms on the bank slopes, wave pressure curve characteristics, and peak value, the action process of wave pressure could be divided into the following stages:maximum pulsating pressure stage, wave impact stage(when waves break),and stationary pulsation stage. It was found that wave breaking is dependent on the value of the surf similarity parameterξ.The distribution pattern of impact pressure decays linearly on both sides of the maximum impact pressure point, and the attenuation degree decreases when it attains 40%of the maximum value. Thus,it is proposed that the prediction formula for the maximum effective impact pressure of the bank slope be related to the reciprocal of wave steepness, relative water depth, and slope rate. The prediction formula provides strong theoretical support for early safety warning and for predicting the bank slope under impulse waves generated by landslides. 展开更多

Moraines, characterized by the accumulation of rock and soil debris transported by glacial activity, present unique challenges for tunnel construction, particularly in portal sections, due to prevailing geographical and climatic conditions that facilitate freeze-thaw action.Despite these challenges, there is a dearth of studies investigating the influence of freeze-thaw action and water content on the mechanical properties of moraines, and no research on calculating surrounding rock pressure in moraine tunnels subjected to freeze-thaw conditions. In this study, direct shear tests under freeze-thaw cycles were conducted to examine the effects of freeze-thaw cycles and water content on the mechanical properties of frozen moraine.A comprehensive parameter K,integrating the number of freeze-thaws and water content, was introduced to model cohesion c.Drawing on Terzaghi Theory,we propose an improved algorithm for calculating surrounding rock pressure at the portal section of moraine tunnels.Using a tunnel as a case study, surrounding rock pressure was calculated under various conditions to validate the Improved Algorithm's efficacy. The results show that:(1)Strength loss exhibits a linear trend with the number of freeze-thaw cycles at water content levels of 4%and 8%,while at 12%water content, previous freeze-thaw cycles induce more significant damage to the soil.(2)Moraine saturation peaks between 8%and 12%water content.Following repeated freeze-thaw cycles, moraine shear strength initially increases before decreasing with varying water content.(3)The internal friction angle of moraine experiences slight reductions with prolonged freeze-thaw cycles, but both freeze-thaw cycles and water content significantly influence cohesion.(4)Vertical surrounding rock pressure increases after the initial freeze-thaw cycle, particularly with higher water content, although freeze-thaw cycles have minimal effect on it.(5)Freeze-thaw cycles lead to a substantial increase in lateral surrounding rock pressure, necessitating reinforced support structures at the arch wall, arch waist, and arch foot in engineering projects to mitigate freeze-thaw effects. This study provides a foundation for designing and selecting tunnel support structures in similar geological conditions. 展开更多

Karst sinkholes with natural negative landform provide favorable conditions for the pumped storage reservoir construction for less excavation work. However, the construction of the reservoir would plug the natural karst channels for water and air, which would cause remarkable air pressure in karst channels when the groundwater level fluctuates.A large laboratory simulation test was carried out to study the air pressure variation of a reservoir built on the karst sinkhole. The air pressure in the karst channel and inside the model was monitored during the groundwater rising and falling process.Result showed that the variation of air pressure in the karst channel and the surrounding rock exhibited a high degree of similarity. The air pressure increased rapidly at the initial stage of water level rising, followed by a slight decrease, then the air pressure increased sharply when the water level approached the top of the karst cave. The initial peak of air pressure and the final peak of air pressure were defined, and both air pressure peaks were linearly increasing with the water level rising rate. The negative air pressure was also analyzed during the drainage process, which was linearly correlated with the water level falling rate. The causes of air pressure variation in karst channels of a pumped storage reservoir built on the karst sinkhole were discussed. The initial rapid increase, then slight decrease and final sudden increase of air pressure were controlled by the combined effects of air compression in karst channel and air seepage into the surrounding rock. For the drainage process, the instant negative air pressure and gradual recovering of air pressure were controlled by the combined effects of negative air pressure induced by water level falling and air supply from surrounding rock. This work could provide valuable reference for the reservoir construction in karst area. 展开更多

The intensification of physicochemical processes in the sonochemical reactor chamber is widely used in problems of synthesis, extraction and separation. One of the most important mechanisms at play in such processes is the acoustic cavitation due to the non-uniform distribution of acoustic pressure in the chamber.Cavitation has a strong impact on the surface degradation mechanisms. In this work,a numerical calculation of the acoustic pressure distribution inside the reactor chamber was performed using COMSOL Multiphysics. The numerical results have revealed the dependence of the structure of the acoustic pressure field on the boundary conditions for various thicknesses of the piezoelectric transducer. In particular, the amplitude of the acoustic pressure is minimal in the case of absorbing boundaries, and the attenuation becomes more significant as the thickness of the piezoelectric transducer increases. In addition, reflective boundaries play a significant role in the formation and distribution of zones of maximum cavitation activity. 展开更多

Almost all sandstone reservoirs contain interlayers. The identification and characterization of these interlayers iscritical for minimizing the uncertainty associated with oilfield development and improving oil and gas recovery.Identifying interlayers outside wells using identification methods based on logging data and machine learning isdifficult and seismic-based identification techniques are expensive. Herein, a numerical model based on seepageand well-testing theories is introduced to identify interlayers using transient pressure data. The proposed modelrelies on the open-source MATLAB Reservoir Simulation Toolbox. The effects of the interlayer thickness, position, and width on the pressure response are thoroughly investigated. A procedure for inverting interlayer parametersin the reservoir using the bottom-hole pressure is also proposed. This method uses only transient pressuredata during well testing and can effectively identify the interlayer distribution near the wellbore at an extremelylow cost. The reliability of the model is verified using effective oilfield examples. 展开更多

Jointed rock specimens with a natural replicated joint surface oriented at a mean dip angle of 60were prepared, and a series of cyclic triaxial tests was performed at different confining pressures and cyclic deviatoric stress amplitudes. The samples were subjected to 10,000 loading-unloading cycles with a frequency of 8 Hz.At each level of confining pressure, the applied cyclic deviatoric stress amplitude was increased incrementally until excessive deformation of the jointed rock specimen was observed.Analysis of the test results indicated that there existed a critical cyclic deviatoric stress amplitude(i.e.critical dynamic deviatoric stress)beyond which the jointed rock specimens yielded. The measured critical dynamic deviatoric stress was less than the corresponding static deviatoric stress. At cyclic deviatoric stress amplitudes less than the critical dynamic deviatoric stress, minor cumulative residual axial strains were observed, resulting in hysteretic damping. However, for cyclic deviatoric stresses beyond the critical dynamic deviatoric stress, the plastic strains increased promptly, and the resilient moduli degraded rapidly during the initial loading cycles.Cyclic triaxial test results showed that at higher confining pressures, the ultimate residual axial strain attained by the jointed rock specimen decreased, the steadystate dissipated energy density and steady-state damping ratio per load cycle decreased, while steadystate resilient moduli increased. 展开更多

Existing transversely isotropic poroelastodynamics solutions are limited to infinite domains and without experimental validation. Furthermore, there is a lack of analytical simulations for the elastic moduli dispersion of fluid-saturated porous cylinders. To address these three limitations and investigate the mechanisms of moduli dispersion, we present the analytical solutions of the poromechanical responses and the elastic moduli dispersion of a transversely isotropic, fluid-saturated, finite porous cylinder subjected to a forced deformation test. Through an example, we demonstrate the effects of loading frequency, boundary conditions, and material's anisotropy, dimension, and permeability on the responses of pore pressure, force, displacement, and dynamic elastic moduli of the cylinder. The specimen's responses are significantly influenced by the frequency of the applied load, resulting in a drained state at low frequencies and an undrained state at high frequencies. At high frequencies, the sample behaves identically for an open or a closed lateral boundary, and permeability has insignificant effects. The dynamic elastic moduli are mainly controlled by the loading frequency and the ratio of the sample's radius to its height. Lastly,we show excellent matches between the newly derived analytical solution and laboratory measurements on one clay and two shale samples from Mont Terri. 展开更多

The mechanical behavior of the test string in deep wells is generally relatively complex as a result of the high temperature and high pressure, severe dogleg and buckling effects, which in some circumstances can even lead to string failure.Traditional computational methods for the analysis of these behaviors are often inaccurate. For this reason, here a more accurate mechanical model of the test string is introduced by considering variables such as temperature, pressure, wellbore trajectory, and buckling,as well as combining them with the deformation and string constraint conditions brought in by changes in temperature and pressure during the tripping, setting, and test operations. The model is validated by applying it to a specific high-pressure gas well(located in Northeast Sichuan). 展开更多

In this research, mechanical stress, static strain and deformation analyses of a cylindrical pressure vessel subjected to mechanical loads are presented. The kinematic relations are developed based on higherorder sinusoidal shear deformation theory.Thickness stretching formulation is accounted for more accurate analysis. The total transverse deflection is divided into bending, shear and thickness stretching parts in which the third term is responsible for change of deflection along the thickness direction. The axisymmetric formulations are derived through principle of virtual work.A parametric study is presented to investigate variation of stress and strain components along the thickness and longitudinal directions. To explore effect of thickness stretching model on the static results,a comparison between the present results with the available results of literature is presented. As an important output, effect of micro-scale parameter is studied on the static stress and strain distribution. 展开更多

Monitoring tire pressure of cars and signaling abnormal conditions is an important means to prevent deadly accidents. Large achievements have been gained, especially in direct tire pressure monitoring system(TPMS). But there has been rarely research on indirect TPMS in the world. In China, the research on indirect TPMS is almost lacking. The international research on the indirect monitoring tire pressure method is mainly based on measuring and comparing the rotating speed of wheels. But it is very difficult to measure wheel rotating speed accurately because of the influence of many random factors. In this paper, the authors propose a new method in which the tire pressure can be monitored indirectly. This method can be used for tire calibration, wheel speed frequency standardization, wheel speed frequency comparison, and abnormal tire pressure determination. The pulse frequencies from wheel speed sensors of ABS are used to indicate tire deformation. Because the frequency has a relationship with tire deformation, the tire deformation reflects the tire pressure. Small sample statistics is used in the new method to increase the accuracy, and the experimental samples using the principle of the new method have been made and tested. The result of vehicle tests on road demonstrates that the method is efficient and accurate to monitor tire pressure. The research has positive potential for developing products. 展开更多

The modified suction caisson(MSC) is a novel type of foundation for ocean engineering, consisting of a short external closed-top cylinder-shaped structure surrounding the upper part of the regular suction caisson(RSC). The MSC can provide larger lateral bearing capacity and limit the deflection compared with the RSC. Therefore, the MSC can be much more appropriate to use as an offshore wind turbine foundation. Model tests on the MSC in saturated sand subjected to monotonic lateral loading were carried out to investigate the effects of external structure sizes on the sand surface deformation and the earth pressure distribution along the embedded depth. Test results show that the deformation range of the sand surface increases with the increasing width and length of the external structure. The magnitude of sand upheaval around the MSC is smaller than that of the RSC and the sand upheaval value around the MSC in the loading direction decreases with the increasing external structure dimensions. The net earth pressure in the loading direction acting on the internal compartment of the MSC is smaller than that of the RSC at the same embedded depth. The maximum net earth pressure acting on the external structure outer wall in the loading direction is larger than that of the internal compartment, indicating that a considerable amount of the lateral load and moment is resisted by the external skirt structure. 展开更多

To investigate the influence of magnitude and distribution of the transverse normal pressure on deformation behavior of sheet metal, viscous pressure bulge test (VPB) of overlapping sheet metals is proposed, where the overlapped sheet metal is deformed under the dual-sided normal pressure provided by viscous medium and the overlapping sheet. The transverse normal pressure loading features provided by overlapping sheet metals are first simulated by DEFORM-2D.It shows that the magnitude and space distribution of transverse normal pressure are dependent on strain hardening exponent n-,strength coefficient K-and thickness t-values of the overlapping sheet metal.Based on the stress, deviator stress and strain distribution resulted from the finite element simulation,it indicated that the uniform transverse normal pressure has no effect on deviator stress, the figure and strain distribution of bulge specimens have no change. The non-uniform transverse normal pressure can remarkably change the figure and metal flow of specimens, and the formability of sheet metal can be improved by controlling the transverse normal pressure distribution. 展开更多

In order to understand the change rules of stress-displacement in surrounding rocks of dynamic pressure roadways in deep mines and to obtain a theoretical basis for analyses of roadway stability and designs of support, we established a coupling equation of adjacent rock strength, mining stress and supporting resistance on the basis of an elastic-plastic theory of mechanics. We obtained an analytical solution for stress and displacement distribution of elastic and plastic regions in surrounding rock of dy-namic pressure roadway.. Based on this theory, we have analyzed the changes in stress-displacement in elastic and plastic regions of surrounding rocks of dynamic pressure roadways in the Haizi Coal Mine. The results show that: 1) radial and tangential stress change violently within the first 4 m from the inner surface of a roadway after excavation; radial stress increases while tangential stress decreases within a range of about 6 m from the inner surface of the roadway as a function of q3; 2) radial and tangential stress increase with an increase in the mining pressure coefficient k; the increase in the rate of tangential stress is greater than that of ra-dial stress; 3) the radial displacement of the inner surface of roadways decreases with an increase in q3, provided that k remains unchanged. 展开更多

Recent investigations reveal that the ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic (UHPM) rocks in the Donghai region of East China underwent ductile and transitional ductile-brittle structural events during their exhumation. The earlier ductile deformation took place under the condition of amphibolite facies and the later transitional ductile-brittle deformation under the condition of greenschist facies. The hanging walls moved southeastward during both of these two events. The 40Ar/39Ar dating of muscovites from muscovite-plagioclase schists in the Haizhou phosphorous mine, which are structurally overlain by UHPM rocks, yields a plateau age of 218.0±2.9 Ma and isochron age of 219.8Ma, indicating that the earlier event of the ampibolite-facies deformation probably took place about 220 Ma ago. The 40Ar/39Ar dating of oriented amphiboles parallel to the movement direction of the hanging wall on a decollement plane yields a plateau age of 213.1±0.3 Ma and isochron age of 213.4±4.1 Ma, probably representing the age of the later event. The dating of pegmatitic biotites and K-feldspars near the decollement plane from the eastern Fangshan area yield plateau ages of 203.4±0.3 Ma, 203.6±0.4 Ma and 204.8±2.2 Ma, and isochron ages of 204.0±2.0 Ma, 200.6±3.1 Ma and 204.0±5.0 Ma, respectively, implying that the rocks in the studied area had not been cooled down to closing temperature of the dated biotites and K-feldspars until the beginning of the Jurassic (about 204 Ma). The integration of these data with previous chronological ages on the ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism lead to a new inference on the exhumation of the UHPM rocks. The UHPM rocks in the area were exhumed at the rate of 3-4 km/Ma from the mantle (about 80-100 km below the earth's surface at about 240 Ma) to the lower crust (at the depth of about 20-30km at 220 Ma), and at the rate of 1-2 km/Ma to the middle crust (at the depth of about 15 km at 213 Ma), and then at the rate of less than 1 km/Ma to the upper crust about 10 km deep at about 204 Ma. 展开更多
