The Metacognitive Strategy-Oriented Model in Primary English Listening --A Study Within the Framework of Task-based Syllabus

With the development of language teaching theories and researches, people gradually realize the importance of listening among the basic foreign language skills. Thus, how to improve the efficiency of foreign language listening teaching has long been a concern of researchers and foreign language teachers. As the beginning of English study, primary English is of significant importance for the learners＇ future language development. The study tries to put primary English listening together with metacognitive strategy and build up the metacognitive strategy-oriented model in primary English listening class in order to improve primary students＇ listening comprehension. Firstly, the thesis pointed out the disadvantages of the current primary English listening teaching. In order to make up these disadvantages, the previous studies of listening comprehension and metacognition both home and abroad are reviewed and the necessity and feasibility of the study are discussed. Finally, it is concluded that it is necessary and feasible to carry out the metacognitive strategy-oriented model in primary English class.

The Application of Phonics to Primary English Teaching

With the development of new curriculum in China, primary English teachers' teaching methods have changed to some extent. However, learners are still weak in spelling and pronunciation. With the increase of learning content and the enlargement of vocabulary, learners' interest is decreasing. Based on the theoretical and practical considerations, this paper attempts to argue for the advantages and importance of phonics and to discuss how to apply phonics in primary English teaching. Phonics is an English teaching method which has the functions of pronunciation, spelling and reading. The key point of the phonics method is to build the corresponding relationship between English letters, letter patterns and sound. It can gradually develop learners' interest and build up learners' confidence in learning so that learners can learn and memorize words more effectively. Therefore,the conclusion can be drawn that phonics teaching method is becoming a main way in primary English teaching.

A Practical Study on Value-Added Assessment in Primary English Education

As a programmatic document to guide the reform of educational assessment,the“General Plan for Deepening the Reform of Educational Assessment in the New Era”clearly points out the requirement for exploring value-added assessment[1].In the process of exploring,Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System(TVAAS),which was implemented in Tennessee,United States in 1992,has a certain referential significance to the practice of assessment reform in primary English education[2].This study aims to build a value-added assessment model in line with China’s learning conditions by using big data and carry out pilot experiments in order to promote the development of educational assessment in primary schools.

Using TPR in Primary School English Teaching

A good method is easy to motivate the pupils' interest in learning. Total Physical Response(TPR), as a new language teaching method, is an effective way of English teaching. TPR can help and encourage learners to sustain their interest and attract their attention. TPR also can help the teacher to create contexts in which the language is useful and meaningful.

Corpus-based research on English word recognition rates in primary school and word selection strategy

Acquiring vocabulary is important when studying English, as it assists in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In this paper, we develop an English webpage corpus(EWC) and create a word frequency list using web crawler technology. By comparing EWC word lists with the British National Corpus(BNC), we find that the BNC word frequency list possesses the feature of timeliness. We also explore primary school students' English word recognition rates by comparing the word frequency lists of several corpora, including EWC, BNC, SUBTLEX-US, and Subtitle Corpus of Children's BBC(CBBC). The results show that the word recognition rates for primary school children are relatively low in both general language and specific language register. Motivated by the experiment results, we finally propose some word-selection strategies for compiling English textbooks for Chinese primary school students.

On the Applifaction of Games in English Teaching in Primary Schools

In primary school English classroom teaching,game teaching provides a definitely new code.It is beneficial for teachers to make classroom learning atmosphere active and arouse students’enthusiasm in learning English.A conclusion can be drawn that game teaching can stimulate students’interest in learning English and improve their English grade so that primary students can learn knowledge and know how to use it.

ON THE FUNDAMENTAL DIRECTION OF THE REFORM OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE EDUCATION IN CHINA

This paper discusses some of the unfounded beliefs in current foreign language education policy and English language teaching, i.e. learning a foreign language will make a person cleverer; learning a foreign language will improve one's potential power and creative ability; the younger the child learns a foreign language, the better he will learn the language. In the light of the problems in current foreign language teaching and foreign language education policy, the paper has put forward some reform proposals including 'differentiating cities from rural areas, stressing teaching efficiency and cutting down class hours, and offering a foreign language in schools either as a compulsory or as a selective course according to different needs of students'. In conclusion, the paper holds that the reform measures will bring benefit to the country as well as to its people and should be a guide to the reform of China's foreign language education.
