The development objectives of the Chinese government have a guiding effect on the school-running characteristics of private colleges and universities.This paper explores the relationship between the characteristics of private colleges and universities and the development objectives of the provincial government,using Jiangsu Province as a case study.All the schools have the consciousness of fully considering the development objectives of Jiangsu Province when formulating the school-running characteristics.Their characteristics all contain some training methods,training courses,or institutional construction aiming at the development objectives.Most universities can support the government’s objectives on employment and innovation.Only a third of the schools provide government support for science research.Private colleges and universities should make full use of the free and flexible advantages of private education,combine them with the continuous changes of policies and markets,and create clear,scientific,and dynamic school-running characteristics,in order to achieve long-term development. 展开更多

The“profit-making”attribute of commercial subjects shapes the classification system of legal representatives and the contents of corresponding norms in the Civil Code of the People’s Republic of China.The division of non-profit and non-commercial in the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Promotion of Privately-Run Schools not only conforms to the provisions of General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China,but also lays an institutional foundation for the classified management of private colleges.However,it cannot solve the problem of substantial profit-making behaviors of non-profit private colleges.As an important organizational form of enterprise organizations,the“Common Benefit Company”has changed the rule-making for traditional for-profit companies,so that the organizational form can be applied to both profit and public welfare enterprises.The functional design of the common benefit company system can now be applied to standardize the organizational structures of private colleges in China.Drawing lessons from the legislative experience regarding the common benefit company,we can enhance the organizational structures of our private colleges by implementing the common benefit company. 展开更多

In this study,we conducted an investigation among medical workers,patients and college students concerning their acceptability of breast palpation performed by male doctors(hereinafter referred to as “acceptability”,or “the examination”,respectively,if not otherwise indicated),to get the information about their acceptability and reasons for accepting or declining the examination among the three population. A questionnaire investigation was conducted in 500 patients with breast diseases,700 students of medical colleges,and 280 medical workers working in hospitals. The subjects were asked to choose between two options: accept or do not accept(the examination). The subjects were asked to fill out the questionnaire forms on free and anonymous basis and the questionnaire forms were collected on spot,immediately after completion. The questionnaires collected were coded,sorted out and checked. Data of the eligible questionnaires were input into Epidata software and analyzed by SPSS. Upon the establishment of the database,the intra-group data were tested by utilizing χ2 test. Among 1480 questionnaires,1293(90.41%) questionnaires were retrieved. Our results showed that 56.78% of patients reported that they could accept breast palpation by male doctors. About 59.66% of medical staff expressed their acceptance of the examination,but only 35.03% of students said the examination. On the basis of this study,we were led to conclude that the examination is not well accepted by different populations,and therefore,(1) medical professionals and administrators should pay attention to the gender-related ethics in their practice and the feeling of patients should be respected when medical examinations involve private or sensitive body parts;(2) to this end,related departments should be properly staffed with doctors of both sexes,and this is especially true of the departments involving the examination or treatment of private or sensitive body parts;(3) health education should,among other things,include helping female patients to overcome the fear and anxiety in such examinations. This is of great importance since some women may miss the opportunity to get timely diagnosis. 展开更多

The Role of Societal and Contextual Factors in Second Language Learning Motivation:A Perspective from Tertiary Students in Pakistan 被引量:3

In recent years, SLA and L2 learning motivation have received extensive attention of researchers and teachers across the globe but the issue remains underdeveloped and there are only some small-scale studies on this subject in Pakistan. Among different factors that affect L2 learning motivation, the current study focuses on exploring differences in L2 learning motivation by college type (private vs. public) and major subject of study (Arts vs. Sciences). Analyzing the questionnaire data from 547 first year college students, the study singles out different situation-specific factors that account for variation in ESL learning motivation. Results indicate that private college students have a higher motivation level and better achievements in ESL learning as compared to public college students. Public college students have strong instrumental motivation while private college students show preferences for an ideal L2 self. L2 motivation does not differ a great deal between students with different subjects of study but there is a big gap in the achievement of both groups. Arts majors' motivation depends heavily on their attitude towards English while science majors are instrumentally motivated to learn English. We also discuss some possible reasons for the differences in motivation and implications of the study for ESL teachers and learners. 展开更多
