To date, the impact of backwater on the water surface profile in curved channels remains unknown and requires investigation. In this study, experiments were conducted in a glass-walled recirculating flume with a length of 19.4 m, a width of 0.6 m, and a depth of 0.8 m, and the impact of backwater on the water surface profile in a 90° channel bend was investigated. The experimental results showed that the backwater degree had a significant impact on the transverse and longitudinal flow depth distributions in the bend. The transverse slope of the flow (Jr) increased linearly with an increase in the Froude number of the approach flow upstream of the bend. Jr increased with the longitudinal location parameter ξ when −0.2 < ξ < 0.5, and decreased with ξ when 0.5 < ξ < 1.2. Furthermore, the results showed that Jr asymptotically decreased to zero with an increase in the degree of backwater. An equation was formulated to estimate the transverse slope of the flow in a 90° bend in backwater zones.展开更多

First, the sign Doppler Estimator is applied to estimate the Doppler shift of each radar resolution cell. And then, in terms of the Doppler shift, a retrieval algorithm extracting the vertical displacement of the sea surface has been proposed. The effects induced by radar look-direction and radar spatial resolution are both taken into account in this retrieval algorithm. The comparison between the sea surface spectrum of buoy data and the retrieved spectrum reveals that the function of the radar spatial resolution is equivalent to a low pass filter, impacting especially the spectrum of short gravity waves. The experimental data collected by McMaster IPIX radar are also used to validate the performance of the retrieval algorithm. The derived significant wave height and wave period are compared with the in situ measurements, and the agreement indicates the practicality of the retrieval technology.展开更多

However, some micro waviness( amplitude about 30 nm,wavelength about 15 mm) along the cutting direction which will decrease the quality of the optical elements can always be found in the processed surface, and the axial vibration of the spindle caused by the cut-in process is speculated as the immediate cause of this waviness. In this paper, the analytical method of dynamic mesh is applied for simulating the dynamic behavior of the vertical spindle. The consequence is then exerted to the fly cutter and the processed surface profile is simulated. The wavelength of the simulation result coincides well with the experimental result which proves the importance of the cut-in process during the single point diamond fly cutting.展开更多

So LSB areas not only make ETGs’Sérsic profiles deviate from de Vaucouleur ones and shift to the disk end,but also reveal that quite a number of ETGs have opposite color gradients in inner and outer areas. These outcomes remind us of the necessity of double-Sérsic fitting. These LSB phenomena may be interpreted by mergers and thus have different metallicity in the outer areas.Isophotal parameters are also discussed briefly in this paper with the following conclusion:there are more disky nearby ETGs that are identified than boxy ones.展开更多

A resistive load arrangement is used with up to 42 V DC at 24 A and a constant contact opening velocity. The arc current is terminated at different stages as the arc is drawn between the contacts enabling a study of the arcing phenomena up to that point. Surface profiling of the contacts is conducted to determine the extent of erosion at the different stages as the arc is drawn. Spectral analysis is also conducted on the arc and then related to the extent of erosion. The results show that particular features occur at different stages as the arc is drawn. As the arc is initially established, it goes through an "Arc Generation" regime where the arc roots are small and immobile on both the anode and the cathode. Material transfer occurs mainly from anode to cathode. The spectral analysis indicates that Sn and O species dominate the arc followed by the Ag species. As the arc is drawn further and enters the "Arc Degeneration" regime, the anode undergoes significantly larger erosion than the cathode. Also, both contacts indicate that multiple arc roots have formed, which are highly mobile in the later stages of the discharge. The spectral analysis indicates that Ag and N species are in high concentrations compared to other species. The mechanisms of erosion and deposition are discussed in relation to the species within the arc discharge. For the complete break operation, it is found that the anode undergoes major erosion, and it is thought that the gaseous ions species do not dominate the arc under these conditions of short arcs and voltage 〈42 V to cause cathode erosion.展开更多

It was found that the contact line receded when the substrate was at a temperature above 60 ℃. Different nucleation behavior and surface profiles of PEO films were found in different droplets drying processes. The rheological properties of aqueous PEO solutions were studied to understand the mechanism of contact line recession and micro-flow in drying aqueous PEO droplets. It was found that at low temperature, the contact line was static because of great viscous stress; while at high temperature, it receded because of great Marangoni force and the decrease of viscous stress. It was indicated that Marangoni convection was inhibited by the outward capillary flow and viscous stress at low temperature, whereas it became dominant at high temperature. Two types of mechanism for surface profiles and nucleation of PEO film from drying droplets are proposed, providing a theoretical guide for polymer solution application in oil and gas foam flooding technology.展开更多

The excited dipole decay radiatively direct near-field coupling to SPP mode owing to thin A1203 layer of 100 nm. The effects of electric and magnetic field intensity profiles and decay length have been considered and characterized. It is found that dipole location is an important factor to influence the horizontal and vertical profile properties of symmetric SPP mode in Au/A1203/Au waveguide. The amplitudes of electric and magnetic field intensity and the wavelengths of metal-insulatormetal (MIM) SPP resonance mode can be tuned by varying dipole location. The horizontal and vertical decay lengths are 19 and 24 nm, respectively. It is expected that the Au/A1203/Au waveguide structure is very useful for the practical applications of designing a SPP source.展开更多

Many cathodic protection (CP) systems with arc sprayed Zn anodes will reach or exceed their design life in the near future and thus may function improperly or insufficiently, making it necessary to replace the aged anodes. However, prior to this study, little was known about the most effective profile for the concrete surface, for either new concrete or old concrete with existing Zn anodes removed. This work develops criteria to properly prepare the concrete surface before the application of new Zn anode. Experimental studies were conducted both in the laboratory and for a field structure in Oregon. Artificial neural network was used to achieve better understanding of the complex cause-and-effect relationships inherent in the Zn-mortar or Zn-concrete systems and was successful in finding meaningful, logical results from the bond strength data. The goal is to achieve strong initial bond strength of new Zn to concrete, which is essential for long-term performance of the CP system. The results from this case study suggest that it is necessary to adjust the anode removal and surface sandblasting based on the electrochemical age of the existing concrete. In all cases of sandblasting, minimize the exposure of large aggregates (e.g., those bigger than 19 mm in diameter).展开更多

The FD of 1.2623 of the classic Koch curve is obtained, which approximates the true value of 1.2628. The complexities of the object's boundary and surface micro-topography are simulated successfully by a generator method.
文摘The drying of aqueous poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) droplet on a substrate at different temperatures was studied. Two types of mechanism for surface profiles and nucleation of PEO film from drying droplets are proposed, providing a theoretical guide for polymer solution application in oil and gas foam flooding technology.
文摘The process of estimating the level of water surface in two-stage waterways is a crucial aspect in the design of flood control and diversion structures.Human activities carried out along the course of rivers, such as agricultural and construction operation, have the potential to modify the geometry of floodplains, leading to the formation of compound channels with non-prismatic floodplains, thus possibly exhibiting convergent, divergent,or skewed characteristics. In the current investigation, the Support Vector Machine(SVM)technique is employed to approximate the water surface profile of compound channels featuring narrowing floodplains. Some models are constructed by utilizing significant experimental data obtained from both contemporary and previous investigations.Water surface profiles in these channels can be estimated through the utilization of non-dimensional geometric and flow parameters, including:converging angle, width ratio, relative depth, aspect ratio, relative distance, and bed slope. The results of this study indicate that the SVM-generated water surface profile exhibits a high degree of concordance with both the empirical data and the findings from previous research,as evidenced by its R^(2) value of 0.99,RMSE value of 0.0199,and MAPE value of 1.263.The findings of this study based on statistical analysis demonstrate that the SVM model developed is dependable and suitable for applications in this particular domain, exhibiting superior performance in forecasting water surface profiles.
文摘A physical method, based on the simplification of surface radiation terms in remote sensing equations, has been suggested to retrieve the surface temperature, vertical temperature profile and surface emissivity from the first eight channel observations of TIROS-N/HIRS2.Analyses of several examples indicate that this method can obtain much more accurate temperatures in the lower atmosphere than a statistical technique, and that the surface temperature and emissivity retrieved are also reasonable.

文摘To reduce friction and improve clarity of steel surfaces, laser texturing was used to produce known surface roughness profile on rolled surfaces using a Nd:YAG laser. Laser texturing process was analyzed to select the laser parameters. The surface roughness hardness and abrasion resistance were then measured and analyzed. The results show that the surface roughness is harder than the matrix, which fits for the requirements of laser texturing. The surface roughness also has good abrasion resistance. The intensity and distribution of the single pulse are the key points affecting the surface roughness profile.

文摘This study uses a dipole embedded in A1203 layer to excite a symmetric surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode in Au/A1203/Au waveguide to investigate its profile properties by using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. It is expected that the Au/A1203/Au waveguide structure is very useful for the practical applications of designing a SPP source.
文摘Arc sprayed zinc (Zn) anode on concrete surfaces has been an emerging technology for protecting reinforced concrete structures from rebar corrosion in coastal environments. In all cases of sandblasting, minimize the exposure of large aggregates (e.g., those bigger than 19 mm in diameter).

文摘A new on-machine profiler employing a cantilever beam was proposed and developed to measure the sharp micro-cutting edges of precision cutting tools with low measuring force of 0.1 mN.The proposed profiler consists of a probe unit and a positioning unit. The probe unit employs a stylus mounted on the free end of a hollow triangular cantilever beam and a laser displacement sensor to detect the detlection of the cantilever beam. The positioning unit consists of two single-axis DC servo motor stages for precise positioning of the probe unit. The cantilever is designed with the assistance of the finite element method. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed measurement system, experiments are conducted and the measurement result for a micro-cutting edge is compared with that by a commercial profiler.Furthermore,a method to com-pensate for the measurement error caused by the lateral displacement of the cantilever beam is proposed. The compensated measurement results show good agreement within±2μm with those obtained by the commercial profler.
