This article addresses the relationship between science and propaganda using the Climate Change controversy as a study model. The United Nations International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the recognized leader on this model issuing multiple Assessment Reports. This review begins with a discussion of the basics—what is propaganda and how does it work, followed by whether the IPCC adopted or rejected it. Next explored is how propaganda can be seamlessly fused into “report writing” in a way that arouses and makes interesting humdrum details. Some unexpected results emerged from current and historical observation data involving the Greenhouse theory, CO2 sources, ocean pH, sea levels, and ice balances. The final section confronts whether “a point of view” constrains objectivity in favor of outcome. The overall conclusion is that the earth is boringly healthy. 展开更多

This paper examines The Herald newspaper's role in safeguarding the seemingly unparalleled longevity of Zimbabwe's ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) party. Through an analysis of a sample of stories from both the paper's print and online editions, the study traces the origins of the broadsheet's ostensibly unflagging pro-ZANU-PF editorial positions, turning to article analysis to critically probe not only the motive but also the impact of the newspaper's assumed open allegiance to the revolutionary party. In a nation believed battered by perceived state brutality and widening political differences, The Herald has been accused of significantly influencing the pace of dictatorship while guardedly manipulating information to prop up President Robert Mugabe's party. So important has the paper become over the years that its often uncompromising, one-sided style of reporting has earned it praise among militant ZANU-PF hardliners while bitterly attracting widespread criticism from critics of the long-serving party. 展开更多

In a national effort to promote anti-Semitism, the Institute for the Study and Eradication of Jewish Influence (ISEJI) was established in Nazi Germany. Its leader, Walter Grundmann, was instrumental in the promotion of the Aryan Jesus dogma in scholarly circles. Through a quid pro quo arrangement with a state-based university, the dogma was given scholarly respectability. The dogma asserted that Jesus was not Jew. This dogma gained enough support to be adopted into the German Lutheran Church’s catechism of the time. Not only was the motivation for the promotion of the dogma suspect, but the reasoning used to arrive at the conclusion was faulty. The dogma contributed to the body of Nazi propaganda that vilified Jews as enemies of the Aryan society. 展开更多

This paper explores the recent findings of some empirical research concerning Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham's (ISIS') communication and tries to synthesize them under the theoretical frame of propaganda's concept and practices. Many authors demonstrated how ISIS propaganda campaigns, in particular those deployed on cyberspace, proved to be effective in recruiting new members in both western and Muslim countries. However, while most of the researches focused on ISIS's communication contents and narratives, few works considered other methods and techniques used for actually delivering them. This is a regrettable missing point given the fact that communication's and neurosciences' studies demonstrate that not only what is communicated but also the techniques adopted bear important consequences on the receiver's perceptions and behavior. Therefore, this article analyzes in particular the findings of researches carried out by communication scholars, social psychologists, and neuro-cognitive scientists on ISIS' persuasive communication techniques and demonstrates their importance for security studies' analysis of ISIS' propaganda. It argues that ISIS' success in mobilizing people and make them prone to violent action relies on-among other factors-its knowledge and exploitation of sophisticated methods of perceptions' manipulation and behavior's influence. This, in turn, demonstrates ISIS' possession of state-like soft power capabilities effectively deployed in propaganda campaigns and therefore calls for a more complex understanding of its agency. 展开更多

The article examines the idea of monumentality (following Evgeny Dobrenko's concept of "petrified utopia") in Polish Socialist literature especially by analyzing Lenin's "monumental propaganda" and its influence on literary thinking. Starting from some details about Lenin's vision and plan, the article will further present how the act of transposition of a monument into texts---the act of materialization monuments in literary signs--causes some kind of monumental spectrality or dematerialization and as a consequence, the disappearance of art in Rancieran sense in which the art disappears when it becomes transparent for itself. To prove this thesis, the article will analyze two main architectural examples: Tatlin's Monument to the Third International (as the great realization of Lenin's doctrine) and Polish Palace of Culture and Science which was the theme of many Polish Socialist poems. In conclusion, the article will also present some broader perspective of modem architectural utopias and their spectrality. 展开更多

Faced with many problems (practically insoluble) that call them politicians lie (to save their careers), claiming that they are resolutely interested to earth’s environment protection. Unnecessary (for some) and outrageously expensive (for others) organization of COP21 is part of this logic of distracting the “international community” by (for example) making believe that the reduction of CO2 emissions is something reachable for humans and that this reduction can weaken the harmful effects of global warming such as: floods, endless droughts, melting glaciers, upsurge of hurricanes or tornadoes, etc. Can the “binding” commitments taken during COP21 be effective? Our objective and immediate answer is: No. Because those who have made commitments, ignore completely how the CO2 (main object of their attentions) or sulfur dioxide (SO2) behave with respect to some predominant elements of the atmosphere such as clouds. Moreover, a significant number of the propaganda forums’ stakeholders ignores that earth’s atmosphere is considerably affected by the radiation from the sun and that the intensity of solar radiation received at the surface of the earth mainly depends on the Earth-Sun distance and the precession angle of the earth relative to its orbit. Earth-Sun distance and precession angle of the Earth’s orbit vary in space and time: this Physical law must be constantly present in our minds. Teaching the fundamentals of Atmospheric Physics allows solar radiation and its derivative forms (e.g.: winds, snow or rains) to cease to be a mystery in the mind of the international community. 展开更多

Some research on climate change has been the basis of climate change denialism(here-after,CCD is used to refer to denial, denialism, and deniers). There is formative knowledge about the role of political propaganda in climate policies and resulting outcomes.Tocontribute to the understanding of political ideology and the extent of CCD,we adopt econometric techniques to study the impact of the United States of America's withdrawal from the Paris Agreement. The results show that ideological political propaganda haspsychological and philosophical consequences that impact climate change policies. In addition,we find that the effect of a state's economic growth on climate change is mediated by CCD.In particular,low-income capitalist states have a higher propensity to become CCDs because they are more likely to engage in economic expansion even at the expense of environmental sustainability.Global climate change policies depend on high-income nations and industries'willingness to adopt economic policies to achieve sus-tainable future development. Thus, this study fills the literature gap on the relationship between political ideology and climate change. The findings show that CCD significantlyinfluences voting patterns and socioeconomic outcomes. It impedes states from achieving net-zero emissions and carbon neutrality and it is used as a political propaganda.Subject to these findings, relevant policy suggestions are offered. 展开更多

Propaganda by the Book: Contextualizing and Reading the Zhejiang GMD's 1929 Textbook Essentials for Propaganda Workers

The Nationalist Party (GMD) had been writing and issuing documents of many types for some years before Nanjing was established as the capital of the Republic of China in 1927/1928. From its earliest days, doctrines were advanced via cause-oriented newspapers and journals. Even more important, the Soviet-sponsored reorganization of the GMD in the early 1920s had yielded a far-reaching party propaganda operation tied to Sun Yat-sen's notion of political tutelage. But how was propaganda to work in practice? And at whom was it to be aimed? This article seeks to address aspects of these questions by assessing a textbook for propaganda workers that was issued in the name of the GMD's Zhejiang Provincial Executive Committee's Propaganda Department in October 1929, half a year after the GMD's foundational right-wing Third Party Congress. Although Essentials for Propaganda Workers does not fully operationalize Sun's version of political tutelage, it can nonetheless be seen to reflect the central party's efforts to implement tutelage and supervision, not only of the Chinese masses suggested by Sun's program, but also of party propaganda workers in Zhejiang. in that regard, it reveals the astonishingly rapid ideological realignment of the GMD into an anti-Communist party, not only at the national level, which is well known, but also on the provincial and lower levels. Drawing on material from the GMD Archives in Taipei, this article addresses issues of party organization, control, mobilization, inner party dynamics, and message content in the GMD's propaganda activities in Zhejiang province in the late 1920s. "Propaganda by the Book" adds to our knowledge of the organizational practices of both the central GMD in Nanjing and the Zhejiang provincial GMD as well as to the social history of Republican China's official print culture. 展开更多

Taiping leaders were adept at using material from traditional Chinese sources and Western Protestant writings. The Taiping Three Character Classic, or Sanzijing (SZJ) exemplifies the Taipings' skillful adaptation of a pre-existing popular text in order to propagate its religious doctrine and political ideology. The traditional SZJfeatured an appealing style and imparted Neo-Confucian values to readers. The style of traditional SZJ contained a unique pattern that was kept in latter adaptations, while the text's content was modified to suit new realities. The Taiping SZJfollowed the structure of the traditional SZJ, but it provided its own historical ideas and utopian visions, which differed from Christian Millennialism. The Taiping utopian vision was not about the future, but about a return to the period of the "the three dynasties" in Chinese history, an approach also used by Confucian intellectuals. The persuasive power in Taiping propaganda text lies in Taiping's exploitation of Chinese and Western resources, especially in utilizing existing concepts, popular texts and cultural patterns. 展开更多

At the beginning of the 20th century,American officials, newspapermen, and businessmen in China promoted and participated in the establishment of a branch of the Committee on Public Information(CPI)in China. The purposes of the China station were to compete with other foreign states seeking influence in China,to promote American values and to eventually lead China down an“American”path. The CPI China station built an image of America as a friendly country which offered political and economic assistance and held a leading position in the new postwar order,an example which China could use for its own development.Chinese people were quick to respond to this propaganda as they wanted their concerns to be addressed at the Paris Peace Conference and sought to reform their national identity. The idea of a Wilsonian international order gained support in China through effective propaganda. After the diplomatic defeat in Paris, however, some Chinese began to consider a path very different from that of America. The CPI’s promotion of a particular development path for China and new world order had various effects on the country. The propaganda came at a time when the Chinese were searching for a new national identity and gained support from many groups. In addition, the Chinese people were not passive listeners of the propaganda and did not blindly accept the information that was "fed" to them. 展开更多
