Effect of induction heating and tempering on properties and microstructures of quenched and tempered pipes

In this study,a C-Mn quenched steel tube was quickly tempered by induction heating,and the influence of the tempering temperature on its performance was studied and compared with that by traditional tempering. The results show that the yield strength of both is quite strong with regular changes in the tempering temperature,but that the tensile strength of the tube tempered by induction heating is higher than that tempered by traditional tempering by about 25 MPa,and the elongation after induction tempering is significantly higher than that after traditional tempering. The differences in the microstructures of tubes after induction and traditional tempering were compared by metallographic microscope,scanning electron microscopy,and transmission electron microscopy.Theoretical analysis was also performed. Compared with traditional tempering,a fine dispersion of precipitated carbides occurs after induction tempering,which is the main reason for the performance differences. 展开更多

An experimental 2618(Al-Cu-Mg-Fe-Ni) alloy added with trace Sc and Zr was prepared by ingot metallurgy (IM) method. The aging behavior of the alloy was studied by Vickers hardness measurement at 200℃ and 300℃. and the tensile properties of alloy specimens were measured at 20℃, 200℃, 250℃ and 300℃. The microstructure was observed by using optical microscope, SEM and TEM. It was found that the addition of Sc and Zr to 2618 alloy resulted in a primary Al_3(Sc,Zr) phase which could refine the grain because it acts as nuclei of heterogeneous crystallization in the melt during solidification. The secondary Al_3(Sc,Zr) particles were full coherent with matrix and had obvious precipitation hardening effect. They also made the S' phase precipitate more homogeneous. So the strength of alloy increases at both ambient and elevated temperatures without a decrease of ductility. The ductile fracture of alloy occurs by microvoid nucleation, growth and coalescence, so the microvoid coalescence is the dominant fracture mechanism. 展开更多

In this work, AI-7.5Si-4Cu alloy melt modified by AI-10Sr, RE and AI-5-13-B master alloys was poured into multi-step moulds made from three moulding sands, including quartz, alumina and chromite, to investigate comparatively the effects of different cooling rates of the casting mould on the alloy's microstructures and mechanical properties. The results show that with an increase in wall thickness, the cooling rate decreases, the dendrite arm spacing (DAS) increases significantly and the mechanical properties decrease steadily. The elongation is more sensitive to the cooling rate than the tensile strength. No obvious trend of the effect of wall thickness on hardness of the alloy was found. When the cooling rate is at its greatest, the microstructures and mechanical properties are the best when using chromite sand. The improvement of the properties is mainly attributed to the decrease of the DAS, the grain refinement and the metamorphic effect. Each of the three has a strong impact on the microstructures. Perovskite-based materials can be widely used in the aerospace and transportation field. Perovskite man-ganese oxides La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) thin films were grown on LaAlO3 (100) and Si (100) single crystal sub-strates by the polymer-assisted chemical solution deposi-tion (PACSD) method. Electronic transport behavior, microstructure, and magnetoresistance (MR) of LSMO thin films on different substrates were investigated. The resis-tance of LSMO films fabricated on LaAlO3 substrates is smaller than that on the Si substrates. The magnetic field reduces resistance of LSMO films both on Si and LAO in the wide temperature region, when the insulator-metal transition temperature shifts to higher temperature. The low-field magnetoresistance of LSMO films on Si in low temperature range at 1 T is larger than that of LSMO films on LAO. However, the MR of LSMO film on LAO films at room-temperature is about 5.17%. The thin films are smooth and dense with uniform nanocrystal size grain. These results demonstrate that PACSD is an effective technique for producing high quality LSMO films, which is significant to improve the magnetic properties and the application of automotive sensor. 展开更多

A cordierite was synthesized from calcined bauxite, talcum, and quartz. The properties and microstructure of the cordierite sintered samples were characterized by Archimedes' method, thermal dilatometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and so on. The experimental results showed that calcined bauxite could broaden the range of synthesizing temperature from 1300 ℃ to 1420 ℃ and get pure cordierite. The bulk density and linear thermal expansion coefficient of the sample synthesized at 1420 ℃ for 2 h were 1.97 g·cm^-3 and 2.1×10^-6 ℃^-1, respectively. The XRD analysis showed that the major crystalline phase was a-cordierite with almost no glassy matters, the SEM images illustrated a small vent hole and the size were 5 -100 μm, the well-grown hexagonal and granular cordierite grains had the sizes distributed among 0.1-8 ;xm, and providing high mechanical strength and lower linear thermal expansion coefficient. 展开更多

Effects of Strain Rate,Temperature and Grain Size on the Mechanical Properties and Microstructure Evolutions of Polycrystalline Nickel Nanowires:A Molecular Dynamics Simulation

Through molecular dynamics(MD) simulation, the dependencies of temperature, grain size and strain rate on the mechanical properties were studied. The simulation results demonstrated that the strain rate from 0.05 to 2 ns–1 affected the Young's modulus of nickel nanowires slightly, whereas the yield stress increased. The Young's modulus decreased approximately linearly; however, the yield stress firstly increased and subsequently dropped as the temperature increased. The Young's modulus and yield stress increased as the mean grain size increased from 2.66 to 6.72 nm. Moreover, certain efforts have been made in the microstructure evolution with mechanical properties association under uniaxial tension. Certain phenomena such as the formation of twin structures, which were found in nanowires with larger grain size at higher strain rate and lower temperature, as well as the movement of grain boundaries and dislocation, were detected and discussed in detail. The results demonstrated that the plastic deformation was mainly accommodated by the motion of grain boundaries for smaller grain size. However, for larger grain size, the formations of stacking faults and twins were the main mechanisms of plastic deformation in the polycrystalline nickel nanowire. 展开更多
