A novel dataset is presented that reveals a general pattern of declining favourability in news stories about Confucius Institutes(CIs)from 2006 through 2015 in six English-speaking countries:the US,the UK,Canada,Austr...A novel dataset is presented that reveals a general pattern of declining favourability in news stories about Confucius Institutes(CIs)from 2006 through 2015 in six English-speaking countries:the US,the UK,Canada,Australia,India and Kenya.There are sig-nificant differences in mean favourability and time trends across countries,however.Decreasing trends in favourability are observed in the US and Canada,in particular,whereas Kenya and India’s time trends are nil or possibly increasing.We report empir-ical models of favourability conditional on GDP per capita,trade with China and the number of CIs across country-year observa-tions.Consistent with Pew polling data,our data reveal an inter-esting pair of conflicting income effects.High-income countries tend to be more negative and less positive on CIs than low-income countries overall.Within-country positive shocks to real GDP per capita,however,are positively associated with favourabil-ity after cross-country differences in income levels are absorbed by country fixed effects.The number of CIs in a country has mixed effects on the favourability of news coverage about CIs across country-year observations.Despite billions of dollars spent on public diplomacy by the Chinese government,our findings suggest that its return on investment in public diplomacy in the form of CIs may not be as expected.展开更多

文摘Savoring food is capable of triggering tangible and vivid emotional interactions that transcend language and geographical boundaries.Culinary diplomacy represents one of the most enthusiastic instruments of cultural diplomacy.Culinary diplomacy,gastrodiplomacy under certain contexts,is outlined as using food and national cuisine to create multicultural connections,with the aim of improving communication and long-term cultural understanding.Research on Egyptian youth’s acculturation with respect to food attitudes,habits,and environment is very limited.Hence,this study examines the role of culinary diplomacy as a public diplomacy instrument aiming to enhance foreign publics’perceptions.This study analyzes the usage of culinary diplomacy as a means to develop an edible nation-brand,reflected in foreign publics’behavior,perceptions,and consumption patterns.A quantitative survey has been distributed among Egyptians to assess and evaluate their perception,attitude,and behavior towards the use of food as a public diplomacy tool and its tagged symbolic connotations,ideas,values,identities,and behavior.
文摘As the admittedly top-level English competition in China,the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press(FLTRP)English Speech Contest has celebrated its 20-year anniversary.The competition not only provides a platform for the contestants to showcase their talent but also serves as a think tank for teachers to gain insight and inspiration as to the latest teaching methods and national educational policies.This essay finds evidence,by examining the given topics for prepared speech,to prove that increasing attention is being shifted from language skills acquisition to intercultural competence and cultural identity construction of the students.In light of the ever-globalized world,the issue is further complicated by the emergence and wide use of new media which accents the influence of individuals in public diplomacy.
文摘Maritime public diplomacy is needed to assist in implementing China’s maritime power strategy and joint construction of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.As a part of major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics in the new era,China’s maritime public diplomacy follows the concept of building the maritime community with a shared future,and aims to explain China’s maritime strategy,strengthen maritime cooperation,expand the blue circle of friends,spread China’s traditional marine culture,and enhance blue soft power.Since Chinese government departments,coastal cities,central enterprises,mainstream media,and think tanks are politically reliable and can easily coordinate with each other,a"five in one"layout of maritime public diplomacy could allow them work together in the maritime field.
文摘A novel dataset is presented that reveals a general pattern of declining favourability in news stories about Confucius Institutes(CIs)from 2006 through 2015 in six English-speaking countries:the US,the UK,Canada,Australia,India and Kenya.There are sig-nificant differences in mean favourability and time trends across countries,however.Decreasing trends in favourability are observed in the US and Canada,in particular,whereas Kenya and India’s time trends are nil or possibly increasing.We report empir-ical models of favourability conditional on GDP per capita,trade with China and the number of CIs across country-year observa-tions.Consistent with Pew polling data,our data reveal an inter-esting pair of conflicting income effects.High-income countries tend to be more negative and less positive on CIs than low-income countries overall.Within-country positive shocks to real GDP per capita,however,are positively associated with favourabil-ity after cross-country differences in income levels are absorbed by country fixed effects.The number of CIs in a country has mixed effects on the favourability of news coverage about CIs across country-year observations.Despite billions of dollars spent on public diplomacy by the Chinese government,our findings suggest that its return on investment in public diplomacy in the form of CIs may not be as expected.
