Data Collection and Research on the Vitality of Public Space in Traditional Villages: A Case Study of Cuandixia Village

The optimization and renewal of rural space is the foundation for building livable,business friendly and harmonious countryside.Three types of data on the spatial vitality of traditional villages are collected and analyzed.A street and alley axis map model is established using spatial syntax,and the degree of industry aggregation is quantified using POI data,and the results of syntactic calculation are validated with the help of popular review text preferences.Taking Cuandixia Village as an example,this paper found that its public space nodes have a pattern of one axis and scattered points;the street and alley space is well preserved but slightly lacking in transportation;the user group is single and the form is traditional.This paper could provide corresponding suggestions for stimulating the vitality of public spaces in traditional villages,in order to provide inspiration for the revitalization design of public spaces in traditional villages.

Sustainable Development Potential of Public Space in Traditional Villages:Taking Yincheng,Shanxi Province as an Example

With the development of society and the advancement of science and technology,the street texture,architectural style,and spatial pattern of many traditional villages have been destroyed,which has seriously affected the style and environment of the entire village.To protect features of traditional villages and to better inherit the history and culture,the protection and development status of traditional villages must be explored,the public space of traditional villages should be evaluated from different perspectives and the public space issues summarized.Then,corresponding transformation and renewal strategies should be proposed.

Typology-based Vitality Promotion of Urban Waterfront Public Space in the Three Gorges Reservoir

Revitalization of waterfront-a precious resource of city has gradually become popular worldwide. Cities around the Three Gorges Reservoir grow and proper for the Yangtze River,thus waterfront in these cities has been long ignored or faced with "constructive destruction" with the city development. This paper divided urban waterfront public spaces around the Three Gorges into 3 kinds of spaces,namely point,line and surface,from the perspective of typology,and put forward strategies such as functional renovation,and improvement of spatial scale from the perspectives of land use and traffic,to enhance the vitality of waterfront public space.

Genius Loci of Urban Public Spaces: A Case Study of Daihu Lake Landscape Planning in New Shouzhan District, Changle City, Fujian Province

Connotations of genius loci of urban public spaces were explored, geographical position and composition of Daihu landscape design in New Shouzhan District, Changle City, Fujian Province was introduced. Design concepts, layouts and patterns were summarized by combining with geographical and cultural conditions of the study area. Functional zoning of Daihu landscape design was analyzed, human-centered site planning stressed to realize functions of new urban public spaces, regression of cultural and humanistic properties of these spaces, so as to provide diverse options for the future construction of urban public spaces.

Research on the Optimization of Public Spaces in Urban Villages Based on Space Syntax:A Case Study of Luochengtou Village in Handan City

This paper based on the theory of space syntax took Luochengtou Village in Handan City,Hebei Province for example,tried to figure out a proper way for the renewal of urban villages,and change the current dilemma of"one-size-fits-all"and"removing all"in most cases,and put forward that local conditions and regional characteristics must be considered to propose the renewal strategies more suitable for the targeted objects.Based on the space syntax Depthmap software and field investigation,the paper analyzed the accessibility,intelligibility and throughput of public spaces in Luochengtou Village,and put forward 3 optimization strategies in view of the problems such as insufficient public spaces,poor accessibility and intelligibility of roads,and poor activity of spaces,specifically,increasing public activity spaces,sorting out public space network,and creating active space nodes,so as to optimize public environment of the village,enhance villagers’sense of belonging,sense of safety and sense of identity.

This paper summarized concept and role of urban public space, highlighted its role in emotional exchange, cultural exchange, and business communication, and the significance of showing inside image of the city in terms of morality and residents' quality. Combining with design of historical and cultural buildings, the paper explored the forms of historical and cultural buildings in urban public spaces from the perspectives of administration square, religious square, cultural square and commercial street, so as to design "human-concerned" urban public spaces that meet human needs and reflect personality of the city.

Sustainable living neighbourhoods:Measuring public space quality and walking environment in Lisbon

Obesity and global warming are two major challengesthat affect communities’health and quality of life.Providing good walking environments,with appropriate pedestrian infrastructure,green areas and access to commercial retail and transport hubs favour liveable,healthy,and sustainable cities.The Lisbon City Hall has implemented an intervention program in the public space as a strategy to improve environmental quality and mitigate the effects of climate change.The program“A square in each neighbourhood”intends not only to reinforce the economic base of Lisbon,namely tourism,restaurants,commerce,and creative activities but also to promote physical activity and improve the quality of living of all citizens.For studying the impact of the public space quality on the walking environment,Campolide,a typical Lisbon neighbourhood,Portugal,which includes one of the requalified squares,was selected.A two-step methodology based on spatial modelling is proposed.In the first step,the public space quality was evaluated based on a set of 13 urban quality attributes.Attributes,intended for the street level,were collected from open data platforms and complemented with a field survey.Then,through spatial analysis,these attributes were used to build the Pedestrian Environment Quality Indicator and the Priority Intervention Indicator.Using these indicators,walking-friendly streets were mapped and the most critical sites that require priority intervention were identified to prepare for the requalification planning process.The street with the highest quality in the study area according to the dimensions evaluated-connectivity,convenience,comfort,cleanliness,and conviviality-has a great offer of trees,bus stops,commercial establishments,commercial diversity,crossings,paper bins/eco points and esplanades.On the opposite side of the rank,the street with the lowest quality has no trees or green areas,transport stops,benches and tables,or commercial activity.The urban quality indicators constitute a helpful tool for city planners and policymakers when planning sustainable living neighbourhoods.

Human Behavior in Downtown Public Spaces during Cooling Periods in Winter Cities

There is an urban design problem that outdoor public spaces are not used for long periods of time within a year due to coldness and snow cover in cities with severe winter climates （winter cities）. Therefore, an urban design that promotes activities in these spaces is required for winter cities. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the relationship between outdoor environmental conditions and the behaviors of people in outdoor public spaces. This six-month study conducted a field survey in six kinds of public spaces in downtown Sapporo and analyzed the changes of microclimates and sitting behaviors in these spaces. The analysis revealed that sitting behaviors decreased with temperature drops during the cooling period （20 ~C-8 ~C）, that sunlight could suppress the reduction in the number of sitting behaviors, and that wind speed could suppress the reduction in the duration of sitting behaviors.

Making Public Space in High-density Environment: Strategy and Methodology of Landscape Urbanism

High concentration of population and other elements brought by high urbanization has pushed the future construction of urban public spaces to be both "compact" and "ecological". Theory and methodology of landscape urbanism provides a new perspective for the construction of public spaces in high-density urban environment. Based on the concept and basic standpoints of landscape urbanism, this paper elaborated its potential value in spatial connection, functional integration and vitality promotion, and also analyzed practical strategies of landscape urbanism from three perspectives of structure, fold and stage by combining with typical cases, so as to provide references for designing urban public spaces in high-density environment.

Quality Construction of Public Space from the Perspective of Human Settlement: A Case Study of Public Space in the Downtown Area of Mianyang City, Sichuan Province

Concept, connotation and property of urban public space were interpreted, guidance of human settlement science for the construction of urban public space analyzed. By the 21^(st) century,there have been many environmental problems exposed in China.Since the Chinese economic reform^([1]),agriculture^([2])and industry^([3])have undergone great transformation and development,which have affected the environment of public life.In the recent 15 years,some large (or important) cities have gradually transformed into a service economy and transferred heavy industrial factories.During this period,most factories were abandoned and deserted,which occupied the public space and affected the urban landscape.To some extent,they were abandoned by people because of the precipitation of other historical cultures or the influence of modern urbanization.However,these forgotten industrial factories witnessed the growth and development of a city,both its flourishing and decline.Currently,urban space becomes a people-oriented place that values the experience of individuals,rather than what is limited to the communication philosophy characterized by simplicity and functionalism^([4]).There is a discussion that gradually becomes hot,which is that methods to transform into a qualitative space for the experience of residents and visitors,as well as creating a pleasant public space.Meanwhile,the quality of urban space is an essential factor in evaluating modern cities,as an innovation-oriented and unified city.

The Planning of Rural Public Space Influenced by the Cultural Tourism Industry

Effectiveness of Activity Expression in VR System to Build Consensus for Public Space Planning

The objective of this study was to clarify the effectiveness of expressing activities in a virtual reality(VR)system for public space planning to support consensus building with citizens,based on the idea that it is important to consider people’s activities when creating attractive public spaces.We constructed a VR system comprising a background expressed in 3D computer graphics(3DCG)and activities expressed in real video image.As a result of the evaluation experiment,it became easier to visualize the utilization of space by expressing an activity.Although its effectiveness was clarified,some problems regarding the functioning of the system were highlighted.

The Form Characteristics and Construction of the Public Space of the Oasis Traditional Settlements in Turpan

Based on the analysis of the form characteristics and construction of the public space of oasis traditional settlements in Turpan,and from the analysis and summary of the types,elements,scales and functions of the public space of the traditional settlements,this study put forward that the public space of the oasis villages can be divided into point space,line space and plane space,and the formation and evolution rules of the public space of oasis traditional settlements in Turpan were obtained.Explore the role of public space in the construction of traditional settlements’ overall space,so as to provide reference for the development and renewal of public space of the current similar oasis settlements.

Social Participation in the Context of the Urban Public Space Renewal： The Case of Lagarteiro Neighborhood in Oporto

In 1980, Giancarlo de Carlo wrote in the Perspecta： Yale Journal, ＂An Architecture of the Participation＂. Carlo, proposed a sequence of procedures： the problem definition, the solution and the results evaluation, in all the three steps, the social communities should be integrated in as part of a share and dynamic process. This text corresponds to a new way of understanding the importance of the social communities in the architecture definition. From de Carlo＇s text, the main goal of this paper is to present the results of an intervention in public space renewal of the Lagarteiro neighborhood （in Oporto city） and the relation of this process with the participation of the resident population. The urban context of Lagarteiro＇s neighborhood presented before the intervention the typical and classic signs of disqualification of environmental and urban peripheral areas of resettlement. The term ＂disadvantaged areas＂ is associated with these areas in urban or peri-urban case, was framed in a specific Portuguese policy, called Initiative Critical Neighborhoods. Being a recent intervention, the renewal of the public space in Lagarteiro is a complete case study that allows comprehending the participation phenomenon in nowadays, at the same time that seduces a reflexion about technical and architectural solutions for ＂critical＂ neighborhood.
