Interactive Media Visual Interpretation of Traditional Chinese Graphics in Urban Public Spaces

Sustainable Development Potential of Public Space in Traditional Villages:Taking Yincheng,Shanxi Province as an Example

With the development of society and the advancement of science and technology,the street texture,architectural style,and spatial pattern of many traditional villages have been destroyed,which has seriously affected the style and environment of the entire village.To protect features of traditional villages and to better inherit the history and culture,the protection and development status of traditional villages must be explored,the public space of traditional villages should be evaluated from different perspectives and the public space issues summarized.Then,corresponding transformation and renewal strategies should be proposed.

Based on one of the main sound source in neighborhood public space,environment,business facilities environment as the breakthrough point,it is to consider neighborhood public space environment evaluation and social characteristics.

Typology-based Vitality Promotion of Urban Waterfront Public Space in the Three Gorges Reservoir

Revitalization of waterfront-a precious resource of city has gradually become popular worldwide. Cities around the Three Gorges Reservoir grow and proper for the Yangtze River,thus waterfront in these cities has been long ignored or faced with "constructive destruction" with the city development. This paper divided urban waterfront public spaces around the Three Gorges into 3 kinds of spaces,namely point,line and surface,from the perspective of typology,and put forward strategies such as functional renovation,and improvement of spatial scale from the perspectives of land use and traffic,to enhance the vitality of waterfront public space.

Genius Loci of Urban Public Spaces: A Case Study of Daihu Lake Landscape Planning in New Shouzhan District, Changle City, Fujian Province

Connotations of genius loci of urban public spaces were explored, geographical position and composition of Daihu landscape design in New Shouzhan District, Changle City, Fujian Province was introduced. Design concepts, layouts and patterns were summarized by combining with geographical and cultural conditions of the study area. Functional zoning of Daihu landscape design was analyzed, human-centered site planning stressed to realize functions of new urban public spaces, regression of cultural and humanistic properties of these spaces, so as to provide diverse options for the future construction of urban public spaces.

Research on the Optimization of Public Spaces in Urban Villages Based on Space Syntax:A Case Study of Luochengtou Village in Handan City

This paper based on the theory of space syntax took Luochengtou Village in Handan City,Hebei Province for example,tried to figure out a proper way for the renewal of urban villages,and change the current dilemma of"one-size-fits-all"and"removing all"in most cases,and put forward that local conditions and regional characteristics must be considered to propose the renewal strategies more suitable for the targeted objects.Based on the space syntax Depthmap software and field investigation,the paper analyzed the accessibility,intelligibility and throughput of public spaces in Luochengtou Village,and put forward 3 optimization strategies in view of the problems such as insufficient public spaces,poor accessibility and intelligibility of roads,and poor activity of spaces,specifically,increasing public activity spaces,sorting out public space network,and creating active space nodes,so as to optimize public environment of the village,enhance villagers’sense of belonging,sense of safety and sense of identity.

Urban Public Spaces and Design of Historical and Cultural Buildings——Series II of Urban Public Space Design

This paper summarized concept and role of urban public space, highlighted its role in emotional exchange, cultural exchange, and business communication, and the significance of showing inside image of the city in terms of morality and residents' quality. Combining with design of historical and cultural buildings, the paper explored the forms of historical and cultural buildings in urban public spaces from the perspectives of administration square, religious square, cultural square and commercial street, so as to design "human-concerned" urban public spaces that meet human needs and reflect personality of the city.

Sustainable living neighbourhoods:Measuring public space quality and walking environment in Lisbon

Obesity and global warming are two major challengesthat affect communities’health and quality of life.Providing good walking environments,with appropriate pedestrian infrastructure,green areas and access to commercial retail and transport hubs favour liveable,healthy,and sustainable cities.The Lisbon City Hall has implemented an intervention program in the public space as a strategy to improve environmental quality and mitigate the effects of climate change.The program“A square in each neighbourhood”intends not only to reinforce the economic base of Lisbon,namely tourism,restaurants,commerce,and creative activities but also to promote physical activity and improve the quality of living of all citizens.For studying the impact of the public space quality on the walking environment,Campolide,a typical Lisbon neighbourhood,Portugal,which includes one of the requalified squares,was selected.A two-step methodology based on spatial modelling is proposed.In the first step,the public space quality was evaluated based on a set of 13 urban quality attributes.Attributes,intended for the street level,were collected from open data platforms and complemented with a field survey.Then,through spatial analysis,these attributes were used to build the Pedestrian Environment Quality Indicator and the Priority Intervention Indicator.Using these indicators,walking-friendly streets were mapped and the most critical sites that require priority intervention were identified to prepare for the requalification planning process.The street with the highest quality in the study area according to the dimensions evaluated-connectivity,convenience,comfort,cleanliness,and conviviality-has a great offer of trees,bus stops,commercial establishments,commercial diversity,crossings,paper bins/eco points and esplanades.On the opposite side of the rank,the street with the lowest quality has no trees or green areas,transport stops,benches and tables,or commercial activity.The urban quality indicators constitute a helpful tool for city planners and policymakers when planning sustainable living neighbourhoods.

Quality Construction of Public Space from the Perspective of Human Settlement: A Case Study of Public Space in the Downtown Area of Mianyang City, Sichuan Province

Concept, connotation and property of urban public space were interpreted, guidance of human settlement science for the construction of urban public space analyzed. Taking quality construction of public space in the downtown area of Mianyang City for example, this paper proposed that urban public space should be constructed from the perspective of human settlement to create positive spaces that satisfy human needs, ensure sustainable development of urban public spaces, and drive the development of a harmonious and prosperous city.

Making Public Space in High-density Environment: Strategy and Methodology of Landscape Urbanism

High concentration of population and other elements brought by high urbanization has pushed the future construction of urban public spaces to be both "compact" and "ecological". Theory and methodology of landscape urbanism provides a new perspective for the construction of public spaces in high-density urban environment. Based on the concept and basic standpoints of landscape urbanism, this paper elaborated its potential value in spatial connection, functional integration and vitality promotion, and also analyzed practical strategies of landscape urbanism from three perspectives of structure, fold and stage by combining with typical cases, so as to provide references for designing urban public spaces in high-density environment.

Making a “Quality City” Shaping an Industrial Public Space of Tangshan City:A Design Manifesto

By the 21^(st) century,there have been many environmental problems exposed in China.Since the Chinese economic reform^([1]),agriculture^([2])and industry^([3])have undergone great transformation and development,which have affected the environment of public life.In the recent 15 years,some large (or important) cities have gradually transformed into a service economy and transferred heavy industrial factories.During this period,most factories were abandoned and deserted,which occupied the public space and affected the urban landscape.To some extent,they were abandoned by people because of the precipitation of other historical cultures or the influence of modern urbanization.However,these forgotten industrial factories witnessed the growth and development of a city,both its flourishing and decline.Currently,urban space becomes a people-oriented place that values the experience of individuals,rather than what is limited to the communication philosophy characterized by simplicity and functionalism^([4]).There is a discussion that gradually becomes hot,which is that methods to transform into a qualitative space for the experience of residents and visitors,as well as creating a pleasant public space.Meanwhile,the quality of urban space is an essential factor in evaluating modern cities,as an innovation-oriented and unified city.

Effectiveness of Activity Expression in VR System to Build Consensus for Public Space Planning

The objective of this study was to clarify the effectiveness of expressing activities in a virtual reality(VR)system for public space planning to support consensus building with citizens,based on the idea that it is important to consider people’s activities when creating attractive public spaces.We constructed a VR system comprising a background expressed in 3D computer graphics(3DCG)and activities expressed in real video image.As a result of the evaluation experiment,it became easier to visualize the utilization of space by expressing an activity.Although its effectiveness was clarified,some problems regarding the functioning of the system were highlighted.

The Form Characteristics and Construction of the Public Space of the Oasis Traditional Settlements in Turpan

Based on the analysis of the form characteristics and construction of the public space of oasis traditional settlements in Turpan,and from the analysis and summary of the types,elements,scales and functions of the public space of the traditional settlements,this study put forward that the public space of the oasis villages can be divided into point space,line space and plane space,and the formation and evolution rules of the public space of oasis traditional settlements in Turpan were obtained.Explore the role of public space in the construction of traditional settlements’ overall space,so as to provide reference for the development and renewal of public space of the current similar oasis settlements.

Analysis on the Status Quo of the Public Space in Dashiyuan Community in Nanchang City and Its Renewal Strategies from Multiple Perspectives

From the perspective of big data such as Baidu heat map and GIS kernel density analysis,this paper analyzed the gathering situation of residents of Dashiyuan at different times and the use of public service facilities,as well as problems existing in the old community of Dashiyuan in Nanchang City,and put forward targeted recommendations.

Research on Emergency Design and Renewal Strategy of Public Space in Old Communities Based on Public Health Emergencies:A Case Study of No.4 Courtyard of Luochengtou Community, Handan City

There are a large number of old communities in Chinese cities that urgently need to be updated and upgraded.However,the old community renewal in the past mostly focused on the transformation of physical environment with a single goal.There is a lack of in-depth thinking about the problems presented by the public space in the old communities,and it is necessary to focus on this.The continuous occurrence of public health incidents has increased the pressure on urban development,and old communities have become shortcomings in such incidents.It is a topic worthy to study whether the emergency design update of public spaces can supplement the shortcomings of old communities in public health emergencies.Based on the background of public health emergencies,combined with the theory of resilient cities,the study analyzes the emergency design of public space in the old communities and conducts a research on the renewal strategy,taking the No.4 Courtyard of Luochengtou Community in Handan City as an example.The improvement strategies of management,transportation,structure and space are specifically put forward,in order to provide reference for the emergency design update of old communities.

Application of Landscape Trilism in Landscape Design of Rural Public Spaces:A Case Study of Landscape Restoration in Villagers'Committee of Madian Village

Based on the landscape trilism,this study analyzed the problems in the landscape promotion of the village,infrastructure and garden settings construction,rural culture and cohesion in the landscape restoration project of the Villagers’Committee of Madian Village(hereinafter referred to as“Madian Vil agers’Committee”)and the affiliated green spaces,and proposed corresponding suggestions.The results showed that solving realistic problems pertinently according to the 3 layers of the trilism achieved positive effectandhadpracticalsignificant.Through the reasonable renovation and improvement,landscape restoration project of Madian Villagers’Committee was much improved,which provided theoretical and practical references for landscape renovation of other rural public spaces.

Urban Residual Space in Latin America: Reframing the Role of Public Space in Colombia

The metropolises of the global south are often considered out of rules as a distinct urban“species”while cities of the global north are commonly recognized for their development,organization,and operation.The duality that arises in Latin American cities is between the advancement of its infrastructure and the provision of goods and services.This duality is physically manifested in urban space,as well as the increase of spatial segregation and social inequality.Fragments,patches,archipelagos,and countless denominations that narrow the“disorder”of these cities contrast with the good practices they develop to increase the quality of life of their inhabitants.Life in public space is one of the interrelationships that occur in cities,but in some spaces in Latin American cities are considered fragments and uncertain spaces of the city without defined uses due to the characteristics of some of these spaces.These spaces,specifically in Colombian cities,commonly divide the large areas of poverty with the few areas of wealth,providing greater inequality and socio-spatial segregation.Considering Latin America as the most violent and inequitable region in the world explains why the research of recent decades in these cities has focused on understanding the causes and finding answers to minimize poverty,and inequality.These phenomena will not find the full answers in architecture nor urbanism;however,actions from these two disciplines are required to materialize opportunities for all the cities.Thus,the purpose of the research,based on literature review,methodological terms,and collection of information is reframing the role of public space as a potential for articulation with the deficit of public space and as a tool of urban development.

Revitalization Design of Public Spaces in Old Residential Communities: a Case Study of Qingshanhu Community in Nanchang City

Public space is an important part of a dty and also a crucial carrier for public activities. During the urban development, the overall environmental quality of old residential communities has degraded gradually for the lack of maintenance and upgrading, its public spaces have failed to satisfy routine needs of residents. To remodel the vitality of public spaces in old residential communities, this paper based on the field investigation of Qingshanhu Community in Nanchang City explored the thoughts of revitalizing public spaces in old residential communities from the aspects of society and material environment, and put forward the strategies of designing vitality of public spaces in old residential communities.
