The Chinese classical novel Jin Ping Mei abounds with a large number of slangs,which correspondingly leads to the difficulty of the novel’s English translation and also gives rise to the emergence of diversified Engl...The Chinese classical novel Jin Ping Mei abounds with a large number of slangs,which correspondingly leads to the difficulty of the novel’s English translation and also gives rise to the emergence of diversified English versions.The two English translators,Clement Egerton and David Roy,adopted completely different translation strategies when dealing with Chinese slangs in the novel.Their different translation purposes account for the significant disparity concerning the slang translation.Clement Egerton pays more attention to the novel’s plot in his English version The Golden Lotus,rather than the unique expressions of the original language,so that in the concrete translation process,a domestication strategy is adopted for the sake of the target language readers’understanding,resulting in distortion and omission of the slang expressions in the translated text.By contrast,the translation purpose which guides David Roy’translation The Plum in the Golden Vase is to convey the complexity and literariness of the original Chinese text,and hence the foreignization strategy is employed concerning slang translation,which aims to accurately reproduce the unique expressions of slangs in the original text.Comparatively speaking,David Roy’s translation succeeds in preserving the Chinese slangs to the greatest extent both in form and meaning,and can shed light for the slang translation in other Chinese literary works.展开更多

Low income is the main problem of millions of farmers who are cultivating 4.81 million hectares in the Philippines. This problem is attributed to challenges specifically low yield, low quality of produce, and signific...Low income is the main problem of millions of farmers who are cultivating 4.81 million hectares in the Philippines. This problem is attributed to challenges specifically low yield, low quality of produce, and significant post-harvest losses, particularly in a resource-scarce setting. This study aimed to help increase the farmers’ income in selected towns of Nueva Ecija through the promotion and use of special purpose rice production technology. Twenty (20) farmer-cooperators in three towns of Nueva Ecija were selected to demonstrate the production technology covering a total area of 4.75 hectares during the dry season, and 3.3 hectares during the wet season, both in 2023. Extension modalities such as training, techno-demo establishment, information material and technical assistance provision, and market linkage were undertaken to enhance their knowledge, attitude, and skills on special rice production and enterprise. The study utilized the descriptive quantitative method wherein the data were gathered through surveys, specifically personal interviews. Results showed that 70% of the farmer-cooperators were male and 60% were living below the poverty threshold. The farmers were 53 years old on average and engaged in farming as their primary source of income. The average yield of special purpose rice particularly the CLS-2 variety was higher (6.46 MT/ha and 6.22 MT/ha during dry and wet seasons, respectively) than that of inbred or non-special rice. The income per hectare from special purpose rice production per hectare was Php 75,420.00, which is higher than that of regular rice at Php 29,389.00, giving a higher benefit of Php 46,031.00. The technology adopters and area planted increased (from 6 to 9 and from 1.4 hectares to 2.75 hectares, respectively) in Licab, Nueva Ecija. The opposite was true in Sto. Domingo and Guimba, Nueva Ecija where farmers were discouraged by the marketing issues that arose.展开更多

However,previous studies on trip purposes mainly focused on questionnaires and GPSd ata,which cannot well reflect the characteristics of automobile travel. In order to avoid the multi-dayb ehavior variability and unobservable heterogeneity of individual characteristics ignored in traditional traffic questionnaires,traffic monitoring data from the Northern District of Qingdao are used,and the K-meansc lustering method is applied to estimate the trip purposes of automobile users. Then,Adaptive Boosting(AdaBoost)and Random Forest(RF)methods are used to classify and predict trip purposes. Background:According to previous studies on professional English course teaching,the evaluation of course teaching was positive,but the vast majorities focus on medical English literature reading,professional English ...Background:According to previous studies on professional English course teaching,the evaluation of course teaching was positive,but the vast majorities focus on medical English literature reading,professional English vocabulary,and professional English translation.As an alternative,the course design based on academic learning needs under the outcome-oriented education/model emphasizes the improvement of students'comprehensive ability in oral expression,literature reading,writing,and academic communication.Objectives:The objective of this study was to analyze nursing postgraduates'opinions on learning the outcome-oriented academic English course.Methods:This is a cross-sectional descriptive study.A total of 150 first-year nursing postgraduates enrolled in the“Academic Professional English for Nursing Postgraduates”course.After completing the course learning,students scanned QR codes generated by the online questionnaire and completed it anonymously within 48 h.Results:The students who participated in this course strongly believed that it“helped them strengthen their English speakability”(4.8 points),“made them more confident to participate in international academic conferences and exchanges in the future”(4.8 points),and“helped them apply English more in the nursing professional field in the future”(4.7 points).Conclusions:The implementation of outcome-oriented course teaching helps students to understand the research of foreign scholars and effectively express their own research content with English as a tool.It motivates them to continuously use English for professional and academic communication.展开更多

Adolescence is a critical time for the cultivation of life purpose,also known as a meaningful long-term aim focused on contribution to others.Youth with purpose,especially marginalized youth,report a number of positiv...Adolescence is a critical time for the cultivation of life purpose,also known as a meaningful long-term aim focused on contribution to others.Youth with purpose,especially marginalized youth,report a number of positive outcomes.Relationships with caring adults appear to be particularly helpful in guiding young people on their path to purpose,but little work has focused specifically on the role of mothers.This qualitative study,approved by a Institutional Review Board,examines how twenty adolescents from marginalized communities describe their sense of purpose and its relationship to their caregivers.The sample size was determined based on saturation,a process in qualitative research when the researchers begin to observe redundancy in the data.Through content analysis,a major theme emerged:the role of mothers and their impact on purpose development on their children.Results showed that mothers helped their adolescents develop their sense of purpose through serving as a sense of inspiration,providing the adolescents with support,sparking a desire for the adolescents to make their mothers proud,and through the mothers and adolescents in engaging in conversations about one’s future.展开更多
Under an environment full of competitive stress,students tend to form negative emotions,and the time for them to engage in physical exercise is greatly limited due to overwhelming academic tasks.Therefore,in this pape...Under an environment full of competitive stress,students tend to form negative emotions,and the time for them to engage in physical exercise is greatly limited due to overwhelming academic tasks.Therefore,in this paper,we focus on acknowledging the purpose of physical exercise,and how physical exercise affects the mental health of students under stressful circumstances but not in the context of leisure.Questionnaire was distributed to participants with an average age of 20,to investigate their preference,frequency,and reason for exercising,and their attitude towards it.Our results showed that participants think that exercise can strengthen the body,relieve stress,improve fitness and interpersonal relationship regardless of their purpose such as interests,emotional necessity and even out of non-subjective ideas.In conclusion,physical exercise helped to improve students’mental health especially under great pressure and ultimately,it will enhance their academics and bring about the unity of mind and body.展开更多
Objective:The Delphi method was used to propose health effect evaluation indicators to assess foods for special medical purposes(FSMPs).This lays the foundation for the formation of a big data model for human health t...Objective:The Delphi method was used to propose health effect evaluation indicators to assess foods for special medical purposes(FSMPs).This lays the foundation for the formation of a big data model for human health testing,as well as a big data platform for the health and safety evaluation of special medical foods.Methods:The Delphi method was used to conduct two rounds of expert consultation on the constructed FSMP health effect evaluation indicators.Results:Ten major items were identified after two rounds of expert consultation.Among these,there were 10 primary entries,32 secondary entries,50 tertiary entries,and 28 quaternary entries.Conclusion:The complete list of evaluation indicators contains 10 entries,which can comprehensively and systematically monitor adverse reactions to the use of FSMPs.The present findings lay the foundation for a big data platform to evaluate the health and safety of special foods.展开更多

However, since business English is still a new major and research field in higher education, lots of problems exist in the major construction, in which the issue of course settings is a heated one. The author believes that as for the course setting of business English that is an important branch of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), it should be based on the demand toward business English talents from the market and the characteristics of business English.This thesis will, based on the point view of student, further discuss the issue of business English. Based on the analysis, it is concluded that the course setting of business English in China is not mature enough, which has problems involved in the content and the time arrangement. The significance of this thesis is to put forward reasonable proposals in the hope of solving the problem in the course setting of business English so that the business English graduates will be fit for the needs of the society.展开更多
