Shaped Offset Quadrature Phase Shift Keying Based Waveform for Fifth Generation Communication

Fifth generation(5G)wireless networks must meet the needs of emerging technologies like the Internet of Things(IoT),Vehicle-to-everything(V2X),Video on Demand(VoD)services,Device to Device communication(D2D)and many other bandwidth-hungry multimedia applications that connect a huge number of devices.5G wireless networks demand better bandwidth efficiency,high data rates,low latency,and reduced spectral leakage.To meet these requirements,a suitable 5G waveform must be designed.In this work,a waveform namely Shaped Offset Quadrature Phase Shift Keying based Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing(SOQPSK-OFDM)is proposed for 5G to provide bandwidth efficiency,reduced spectral leakage,and Bit Error Rate(BER).The proposed work is evaluated using a real-time Software Defined Radio(SDR)testbed-Wireless open Access Research Platform(WARP).Experimental and simulation results show that the proposed 5G waveform exhibits better BER performance and reduced Out of Band(OOB)radia-tion when compared with other waveforms like Offset Quadrature Phase Shift Key-ing(OQPSK)and Quadrature Phase Shift Keying(QPSK)based OFDM and a 5G waveform candidate Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing(GFDM).BER analysis shows that the proposed SOQPSK-OFDM waveform attains a Signal to Noise Ratio(SNR)gain of 7.2 dB at a BER of 10�3,when compared with GFDM in a real-time indoor environment.An SNR gain of 8 and 6 dB is achieved by the proposed work for a BER of 10�4 when compared with QPSK-OFDM and OQPSK-OFDM signals,respectively.A significant reduction in OOB of nearly 15 dB is achieved by the proposed work SOQPSK-OFDM when compared to 16 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation(QAM)mapped OFDM. 展开更多

The generation of coherent optical subcarriers based on a concatenated dual-drive Mach-Zehnder intensity modulator (IM) and two phase modulators (PMs) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The modulation index and DC bias of PM+IM modulation are theoretically investigated. Theoretical analysis and numerical study are also carried out to examine the proposed scheme. We use 25-GHz RF synchronous sinusoidal signals to drive cascaded two-stage PMs and IM, through which we generate 28 subcaxriers with peak power fluctuations less than 4 dB. The measured tone-to-noise ratio of the subcarrier is higher than 40 dB. The experimental results show that for 100-Gb/s polarization multiplexing QPSK signal, the receiver sensitivity of the back-to-back signal is -28.6 dBm, and the power penalty is lower than 1 dB after 100-km transmission at the BER of 1 × 10-9. 展开更多

In a 28-Gbaud FTN polarization- division multiplexed quadrature phase-shift keying optical communication system, the comparison of the pro- posed modified-WPE scheme and the conventional VVPE scheme is carried out. It is proved that the proposed modified-VVPE scheme can effectively overcome the challenge of ISI induced error carrier phase estimation, which leads to a better bit error ratio performance. 展开更多

The algorithm estimates the QI parmneters of a receiver by calculating the mean, variance, and correlation coefficient of I and Q components. Then, the estimated imbalance parameters are adopted to compensate for the QI in the receiver. Simulation results show that the Q factor is considerably optimized by the application of the QI compensation algorithm in an 80-Gb/s Pol- Mux coherent optical quadrature phase-shift keying (CO-QPSK) system. Compared with conventional algorithms, the proposed algorithm exhibits better performance when the phase deviation from QI exceeds ±15°. 展开更多

An all-optical serial-to-parallel converter (SPC) utilizing two cascaded phase modulators and optical bandpass filters (OBPFs) is experimentally investigated and applied to demultiplex an 80-GBd optical timedivision multiplexing (OTDM) return-to-zero (RZ) differential quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signal. Two 40-GBd OTDM tributaries are error-free demultiplexed with a power penalty of approximately 4 dB in the worst case. With its advantages of compact structure, high speed, low power penalty, simultaneous two-tributary operation, and no assistance from a light source, the SPC has potential for use in future OTDM networks. Based on frequency-quadrupling technique, two sub-channels with a fixed 50-GHz spacing are obtained from one laser source. Using return-to-zero differential quadrature phase-shift keying (RZ-DQPSK) modulation format and polarization multiplexing (PolMux), only low-speed electronic devices of 12.5 GHz are needed for the 100-Gb/s transmitter. This eliminates the need of ultrahigh-speed optoelectronic devices and thus greatly reduces the cost. The experimental results show that this transmitter can achieve good performance in dispersion tolerance of a 25-km single mode fiber (SMF). 展开更多

This system features polarization multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying (PolMux-QPSK), lowvoltage modulation of 2-V peak-to-peak signal amplitude, and home-made 90° optical hybrid with singleended digital coherent detection. Any power amplifers before the modulator and balanced detectors are not used. A simulation framework is provided to predict a theoretical sensitivity level for the reported scheme. High sensitivity of –45.18 dBm is achieved for 2.5-Gb/s return-to-zero (RZ)-DPSK signal, and high sensitivities of –36.83 dBm (I tributary) and –35.90 dBm (Q tributary) are observed for 2.5-GBaud/s RZ-DQPSK signal in back-to-back configuration. The influence of the nonlinear propagation effect on three 400 Gb/s/ch (400G) optical fiber communication systems with typical modulation formats, dual-carrier 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM), single-carrier 16QAM (single-16QAM), and four-carrier quadrature phase-shift keying, are investigated. The received optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR), affected by the nonlinear interference noise together with the amplified spontaneous emission noise, are compared with three 400G systems and a standard 100 Gb/s/ch system by numerical simulations. Both single channel and multichannel cases are considered. Single-16QAM is found to have the best OSNR among those modulation formats. 展开更多

Using differential detection, we perform polarization-multiplexing 160-Gb/s optical non-return-to-zero (NRZ) differential quadrature phase shift keying (DQPSK) signal transmission over 100-kin standard single mode fiber at a bit error rate (BER) of less than 10^-9. The enabling technology includes clock recovery, fine dispersion compensation, and polarization tracking for de-multiplexing. Furthermore, a hybrid clock recovery scheme is proposed. The scheme is realized with ordinary devices using an optoelectrical modulator to down-convert the clock frequency and a phase-locked loop for filtering, which can provide an indication signal that simultaneously monitors residual dispersion and tracking polarization. 展开更多

Intra-symbol frequency-domain averaging(ISFA) channel response estimation is applied to suppress in-band noise,while discrete Fourier transform-spread(DFT-spread) is used to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio(PAPR) of the transmitted OFDM signal. With the aid of ISFA-based channel estimation and PAPR reduction enabled by DFT-spread,the bit-error ratio of the system after 7 km SMF-28 transmission can be improved from 2×10^-3 to error-free when the received optical power is -8.5 d Bm. 展开更多

The input 25 Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero QPSK signal is successfully multicast to five new wavelengths with all information preserved. All the multicast channels are with a power penalty less than 1.1 d B at a bit error rate(BER) of 10-3. A characterization of the conversion efficiency in terms of pump and signal powers using the BER as figure of merit is also presented, the results indicate that the pump and signal powers should be optimized to eliminate the introduced deleterious nonlinear components. 展开更多

We experimentally study wavelength conversion of 40 Gbit/s (20 Gbaud) non-return-to-zero (NRZ)-DQPSK data using FWM in a quantum dash SOA with 20 dB gain and 5 dBm output saturation power. Q factor improvement and eye diagram reshaping is shown for up to 3 nm pump-probe detuning and is superior to that reported for a higher gain bulk SOA. 展开更多
