The results show that the complex particles with a center made of Ti oxide, Al2O3, and silicate and an outside made of a small quantity of mixture of TiN and MnS are able to act as ferrite nucleation nuclei. The acicular ferrite percentage changes little with Ti. When the oxygen content was 80 ppm, the volume percentage of acicular ferrite decreased due to an increase in allotriomorphic ferrite. The larger the cooling rate and the shorter the incubation time, the finer the titanium oxide and the higher the nucleation ratio of acicular ferrite.展开更多

The shapely multilayer single pass horizontal joint could be obtairzed by using the rotating are welding process. The cold crack was not observed in the joint without controlling the heat input and selecting the consumables intentionally. Microstructure of the joint could be divided into three zones: base metal zone (BMZ) , heat-affected zone ( HAZ) and weld zone (WZ). Because of the characteristic of the rotating arc horizontal welding process, the defects in the joints were slag inclztsion formed at the interlayer of lower side wall. Tbe tensile strength and hardness of HAZ and WZ were larger than those of BMZ. The impact toughness in WZ, HAZ and BM at 0 % is equal to 11.5, 212 and 236 J, respectively.展开更多

This article presents the investigations of autogenous bead on plate and butt CO2 Laser Welding (LW) of 7 mm thick high-strength quenched and tempered low alloy SM570 (JIS) steel plates. The influence of laser welding parameters, mainly welding speed, defocusing distance and shielding gas flow rate on the weld profile, i.e., weld zone penetration depth and width, microstructure and mechanical properties of welded joints was determined. All welded joints showed smooth and uniform weld beads free from superficial porosity and undercuts. The selected best welding conditions were a laser power of 5.0 kW, welding speed of 500 mm/min, argon gas shielding flow rate of 30 L/min and a defocusing distance of -0.5 mm. It was observed that these conditions gave complete penetration and minimized the width of the weld bead. The microstructure of the welded joints was evaluated by light optical microscopy. The weld metal (WM) and heat-affected zone (HAZ) near weld metal achieved maximum hardness (355 HV). The tensile fractured samples showed the ductile mode of failure and ultimate tensile strength of 580 MPa.展开更多

The results show that the yield strength of both is quite strong with regular changes in the tempering temperature, but that the tensile strength of the tube tempered by induction heating is higher than that tempered by traditional tempering by about 25 MPa,and the elongation after induction tempering is significantly higher than that after traditional tempering. The differences in the microstructures of tubes after induction and traditional tempering were compared by metallographic microscope, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy.Theoretical analysis was also performed. Compared with traditional tempering,a fine dispersion of precipitated carbides occurs after induction tempering, which is the main reason for the performance differences.展开更多

In the small elongation stage, the boundaries between ferrite and carbide in this steel can release dislocations. As the elongations increase, the moving dislocations in the ferrite slip onto the carbides. Then, the interaction between moving dislocations and dislocations released from this boundaries, and the interaction between the dislocations moving to the carbides in every slip plane occurs. Thereby, the dislocation tangles around the carbides can be formed. In the large elongation stage, the dislocation tangles with high dislocation density and the developed dislocation cells are formed.展开更多

The influence of deformation extent (10%-50%), cone angle of die (90 °-120 °), hardness after quenching and tempering (HRC21-29) and lubricated condition on the forming load was analyzed. The results show that there is no central bursting and micro crack in the inner of the extruded specimen, and the forming quality is good. The double-peak phenomenon takes place at the front-end of the specimen; the double-peak index increases with deformation extent, and larger deformation can avoid the double-peak phenomenon. The deformation extent is the most important influencing factor, and the lubricated condition almost has no influence, which means that the phosphate coating plus soap process is still a proper lubrication method for cold extrusion of medium carbon steel after quenching and tempering. By investigating the microscopic structure before and after deformation, the initial equiaxed grain is elongated in the extrusion direction, and this feature is more significant at the front-end of specimen.展开更多

However, the combat vehicles used in military operations will be required to operate under a wide range of road conditions ranging from first class to cross country. Structural components in combat vehicles are subjected to dynamic loading with high strain rates during operation. Stress loadings within the vehicle hull of these vehicles are expected to fluctuate considerably and structural cracking especially in welds during the service life of these vehicles can lead to catastrophic failures. Under these conditions, fracture behaviour of high strain rate sensitive structural steels can be better understood by dynamic fracture toughness (K1d). Hence, an attempt was made to study dynamic fracture toughness of the armour grade quenched and tempered steel and their welds fabricated using LHF consumables. The experimental results indicate that the K1d values of the joints fabricated by shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) are higher than those of the joints fabricated using flux cored arc welding (FCAW) process.展开更多

The calculated results show that the finishing rolling impact work of the alloying non-quenched and tempered steel intensely depends on strengthening mechanisms. The solution strengthening, interface strengthening, precipita- tion strengthening of pearlite, and dispersion strengthening will result in the decrease of the finishing rolling impact work; the refinement strengthening, the precipitation strength- ening of V, Nb and Ti in α-Fe-C-V(Nb, Ti), and the residual austenite containing Ni on the boundary of α-Fe-C-Ni will increase the impact work; and the increments or decrements can be calculated with nA, ?ρ, σ (σ′) and weights of alloying elements. Calculations show that the solution strengthening, the precipitation strengthening, and the interface strengthening will result in the decrease of the finishing rolling impact work α k, and the effects of the number of atom states σ which keep the interface electron density continuous on the finishing rolling impact work α k are different. Taking the impact work and the number of atom states σ 0 keeping the electron density continuous of the phase interface α-Fe/α-Fe-C between α-Fe and α-Fe-C as reference values, the impact work of the interface will increase when σ of some interface is larger than σ 0; otherwise, the impact will decrease. Therefore, the finishing rolling impact work α k can be calculated with the impact value of the refined α-Fe matrix and the influence amounts caused by the solution strengthening, the precipitation strengthening, the interface strengthening, and the number of atom states σ which keep the interface electron density continuous. The calculated results agree well with the measured ones. In this paper, the effect of S on the impact work is also discussed.展开更多
