Jean Moreau le Jeune's Monument du costume physique et moral (Monument of physical and moral costume) presents costumes, usages, and d6cors in vogue in French high society at the end of the 18th century. In its 26 folio-sized plates, elegant appearances denote social standing. Captions added to these engravings turn them into an idealized history of manners. The 1789 Neuwied edition of the Monument sponsored by the banker and amateur artist Jean-Henri Eberts enriches each titled image with an accompanying text, written by Restif de la Bretonne. Restif's stories disrupt the unity between fashion and morality suggested by the captioned images. Interplay between image, caption, and text realigns style with deception, and makes the 1789 Monument du costume a testament to the fragility of the ancien r6gime, a world poised between order and disorder. 展开更多
