Previous study showed that the contralateral wrist might not be valid as a reference for all parameters. There is a lack of literature describing the normal range of wrist radiographic parameters in literature. As a result, a retrospective study was carried out. Patients who underwent standard wrist x-rays during the period February 2012 to February 2013 (one single year) were retrospectively reviewed. 71 patients were included. Scapholunate angle was 54.7° (±6.5°). Scapholunate interval was 2.0 mm (±0.4 mm). Ulnar variance was +1.0 mm (±1.8 mm). Carpal height was 31.8 mm (±3.0 mm). Radial inclination was 25.1° (±2.1°). All 71 patients had 1 sesamoid bone at first metacarpal. 16.9% (12 out of 71) patients had positive cortical ring signs. All these parameters are valuable clinically, especially in monitoring of the wrist disease progression, in the design of wrist implants and for future clinical research.展开更多

In order to improve on any existing facility, periodic audit evaluation is paramount. In this way proper and relevant service delivery can be achieved. Objective: To evaluate the range and volume of dental and cranio-maxillofacial diagnostic radiographic services offered at the University of Nairobi Dental Hospital (UNDH) in Kenya over a 5-year period (2006-2010). Methods: Retro-spective survey involving manual examination of patient records at the Division of Dental and cra-nio-maxillofacial Radiology registry of the UNDH. Results: Over the study period, the range of diagnostic radiographic services offered comprised of both intra- and extra- oral examinations. The total volume of radiographs taken was 48,874 among which 41,980 (86%) were intraoral and 6894 (14%) extraoral views. Among the intraoral views, 74% were bitewing, 25% periapical and only 1% were occlusal diagnostic views. The majority (95%) of the extraoral projections consisted of panoramic views and only 5% constituted other techniques. The volume of radiographs was high from January to September while November and December had the lowest number of examination requests. Conclusion: Intraoral radiography was the commonest examination with bitewings having been the majority while the panoramic tomography was the commonest extraoral examination performed.展开更多

Methodology: Processed radiographs from the darkroom with evidence of radiographic anatomical markings were selected randomly and reviewed using a viewing box, within a 4-week period. The radiation field in which markers were placed was noted for each radiograph. Faintly-appearing and partly coned- off markers were excluded. Simple statistical tools were used to derive central tendency. Result: 623 radiographs were assessed. 89.0% (n = 555) had markers in the primary radiation field while 11.0% (n = 68) were in the secondary radiation field. 98% (n = 611) of markers did not obstruct essential anatomy while 2% (n = 12) did, but the radiographs were neither repeated nor rejected because of the twin reason of reportability and the need to avoid additional radiation dose to patients. Conclusion: Radiographers in the centre preferred the primary radiation field for marker placement to avoid cone-off, cut-off and illegibility which leads to repeat. This, however, does not offer superior advantage to markers placed in secondary radiation field. It is recommended that marker placement preference should be guided by the need for legibility, aesthetics and avoidance of essential anatomy.展开更多

Methods: A comprehensive search of Medline? database was undertaken with the following search terms and MeSH headings: clavicle, fractures, bone, radiography, and X-ray. We included articles in English published from 1950 to present. We ruled out fractures in children, fracture dislocations, open fractures, those with neurological and vascular injuries and fractures involving the acromioclavicular or sternoclavicular joints. Findings: Of the 821 citations obtained, only four studies proved eligible. In the most pertinent, four orthopaedic surgeons were shown standard views (antero-posterior and 20°cephalic tilt) of 50 clavicle fractures and then additional two views (45°cephalic and caudal tilt), and found that alternative views influenced their decision making, with more surgeons opting for surgical fixation. In a different study, it was shown that orthogonal views of the clavicle increased surgeons’ understanding and improved their treatment of these fractures. The third paper was a case series on clavicle fractures that were missed on the initial antero-posterior radiograph, and the fourth paper postulated that postero-anterior views of the thorax were most accurate in determining length of the clavicle. Conclusion: Studies showing an optimal view for assessment of clavicle fractures with a decision to then progressing to operative fixation are few, but the evidence points towards surgical fixation when alternative views of mid-shaft clavicle fractures are present.展开更多

An articular step superior to 2 mm is pejorative, for that an adequate radiologic analysis is necessary accessing to the best surgical treatment. The purpose of our study was to investigate this type of fracture and expose radiologic analysis (radiograph and CT-scan) of bone and ligamentous associated lesions of this specific twisted lunate facet fracture for recognizing it and accessing to the best surgical treatment. Patients and Methods: Seven patients with severely displaced type 4 articular fractures of the distal radius whose wrists had been exposed to violent compression are reported in our series, they are required open treatment for the reduction and fixation of disrupted articular surfaces by using an antero-medial approach which allows direct access to the fragment of the lunate facet and easier visualization of the distal radio-ulnar joint. Results: All the patients were clinically examined with antero-posterior and lateral X ray, completed by a CT scan, all the fractures were type IV according to Melone classification. In all of our seven cases there was a lesion of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) identified in the CT scan. The CT scan allowed us to individualize well the void of the lunate fossa and calculate his exact degree of rotation, which is very important for planning therapeutic management. Discussion: In all of our cases the CT scan was to expose all of the osseous and ligamentous injuries;in the sagittal reconstruction we were able to objectify and calculate the exact degree of the rotation of the lunate fossa fragment;in the frontal reconstruction the void of the lunate fossa is visible and in the axial reconstruction we can determine the incongruence of the distal radio-ulnar joint (DRUJ). Intra-articular involvement has long been recognized as a poor prognostic factor in fractures of the distal radius. However, despite early studies reporting poor results with non operative treatment for these injuries, most authors opposed operative intervention, due to lack of a good radiological analysis and the CT scan;knowledge that a number of studies have shown that inadequate reduction of intra-articular distal radius fractures leads to the development of arthritis.展开更多

The localisation error between the predictive and functional approach was compared using the radiographic measurements as the reference. The operated leg was compared to the non-operated leg.RESULTS: A significant difference was found for the distance between the HJC and the mid-pelvis when comparing the predictive and functional method. The functional method leads to fewer errors. A statistical difference was found for the localization error between the predictive and functional method. The functional method is twice more precise.CONCLUSION: Although being more individualized, the functional method improves HJC localization and should be used in three-dimensional gait analysis.展开更多

This paper presents a proposed method for the automatic detection of weld defects in radiographic images. Firstly, the radiographic images were enhanced using adaptive histogram equalization and are filtered using mean and wiener filters. Secondly, the welding area is selected from the radiography image. Thirdly, the Cepstral features are extracted from the Higher-Order Spectra (Bispectrum and Trispectrum). Finally, neural networks are used for feature matching. The proposed method is tested using 100 radiographic images in the presence of noise and image blurring. Results show that in spite of time consumption, the proposed method yields best results for the automatic detection of weld defects in radiography images when the features were extracted from the Trispectrum of the image.展开更多

Mostpatients with angiomyolipomas are middle-aged women who commonly present with epigastric fullness orpain. Angiomyolipomas are tumors consisting of three tissue types: blood vessels, smooth muscle, and fat.Hepatic angiomyolipomas may be difficult to differentiate from other liver neoplasms by noninvasiveimaging. We report a 58-year-old asymptomatic woman with a mass in the right lobe of the liver, foundincidentally on routine abdominal sonography. Preoperative radiographic evaluation revealed a 6.5-cmhypervascular lesion abutting the inferior vena cava. Preoperative histologic study demonstrated anepithelial neoplasm suspicious for hepatocellular carcinoma. Metastatic workup was negative. Atresection, the tumor was found to be an angiomyolipoma composed of lipoid, vascular and smooth musclecells. Further staining was positive for HMB-45. Resection margins were negative. The woman had anuneventful recovery and was discharged on postoperative day seven. She currently remains well severalmonths after her right hepatectomy.展开更多

Densitometric stability and film processing have important effect on the radiographs quality. The aim of the present study was to compare the densitometric stability of intra oral E+ and Insight film, which were processed by Champion and Teifsaz solutions. Materials and methods: A lab trial study was conducted. Radiographic images were taken of 56 E and Insight through lead step-wedge. Films were processed by new and in aging Champion and Teifsaz solutions every four days. After 56 days, the radiographic density of each film was calculated by Photoshop software. The contrast of each image was calculated by distracting maximum and minimum density. The resultant data were coded in SPSS software and analyzed by two-way variance analysis. Results: There is significant difference between the mean of density of processed films with the two different chemicals (Champion & Teifsaz) (P-value + and Insight films (P- value = 0.717). Conclusion: Densitometric stability of new Insight film is as the same as currently used E+ film and is better preserved with Champion chemicals than Teifsaz solutions.展开更多

文摘Radiographical modalities have become important diagnostic tools in cases of ulcerative colitis(UC).Imaging can be used non-invasively to determine the extent of involvement, severity of disease and to detect disease-related complications and extra-intestinal inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)manifestations. While abdominal X-rays and barium enemas still retain their relevance in specific clinical settings, the use of computed tomography enterography(CTE)or magnetic resonance enterography(MRE)are now used as first-line investigations to exclude active small bowel disease in IBD patients and can be utilized to detect active colonic inflammation.Additionally,CT colonography and MR colonography are emerging techniques with potential applications in UC.Ultrasonography, leukocyte scintigraphy and positron emission tomography are novel abdominal imaging modalities currently being explored for IBD interrogations. This plethora of radiological imaging options has become a vital component of UC assessments.

文摘In this study,we employed a non-invasive approach based on the collisional radiative(CR)model and optical emission spectroscopy(OES)measurements for the characterization of gas tungsten arc welding(GTAW)discharge and quantification of Zn-induced porosity during the GTAW process of Fe–Al joints. The OES measurements were recorded as a function of weld current, welding speed, and input waveform. The OES measurements revealed significant line emissions from Zn-I in 460–640 nm and Ar-I in 680–800 nm wavelength ranges in all experimental settings. The OES coupled CR model approach for Zn-I line emission enabled the simultaneous determination of both essential discharge parameters i.e.electron temperature and electron density.Further, these predictions were used to estimate the Zn-induced porosity using OES-actinometry on Zn-I emission lines using Ar as actinometer gas.The OES-actinometry results were in good agreement with porosity data derived from an independent approach,i.e.x-ray radiography images. The current study shows that OES-based techniques can provide an efficient route for real-time monitoring of weld quality and estimate porosity during the GTAW process of dissimilar metal joints.
文摘Introduction: Intra-articular distal radial fractures in young patients occur in high energy trauma which can lead to a combination of bone and ligaments lesions. However, despite early studies reporting poor results with non operative treatment for these injuries, most authors opposed operative intervention, due to lack of a good radiological analysis and the CT scan;knowledge that a number of studies have shown that inadequate reduction of intra-articular distal radius fractures leads to the development of arthritis.

文摘Background:This study aims to predict the extraction difficulty of mandibular third molars based on panoramic images using transfer learning while employing super-resolution(SR)technology to enhance the feasibility and validity of the prediction. Methods:We reviewed a total of 608 preoperative mandibular third molar panoramic radiographs from two medical facilities:the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University(n=509;456 in the training set and 53 in the test set)and the Henan Provincial Dental Hospital(n=99 in the validation set).We conducted a deep-transfer learning network on high-resolution(HR)panoramic radiographs to improve the longitudinal resolution of the images and obtained the SR images.Subsequently,we constructed models named Model-HR and Model-SR using high-dimensional quantitative features extracted through the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator method. The models’performances were evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic curve(ROC).To assess the reliability of the model,we compared the results from the test set with those of three dentists.Results:Model-SR outperformed Model-HR(area under the curve(AUC):0.779,sensitivity:85.5%,specificity:60.9%,and accuracy:79.8%vs.AUC:0.753,sensitivity:73.7%,specificity:73.9%,and accuracy:73.7%)in predicting the difficulty of extracting mandibular third molars. Both Model-HR(AUC=0.821,95%CI 0.687–0.956)and Model-SR(AUC=0.963,95%CI 0.921–0.999)demonstrated superior performance compared to expert dentists(highest AUC=0.799,95%CI 0.671–0.927).Conclusions:Model-SR yielded superior predictive performance in determining the difficulty of extracting mandibular third molars when compared with Model-HR and expert dentists’visual assessments.
文摘AIM To examine effects of computed tomography(CT)image acquisition/reconstruction parameters on clot volume quantification in vitro for research method validation purposes.METHODS This study was performed in conformance with HIPAA and IRB Regulations(March 2015-November 2016).A ten blood clot phantom was designed and scanned on a dual-energy CT scanner(SOMATOM Force,Siemens Healthcare Gm BH,Erlangen,Germany)with varying pitch, iterative reconstruction, energy level and slicethickness.A range of clot and tube sizes were used in an attempt to replicate in vivo emboli found within central and segmental branches of the pulmonary arteries in patients with pulmonary emboli.Clot volume was the measured parameter and was analyzed by a single image analyst using a semi-automated region growing algorithm implemented in the FDA-approved Siemens syngo.via image analysis platform.Mixed model analysis was performed on the data.RESULTS On the acquisition side, the continuous factor of energy showed no statistically significant effect on absolute clot volume quantification(P=0.9898).On the other hand, when considering the fixed factor of pitch, there were statistically significant differences in clot volume quantification(P<0.0001).On the reconstruction side, with the continuous factor of reconstruction slice thickness no statistically significant effect on absolute clot volume quantification was demonstrated(P=0.4500).Also on the reconstruction side, with the fixed factor of using iterative reconstructions there was also no statistically significant effect on absolute clot volume quantification(P=0.3011).In addition, there was excellent R^2 correlation between the scale-measured mass of the clots both with respect to the CT measured volumes and with respect to volumes measure by the water displacement method.CONCLUSION Aside from varying pitch, changing CT acquisition parameters and using iterative reconstructions had no significant impact on clot volume quantification with a semi-automated region growing algorithm.

文摘AIM: To determine hip joint center(HJC) location on hip arthroplasty population comparing predictive and functional approaches with radiographic measurements.METHODS: The distance between the HJC and the mid-pelvis was calculated and compared between the three approaches. The functional method is twice more precise.CONCLUSION: Although being more individualized, the functional method improves HJC localization and should be used in three-dimensional gait analysis.
文摘Background:To evaluate morphologic, radiographic, and stereomicroscopic changes of teeth when subjected to specific high temperatures in both direct heat and gradual heat and to compare the changes among two heat groups and also among different types of teeth.Materials and Methods:An in vitro study was conducted on 90 healthy extracted human teeth,in which the teeth were divided into two groups.Group 1(45)was subjected to direct heat and Group 2(45)was subjected to gradual heat.Group 1 and Group 2 were further subdivided into three subgroups(A)anteriors,(B)premolars, and(C)molars each consisting of 15 teeth.Teeth were subjected to temperatures of 200°C,400°C,600°C,800°C,and 1000°C in a muffle electric furnace. The color changes were noted using the Revised Munsell soil color chart and the radiographic and stereomicroscopic changes were evaluated. The results obtained were subjected to statistical analysis. Results:Teeth in direct heat showed more destructive changes at lower temperatures,i.e.,400°C and 600°C when compared to gradual heat where changes are observed at 600°C and 800°C.Among different types of teeth, anteriors and premolars showed more changes when compared to molars.Interpretation and Conclusion:It can be concluded that dental evidence may provide clues to solve the mystery in fire investigations as dental structures are the last to be destroyed under extreme conditions, whether temperature, acid,or putrefaction.
文摘Image processing and image analysis are the main aspects for obtaining information from digital image owing to the fact that this techniques give the desired details in most of the applications generally and Non-Destructive testing specifically. Results show that in spite of time consumption, the proposed method yields best results for the automatic detection of weld defects in radiography images when the features were extracted from the Trispectrum of the image.
文摘ABSTRACT: Hepatic angiomyolipoma is an uncommon primary benign epithelial liver neoplasm. She currently remains well severalmonths after her right hepatectomy.

文摘AIM:To evaluate the ophthalmic manifestations, radiographic features, and prognosis of Chinese patients with primary orbital mesenchymal chondrosarcoma(MCS).METHODS:The study included 6 cases with primary orbital MCS treated at Tianjin Eye Hospital from January 2009 to December 2019.Patitent ophthalmic manifestations, radiographic features, diagnosis, pathology, therapeutic regimens, and prognosis were retrospectively reviewed.RESULTS:Six patitents with primary orbital MCS were identified. The mean age at the first visit was 33y(range,25-42y).All six patients displayed manifestations of exophthalmos, diplopia, limitation of eye displacement, upper eyelid oedema, decreased visual acuity and ptosis. The mean disease history and range were 5 and 2-8mo,respectively.The tumors were located in the superonasal extraconal compartment(2/6,33.3%),intraconal compartment(2/6,33.3%),and bitemporal extraconal compartment(2/6,33.3%),respectively.Radiographic features were a well-defined,orbital mass with calcification and ossification on computed tomography(CT),and marked heterogenous enhancement on dynamic magnetic resonance imaging(MRI).Five patients were treated with tumor resection and one patient received orbital exenteration.Five patients in the cohort received postoperative radiation therapy, two patients received chemotherapy, and one patient did not receive postoperative adjuvant therapy because he refused. The histopathologic classification revealed a tumour composed of a mixture of mature chondroid tissue surrounded by small, round, and undifferentiated mesenchymal cells.Immunohistochemistry revealed Bcl-2,vimetin,CD99,and S-100 were expressed were expressed. After surgeries, two patients have developed a local recurrence. The median recurrence time of 58 mo(52-64 mo).One patient had distant recurrence included the lungs occurred 52mo after the initial surgery.CONCLUSION:The possibilty of orbital MCS need to be considered when a painless, slowly growing orbital mass with calcification and ossification. From our experience, trimodality treatment of radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery maybe the best option.Orbital MCS has a high tendency for late recurrence, regular long-term follow-up after complete excision is mandatory.
文摘Background and objective: Proper patient treatment planning depends on correct diagnosis of its disease which could be achieved by taking high quality radiographs. Conclusion: Densitometric stability of new Insight film is as the same as currently used E+ film and is better preserved with Champion chemicals than Teifsaz solutions.
