This paper tries to investigate the using condition of interactive reading strategy in reading scientific and technological English literature of postgraduates of engineering. The study reveals that postgraduates of engineering frequently using some of strategies of the interactive reading strategy, but the overall using condition is only in the average level, and is not so flexible.展开更多
In the summer of 2023,Zhang Zhizhong’s Reading English Literature to Translate Classical Chinese Poems got published as one of the“Comparative Literature and World Literature Research Series”edited by Cao Shunqing....In the summer of 2023,Zhang Zhizhong’s Reading English Literature to Translate Classical Chinese Poems got published as one of the“Comparative Literature and World Literature Research Series”edited by Cao Shunqing.It presents Zhang’s latest theory and praxis of translating classical Chinese poems.As a kind of rewriting,Zhang’s translations are similar to modern English poems—with creative expressions in contemporary English,the enjambments from free verses,the form of concrete poetry,and the artistic conceptions of classical Chinese poetry,but without the rhymes in original works.How this poetry translation as rewriting generates in the constraints of ideology,poetics,and patronage is to be analyzed in the light of AndréLefevere’s rewriting theory.By examining the non-textual factors related to Zhang’s rewriting,it aims to reveal how this rewriting,as an experimental approach to poetry translation,can shed light on the global circulation of Chinese poetry.展开更多
The story of Goethe’s invention of'world literature'while reading a Chinese novel is an interesting one,for it prefigures the presence of alterity in the very formation of the concept.Whether we consider worl...The story of Goethe’s invention of'world literature'while reading a Chinese novel is an interesting one,for it prefigures the presence of alterity in the very formation of the concept.Whether we consider world literature as a theoretical recognition of writing to be literature or as a body of actual texts,we often frame our discussion in a language of duality:self/other,culture/cosmopolitanism,nation/world,etc.While the force of world literature has always been its alluring ideal of'one-world-ness',it is time for us to better account for its embedded alterity,which is what energizes world literature as a discipline of study in the 21stcentury.The place to start,this essay will argue,is translation/reading.Translation as reading is not only the material condition for world literature,where texts of different language congregate to form a'republic of letters',but also creates the site of an'afterlife'in which the textuality of world literature becomes visible and realized.Like writing itself,however,translation is not a transparent text for meaning.It is an exchange of alterity,but not its equivalent.The varying strategies in translation deal with alterity,thus invigorate the discourse of sameness and difference in the concept of world literature.展开更多

It employed a naturalistic research design to uncover th...This research examined the effects of a whole language-inspired literature-based reading program on pupils’ reading comprehension and attitudes toward reading. It employed a naturalistic research design to uncover the usefulness of such a program in improving children’s reading comprehension and attitudes. Results of the study showed that the program had a positive impact on pupils’ comprehension and attitudes toward reading. In the program, children were given ample opportunities to take an active role in their own learning. Factors believed to have contributed to their improved comprehension were: the regular independent activities, the engagement activities, the learner-centered classroom environment, the broader view of reading underlying the program, the teacher’s regular demonstrations of reading strategies and the daily reading activities. Attitudes were evidently enhanced by the supportive learning atmosphere, the many varied and interesting activities, the presence of literacy centers, the teacher’s daily reading aloud of stories, the pupils’ regular opportunities to read self-selected reading materials and activities, and the use of high quality children’s literature.展开更多

BACKGROUND Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours(GEP-NETs)are slow-growing cancers that arise from diffuse endocrine cells in the gastrointestinal tract(GINETs)or the pancreas(P-NETs).They are relatively uncom...BACKGROUND Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours(GEP-NETs)are slow-growing cancers that arise from diffuse endocrine cells in the gastrointestinal tract(GINETs)or the pancreas(P-NETs).They are relatively uncommon,accounting for 2%of all gastrointestinal malignancies.The usual treatment options in advanced GEP-NET patients with metastatic disease include chemotherapy,biological therapies,and peptide receptor radionuclide therapy.Understanding the impact of treatment on GEP-NET patients is paramount given the nature of the disease.Health-related quality of life(HRQoL)is increasingly important as a concept reflecting the patients’perspective in conjunction with the disease presentation,severity and treatment.AIM To conduct a systematic literature review to identify literature reporting HRQoL data in patients with GEP-NETs between January 1985 and November 2019.METHODS The PRISMA guiding principles were applied.MEDLINE,Embase and the Cochrane library were searched.Data extracted from the publications included type of study,patient population data(mid-gut/hind-gut/GI-NET/P-NET),sample size,intervention/comparators,HRQoL instruments,average and data spread of overall and sub-scores,and follow-up time for data collection.RESULTS Forty-three publications met the inclusion criteria.The heterogeneous nature of the different study populations was evident;the percentage of female participants ranged between 30%-60%,whilst average age ranged from 53.8 to 67.0 years.Eight studies investigated GI-NET patients only,six studies focused exclusively on P-NET patients and the remaining studies involved both patient populations or did not report the location of the primary tumour.The most commonly used instrument was the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-C30(n=28)with consistent results across studies;the GI-NET-specific module Quality of Life Questionnaire-GINET21 was used in six of these studies.A number of randomised trials demonstrated no HRQoL changes between active treatment and placebo arms.The Phase III NETTER-1 study provides the best data available for advanced GEP-NET patients;it shows that peptide receptor radionuclide therapy can significantly improve GEP-NET patients’HRQoL.CONCLUSION HRQoL instruments offer a means to monitor patients’general disease condition,disease progression and their physical and mental well-being.Instruments including the commonly used European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-C30 and GINET21 lack,however,validation and a defined minimal clinical important difference specifically for GINET and P-NET patients.展开更多
