Biodiversity declines have motivated many studies on the relationship between species diversity and ecosystem functioning. In this study,we described the spatial-temporal characteristics of demersal fish communities along a coastal habitat in Rongcheng Bay,Shandong Peninsula,China with both species-based and biological trait-based approaches. The field survey was carried out monthly using traps from April to October of 2018,and divided into three seasons(spring:April and May;summer:June,July and August;autumn:September,October and November). The study area included five distinct habitats:seagrass bed, natural rocky reef, bare sand, artificial reef together with natural rocky reef, and artificial reef together with bare sand.We analyzed the fish communities with three taxonomic diversity indices, including Shannon-Wiener,Simpson,and Pielou Evenness,as well as four functional diversity indices, including FRic,FEve,FDiv,and FDis,based on 7 functional groups which are categorized into 27 traits. The results showed that there were no significant differences in taxonomic diversity indices among different habitats in the three seasons. However, significant differences were found in the functional richness of fish communities among different habitats in three seasons.Seagrass bed represented the highest functional richness in spring and autumn. This study demonstrates that seagrass bed is very important in enhancing the functional diversity of fish communities in a complex habitat. The study also indicates that the combination of taxonomic diversity and functional diversity will provide a more detailed description of the characteristics of fish communities. 展开更多

Exposure to plants has been reported to promote health and reduce stress, and plant color has direct impacts on physical and mental health. We used images of common types of tended plant communities in Shenyang,China, with combinations of yellow, green, and red foliage,as experimental stimuli.A total of 27 images were used as visual stimuli. We used electroencephalography to measureαwave activity(8-13 Hz)in 40 subjects while they viewed visual stimuli. These data were combined with subjective questionnaire data to analyze the relaxing effect of images of tended plant communities with different color types and proportions on people. The results revealed that, although there were slight differences between the electroencephalography and psychological findings, women were significantly more relaxed than men after viewing the images.Physiological and psychological responses varied with the types and proportions of colors in the tended plant communities:those of foliage with combinations of two or three colors induced stronger responses than images with a single color.Specifically,(1)for one-color plant communities, green or yellow plant communities induced a stronger relaxation effect than red plant communities;(2)for two-color plant communities, the optimal color proportion was 55%+45%,and the green+yellow and green+red color combinations induced a stronger relaxation effect;(3)for three-color plant communities, the relaxation effect was strongest when the color proportion was 55%green+25%yellow+20%red.These data would provide a plant color matching in future plant landscape design, which may be helpful for creating healthy and relaxing environments. 展开更多

In this study,we investigated how tree species affect N mineralization in connection to some soil properties and seconder metabolite levels of litter,in the soil of the old-est native forest communities. In the oldest pure communi-ties of Pinus nigra(PN),Fagus orientalis(FO),and Abies bornmuelleriana(AB)in the mountain range of Mount Uludağ,Bursa,Turkey, annual net yield and N mineraliza-tion in the 0-5-and 5-20-cm soil layers were determined in a field incubation study over 1 year.Sampling locations were chosen from 1300 to 1600 m a.s.l.,and moisture content(%),pH,water-holding capacity(%),organic C,total N,and C/N ratio, and annual net mineral N yield of the soil and hydro-lyzed tannic acid and total phenolic compounds in litter were compared for these forest communities.F.orientalis had the highest annual net Nmin yield(43.9±4.8 kg ha^(-1) a^(-1)),P.nigra the lowest(30.5±4.2 kg ha^(-1) a^(-1)).Our findings show that in the oldest forest ecosystems, the seasonal soil moisture content and tree species play an essential role in N cycling and that hydrolyzed tannic acids and total phenolic compounds effectively control N turnover.Tannic acid and total phenolics in the litter were found to inhibit nitrification, but total phenolics were found to stimulate ammonification. 展开更多

It is of great significance to study the effects of desert plants on soil enzyme activities and soil organic carbon(SOC)for maintaining the stability of the desert ecosystem. In this study,we studied the responses of soil enzyme activities and SOC fractions(particulate organic carbon(POC)and mineral-associated organic carbon(MAOC))to five typical desert plant communities(Convolvulus tragacanthoides,Ephedra rhytidosperma,Stipa breviflora,Stipa tianschanica var.gobica, and Salsola laricifolia communities)in the proluvial fan in the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountain in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region,China. We recorded the plant community information mainly including the plant coverage and herb and shrub species, and obtained the aboveground biomass and plant species diversity through sample surveys in late July 2023.Soil samples were also collected at depths of 0–10 cm(topsoil)and 10–20 cm(subsoil)to determine the soil physicochemical properties and enzyme activities. The results showed that the plant coverage and aboveground biomass of S.laricifolia community were significantly higher than those of C.tragacanthoides,S.breviflora,and S.tianschanica var.gobica communities(P<0.05).Soil enzyme activities varied among different plant communities. In the topsoil, the enzyme activities of alkaline phosphatase(ALP)andβ-1,4-glucosidas(βG)were significantly higher in E.rhytidosperma and S.tianschanica var.gobica communities than in other plant communities(P<0.05).The topsoil had higher POC and MAOC contents than the subsoil.Specifically, the content of POC in the topsoil was 18.17%–42.73%higher than that in the subsoil. The structural equation model(SEM)indicated that plant species diversity, soil pH,and soil water content(SWC)were the main factors influencing POC and MAOC.The soil pH inhibited the formation of POC and promoted the formation of MAOC.Conversely,SWC stimulated POC production and hindered MAOC formation. Our study aimed to gain insight into the effects of desert plant communities on soil enzyme activities and SOC fractions,as well as the drivers of SOC fractions in the proluvial fan in the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountain and other desert ecosystems. 展开更多

Taking Zhaoyu Historical City in Qixian County as an example, this paper explores the production process of tourism space in Zhaoyu Historical City in the context of consumption, based on Lefebvre's triadic dialectic theory. The study reveals that, driven by the development of tourism, subjects such as the government and planners possess absolute dominance over spatial representations, while residents demonstrate receptive and adaptive action strategies and social relations are reproduced, presenting a harmonious state.Further exploring the tourism community in the environmental performance of the subject of action, social relations, consumption demand, daily life practice, cultural capital, etc.,the daily life practice of the tourism community has transcended the original logic of tourism spatial production and has a certain extension. The mechanism analysis in this paper can help guide the healthy development of tourism space in the neighboring historical cities or communities and achieve the dual purpose of promoting the economic development of the community and heritage protection. 展开更多

The addition of silicon(Si)and organic fertilizers to soil conditioners can inhibit the transfer of heavy metal ions from soil to crops. However,it is not clear how Si and organic fertilizers affect soil properties and the micro-ecological environment and thereby reduce cadmium(Cd)accumulation in rice.In this study, the effects of L-type soil conditioners containing Si and organic fertilizers on bacterial and fungal community diversity, soil pH,organic matter, and available Si were analyzed with field experiments at two sites in Liuzhou City and Hezhou City, respectively,in Guangxi,China. With the increase of Si and organic fertilizer content in soil conditioner, rice yield respectively increased by 16.8–25.8 and 6.8–13.1%,and rice Cd content decreased significantly by 8.2–21.1 and 10.8–40.6%,respectively,at the two experimental sites.Soil microbiome analysis showed that the increase in abundance of Firmicutes and Actinobacteriota bacteria associated with Cd adsorption and sequestration, and Basidiomycota fungal populations associated with degradation of macromolecules favored the inhibition of soil Cd activity(soil exchangeable Cd decreased by 14.4–14.8 and 18.1–20.6%).This was associated with an increase in organic matter and Si content caused by applying soil conditioners. In conclusion,L-type soil conditioners, rich in Si and organic fertilizer, can reduce soil Cd bioavailability by regulating the dominant Cd passivating flora in the soil and ultimately reduce Cd accumulation in rice. 展开更多

Soil microorganisms play pivotal roles in element biogeochemical cycling and ecological functions in wetland ecosystem, which may affect global climate change.Variations in biotic and abiotic factors are known to affect soil microbial diversity, community structure and the corresponding functions. However, the relative importance of these biotic and abiotic factors on wetland soil microbial diversity and community structure on the QinghaiTibet Plateau remains poorly understood. In this study,we explored soil bacterial and fungal diversity and composition of five wetlands under two vegetation types(herbs vs Hippophae thibetana)in Changdu area,Tibet, through Illumina high throughput sequencing analysis of 16S rRNA for bacteria and internal transcribed spacer(ITS)for fungi. Results showed that soil bacterial alpha diversity was higher in H.thibetana dominated wetlands and was significantly and positively correlated with soil pH.No difference was detected in the soil fungal alpha diversity among samples and between vegetation types. The dominant soil bacterial phyla were Proteobacteria,Actinobacteria,Acidobacteria, and Firmicutes. While Ascomycota,Basidiomycota and Mucoromycota were the dominant fungal phyla.Soil bacterial and fungal community structures were significantly distinct by vegetation types. In addition, redundancy analysis indicated that soil pH was the key factor shaping soil bacterial community structure.Nevertheless, soil p H showed no effect on fungal community.Instead, soil dissolved organic carbon was the major factor contributing to soil fungal community structure. This study emphasized that wetland soil microbial communities were distinct by vegetation types and the driving factors of microbial beta diversity between bacterial and fungal community were also different in wetlands in Changdu area. 展开更多

Mining activity affects the vegetation and soils of the ecosystems. However, the effects of mining activity on saxicolous lichen communities are less concerned. Thus, the aim of this study was to characterize saxicolous lichen communities in three basins(Vis-Vis River basin,Poteros River basin, and Capillitas River basin)surrounding metalliferous mining projects of different types of operation and at different stages of exploitation.A large-scale mine(Bajo de la Alumbrera)with more than 25 a of open-pit mining located in the Vis-Vis River basin(CRV).A pre-exploitation mine(Agua Rica)located in the Poteros River basin(CRP),and a small-scale mine(Minas Capillitas)with more than 160 a of underground mining located in the Capillitas River basin(CAC).In each basin, species richness, cover, and frequency of lichen communities were measured on 40 rock outcrops. Also, explanatory variables were recorded,i.e.,altitude,slope,aspect,vegetation cover, rock, and soil cover around the rocky area sampled.Richness and total cover of lichen communities were analysed using linear models, and species composition was explored using multivariate ordination analysis. Results showed that a total of 118 lichen species were identified. The species richness differed among basins and the lichen composition present in areas close to mining sites responded mainly to basins, altitude, and microsite variables. The lichen cover showed no difference among basins, but it changed under different rock and vegetation cover. It was not possible to quantify the effects of mining activity on species richness and composition. However, the low richness values found in the downstream of Minera Alumbrera could be associated with the negative impact of open-pit mining. Moreover, the effects of large-scale mining activity on lichen communities needs more investigation. 展开更多

In the context of global degradation and loss of natural wetlands, waterbirds have been increasingly using artificial wetlands as alternative habitats. However, waterbirds are facing various threats in these artificial wetlands, due to dramatic environmental changes induced by anthropogenic activities.Exploring the effects of these changes on the temporal dynamics of the waterbird communities can help understand how waterbirds adapt to environmental changes and thus formulate effective management and conservation plans. In this study,we carried out field surveys on waterbirds and environmental factors across 20 subsidence wetlands created by underground coal mining in the Huainan coal mining area in the breeding seasons of 2016 and 2021.We predicted that the waterbird assemblages(i.e.,number of individuals, species richness,Shannon-Wiener diversity,Pielou evenness and species composition) differed between the two years, and that these differences were correlated with the temporal changes in environmental factors.Across the surveyed wetlands,we recorded 26 waterbird species in 2016 and 23 in 2021.For individual wetlands, the number of waterbird individuals and species richness increased by 71.6% and 20.1%,respectively,over the five years, with no changes in Shannon-Wiener diversity and Pielou evenness. The overall increase in the number of bird individuals was mainly caused by an increase in vegetation gleaners and gulls that adapt well to anthropogenic activities. The species composition was significantly different between the two years, which was mainly caused by changes in the number of individuals of dominant species under influence of changes in human activities. For most wetlands, the temporal pairwiseβ-diversities could be explained by species turnover rather than nestedness, probably due to high mobility of waterbird species and dramatic changes in local environments. Our study suggests that waterbird communities could respond to environmental changes in subsidence wetlands, providing important implications for waterbird conservation in human-dominated artificial wetlands. 展开更多

The characteristics of the bacterial community structure in aerosols of different particle sizes over northern Chinese marginal seas and the northwestern Pacific Ocean in autumn were analyzed using high-throughput sequencing and the quantitative real-time PCR method based on 16S rRNA genes.Combined with environmental factors and air mass sources, the bacterial abundance, community diversity, composition and structural characteristics in aerosols were studied, which might provide a scientific evaluation for a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics,long-distance transmission and ecological effects of aerosols from coastal waters to the distant ocean(northwestern Pacific Ocean). At the junction of the South Yellow Sea and the East China Sea,the bacterial abundance in the aerosols was substantially affected by transmission of continental air masses and was higher than those in other samples, and the bacterial abundance in coarse particle(>2.1μm)samples was significantly higher than that in fine particle(<2.1μm)samples(P<0.05).In contrast, aerosols collected at the northwestern Pacific Ocean(NWP5 site)were less affected by transmissions of continental air masses, and their bacterial abundance in coarse particle samples was significantly lower than that in fine particle samples.Significant differences in the richness and diversity of bacterial communities were observed among all samples(P<0.05).The differences in the bacterial community in different sea areas were greater than those in the same sample with different particle sizes(P>0.05).Among the environmental factors examined,a significant negative correlation was observed between bacterial community richness and temperature(P<0.05),and the bacterial community diversity was significantly positively correlated with the concentration of K^(+)(P<0.05).Canonical correspondence analysis showed that temperature,NH_(4)^(+) concentration and SO_(4)^(2−) concentration exerted significant effects on bacterial community structures(P<0.01)in aerosols of different particle sizes over northern Chinese marginal seas and the northwestern Pacific Ocean. 展开更多

In online social networks(OSN),they generate several specific user activities daily, corresponding to the billions of data points shared. However, although users exhibit significant interest in social media, they are uninterested in the content, discussions,or opinions available on certain sites. Therefore, this study aims to identify influential communities and understand user behavior across networks in the information diffusion process.Social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, extract data to analyze the information diffusion process, based on which they cascade information among the individuals in the network. Therefore, this study proposes an influential information diffusion model that identifies influential communities across these two social media sites.More-over,it addresses site migration by visualizing a set of overlapping communities using hyper-edge detection. Thus, the overlapping community structure is used to identify similar communities with identical user interests.Furthermore, the com-munity structure helps in determining the node activation and user influence from the information cascade model. Finally, the Fraction of Intra/Inter-Layer(FIL)dif-fusion score is used to evaluate the efficiency of the influential information diffu-sion model by analyzing the trending influential communities in a multilayer network. However, from the experimental result,it observes that the FIL diffusion score for the proposed method achieves better results in terms of accuracy,preci-sion,recall and efficiency of community detection than the existing methods. 展开更多

Warming and nitrogen(N)deposition are two important drivers of global climate changes.Coarse woody debris(CWD)contains a large proportion of the carbon(C)in the total global C pool. The composition of soil microbial communities and environmental changes(i.e.,N deposition and warming)are the key drivers of CWD decomposition, but the interactive impact between N deposition and warming on the composition of soil microbial communities and CWD decomposition is still unclear. In a laboratory experiment,we study and simulate respiration during decomposition of the CWD(C 98)of Cryptomeria japonica(CR)and Platycarya strobilacea(PL)in response to warming and N deposition over 98 days.Resuts show that either warming or N addition signifi cantly accelerated the C 98 of the two tree species by altering the soil microbial community(bacterial:fungi and G+:G–).The combined treatment(warming+N)resulted in a decomposition eff ect equal to the sum of the individual eff ects.In addition, the species composition of bacteria and fungi was obviously aff ected by warming. However,N deposition had a remarkable infl uence on G+:G–.Our results indicated that N deposition and warming will observably alter the composition and growth of the microbial community and thus work synergistically to accelerate CWD decomposition in forest ecosystems. We also present evidence that N deposition and warming infl uenced the composition and balance of soil microbial communities and biogeochemical cycling of forest ecosystems. 展开更多

Soil fungi in forest ecosystems have great potential to enhance host plant growth and systemic ecological functions and services.Reforestation at Saihanba Mechanized Forest Farm, the world's largest artificial plantation, has been integral to global forest ecosystem preservation since the 1950s.To better assess the ecological effects of soil microbiology after afforestation, fungal diversity and community structure(using Illumina sequencing)from forests dominated by Larix gmelinii var.principis-rupprechtii,Pinus sylvestris var.mongolica and Picea asperata, and from grassland were surveyed. In total,4,540 operational taxonomic units(OTUs)were identified, with Mortierella and Solicoccozyma being the dominant genera of grassland soil and Inocybe,Cortinarius,Piloderma,Tomentella,Sebacina,Hygrophorus and Saitozyma dominating the plantation soil.Principle coordinate analysis(PCoA)and co-occurrence networks revealed differences in fungal structure after afforestation.Significantly, more symbiotroph guilds were dominated by ectomycorrhizal fungi in plantations under the prediction of FUNGuild. The community composition and diversity of soil fungi were significantly influenced by pH via redundancy analysis(RDA)and the Mantel test(p<0.01).This finding emphasizes that soil pH has a strong effect on the transition of fungal communities and functional taxa from grassland to plantation, providing a novel indicator for forest restoration. 展开更多

Marine spatial planning(MSP)is designed to divide the sea area into different types of functional zones,to implement corresponding development activities. However, the long-term impacts of anthropogenic activities associated with MSP practice on the marine microbial biosphere are still unclear.Yalu River Estuary,a coastal region in northeast of China, has been divided into fishery&agricultural(F&A)zone, shipping&port(S&P)zone and marine protected area(MPA)zone by a local MSP guideline that has been run for decades. To examine the effects of long-term executed MSP,benthic bacterial communities from different MSP zones were obtained and compared in this study. The results revealed significant differences in the bacterial community structure and predict functions among different zones.Bacterial genera enriched in different zones were identified, including SBR1031 in MPA,Woeseia and Sva0996 in S&P,and Halioglobus in F&A.In addition, correlations between some bacterial genera and sediment pollutants were uncovered.Furthermore, bacteria related to sulphide production were more abundant in the F&A zone, which was according to the accumulation of sulphides in this area. Moreover, bacteria associated with chemoheterotrophy and fermentation were more predominant in the S&P zone, consistent with high levels of organic matter and petroleum caused by shipping. Our findings indicated benthic bacterial communities could bring to light the anthropogenic activity footprints by different activities induced by long-term MSP practice. 展开更多

Sexual dimorphism of plants shapes the diff erent morphology and physiology between males and females. However,it is still unclear whether it infl uences belowground ecological processes. In this study, rhizosphere soil of male and female Populus deltoides and bulk soil were collected from an 18-year plantation(male and female trees mix-planted)and grouped into three soil compartments.Soil carbon(C),nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)levels were determined, and soil bacterial communities were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing. The results showed the less total carbon and total organic carbon, the more nutrients(available phosphorus, nitrate nitrogen and ammonium nitrogen)available in the rhizosphere soils of female poplars than soils of males.However,α-diversity indices of the rhizosphere bacterial communities under male plants were signifi-cantly higher.Principal component analysis showed that the bacterial communities were signifi cantly diff erent between the male and female soil compartments.Further, the bacterial co-occurrence network in soil under male trees had more nodes and edges than under females.BugBase analysis showed the more functional bacteria taxa related to biofi lm formation and antioxidation under males. The results indicate that soils under male poplars had more diverse and more complex co-occurrence networks of the rhizosphere bacterial community than soils under female trees, implying that male poplars might have better environmental adaptability. The study provides insight into the diff erent soil-microbe interactions of dioecious plants.More details about the infl uencing mechanism of sexual dimorphism on rhizosphere soil bacterial communities need to be further studied. 展开更多
