Contrast and Fusion: The Role of Regional Culture in Shaping Jiangsu Paper-Cut Art

The Chinese paper-cut art,first recorded in the Wei,Jin,and Southern and Northern Dynasties(220 AD-589 AD),has witnessed the changes of times,yet it still retains its artistic vitality.Chinese papercuts can be divided into two schools:the northern and the southern.Jiangsu,located in the region of the Yellow River and Huai River,is the geographical dividing line between those two schools.Therefore,in Jiangsu Province,not only the rough northern art form(such as in Xuzhou papercut)but also the graceful southern art form(such as in Jintan papercut)is evident.In addition,the unique combined paper-cut style(such as in Yangzhou and Nanjing papercuts)can be appreciated here.Although several scholars have analyzed the artistic characteristics of Jiangsu papercut based on cultural background,very few have discussed the differences between the northern and the southern in terms of content,connotation,and style.Through literature review and collected works made by local craftsmen and inheritors of this tradition,this article aims to show readers the contrast and integration of papercuts in these four places under the influence of different cultural and economic backgrounds in order to better understand the role of regional factors in shaping the art form of papercuts in Jiangsu Province.Nowadays,with the change in people’s lifestyles,the living space of traditional papercuts has shrunk drastically,and its practicability in the past has faded.Instead,people are searching for and creating cultural and artistic value in museums,tourist attractions,and commodity transactions.Among them,some works have deviated from the cultural background of traditional paper-cut art.Therefore,this paper provides a basis for the current development of this art form in Jiangsu.

A Contrastive Study on Mark Phenomena of English and Chinese Languages

Linguistic marker is a common phenomenon, and there are different levels of markers in various languages. Mark theory was first proposed by the Prague School in 1930s, which is an important principle of language analysis system. The function and meaning of markup languages are mainly pragmatic, which have procedural meaning and no conceptual meaning. Markedness phenomenon is not only the inherent characteristics of language symbols, but also the product of social life and different cultures. Due to the great difference between cultural background and social environment of Chinese and English speaker, thus there are many similarities and differences in the language, society and culture mark. The mark phenomena of English nouns are mainly related to the category of nouns and the opposite nouns. However, Chinese nouns have no strict morphological changes. In this paper, we discuss the theory of mark phenomenon and analyze a contrastive study on mark phenomena of English and Chinese Languages.

When the umbrellas were held up against the tear gas attack in the protest on September 28, 2014, the hot issue raised by the marathon-like Yellow Umbrella Movement was not only the matter of politics but also a coincidence created for the Hong Kong locals to face, or to be faced with an already moot cliche： How the Hongkongese can redef＇me and redeem their almost lost socio-cultural identity, particularly under the increasingly hegemonic influences and the socio-cultural invasion of the mainland after the 1997 Handover. My present paper is not intended to discuss the topic of identity on the platform of politics, or the postcolonial studies such as transculturation or cultural hybridty. But instead, I am far more interested in locating such issue on the aesthetic dimension of collective memory, which is revealed in two local contemporary Hong Kong compositions. In the process of shaping and reshaping a form of＂HongKongeseness＂ in which the composers tend to create and the local listeners tend to experience, albeit transient, can appear in every nuance of the sonic metaphor embedded in the pre-existing indigenous tunes of a self-contained compositional work.
