The field of education is increasingly catching people’s eyes as more and more people become aware of its influence and significance on the young generation.Nevertheless,when it comes to the teaching and learning pro...The field of education is increasingly catching people’s eyes as more and more people become aware of its influence and significance on the young generation.Nevertheless,when it comes to the teaching and learning process,the role of nonverbal behavior is often neglected.Indeed,nonverbal behavior constitutes more than 90%of our daily communication,and it is also one vi⁃tal aspect in a classroom setting,which has the power of maintaining classroom order and the teacher-student relationships.Eye contact,one crucial part of nonverbal behavior,is a topic worth researching.The research focuses on the controversial topic that is based on a contrastive analysis of how eye contact functions differently in the western and non-western cultures.Theories of both western and non-western scholars are presented to rationalize why the use of direct and constant eye contact in a classroom context differs in the two cultures.More theories and practices are also cited to explain an apparent inconsistency,which is“teachers in both western and non-western cultures are encouraged to use direct and constant eye contacts in classes,while people in Asian countries tend to avoid direct eye contact”.展开更多

This paper presents the case of one Sister School in the Canada-China Reciprocal Learning Project based on a belief that practice has significant value for the development of teachers’intercultural awareness and scho...This paper presents the case of one Sister School in the Canada-China Reciprocal Learning Project based on a belief that practice has significant value for the development of teachers’intercultural awareness and schools’intercultural communication experience.This paper focuses on one Shanghai school’s reciprocal learning experience,highlighting the content of intercultural communication,the areas of collaboration,the characteristics of collaboration,and the attitudes towards collaboration in the intercultural context.Against the backdrop of New Basic Education reform in China,I try to depict how a Sister School partnership guided by the principle of reciprocal learning motivates Chinese and Canadian teachers to work together across cultural differences in order to learn and develop in terms of theory and practice.I also discuss difficulties and challenges that have occurred in the process of intercultural communication.In the process,reciprocal learning is re-conceptualized and relived as part of our research endeavor.展开更多
This article reviews preservice teacher arts education university course work with the goal of informing cross-cultural competencies for Indonesian teacher education.The authors are mid-career education faculty,who vi...This article reviews preservice teacher arts education university course work with the goal of informing cross-cultural competencies for Indonesian teacher education.The authors are mid-career education faculty,who visited six universities in three countries to observe cross-cultural contents in teacher preparation courses.Cross-cultural competence relies on theories of globalization,intercultural and multicultural education.Using a case study method,the authors gathered data through relevant literature,course descriptions,met with stakeholders,wrote and coded reflective and reflexive field notes,and identified trends.These trends included the infusion of Eastern content into Western course work,and the role of Western arts forms in Eastern settings.These findings support the development of“cross-cultural communication through the arts”or“komunikasi silang budaya melalui seni”as a way of approaching cross-cultural teaching in Indonesia.展开更多

Definitions of concepts used are provided followed by a historical overview on...This chapter starts with an introduction illuminating the theoretical back-ground necessary for taking culture into account in HCI design. Definitions of concepts used are provided followed by a historical overview on taking culture into account in HCI design. Subsequently, a glimpse of the current state of research in culture-centered HCI design is derived from secondary literature providing the gist of the structures, processes, methods, models and theoretic approaches concerning the relationship between culture and HCI design (“converging” strategies). After presenting controversies and challenges, a short discussion of results from empirical studies and design recommendations for culture-centered HCI design lead to implications and trends in future intercultural user interface design research to close the knowledge gap (the “divergence”) regarding the relationship between culture and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), i.e. converging the divergence to reach the convergent divergence.展开更多

Cultural influence on HCI is described using cultural variables for user interface design. Assumptions and empirical results regarding the influence of culture on HCI, considering the path of the information processing and the interaction style between Chinese and German users are explained based on cultural models. Subsequent indicators represent the relationship between culture and HCI (culturally imprinted by the user). Correlations adopted theoretically between cultural dimensions and variables for HCI design were investigated. These correlations represent relevant constituents of a model for culturally influenced HCI. Considerations applying this model and evidence for the proper application of the IUID method-mix are presented elucidating why and how cultural aspects play a role in HCI design and usability/UX engineering. The IUID method-mix serves to inspire HCI engineers in the requirement analysis phase as well as HCI designers in the design phase. The readers are thereby sensitized to the challenges of intercultural usability/UX engineering and intercultural HCI design and will be equipped with methodological knowledge relevant to the derivation of design recommendations for user interface design for and in their desired cultural contexts. “Happy Chinese”or kuaile hanyu is an educational melodrama produced by the Chinese TV channel CCTV in 2009.Aiming to improve foreign learners’Chinese language skills,the plot revolves around Susan,an American,stayi...“Happy Chinese”or kuaile hanyu is an educational melodrama produced by the Chinese TV channel CCTV in 2009.Aiming to improve foreign learners’Chinese language skills,the plot revolves around Susan,an American,staying with her former Chinese classmate’s family.“Happy Chinese”proposes both language and cultural learning.In this paper,the authors are examining the first seven episodes marking Susan’s arrival in China for the Spring Festival.Basing the study on a postmodern and critical approach to the“intercultural,”as well as on a critical view towards Orientalism and Occidentalism,the authors are interested in how the programme constructs the arrival of the American and the way she is perceived and represented by the“locals.”The authors are also looking into what the Chinese family teaches Susan about being Chinese and,at the same time,the tensions that a certain tendency to“keep up appearances”and appear“real Chinese”before her trigger in the family,across generation and gender.The research tools used to analyze the data are derived from discursive pragmatics.展开更多
Reproducibility is a cornerstone of scientific research.Data science is not an exception.In recent years scientists were concerned about a large number of irreproducible studies.Such reproducibility crisis in science ...Reproducibility is a cornerstone of scientific research.Data science is not an exception.In recent years scientists were concerned about a large number of irreproducible studies.Such reproducibility crisis in science could severely undermine public trust in science and science-based public policy.Recent efforts to promote reproducible research mainly focused on matured scientists and much less on student training.In this study,we conducted action research on students in data science to evaluate to what extent students are ready for communicating reproducible data analysis.The results show that although two-thirds of the students claimed they were able to reproduce results in peer reports,only one-third of reports provided all necessary information for replication.The actual replication results also include conflicting claims;some lacked comparisons of original and replication results,indicating that some students did not share a consistent understanding of what reproducibility means and how to report replication results.The findings suggest that more training is needed to help data science students communicating reproducible data analysis.展开更多
